A WARM RIVER VALLEY WELCOME W

elcome to Belle Plaine, and thank you for diving into the 2016-2017 Belle Plaine Lifestyle Guide with us. What makes Belle Plaine such a warm, welcoming community? Just ask the people who live, work and play here. On your journey through our lifestyle guide, you’ll see what so many people enjoy about the city, the community, the businesses and all the other amenities that make Belle Plaine not just where they live, but what makes it their home. Belle Plaine is a charming community nestled in the beautiful Minnesota River Valley. Located midway between Mankato and the Twin Cities, Highway 169 provides easy access to this scenic area. Belle Plaine is conveniently located in southwest Scott County as a hub for many major thoroughfares. With a population near 7,000, Belle Plaine has maintained its cozy, small-town feel, yet residents are fortunate to benefit from amenities provided by Scott County, which is one of seven metro area counties. Residents also benefit from being just a short 40-minute drive into the heart of the Twin Cities, so there’s always something to do on the weekends whether it be staying in town for a day of antique shopping or heading to Minneapolis to enjoy a museum or traveling Broadway show.

Belle Plaine is especially beautiful in autumn. Located on the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway, Belle Plaine is the ideal spot to watch the seasons change. The area boasts of apple orchards and a host of fall activities that are popular local destinations. Whether you’re looking to settle down with your family or just want a quiet and scenic weekend away, Belle Plaine is one of Minnesota’s hidden gems. This publication offers a directory of information and resources used by Belle Plaine area businesses and residents, especially those who are new to this area. The Lifestyle Guide is a compilation of important information — a single source for lists of services, names, telephone numbers and email addresses. We hope you keep it handy and use it often in your search for fun and fulfillment in the Minnesota River Valley. Our apologies in advance for omissions or for changes that occur after publication. Please notify us of information that needs to be updated so it can be kept current throughout the year. If you would like additional copies of this publication, call our Circulation Department at 952-345-6682. Send updated information for the Lifestyle Guide to Amanda McKnight at amcknight@swpub.com.

MEMORIAL PARK HONORS VETERANS

T

he Belle Plaine Veterans Memorial Park is designed to honor men and women who served our country in war and peace time. The park serves as a venue for reflection and celebration for veterans events. The park was almost entirely funded by donations and volunteer labor. The Belle Plaine Veterans Club solicited donations from local citizens and businesses who together volunteered more than 2,000 hours of labor. Local merchants donated equipment, labor and supplies towards the park’s construction. Each year the annual Memorial Day program held at Veterans Park celebrates community with elaborate holiday decorations by the Belle Plaine Historical Society. They work to light up the the park each year. The American Legion Post 144 and VFW Post 6202 established the park in 2001. The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts help out with projects at Veterans Park. With the assistance of local resident Dave Spalding, the helicopter was placed on display as the focal point of the city park. The helicopter was used in service from 1968 to 1987 in Vietnam with the 11th Calvary Regiment known as Blackhorse and the 118th Assault Helicopter Company known as Thunderbirds. The park has a stunning flag display on top of a small hill with the flags that flank a walking path. Flags fly high from the United States, Minnesota, Belle Plaine, U.S. Army, Air Force, Marine, Navy and Coast Guard and Prisoner of War. The city’s bike path winds through the park and “Flag Boulevard.” Sixteen-foot tall flagpoles are placed 10 feet apart and each pole is engraved with

the names of one or more veterans, both living and deceased. Belle Plaine residents and families can seek out fun attractions like horseback riding, antiquing, paintball or seek adventure by zip lining. The city of Belle Plaine gives golfers a place to relax and improve their golf game on an 18-hole course or three other golf courses located within a 10-minute drive. Court Square Park offers a park shelter with a kitchen and is available for rent. The park also offers four barbecue grills, horseshoe pits, restrooms, benches and playground equipment suitable for all ages of youth. Adjacent to the park is Hooper Bowler Hillstrom Historical House. The historical house is available for tours by members of Belle Plaine Historical Society. The house was built by in 1871 by S.A. FLAVORS OF BELLE PLAINE B

elle Plaine and surrounding communities offer diverse dining options for foodies seeking sweet and savory cuisine. Mom and pop diners serve up homemade, homestyle menus at local restaurants in town. Foodies can check out local and area grocers to cook up fine meals at home. An area brewery, Chinese buffet, a doughnut shop, a tavern and a quaint breakfast and lunch café with charm all bring diverse dining options to the town. Two area apple orchards sell hundreds of varieties of apples, cider, jams and jellies and apple products like pies and caramel apples on a stick. Minnesota’s largest candy store is located just minutes out of town. The sweet shop boasts hard-to-find, old-fashioned candies from your childhood. New candies like dozens of licorice flavors and salt water taffy varieties fill the large yellow barn. Homemade pies, dozens of varieties of root beer and shelves of specialty Minnesota savory and sweet food products are sold from across the state. The Belle Plaine Farmers Market sells the best locally grown produce and handmade goods from May through October. Area farmers markets sell the best in veggies, flowers, baked goods and homemade desserts.

Take a drive to New Prague to discover farm fresh creamery delights. Head down the highway toward Jordan to dine in style at a new supper club. The supper club serves up big city tastes with famous, sizzling steaks and fresh seafood entrees. You can choose to relax and dine in a formal, sit-down supper club style. The menu is complete and meals are served with a relish tray and bread. Guests can also dine more casually from classic American fare menu at the grill restaurant located on the other side of the supper club. BBQ Days, Belle Plaine’s famous annual summer celebration, can satisfy a meat craving. You can pair a beef sandwich and socialize with locals over a cool beverage from the beer garden. Pack up a picnic and your favorite classic foods prepared to go from local restaurants or fill the basket with your own summer fare. Relax by eating with family and friends on a park picnic table or on a blanket in a city green space. The Scott County Fair in Jordan offers the best summer flavors of sweet and savory foods on the last five days of July. At the fair, homemade meals are served up at the 4-H and church booths, but if you crave fried foods on a stick or cold sweet treats, the fair can be the perfect place to satisfy a sweet tooth or a carnival food craving.

FARMERS MARKET Bar-B-Q Days is the annual summer festival held the third weekend in July since 1959 to celebrate the community.

Belle Plaine Farmers Market 410 N. Cedar St. The farmers market is open from 3:30-6:30 p.m. every Wednesday in May through October. It is not operated by the city. Contact Lisa Fahey at 952-873-5665 for more information.

“What we are excited about is the new city bridge,” said Cynthia Strack, community development director with the city of Belle Plaine. (Photo by Kara Hildreth) Right — Longtime resident Patricia Krings, who works at Belle Plaine city hall.

NEW CITY BRIDGE OPENS T

he city of Belle Plaine is excited about a new city bridge that opened this past summer. The new bridge will offer residents coming into town and leaving an easier commute and more connectivity to roadways. The Enterprise Drive overpass in Belle Plaine was celebrated by city officials and county leaders with a ribbon cutting ceremony in July. “It is huge for our community and will add to the connectivity in the community, and it will be another interchange with 169, and we are investing in a project in the northeast quadrant of the intersection,” said Cynthia Strack, community development director who works in marketing to promote the city and community of Belle Plaine. “We are very proud of the bridge,” said Patricia Krings, city hall administrative assistant and longtime resident of Belle Plaine. The Enterprise Drive will make commuting in and out of town easier. Another big project for Belle Plaine this past year was a groundbreaking for a new medical clinic. Ridgeview medical clinic will be a new 13,000-square-foot clinic that can be built to accommodate up to three stories of office and medical space in the next five years. “The new clinic will be modeled after the Two-Twelve Medical Center, and it will connect to a 10,000-square-foot health and wellness space and to a 55-unit, independent living building,” Strack said. This multi-million dollar project will add at least 20 new jobs to the community. The project may further strengthen the economic development of Belle Plaine that has a population of around 7,000

residents, according to Metropolitan Council statistics. Belle Plaine’s city hall contains a license bureau and the post office is located across the street. A five-member city council makes decisions and develops plans for how the city will operate and grow with commercial and residential development. The council members serve four-year terms and the mayor serves a two-year tenure.

BOILING OVER WITH POTENTIAL Scott County has always been a tourist haven BY STEPHANIE HERRICK, SCHS

S

cott County is home to some of the most visited places in all of Minnesota: Valleyfair, Canterbury Park, Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, the Renaissance Festival, and more. However, long before these places were established, Scott County was already a tourist destination, thanks to the area’s natural beauty. The county’s earliest tourist attractions were health spas and resorts, which drew visitors from all over. In Jordan, guests came for the mud; specifically, to partake in a restorative mineral mud bath at Mudbaden Sulphur Springs. M u d b a d e n b e g a n i n 19 0 6 when founder Ole Rosendahl accidentally discovered sulphur mud on his property. Soon he was “cooking” the mud in order to treat patients. His experiments proved successful and he opened a spa, “Rosendahl Sulphur Springs” (later known as “Mudbaden Sulphur Springs”). The spa grew; in 1912, up to 14 trains stopped daily at Mudbaden Station depot. By 1914, the spa could accommodate 200 patients.

Exhibit visitors can take their photo sitting in an original car from Valleyfair’s High Roller. (Photo by Amanda McKnight) However, advances in modern medicine led to a patient decline in the 1940s and sulphur mud baths came to an end in 1952. Visitors also came to Scott County for the water — specifically, Prior Lake. For close to 10 0 years, between 1879 and the 1960s, resorts thrived on Prior Lake as commercial and recreation centers. They offered amenities such as boats, housekeeping services, ice, local farm produce for purchase, and sandy beaches. Some of the larger resorts offered extra benefits like

tennis, golf, dances, and horseback riding. The resort season began in mid-May and ran until early fall. The resorts remained popular tourist destinations until after World War II, when visitors began heading for northern Minnesota instead. Another natural wonder – Boiling Springs – also drew visitors to Scott County for a number of years. Boiling Springs is a geological rarity and historic site within Eagle Creek, located in northwest Savage. The water in the spring appears to be boiling,

though it is not actually hot. Boiling Springs is an important cultural and spiritual site for the Dakota, and was the home of Eagle Head’s village in the 1830s. When the land around Boiling Springs opened for EuroAmerican settlement, it was purchased in 1855 by Gregor Hattenberger, who operated a farm and grist mill there. Later, his descendants publicized the site as a tourist attraction, installing a park , b enches , and picnic tables around it. For many years, visitors came to see this natural wonder in action. Though it is no longer a tourist destination, Boiling Springs is still active and continues to garner local interest. To learn more about these and other Scott County tourist attractions, past and present, visit the Scott County Historical Society’s newest exhibit, “Wish You Were Here: Tourism in Scott County.” The exhibit opened on Sept. 22, 2016, and runs through August 2018. This exhibit features incredible photos and artifacts, along with hands-on activities and Instagram hot spots. The Scott County Historical Society is located at 235 Fuller Street South in Shakopee. WAYS TO RECREATE B

elle Plaine is proud of its outdoor municipal pool that serves as a popular summer venue. The community also offers year round places to enjoy winter activities like skating and hockey. The area offers miles of playing fields, tennis courts and acres of city parks. Some local parks include Deer, Veterans Memorial Park, Heritage, Union, Prairie, Meadow, Hickory, Century, Chatfield Square, Creekside, Townsend and community area dog parks. There are many miles of picturesque biking trails to cycle in the spring, summer and fall. Belle Plaine’s Founders Park is a historic treasure and the land sits on the National Register of Historic Places. Another notable place to visit in town is the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, burial place of the town’s founding father. In the summer months, Scott County Fair is only minutes from Belle Plaine. Guests and residents can attend outdoor concerts or watch free live entertainment with a famous horse show, a Miracle of Birth Center, a carnival and classic sweet and savory fair foods. More big city events can be attended since Belle Plaine is only a short commute or 40 minutes from the Twin Cities, the hub of the arts community. Live Broadway productions are only a short drive away. Minneapolis is home to many hotels and is the famous destination to seek the best shopping at Mall of America. Check out neighboring towns that offer the best in antique shopping or grab a bite to eat at a local eatery. Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge connects towns via trails. This green space pays tribute to pioneers who settled the land and became caretakers to the woods and natural Minnesota outdoor spaces.

Belle Plaine hosts an annual fall half marathon and 5K Run. The city is home to 20 city-owned parks with 108 miles of sidewalk and trails.

In the winter, you can curl up with a good book. The Belle Plaine Branch Library is part of the Scott County Library system. It gives residents full access online to the library collection from the neighboring communities of Jordan, Shakopee, Prior Lake, Elko New Market, New Prague and Savage. HOME TO FARM FAMILY OF THE YEAR B

elle Plaine is poised for progressive growth in years to come, but leaders like to boast how residents like to maintain the small-town, close-knit community feel as the city grows. This is why many residents and families make a home in this community. This year the family of Ted and Mary Kornder of Belle Plaine in St. Lawrence Township was named the 2016 Scott County Farm Family of the Year during the Scott County Fair appreciation breakfast. Close to the Twin Cities, Belle Plaine commuters benefit from the close access to Highway 169. Commuters have easy, convenient access to highways 19, 60 and 169. Belle Plaine is close to metro transit options. This year, a brand new city overpass bridge opened near the intersection of Hwy. 169 and County Road 3 off Meridian Street in Belle Plaine. This is a proud accomplishment for the city because it is a new city bridge. Like many Minnesota communities, the school district is a top reason people make home and raise a family in the growing community. The school district prides itself by employing a caring staff and the district boasts modern school building facilities, small classes and a safe environment. A few private schools include Holy Family Academy, Our Lady of the Prairie School and Trinity

The population for Belle Plaine is 6,700 with a median household income of $70,375. Lutheran School. Learning opportunities continue through Belle Plaine Community Education. Many community ed classes teach sports, recreation, cooking, crafts, business and computer skills via youth and adult enrichment classes for all ages. Belle Plaine is proud to offer a unique partnership between the city and school district with community education. This partnership provides residents community education opportunities that give life to living. Faith communities find community and worship together in the Lutheran, Baptist, Presbyterian, Catholic and nondenominational churches in town. Many other worship centers in the area practice other religions of faith. Plenty of community activities center around high school theater, concerts, fundraisers, festivals, reunions and homecoming events.

A RURAL ECONOMY F

arming and agriculture are the town’s economic heartbeat and the center for Belle Plaine’s marketplace. Generations of family-owned farmland add beauty to the landscape. Acres of corn, beans and hay crops add to the economic foundation of Belle Plaine. Besides the school district and city hall, the largest employers in town are a John Deere dealership and Genesis Corporation. Many Belle Plaine residents would not trade city life for the relaxed lifestyle of a rural community. The historic downtown area in Belle Plaine is alive. Residents in search of gifts, jewelry, bakery cakes and cookies, clothing or hardware can shop locally. Several diners and pubs offer residents hometown, homemade food and local entertainment choices. Downtown Belle Plaine is the perfect destination to complete holiday shopping or find year-round gift giving options. Locally-owned shops sell special goods and services with the top treatment in personal, customer service. Belle Plaine is home to a large upscale grocery store and a pharmacy opened in recent years. Residents can find staple goods, toiletries and medicines they need in their own community without needing to travel outside of town or shop at a big box chain store. The Belle Plaine city economic development group works to attract more new businesses to locate in town now and in years to come. The Belle Plaine Chamber of Commerce is located downtown and is active to support local businesses and community events.

The Belle Plaine Farmers Market offers local produce and other homemade and handmade goods each Wednesday afternoon from May into October at Court Square Park.

he Belle Plaine Animal Hospital is nearby to support health and wellness for all beloved pets. The West River Veterinary Clinic in town helps pet lovers with needed medical and health p r e v e n t i o n s e r v i c e s f o r a ll domestic pets. Together, the local vet businesses give Belle Plaine a reputation as a furfriendly community. Residents can be proud to be home to a dog park in town. Dogs have had a place to run and play since 2013 when the Belle Plaine Community Dog Park opened. The park is located on South Market Street and is a joint partnership and agreement between the city of Belle Plaine and the school district. In the winter the dog park functions as a hockey rink, and in the spring, summer and early fall, the park is home to furry, four-legged friends who can frolic and socialize with other canine friends and dog lovers. The Belle Plaine Police Department offers dog licenses and can answer any questions about local city code regarding pets. Youth can learn to raise farm animals by becoming a part of an area or Belle Plaine 4-H Club where youth can exhibit animals at the nearby Scott County Fair each summer. The Carver-Scott Humane Society serves the area. The group is always looking for caring homes. Residents can seek out the society to foster rescued dogs and cats. The animal society is always needing volunteers who love animals, but who are not able to keep pets permanently.

Belle Plaine is home to more than one licensed veterinarian with choices for the best treatment, boarding, surgery and hospitalization for pets.
