This year marks the second year of the annual contest, and it has tipped scales and pushed our calculators to the limit. Participants weighed in on 71 categories, casting more than 30,000 votes — nearly quadrupling 2017 numbers.

Top 10 voting categories

How does it work? There were a few rules of the contest:  Participants could vote by visiting one of Southwest News Media’s websites and registering their favorites through a nomination in one or more categories.  To make it to the finalist round, each nominee had to receive at least three unique nominations.  Nomination boundaries included all of Scott and Carver counties, which are largely served by Southwest News Media, and specific cities in Hennepin County served by one of our newspapers, including Eden Prairie and the Lake Minnetonka area.  Once finalists were named, there was a two-week

The votes poured in. While some participants as far as Australia weighed in on the finalists, the vast majority of votes came from residents right here in the southwest metro.  Readers could vote up to once per day for each category. One participant cast 274 votes — impressive. About 450 businesses made it into the finalist round. “We don’t want to just highlight one winner and a runner-up; we want to highlight as many businesses as possible in the community,” said Vice President of Digital Strategy and Operations Scott Wyffels. Many businesses got very involved, promoting their nominations and encouraging patrons to vote by posting on social media. “The businesses get really excited about it,” Wyffels said. “I think it provides a bit of energy.” Things look different this year This year’s category makeup does look a little different than 2017. The number of categories was carved

We look forward to continuing this tradition in 2019, with the addition of specialized sections.

A WELCOME THROWBACK Step into the Lions Tap BY MARK W. OLSON editor@chaskaherald.com

L

iving in the suburbs means accepting a constant state of flux. Roads change, landscapes change, buildings change. Thank goodness one thing stays the same — Lions Tap. Once located on a sleepy Eden Prairie outpost, tucked into the Minnesota River Bluffs, this mother of all burger joints has witnessed the world change around it. And appreciative customers continue to flow in. “They keep coming back because of the quality, the service and, of course, the price,” said Bert Notermann, who owns the restaurant with wife, Bonnie, and son, Matt. The Notermann family has served up the same tasty burgers and fries at the site since 1977.

Order up! Bert and Bonnie Notermann, along with son Matt, own the beloved Lions Tap in Eden Prairie. The Best In Southwest News Media’s Best of the Best contest, Lions Tap won the Best Burger, Best French Fries and Best Lunch Spot categories. The Notermanns can throw these prizes on a stack of other “Best” awards that they haven’t had a chance to hang in an entryway of accolades. “The secret is the quality of the meat. You can take a good piece of meat and make it bad. You can’t take a bad piece of meat and make it good. We take a good piece of meat, and we keep it good,” Bert said, of the hamburgers, which are hand-pattied every day. Seasoning is another secret of success. It originated when the Notermanns owned the renowned Tri-Y Drive-In, just down the road. A few new spices were added, and a new burger legend was born. The crinkle-cut fries are sourced

from potatoes in the Pacific Northwest. “We’ve tried potatoes from other places, but they just don’t taste the same,” said Dave Wanek, Lions Tap general manager. Even minerals in the earth affect a potato’s taste, Wanek explained. Change doesn’t come quickly at Lions Tap. The last thing added to its menu was the mushroom Swiss burger — a decade ago. Bert said he’s frequently asked why Lions Tap doesn’t serve salads or soup or coffee. “Because we don’t. We just don’t. We want to do what we do to the best. The more things you have, the less you concentrate on making everything good,” he said. Staff The Notermanns give accolades to their staff. “The staff is the best,” said

Bonnie, who noted that their longesttenured employee has been with the business for 37 years. “It’s like a second family. You appreciate it. You have fun at work. You work hard, but it’s a fun environment,” Wanek said. Besides friendly staff, the building lends a lot of character to Lions Tap. The cozy restaurant has its roots as a vegetable stand in the 1930s. The Notermanns expanded the original building twice, and soon a new parking lot will add 42 additional spaces. However, the restaurant’s folksy allure remains intact:  Mounted fish on the wall? Check.  Pac-Man arcade game? Check.  Wall mural of a flock of mallards? Check.  Wood paneling? Check. “It’s a landmark, no doubt about it,”

Bonnie said. But Lions Tap hasn’t forgotten the most important ingredient to longevity — its customers. The Notermanns reminisce about how Lions Tap is often the first stop from the hospital for new parents and a baby. Customers reminisce about their senior prom dinner at Lions Tap. Generation after generation of customers keep coming through the door. “Being in it this long gives you the opportunity to watch the progression of customers,” Bonnie said. Recently a large group came to Lions Tap following the funeral of their mother. Lions Tap always served up her favorite hamburger. “We thank our customers for their support though our 41 years,” Wanek said. “They are truly the best of the best.”

ive generations of recipes and support have helped m a ke Pablo’s Mex ic a n Restaurant the high-quality family establishment it is today, its co-owner and others say. Pablo’s has stood in downtown Shakopee for 32 years, churning out enchiladas, tacos, house-made salsa and other Mexican-by-way-of-California fare. Southwest News Media readers named it the top restaurant, top Mexican restaurant and top place to eat gluten-free in the 2018 Best of the Best competition. Ron Schwaesdall, who co - owns the restaurant with his brother, Ed, thanked the restaurant’s supporters and said his family would keep on doing a great job. “I take a lot of pride in it,” Schwaesdall said. The two brothers took over for their father, Pablo, in 2015. A margarita with house-made chips and salsa. Shakopee, surrounded by farmland, Ron Schwaesdall said. Most of the restaurant’s recipes come from Pablo Schwaesdall’s Latina mother and Mexican grandmother’s traditions, down to the single olive that tops many dishes for luck. “That’s what I grew up with,” Ron Schwaesdall said. These days, his wife, Nicole, as

well as his brother’s wife and seven children among them all help out at the restaurant, whether it’s running the kitchen or waiting tables. Nicole Schwaesdall said at least one family member is always around to make sure everything’s right. “We’re all-hands-on-deck, pretty much,” she said. Ann Schwaesdall, the brothers’

mother, died about seven years ago. But Pablo Schwaesdall still comes around most weekends to visit every table and introduce himself. The family and staff’s care results in such delectable menu items as carne asada tacos overflowing with guacamole, enchiladas topped with traditional or sour cream-chipotle sauce, and fried ice cream. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday and also offers catering. Judy Fournier of Prior Lake has been going to Pablo’s regularly since it opened, always for the lunch-size, enchilada-style grande burrito, she said before digging into one. Fournier goes each winter to Arizona, no slouch in Mexican food, but “this is better,” she said of Pablo’s. Ron Schwaesdall recalled working in the kitchen years ago with his brother and both parents, arguing with each other one minute and brushing it off the next to focus on the job. “Mostly it’s good” working surrounded by family members, he said with a laugh, adding he couldn’t have taken over the restaurant without his brother. “I take a lot of pride in it,” he said. “I think we do a really good job of it.”

Best Brewery, Taphouse or Distillery and Craft Beer: Roets Sour at Roets Jordan Brewery Co. Roets Brewery had a strenuous past but is now rated the Best Brewery in the southwest metro, and won Best Local Craft Beer, Roets Sour, in our contest.

Afterward, City Administrator Tom Nikunen suggested moving into an old library on Broadway Street. So they did and opened in the winter of 2016.

Forced to move into an old library building after a devastating 2014 mudslide crushed its original home in a 150-year-old historic brewery, Roets rebounded to serve up some of the best beer in the region. The brewery had just signed the leases and was working to build up when a landslide came crashing through the back of the building.

Tim Roets, owner of the brewery, estimated 90 percent of his clientele are local residents. It’s a cozy space with big windows looking out onto downtown and a perfect place to grab a beer. Roets Sour beer, a Leipzig Gose style brew, was the top vote-getter in a crowded field for Best Craft Beer.

Roets Sour was rated the Best Craft Beer in our contest.

The first Wildfire Restaurant opened in 1995 in Chicago and has become a classic ever since. The chain has five locations in the Chicago area and one in Virginia. Their signature dishes are a horseradishcrusted filet, a chopped salad, a roasted prime rib of beef and cedar-planked salmon.

Their steaks are the star of the show with options such as a Roumanian skirt steak, the classic New York strip steak, a porterhouse and a char-crusted bone-in ribeye. Wildfire does do carryout and delivery, as well as parties, catering and special events. Other finalists were Bonfire Wood Fire Cooking, Perron’s Sul Lago, Redstone American Grill, Suzette’s Restaurant and The Noble Lion.

But it was the pizza that won our contest, and customers continually tell the restaurant that they have the best pizza around. Its pizza sauce was created in 1982 when they opened the restaurant and Clancy’s employees claim only four people have ever known the recipe. Best Tattoo Shop: InkHeart Tattoo in Chaska Amelia Westerholm’s friends always told her she should be a tattoo artist. Five years ago, the Chaska native opened InkHeart Tattoo downtown. She was born and raised in Chaska and was always involved in art one way or another. Westerholm said people come to Inkheart Tattoo for its friendly, welcoming and comforting atmosphere. They also do mostly custom designs, so customers won’t find tons of artwork to pick out, Westerholm said. For custom drawings, customers need to

schedule a free 30-minute consultation to meet with the artist of their choice and to discuss ideas and plans for the tattoo. From there, they can get inked. Best Place for a Date and to Hike: Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen There’s no better place to go on a date or hike than the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen, according to the voters in our contest. Nature and art intersect at the Arboretum, with more than 80 pieces of art on the grounds. With surrounding natural beauty, birds, gardens, trails, dining, live entertainment and more, you’ll never run out of things to talk about with your date. The Arboretum was started back in 1958 by local garden clubs and eventually became a part of the University of Minnesota. “The Arboretum has so many memories for so many people,” said public relations manager Susie Hopper. “Many people have gotten married here, had their first date

here, fallen in love here. It’s so beautiful and different each time you see it.” The Arboretum is also recognized as the top apple breeding research facility in the world with 27 commercial apples developed here including the popular honey crisp? No matter the season, there’s always something to see, do and experience at the Arboretum. Where else, for a mere $15 can you exercise, enjoy music, and art, wildlife, plants, trails and amazing decor in all seasons? And, according to a trusted source, there are lots of places to steal a kiss. According to Hopper, many have had their first date here, fallen in love here and gotten married here.

There were no other finalists.

Best Entertainment Venue: Chanhassen Dinner Theatres Locals just shook their heads when developer and big-time dreamer Herb Bloomberg decided to bring Broadwayquality musical dinner theater to the village of Chanhassen back in the late 1960s. But Bloomberg realized his dream and opened the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres in 1968 and never looked back. This year CDT celebrates its 50th anniversary. It evolved into the southwest metro’s nexus of musical and theatrical entertainment. In addition to Broadway musicals on its main stage, it has live music with its lineup of tribute bands and musical

artists. It offers improv and stand-up comedy in Stevie Ray’s Comedy Cabaret. It’s an all-in-one entertainment complex. And you don’t have to see a show to enjoy food and drinks at Brindisi’s Pub, named for CDT’s Artistic Director Michael Brindisi. The CDT is topping off its golden anniversary season with its main stage production of Irving Berlin’s musical “Holiday Inn,” featuring that the beloved holiday classic, “White Christmas.” The other finalist was Performing Institute of Minnesota in Eden Prairie.

Best Dog Park/Off-leash Area: Lake Minnewashta Regional Park in Chanhassen Best Lake: Prior Lake Prior Lake is the largest lake in the southwest metro and is divided into Upper Prior Lake and Lower Prior Lake. Prior Lake contains walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegills, crappies and bullheads for those interested in fishing. Prior Lake has two beaches — Sand Point Beach on Lower Prior Lake and Watzl’s Beach on Lower Prior Lake. Sand Point is at 14349 Crest Ave. The beach has

two picnic shelters, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a fishing pier, boat slips, canoe racks for rent and more, according to the city of Prior Lake. Watzl’s Beach is in Lakefront Park at 5000 Kop Parkway. The beach has restrooms, boat slips and picnic tables. The beach is a quarter-mile hike from parking areas. The other finalists were Lake Ann, Lake Minnetonka, Lake Minnewashta and Lake Waconia.

One local pet owner once said it best: “If I was going to be a pet anywhere, I’d want it to be Chanhassen.” That’s due in part to such easy access to Lake Minnewashta Regional Park, which boasts an 18-acre off-leash area with plenty of room for dogs both large and small — there’s a separate area for small dogs less than 25 pounds, with approximately one mile of trails, just right for their little legs. Dogs love the fenced pond, two large open spaces for interactive play with other

dogs and a water fountain for humans and pets. The fountain is available seasonally from May through September. And dogs and their owners enjoy the four seasons, from the pond and shady walks in summer, rustling through leaves in fall, plowing through snow in winter, and in spring, new foliage and lots of puddles in which to splash. Finalists were Southbridge Community Dog Park in Shakopee; Staring Lake Dog Park in Eden Prairie.

Best Sledding Hill: Staring Lake Sledding Hill The big one. El Capitan. The white whale. Any kid who grows up in Eden Prairie knows that if you come back to school on Monday having gone sledding at Staring Lake, you will be respected. Maybe that’s why it was voted Best Sledding Hill in this year’s Best of the Best contest. The city of Eden Prairie says the 700-foot sledding hill is open during winter, and while there is no tow rope, there is a warming house. Younger kids arrive by the SUV-load during the day

and careen like bumper cars down the hill. According to Day Tripper, the hill was “made for speed … a day after a snowfall, the hill becomes a smooth surface, perfect for reaching top speeds.” When the sun sets, many adolescents and teens arrive to slide down the icy slope. The Staring Lake Park Sledding Hill is at 14800 Pioneer Trail. The other finalist was Power Hill Park in Chanhassen.

Charlie’s On Prior now offers new catering options, food from a pit smoker and the lower level can be reserved for group events.
