Celebrating the best Inside the Best of the Best contest and why 2019 was the best year yet BY RACHEL MINSKE rminske@swpub.com The southwest metro has a lot to offer — from local places to grab a bite to eat or sip on a cold beer, to fitness offerings, local services and top-notch schools, there’s much to love about living and working in the area. But don’t take our word for it. Southwest News Media’s 2019 Best of the Best contest wrapped up in October with more than 35,000 votes. The contest, now in its third year, celebrates the best of what the region has to offer. Readers were invited to vote for their favorite local places to grab a coffee, play a round of golf or take their four-legged friends to get a haircut. There were 76 categories in all. “We have so many great businesses in our south metro area, and this is a great way for our readers to show their support for their favorites,” said Southwest News Media Publisher and Senior Vice President of Sales Laurie Hartmann. The annual contest has only grown since year No. 1. The popularity and visibility of the contest within
the southwest metro area has grown significantly, Hartmann said. “We’ve had business owners contact us throughout the summer months asking when the contest would be held this year, so there is definite interest on both sides,” she said. HOW DOES IT WORK? The primary rule is readers could vote for one business per category per day, said Southwest News Media’s Vice President of Digital Strategy and Operations Scott Wyffels. The top 10 vote-getters are considered finalists, with one winner. Each business must be nominated by at least three people, Wyffels said. “We only had one phase this year,” Wyffels said. “We used to separate voting and nominations into two phases.” To improve the process for audience members and businesses, Southwest News Media consolidated the nominations and voting in 2019, which reported more votes than ever. “It was fun to get the new vote total every morning,” Hartmann said of the contest, which ran Sept. 23-Oct. 13. “We surpassed last year’s number early on, so we knew our readers were doing a good job voting for their favorites.”
Best of the Best 2019 Fun Facts 35,003 votes cast in 2019, the highest totals so far in the history of the contest. 1,667 businesses received votes. 4,614 people participated in the voting. 75% of voters were female and the largest age group participating in the voting was the 33-42 bracket. The vote totals in many categories produced close winners, Hartmann said, so all finalists should be considered winners. WHAT’S NEXT? Hartmann and Wyffels both report Southwest News Media is already planning for 2020. Several business categories will be added and the company will survey some winners from the past to see how to make next year’s contest even better. “Supporting our local business community is always a good thing,” Hartmann said of the contest. “We have many great retail establishments, restaurants and service providers who are asked to contribute in many ways throughout the year. This is one way we can generate more awareness and support for them.”

Members of the Holy Family Catholic High School Class of 2019 throw their hats in the air following graduation ceremonies.
Best Private High School: Holy Family Catholic Holy Family Catholic High School opened its doors in the fall of 2000 to an inaugural class of freshman and sophomores. Today, the Victoria school educates students in grades nine through 12, offering a complete extra and co-curricular program, along with a college preparatory curriculum. The school’s mission is an exceptional faith-based learning community that is focused on helping students reach their full potential as moral and ethical leaders of the future. Holy Family Catholic emphasizes providing caring faculty and cutting-edge academic programs, offering students more than just a diploma. “Bottom line, if we boil things down to the very core and essence of what Holy Family has to offer, and frankly what sets us apart, the answer is simple. In the words of 20-year Principal Kathie Brown, ‘At Holy Family, we take care of students like no one else. When they come to us, we meet them where they are at, and then we love them too much to let them stay there,’” said Mike Brennan, president of the school. “That requires knowing each student not just by name, but by interests, strengths, and even challenges, and providing them the opportunities and support to grow and succeed,” he added. Other finalists were Southwest Christian High School of Chaska and Mayer Lutheran High School of Mayer.

Best Dance Studio: Metropolitan Dance Alliance in Shakopee

Best Public High School: Chanhassen and Shakopee high schools Chanhassen and Shakopee high schools tied for the southwest metro’s best this year. It’s hard for Principal Dick Ungar to decide what makes Chanhassen High School the best in the southwest metro. Could it be the unbelievable parents and community, the outstanding staff, the off-the-charts sports and activities? It’s a combination of all of them and more that makes the school of 1,625 students the best in the area, Ungar said. Nearly 95% of its students went onto two- or four-year colleges after graduation, Ungar added. With that kind of focus on success, he’s also keeping an eye on his students’ mental health, he said. “We know their names, and they know ours,” Ungar said. “I always laugh and call them a bunch of overachievers,” he joked. That kind of camaraderie between staff and students is important to create a community, he added. Shakopee, meanwhile, works to help students find their particular interests and prepare for life after graduation.
The Academies of Shakopee are smaller learning communities of students in teachers that focus on particular subject areas such as arts and communication or engineering and manufacturing. The elective Center for Advanced Professional Studies, meanwhile, immerses juniors and seniors in internships and other real-world experience with local businesses. Students earn dual credit with Normandale Community College. School spokeswoman Crystal McNally noted the in-school bank, culinary kitchen and simulated courtroom and hospital are among the school’s other unique facilities. “We are proud of what we are offering students and the possibility of what we could offer in the future,” she wrote in an email. Other finalists were Prior Lake High School, Chaska High School, Eden Prairie High School, Jordan High School, Waconia High School, Minnetonka High School, PiM Arts High School and Belle Plaine High School.
Metropolitan Dance Alliance is a Shakopee-based dance studio offering dance and creative movement classes for children ages 18 months to 18 years, said owner Jennifer Carlson. “W hat makes Metropolitan Dance Alliance so special is our commitment to not only providing a high quality dance education, but also our long-standing commitment to inspire each student to be the best they can be,” she said. The dance studio aims to build self-esteem and confidence in its students so they dream big and aim high, Carlson said. “We work to achieve these goals though our caring, compassionate, highly qualified teachers who
have over 100 years of combined dance teaching experience, as well as our commitment to community engagement and outreach,” she said. The dance studio, 1159 Shakopee Town Square, has been in the local community for 50 years. The finalists were Dance Arts Centre in Chanhassen, The Dance Warehouse in Chanhassen, Premiere Dance Academy in Prior Lake, Center Stage Dance Studio in Prior Lake, Shana’s Dance Studio in Savage, Creo Arts & Dance Conservatory in Minnetonka, Chaska School of Dance, River Valley Dance Academy in Chaska and U Can Danz! Food and Drink Nothing’s changed, and at Wampach’s, that’s a good thing BY MADDIE DEBILZAN mdebilzan@swpub.com If you ask Mary Johnson, the owner of Wampach’s in Shakopee, to describe the food that fills the parking lot to the brim on a rainy Tuesday morning, she’ll shrug. “It’s just like the food your grandma probably made.” For a restaurant as bustling as Wampach’s, there is nothing glamorous to report on. The walls are the same beige as was stylish in the ‘60s, the booths are hard and brown, and the view out the windows is either a parking lot or County Highway 101. And this isn’t a vintage, “we’retrying-to-look-and-feel-retro” kind of diner, either. It just hasn’t changed since it was first purchased by Jerome Wampach in the late 1950s. As roads and developments and superintendents have ebbed and flowed in Shakopee, Wampach’s has remained the same, frozen in time. Wampach’s claimed its permanent place in downtown Shakopee when the small-town diner truly belonged to a small town. But residents still claim it as theirs, and Southwest News Media readers voted its no-nonsense comfort food as the best breakfast in the 2019 Best of the Best competition. The most popular meals are basic meat-and-potatoes type meals — literally. Eggs, meat and potatoes are the most-frequently ordered menu items, Johnson said. Other popular menu items are liver — “we sell so much liver it’s not even funny” — and hot beef sandwiches. And Jell-O, of course.

Wampach’s restaurant, 126 1st Ave. W., in downtown Shakopee was voted best breakfast in Southwest News Media’s Best of the Best competition. Each day, there is a new Jell-O color offered to customers, most of whom are regulars. The food is comforting because it reminds Shakopee residents of a time before Valleyfair and Canterbury Park traffic, before the Highway 169 bridge connected city goers to corn growers, when they could walk into a restaurant and be greeted by name and asked if they’d like the “usual.” Johnson, who has been working for Wampach’s since she was in ninth grade, said she’s been waiting on some
of the same customers since she was 16 years old. Many staff members have been waiting or cooking for 10 years, and those aren’t even the veterans. Lynn Sorenson, a cook, estimates she’s been at Wampach’s for 30 years. Waitress Keye Schill has worked there 27 years. The customers and staff would all like to see a few things change, but then again, they don’t want anything to change. Because what makes Wampach’s — well, Wampach’s — is that nothing has changed.
In the main dining area, there’s a photo of the restaurant that used to stand where Wampach’s stands now, and the house that was there before that. When Johnson purchased Wampach’s from the late Jerome Wampach in 2001, the house adjacent to the restaurant came with the restaurant, so she now lives next door to the diner. “That’s how it always was, they told me,” Johnson said. “So I bought the house with the restaurant.” José Medel and Rupe Rosas come to Wampach’s about twice a week before they start their shifts at the body shop across the street. They order the usual: an omelette with potatoes and coffee, as they sit across from each other in their usual booth. “It’s too good,” Rosas said, adding he’s been a customer at Wampach’s for 10 to 12 years. He can’t remember. Time flies, except for inside this place.

The people have spoken: ‘Drink Roets Beer’ BY MICHAEL STRASBURG mstrasburg@swpub.com Roets Jordan Brewery has a simple but effective slogan: “Drink Roets Beer.” And for three straight years, Best of the Best voters have been doing just that. After only three years in business, Roets Jordan Brewery has topped Best of the Best craft beer categories in as many years. The establishment also took home top honors in the Best Brewery, Taphouse, Cidery or Distillery categories. Dylan Roets says his father’s punk rock ethos informs the style of brewing at Roets. By “punk rock” he doesn’t mean tattoos, ripped up clothes and loud guitars; rather, he’s referring to the stripped-down, authentic and passion-driven approach that Tim Roets’

Roets Brewery only has three full-time employees: Tim Roets (left) and his sons Dylan (right) and P.J. 35 years of homebrewing experience brings to the table. The brewery doesn’t rely on gim-
micks and flash to sell their beer. Take, for example, the name of their berry sour: “berry sour.” Their stout beer?
“Stout.” Even the company motto, emblazoned on their coasters, glasses and art-deco mirror behind the taproom bar, is no frills: “Drink Roet’s Beer.” Tim Roets is focused on letting the quality of his beer speak for itself, and for three years, it has. “Tim is the definition of passionate — you can learn everything about what you’re drinking from him,” Ray Sandey said. Tim Roets background in sales required him to travel, giving him access to some of the finest beer in the world. “I had been to Germany, France, the Caribbean; I had territory in the late1990s in Colorado, the Pacific Northwest and California, where the whole craft beer thing started,” Tim Roets said. When he moved to Minnesota in the early 2000s, Tim become heavily

FOOD AND DRINK involved in the state’s homebrewing scene by participating in countless contests. As a transplant, engaging in the hobby is how he made friends. “I like to say most of the people I know in Minnesota I met over a beer,” Tim Roets said. When the time came to go pro, Roets and his two sons Dylan and P.J. eyed the old brewery complex in Jordan. Roets said the traffic along Highway 21 made Jordan an ideal spot. But in 2014, after Jordan was drenched with 14 inches of rain, a mudslide blasted through the back of the building — effectively ending Roets plans in Jordan. Over the next year, Roets struck a deal to move into another building along Highway 21. The space isn’t as large as most breweries and, in a way, that’s been a blessing for Roets. Limited space means Roets beers are brewed in small batches, allowing for experimentation and constant variety. “We’re very fortunate that (Tim’s) recipe writing is at a level where we can be so agile,” Dylan Roets said. “We’re done with a beer in 3-4 weeks, it’s gone. A lot of people would be intimidated and think ‘I need my nine or 10 flagship beers and I’ll rotate a couple oddballs in once in a while,’ but we’re off the cuff constantly.” Roets has two flagship beers that are on tap for about 35 weeks of the year. Otherwise there are about 10 beers on tap that cover a broad spectrum. “We try to have something for every beer drinker,” Tim Roets said. “We’ve got light, medium, dark; hoppy and not hoppy; less fruity and more fruity. We brew to give you the best list every week, so that if you bring a

friend who doesn’t like beer we’ll have a hard seltzer or a fruit beer.” In keeping with the experimental, small-batch mentality, Roets doesn’t distribute their beer, so the only option is to drink at the taproom. As a result, creating a welcoming community at the bar is a priority. To do that, Tim Roets relies on a small, knowledgeable and dedicated staff of six — including himself and his sons. “Everybody who works behind my bar brews beer,” Tim Roets said. “That’s what they do for a living. I’m changing 3-5 beers a week sometimes, at least two, so
Best Mexican Restaurant, Best Place to Eat Gluten Free and Best Taco: Pablo’s Mexican Restaurant in Shakopee What’s the secret to surviving more than 30 years in the restaurant business? Tried and true recipes and a whole lot of heart. That’s the case with this year’s winner of the best Mexican restaurant, which also took home top honors for best place to eat gluten free and best taco. Pablo’s was the family project of the Schwaesdall family, who moved from Los Angeles to Shakopee in the late ‘80s. Originally headed by Pablo Schwaesdall and his wife, Ann, the California-style Mexican restaurant is now run by the second and third generations of the family. Ed and Ron Schwaesdall continue on their family’s legacy with Mexican food you can’t get anywhere else. Ed said patrons who have been visiting for years and have moved away, place Pablo’s as one of their first stops when they’re back in town. “Over the years we’ve created a real following of people who enjoy our southern Californian-Mexican
food and that’s what keeps bringing people back,” Ed said. Ed said that making gluten free entrees didn’t take much with the importance of corn in Mexican cooking. And it’s payed off ten fold. “I think it’s a huge attraction to our restaurant,” Ed said. “We actually take it to heart when they come in.”
you’ve got to keep up and know what you’re talking about.” That pub mentality spreads to the customers too. Out in the beer garden, Jordan couple Ray and Rhonda Sandey strike up a conversation with a couple from Prior Lake and invite them to sit at their table. “It feels like more of a neighborhood or family thing,” Rhonda Sandey said. “You go to some places and it feels like you’re a patron — here it feels like family.” Overall, Roets customer base is about half local, half visitors. Tim said local customers been great supporters, but visitors is where they see the most growth. “Beer tourism is what drives our business,” Tim said. “We’re trying to put out the best possible product in terms of beer and we think we put out great service.” In addition to being named “Best of the Best,” one of the most fulfilling moments for Roets is when his beer is part of important moments in people’s lives. One memorable instance was last November when Roets brewed a special cranberry radler for a fundraiser at The Ridges at Sand Creek. “People lined up and we had to go back to the brewery and get two more cases of that one,” Tim Roets said. “It was amazing, we had to shut off the tap at the brewery.” Roets soon ran out, but started making a list of individuals who wanted to purchase a growler of the special cranberry beer later at the taproom. By the end of the night he had a list of 85 different names. “I was on 85 thanksgiving tables,” he said. “That was like a bucket filler, it’s just awesome. That’s what gets us really excited.”

Nothing Bundt Cakes was voted best bakery in the southwest suburbs. With her co-owner Jill Tullemans, Johnson runs the bakery that was Nothing Bundt Cake’s first location in Minnesota. She’s worked there for four years and said the cakes are a “game changer” for her — and for the customers who try them. “It’s a wow factor when they have our cakes for the first time,” Johnson said. “The cakes speak for themselves.” Nothing Bundt Cakes aims for a nostalgic aesthetic, reminiscent of bygone era but with updated and delicious recipes, she said.

Best Sushi Kona Grill in Eden Prairie When General Manager Steve Thomas was asked about the Kona Grill’s award-winning sushi, he said it tastes amazing and looks beautiful. He then flipped the script. “You eat with your eyes before your taste buds,” said Thomas. While Kona’s sushi does indeed look amazing, it starts with quality fresh fish. “We get it delivered six days per week,” said Thomas. “They knock on the door at 9 a.m.” Kona Grill’s corporate office is based in Arizona. There are two locations in Minnesota, one in Eden Prairie (11997 Singletree Lane) and one in Minnetonka (12235 Wayzata Blvd.). The Eden Prairie location celebrated its 10th anniversary in September.
In addition to its award winning sushi, it boasts one of the area’s best Happy Hours. Its menu features sandwiches, barbecue ribs, steaks, jambalaya, snapper, stir fry, etc. A scratch kitchen makes homemade sauces and dressings. “The sushi is the deal,” said Thomas, “For the groups that come here, it’s part of their jam.” Finalists include Sake Sushi in Chaska, Yumi’s Sushi Bar in Excelsior, Kyoto Sushi in Savage, Kai’s Sushi and Grille in Chanhassen, Tokyo Sushi and Grill, Miyabi Sushi & Asian Bistro in Excelsior, Kyoto in Eden Prairie, K & B Fish Company in Waconia and Sapporo Sushi Restaurant in Shakopee.
Best Specialty Pizza: Margarita — Punch Pizza Eden Prairie Punch Pizza’s margarita pizza at its Eden Prairie location was voted the best specialty pizza in the southwest metro. The simple pie, baked in a wood fire oven, blends basil, mozzarella, tomato sauce and dough into the quintessential pizza delight. Punch Pizza opened its first location in Highland Park in 1996. Eden Prairie’s pizzeria, which opened in 2002, was its second location. Best Steak: Wildfire Eden Prairie The key to Wildfire’s exquisite steaks is consistency, according to the restaurant’s General Manager Jason Burt. Eden Prairie’s Wildfire − the only one in Minnesota − has used the same meat purveyors for every one of its 18 years in the city, Burt said. That’s what makes the steaks so great. “It starts with the cut of meat. We’re very selective,” Burt said. Chefs also let the steaks rest after cooking to “let the juices settle,” he added. The first Wildfire opened in 1995 in Chicago, blocks from Michigan Avenue, and quickly became a classic spot with its dark woods and jazzy music. The chain has five locations in the Chicago area and one in Virginia. Its signature dishes are a horseradish
crusted filet, a chopped salad, a roasted prime rib of beef and cedar planked salmon. Their steaks are the star of the show with options such as a Roumanian skirt steak, the classic New York strip steak, a porterhouse and a char crusted bonein ribeye. Store director Zach Shank said it comes down to being a good neighbor and anticipating customers’ needs. “Just the customer service and the focus that we keep on taking care of our customers and making them feel welcome,” Shank said. “We try to
go above and beyond and give them more than what they’re looking for.” The Shakopee location features a liquor store, Starbucks, pharmacy, gas station, a full-service restaurant with a bar and a 150-seat dining area. The smoked turkey breast is dressed with a basil aioli and rests on a bed of forest greens, tomato, bacon and gouda cheese. Best Antique Store: Linda’s Cellar The schedule for Linda’s Cellar is one of the many unique things about the antique and gift store. The dubbed pop-up store only opens one weekend every month and often one or two other dates throughout the month — announced via its Facebook page. Linda Heger, owner of Linda’s Cellar, spends the rest of the month finding antiques to repurpose and sell and connecting with other vendors who set up in her store. She then sets up her store with themed corners and displays. Some of the vendors, like her, find antiques to resell or repurpose and others make items like pillows, mittens, flannels and candles. Heger said some shoppers come in every month just to buy Lantern Hill Candles, one of her vendors. Heger has been in the antique business for about 20 years — for about eight years in her current location at 110 E.

Best Place of Worship: Guardian Angels Catholic Church Its date stone says it was built in 1885, but the Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Chaska has been a place of worship for longer than that. “Its history gives it a different feel,” said Lisa Staudohar, Guardian Angels’ Director of Marketing and Development. Walk inside and that feeling is reverence. “You feel the holy presence of God,” said Staudohar. “It (the inside of the church) is also incredibly beautiful. When I take someone over there, the first thing people say when they walk inside is, ‘Wow.’” The priests at Guardian Angels Catholic Church offer mass in Spanish at noon on Sundays. Its school, pre-K through eighth grade, is located across the street. “We have alumni who went to the school in the early 1900s,” said Staudohar. “They’re living in the area and still attending church.” Finalists include: Westwood Community Church in Excelsior, St. Michael Catholic Church in Prior Lake, Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Excelsior, St. Victoria Catholic Church in Victoria, River Valley Church – Shakopee

Best Athletic Race: Firecracker 5k Submitted Photo
The Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Chaska dates back to the 1800s. Its school, pre-K through eighth grade, is located across the street. At noon on Sundays, priests say mass in Spanish. Campus, St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan, St. Hubert Catholic Church in Chanhassen, Hosanna Church in Shakopee, Shepard of the Lake Lutheran Church in Prior Lake and Friendship Church in Shakopee.
In its 44th year, the Firecracker 5K in Excelsior is a patriotic sea of red, white and blue that brings the community together, said Laura Hotvet, executive director of the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce, a co-sponsor of the event. This is what earned the race, the title “best of the best” in Hotvet’s opinion. “The Lake Minnetonka Fourth of July Firecracker races — the 1-mile, 5K and 10K — continue to be an important multi-generational tradition for groups of friends and families to do together,” Hotvet said. “Every Fourth of July,
you’ll find a massive sea of runners dressed in red, white and blue flowing down Water Street, serenaded by American flags waving and festive cheering all along the way. Instantly, you’ll be in the spirit of our national holiday.” The event is co-sponsored by Minnetonka Community Education and raises money for the Excelsior Fourth of July fireworks display. Finalists for the title of best athletic race include the Minnesota IronMan Bike Ride in Shakopee, Smoke Signals Ride for Mobility in Prior Lake, and Run of the Mill in Jordan.

And if you are hungry for something a little more casual, there’s simple Italian cuisine too that can fill you up, including pizza, lasagna and meatball sandwiches.
There’s also a plenty of wine to choose from. The setting is cozy and intimate, perfect for that all-important impression on a first date or to create even more fireworks in your already established relationship. Other finalists included Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and The Noble Lion.
