elcome to the 2012-2013 Chanhassen Resident’s Guide. This Chanhassen Villager publication is a comprehensive directory of information and resources used by Chanhassen businesses and residents, especially those who are new to this area. The Resident’s Guide is a compilation of valuable information — a single source for lists of services, names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. Keep it handy; use it often. Our apologies in advance for omissions or for changes that occur after publication. The challenge in publishing this Resident’s Guide is not only collecting accurate and important information, but keeping that information current in one of the Twin Cities’ fastest-growing areas. If you would like additional copies of this publication, call our Circulation Depar tment at 952-345-6682. The Resident ’s Guide is a lso available at www.chanhassenresidentsguide.com. Welcome to Chanhassen!
With a population of 22,952, Chanhassen offers the best of rural and suburban life — it’s a great place to live, work and play! Most of the city’s 14,427 acres are in Carver County, with 154 in Hennepin County. Five major highways traverse the community — including the new Highway 212 freeway — allowing residents and commuters to reach other metropolitan communities in minutes. Businesses include a variety of commercial and industrial companies. Office and warehouse buildings are located throughout the city. Since 1995, the city has added 2.5 million square feet of commercial/industrial space. The approximately 500 businesses employ more than 9,500 people. Two public school districts, Minnetonka and District 112, as well as private schools, serve the families in the community. Residents and students also welcomed the 2009 opening of Chanhassen High School, the second high school for District 112. There is much to do and enjoy in Chanhassen. The downtown area offers shopping, dining and entertainment — including the renowned Chanhassen Dinner Theatres — as well as a library and many service and retail businesses. For outdoor enthusiasts, Chanhassen has 11 lakes that offer recreation and relaxation to residents and visitors to the community. The city’s 500-acre park system features community and neighborhood parks, as well as 70 miles of trails and sidewalks for people of all ages. The park system also features five nature preserves. Additionally, the Chanhassen Senior Center is a social gathering spot for those over age 55.

Our scratch kitchen is what truly separates us from the pack. While most casual restaurants use microwaves and pre-assembled or pre-cooked ingredients, everything on our menu is made the hard way – from scratch. Chanhassen City Council Chanhassen operates under the “Optional Plan B” form of government as authorized by Minnesota statutes. Under this plan, the elected city council consists of a mayor and four council members. The mayor and council members are elected to four-year terms. Elections are held in even-numbered years and coincide with general elections conducted in November. All council positions are representatives at-large. All policy decisions and legislative activities are the responsibility of the council, but the administrative duties are delegated to the city manager, who is appointed by the council. The commissions and advisory boards are appointed by the city council. The city manager appoints all other city staff. Appointment of the city attorney is subject to approval by the council.

Household Hazardous Waste Household hazardous waste must be disposed of properly to avoid endangering health and contaminating ground water. These wastes include: solvents, household cleaners, pesticides, paint, wood preservatives, aerosols, batteries, automotive oil and antifreeze. The best way to handle the waste – except those that are banned – is to use it or give it to someone who will. If these options are not available to you, please contact the county for collection information. Sellers of automotive products may take used automotive waste, perhaps for a fee. Check before bringing the waste in. The county also schedules periodic hazardous waste collection programs.

innetonka Schools are focused on world-class child-centered excellence and serve the western third of Minnetonka and all or parts of Chanhassen, Deephaven, Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood, Tonka Bay, Victoria and Woodland. There are more than 8,300 students enrolled in Minnetonka schools. In total there are six elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (Gr. 6-8), one high school (Gr. 9-12), and a community education center that houses many of the district’s early childhood, youth and adult programs. Minnetonka Public Schools offers a variety of learning opportunities for families, including Chinese or Spanish Immersion as an option at each of its six elementary schools beginning in kindergarten. In the Immersion program, English-speaking students learn a second language as part of regular classroom activities. About 50 percent of the District’s kindergarteners enroll in the traditional kindergarten program (taught in English) and about 50 percent enroll in one of the language immersion options. Kindergarten families may also choose a half-day or extended day program. Before and after school child care is available at each school.

Chanhassen Parks
Residents take pride in the city park system, which has 34 community, neighborhood and open space locations with over 70 miles of trails. The City of Chanhassen’s plan is to provide a park within a half-mile of every resident’s front door. With the exception of some of Chanhassen’s more rural areas, this goal has been attained. Carver County operates the 350-acre Minnewashta Regional Park in western Chanhassen. On its southern border is the Minnesota River Valley Wildlife Refuge. The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum borders Chanhassen to the west. Call Chanhassen Parks & Recreation at 952-227-1121 to make picnic reservations or to reserve a volleyball kit.
Bandimere Community Park 9405 Great Plains Blvd. This 32-acre community park is located on Highway 101 just south of Lyman Boulevard. A youth athletic complex, it has an internal trail system, three ballfields, three soccer fields, playground equipment and parking. Chanhassen Recreation Center/Bluff Creek Elementary site 2310 Coulter Blvd. This school/recreation site has more than 20 acres of open space and is home to the 23,000-square-foot Chanhassen Recreation Center. It has a park shelter, five ballfields, two lighted hockey rinks, four lighted tennis courts and an open skate area.
Park Nature Preserves

The beach has lifeguards on duty (mid-June to late August), usually from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (weather permitting). Concessions and boat rentals are available daily during the summer months from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (weather permitting). It also has two picnic/recreation shelters, reservation picnic sites, tennis court, six ballfields, soccer field, canoe racks available for rent, volleyball, trails, boat access and a fishing pier. City Center Park 7700 Market Blvd. This 10-acre park — jointly owned by the City of Chanhassen and School District 112 — lies adjacent to City Hall and Chanhassen Elementary School. The park has four ballfields, five soccer fields, four tennis courts, three basketball courts, a skating rink, hockey rink, skate park and playground. Skate Park — open from sunrise to sunset. Skateboards, bicycles and in-line skates are welcome at the skate park. Protective helmets and appropriate footwear are mandatory. Spectators must stay clear of the ramp area. For information, call Park & Recreation at 952-227-1100. Lake Susan Park 903 Lake Dr. E. This 33-acre community park has a reservation picnic shelter, two sand volleyball courts, two tennis courts, baseball field, basketball court, archery range, playground equipment, canoe racks available for rent, fishing pier, boat access, trail and a swimming beach (lifeguards are not on duty at this site).
Bluff Creek Preserve Headwaters North of Highway 5, East of Highway 41 The Bluff Creek trail winds its way through this large expanse of wetland and upland habitat. Three separate parcels totaling approximately 49 acres have been assembled to date. When complete the Bluff Creek Preserve will include more than 120 acres of varied habitats. This preserve creates an important wildlife travel corridor in the center of the community. Access is available from a variety of neighborhood trail connections. Chanhassen Nature Preserve Coulter Blvd. This 112-acre wetland complex is the largest city-owned nature preserve within Chanhassen’s borders. Only the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and county-owned Minnewashta Regional Park boast larger nature areas. Lake Susan Preserve Powers Blvd. Approximately 60 acres in size, this preserve is easily noticed while driving south on Powers Boulevard. A trail connection leading from Lake Susan Community Park to the preserve is well worth the walk. Pleasant View Preserve Pleasant View Rd. Nestled in one of the many crooks of Pleasant View Road is this small but wooded preserve. The property is located at the south end of Silver Lake Park. A local deer herd frequents this area.

Emerald Crest memory care communities are very unique. Unlike others, we specialize in caring for those with memory loss at all stages. Our communities are gatherings of homes, with only 15 suites per home. Our setting is designed to encourage socialization, enhance ability, and allow for personalized care and supervision 24/7. Through our Cognitive Care Program, our registered occupational therapist creates meaningful and purposeful programs. A wide variety of programs occur daily, seven days a week, including evenings. Our professional staff of RNs, OTRs, and support services care for both medical and psychosocial needs. Residents enjoy three meals a day, housekeeping, laundry, exercise programs, and an inviting, outdoor patio. Individualized personal care, nursing care, and therapies are available.
