A place to heal Hazelden to become one of many local addiction treatment options BY MOLLEE FRANCISCO mfrancisco@swpub.com

Twenty-two. Each week in Chaska, there are 22 opportunities to attend a 12-step meeting and confront addiction head on. The meetings in Chaska are offered six days a week at recovery centers, churches and even in the basement of the American Legion. By comparison, Shakopee has just six such meetings. “Chaska’s clearly got something special,” said Ben Palmby, director of operations at Five Stars Recovery Center in downtown Chaska. “This community is very supportive of people in recovery.” Chaska’s offerings are about to get more diverse as the renowned Minnesota addiction treatment center Hazelden prepares to open the doors of its new outpatient clinic in the Hazeltine Gates building on the north side of town. They join Five Stars Recovery in downtown Chaska and Northland Counseling Services (located in the Two Twelve Medical Center) in providing addiction treatment services to the local area.

It didn’t take any of the Americans very long to realize they were far from the comforts of their lives in suburban Minnesota. “We were in the middle of a civil war where 250,000 people had been killed,” said Haines. “Armies were oppressing the poor.”

As this winter has progressed, construction on the new Southwest Christian High School has made the building more and more visible to those passing by the intersection of Highway 212 and Bavaria Road in Chaska. “We look forward to becoming a bigger part of the Chaska community,” said Head of School Dan Beckering. Construction has prog ressed well due to the exceptionally warm winter. “We’ve been blessed with a wonderful stretch of weather that has allowed us to make a lot of headway, more than we thought we would have by now,” said Randy Nelson, the project supervisor with Bossardt Corporation. In August, the school plans to move from its current location on Peavey Road to the new building on Bavaria Road. The school walls have been visible along the Bavaria Road and Highway 212 intersection for a few months now. Currently, construction crews are working to get the whole building enclosed. “Once we do that and the roof is completed, we’ll be able to heat the
