121-year-old steamboat charts course for Carver Tug may dock downtown by end of week BY MARK W. OLSON editor@chaskaherald.com
Officials hope a boat that once tugged cargo around the Chesapeake Bay will now tug tourists to downtown Carver. There are still a few details to work out, but if all goes as planned, “Northwind,” a 33-foot-long steam tugboat built in 1890, will fi nd a new home in downtown Carver shortly before Steamboat Days. “I think we just need to get more attractions downtown, and it’s emblematic of Steamboat Days,” said Carver resident John von Walter, who is guiding the acquisition. At its Aug. 1 meeting, the Carver City Council voted 5-0 to acquire the steamboat, which is being donated
by St. Paul resident Gene Cassidy. The city will buy a trailer to haul the steel boat to Carver and prepare its new home. An earlier estimated moving expense of $ 8,000 has dropped to $4,000, and the nonprofit Carver-on-the-Minnesota plans to help with some of the moving costs, said von Walter who is president of Carver-on-the-Minnesota and also serves on the Carver Heritage Preservation Commission. “For Steamboat Days, it would be awesome. We could potentially pull it in the parade,” said Mayor Greg Osterdyk. “It would be a great centerpiece.” “I would be OK with the city stepping up and assuming the risk,” said

Ever since she was a little girl growing up in Chaska, Jenna (Moeger) Myrland has known her purpose in life. “I’ve always felt that we’re all connected,” she said. “If someone’s suffering, that reflects on me.”
A devastating earthquake in Haiti, a deadly famine in Somalia, civil war in Uganda – wherever people in the world are in need of aid, Myrland is trying to get them help. “It’s been my life commitment from the start,” she said. “When I was growing up, I was very much drawn to and desirous of understanding how people could be treated differently – especially with respect to race,” she added.
