at amcknight@swpub.com. Chanhassen offers great quality of life and has been recognized in a host of national rankings for being a great place to live, work and play! Most of the city’s 14,427 acres are in Carver County, with 154 in Hennepin County. Five major highways traverse the community — including Highway 212 — allowing residents and commuters to reach other metropolitan communities in minutes. Two public school districts, Minnetonka and District 112, as well as private schools, serve the families in the community. There is much to do and enjoy in Chanhassen. The downtown area offers shopping, dining and entertainment — including the landmark Chanhassen Dinner Theatres — as well as a library and many service and retail businesses. For outdoor enthusiasts, Chanhassen has 11 lakes that offer recreation and relaxation to residents and visitors to the community. The city’s park system features more than 30 community and neighborhood parks, as well as over 100 miles of trails for people of all ages. The park system also features 14 nature preserves. LOTS TO DRAW VISITORS FROM NEAR AND FAR

hen it comes to attractions, Chanhassen can boast of plenty. The Chanhassen Dinner Theatres (CDT) is nationally recognized for its quality music theater and for being the largest dinner theater in the United States. In recent years, the CDT has expanded its entertainment offerings with live music acts, a comedy club and a lively pub. For nature lovers, the University of Minnesota’s Landscape Arboretum is a living catalog of the upper Midwest’s plants, flowers, trees and vegetation. For something out of the ordinary, Chanhassen resident Claire Becker recommends touring the Temple of Eckankar. “I lived in Chanhassen for 19 years before finally bothering to check out the huge pyramid in the middle of it and let me tell you it is not what I expected,” Becker says. The temple is the world headquarters for Eckankar, a modern-day religion founded in 1965. And there is Paisley Park, the home and music studio of international pop musician Prince Rogers Nelson, which has gained even more attention since his untimely death in April 2016. Months after Prince’s death, fans from around the world continue to make a pilgrimage to Paisley Park to lay flowers, hang purple balloons and tie letters and cards to the fence surrounding the studio. Chanhassen resident Jessica Boevers regrets that she never

In recent years, the once reclusive Prince began hosting impromptu concerts and dance parties at Paisley Park. “I’d always meant to go to Paisley Park,” Boevers said. “And now it’s too late.” But Boevers and her son Joshua have taken advantage of most other local attractions. “We go to the beaches, the library, the free music in the park,” Boevers says. “We love using the trail ... we’ll take our bikes a couple times a week. My husband and I rented paddleboards at Lake Ann. It was a lot of fun. And my son Joshua has enjoyed participating in the weekly Discovery Playground each summer, and Lake Ann Adventure camp for one week in the summer. Both are offered through the Parks and Recreation Department, and I’m continually impressed by the quality of playground leaders that the department hires. “For the first time last February, we took our chances searching for the medallion together during Feb Fest. We didn’t find it but gained some experience for next year’s hunt! “We have visited nearly every park within Chanhassen,” Boevers said. “One summer we made it our goal to go to a new one each week for a month. And we’ve spent many hours at the Arboretum using our membership a few years ago. We read the Villager thoroughly each week, looking for activities and events in and around Chanhassen that we can take part in.”

ATTRACTIONS PARKS Residents take pride in the city park system, which has more than 35 community, neighborhood and open space locations with over 90 miles of trails. The city of Chanhassen’s plan is to provide a park within a half-mile of every resident’s front door. With the exception of some of Chanhassen’s more rural areas, this goal has been attained. Carver County operates the 350acre Minnewashta Regional Park in western Chanhassen. On its southern border is the Minnesota River Valley Wildlife Refuge. The city is also home to University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Call Chanhassen Parks & Recreation at 952-227-1121 to make picnic reservations. COMMUNITY PARKS Lake Ann Park 1456 W. 78th St. This 102-acre community park is located approximately one-half mile west of Powers Boulevard (County Road 17) and West 78th Street. The beach has lifeguards on duty (mid-June to late August weather permitting). Concessions and boat rentals are available daily during the summer months. It also has two picnic/recreation shelters, reservation picnic sites, tennis court, six ballfields, soccer field, canoe racks available for rent, volleyball, trails, boat access and a fishing pier. City Center Park 7700 Market Blvd. This 10-acre park — jointly owned by the city of Chanhassen and School District 112 — lies adjacent to City Hall and Chanhassen Elementary School. The park has four ballfields, five soccer fields, four tennis courts, three basketball courts, a skating rink, hockey rink, skate park and playground. Skate Park — Open from sunrise to sunset. Skateboards, bicycles and in-line skates are welcome at the skate park. Protective helmets and appropriate footwear are mandatory. Spectators must stay clear of the ramp area. Lake Susan Park 903 Lake Dr. E. This 33-acre community park has a reservation picnic shelter, two sand volleyball courts, two tennis courts, baseball field, basketball court, archery range, playground equipment, canoe racks available for rent, fishing pier, boat access, trail and a swimming beach (lifeguards are not on duty at this site). Bandimere Community Park 9405 Great Plains Blvd. This 32-acre community park is located on Highway 101 just south of Lyman Boulevard. A youth athletic complex, it has an internal trail system, three ballfields, three soccer fields, a disc golf course, playground equipment and parking. NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS Bandimere Heights Park 9290 Kiowa Tr. This four-acre park is adjacent to Bandimere Community Park. It has an open playing field, basketball court, trail connection to Bandimere Community Park and off-street parking. Carver Beach Park 6891 Lotus Tr. This six-acre linear park along the northwest shoreline of Lotus Lake has two beaches, a small playground, picnic area, canoe rack, fishing dock and off-street parking.

Chanhassen Hills Park 8579 Chanhassen Hills Dr. S. This seven-acre park has a ballfield, basketball half-court, playground, sand volleyball court, trail and offstreet parking. Curry Farms Park 1300 Stratton Ct. This six-acre park has a playground, basketball half-court, open field, off-street parking and a loop trail.

Kerber Pond Park 7380 Kerber Blvd. This 27-acre park is primarily composed of open space with a trail that winds through the park encompassing the pond. It is intended to be a passive facility, accommodating the observation of plants and wildlife in a natural environment. Picnic sites are located along Kerber Boulevard.

Greenwood Shores Park 7110 Utica Ln. This three-acre park abuts both Lake Ann and Lake Lucy. The site includes a beach on Lake Ann, picnic area and a trail connection to Lake Ann Park.

Meadow Green Park 921 Pontiac Ln. This 13-acre park provides ballfields for a variety of youth sport teams. It has a picnic shelter, playground, basketball half-court, tennis courts, picnic tables, off-street parking and a trail connection.

Herman Field Park 2591 Forest Ave. This 12-acre park has an open field, picnic area, playground, off-street parking and natural areas.

Minnewashta Heights Park 6220 Dogwood Ave. This two-acre site has a picnic area, playground, basketball half-court and an open field.

Roundhouse Park 3950 Kings Rd. This eight-acre park includes the “Roundhouse Park Building,” winter skating, playground, beach on Lake Minnewashta, picnic area, walking trail, fishing pier, open field and off-street parking.

South Lotus Lake Park 7610 South Shore Dr. This nine-acre park consist s of three separate parcels. One borders Lotus Lake and includes a boat access. The upland portions have a playground, open field, tennis courts and off-street parking. Stone Creek Park 2250 Stone Creek Ln. E. This eight-acre site has play equipment, basketball-half court, sledding hill, open field and trail connection. Much of the park is heavily wooded. Sugarbush Park 7220 Galpin Blvd. This five-acre park has a playground, basketball half-court and open field. Trail connections and off-street parking are available. Sunset Ridge Park 1364 Lake Susan Hills Dr. This nine-acre park has a playground, basketball half-court, open field, ball field, trail connections and off-street parking.

NATURE PRESERVES Bluff Creek Preserve Headwaters North of Hwy. 5, east of Hwy. 41 The Bluff Creek trail winds its way through this large expanse of wetland and upland habitat. Three separate parcels totaling approximately 49 acres have been assembled to date. When complete the Bluff Creek Preserve will include more than 120 acres of varied habitats. This preserve creates an important wildlife travel corridor in the center of the community. Access is available from a variety of neighborhood trail connections. Chanhassen Nature Preserve Coulter Blvd. This 112-acre wetland complex is the largest city-owned nature preserve within Chanhassen’s borders. Only the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and countyowned Minnewashta Regional Park boast larger nature areas.

ATTRACTIONS Lake Susan Preserve Powers Blvd. Approximately 60 acres in size, this preserve is easily noticed while driving south on Powers Boulevard. A trail connection leading from Lake Susan Community Park to the preserve is well worth the walk. Pleasant View Preserve Pleasant View Rd. Nestled in one of the many crooks of Pleasant View Road is this small but wooded preserve. The property is located at the south end of Silver Lake Park. A local deer herd frequents this area. Rice Marsh Lake Park Preserve Dakota Lane A natural extension of Rice Marsh Lake Park, this 70-plus-acre preserve is largely comprised of a rich cattail wetland. The preserve extends eastward into Eden Prairie. ATTRACTIONS Rapids Lake Education and Visitor Center 15865 Carver Highlands Dr. Carver 952-361-4500 www.fws.gov/refuge/Minnesota_valley Made up of 14 separate units, the 14,000-acre Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge runs from Bloomington to Henderson, along both sides of the Minnesota River, to provide 4,700 acres of outdoor opportunities such as hiking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, wildlife observation and photography as posted on Refuge interpretive signs. Seminary Fen Seminary Fen is a 73-acre Scientific and Natural (SNA) area located next to County Road 61 in southern Chanhassen. Named for an old seminary that was once located on the site, the Seminary Fen SNA contains one of the rarest types of wetland in the United States called a calcareous fen. A calcareous fen is wetland characterized by a substrate of non-acidic peat and an upwelling of cold oxygen-poor groundwater rich in calcium and magnesium bicarbonates. The fen is fed by upwelling groundwater from bedrock aquifers below the Minnesota River Valley. Fens have been protected since 1991 in Minnesota by the state’s Wetland Conservation Act. The site contains eight species of state-listed rare plants and important wildlife habitat.

RECREATION Chanhassen Recreation Center 2310 Coulter Blvd. 952-227-1400 The recreation center, which is attached to Bluff Creek Elementary School, offers open gymnasiums, an aerobics/dance room, a fitness room with various pieces of strength equipment, community meeting rooms and a conference room. Community meeting rooms and the conference room can be rented. Various youth and adult programs are offered through the Chanhassen Recreation Department. Approximately 20 acres of this

LAKES Much of the recreational activity in Chanhassen year-round revolves around lakes in the community. Here is an overview of select Chanhassen lakes: Christmas Lake Features: 276 acres, stocked with excess brood stock trout through a program of the DNR. Northern,

bass and panfish also present. Public access in Shorewood. Maximum depth of 87 feet. Lake Lucy Features: 90 acres, some panfish present, poor population of most game fish. No public access. Maximum depth of 20 feet. Lake Ann Features: 117 acres, good for bass, sunfish and crappies. Trolling motors only. Maximum depth of 45 feet. Good for canoeing and other non-motorized watercraft. Swimming beach. Lake Minnewashta Features: 680 acres, abundant in bass, sunfish, small northern pike. Popular in summer and winter. Two p ublic accesses at Minnewashta Park. Maximum depth of 70 feet. Swimming beach. Lake St. Joe Features: 14 acres, small, unimproved access of f of Minnewashta Parkway. Canoes are appropriate. Maximum depth of 52 feet. Lotus Lake Features: 240 acres, stocked with walleye every two or three years. Popular year-round for crappie, sunfish, northern pike and bass. Public access on the south end. Maximum depth of 29 feet. Lake Susan Features: 93 acres, fished by locals; mainly panfish. Walleye and bass fry have been introduced. Public access at Lake Susan Park. Maximum depth of 17 feet.

TRAILS Chanhassen prides itself on providing a comprehensive, multipurpose trail system. Trails are readily available to all neighborhoods in Chanhassen. The city has built and maintains 90 miles of trails. Many of the city’s trails are located in natural resource corridors and accommodate walkers, runners and bicyclists. There is also access to regional trails, including the Dakota Rail Regional Trail, the Southwest Regional Trail Connection between Chaska and Victoria, and the Minnesota River Bluffs Regional Trail. Annual Festivals Chanhassen promotes several annual community events with the support of the business community and local organizations. Feb Fest is an annual celebration on the first Saturday of February on Lake Ann and includes a variety of activities, including an ice fishing contest. A summer concert series takes place on Thursdays from June through mid-August featuring musical performances at City Center Park Plaza. The city’s Fourth of July Celebration spans three days and is packed with family activities. The Fourth of July parade and fireworks over Lake Ann attract thousands to the community. An annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in City Center Park kicks of the holiday season.

hat are you in the mood for? Cooking up a storm in your own kitchen? Home chefs have a wide variety of places to shop for ingredients with three downtown grocery stores, and in summer, the Saturday morning farmers market in City Center Park offers fresh produce, vegetables, and fruits. And to set off a table setting, gorgeous freshly cut flowers. The nearby Minnesota Landscape Arboretum offers a variety of cooking classes and workshops throughout the year. It’s annual summer Taste and Toast fundraiser introduces a cross-section of local trendsetting restaurants, wineries and breweries. For those looking to eat out, Chanhassen has plenty of choices, from all-American burgers and fries, barbeque ribs, pizza and pasta, to restaurants with international dishes from pad Thai noodles to sushi. And there’s always the option of takeout and delivery, too. Claire Becker, Chanhassen resident and a student attending the University of Minnesota, with an affinity for all-day breakfast places, describes Chanhassen’s restaurant choices this way. “Chanhassen gets wild in the food department,” Becker muses. “You can find Thai food, Italian street food, barbecue, Chinese, diner food, fine dining, cafés, coffee shops, bakeries, sandwich shops, pizza places, and places that sell half-priced pie and all-you-can eat pancakes past 12 p.m.”

The Chan restaurant scene is primarily fast or semi-fast eating options.” But Brownlee does believe that “the few ‘sit-down’ restaurants offer fairly reasonably priced, good food options.”

t’s not bragging if it’s true, right? Judging by the quantity of awards and recognition the city of Chanhassen has received in recent years, Chanhassen is, hands down, one of the best places to live in Minnesota, and in the United States. The most recent honor came from Money Magazine in August 2015 when it named Chanhassen as the one of the “Best Places to Live” in the nation, coming in at No. 7. In 2013, Money ranked Chanhassen as fourth Best Place to Live. It’s also made national lists as one of the Top Ten Cities in America to Raise a Family, Best Small Town in Minnesota, and Best Small Town in the Country. For Chanhassen resident Don Shilling, the accolades are well deserved. “I think [the recognition] is earned,” Shilling says. “I don’t think the honor comes lightly. It takes lots of effort from the city and city council to make things happen. When we moved here in 1989, there was a barn and farm where the current Byerly’s is now, and no Target. So we’ve watched Chanhassen grow around us. “What I like,” Shilling said, “is that the city kept its vision of a main street and downtown. We like that a lot ... the services that were needed have come to the town — grocery stores, the dinner theater, restaurants, the movie theater. There’s a lot to do in downtown.” Bob Lokhorst gives city government a thumbs up, too. “Chanhassen has a great mayor and a great city council to make sure Chanhassen is headed in the right direction,” Lokhorst

CHANHASSEN CITY COUNCIL Chanhassen operates under the “Optional Plan B” form of government as authorized by Minnesota statutes. Under this plan, the elected city council consists of a mayor and four council members. The mayor and council members are elected to four-year terms. Elections are held in even-numbered years and coincide with general elections conducted in November. All council positions are representatives at-large. All policy decisions and legislative activities are the responsibility of the council, but the administrative duties are delegated to the city manager, who is appointed by the council. GOVERNMENT Winter Parking On street parking is prohibited between Nov. 1 and April 1 between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. On-street parking is also prohibited when there is two inches or more of snow on a street until the street has been plowed curb to curb. Representatives of the Carver County Sheriff’s Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and community service officer shall have the authority to impound vehicles in violation. Summer Lawn Watering Chanhassen has an odd/even-watering restriction in effect from May 1 to Sept. 30 each year. For more information, call 952-227-1100. HUMAN SERVICES Social Services Many social service programs are provided by government. In most cases, federal, state and local funds are administered through county agencies. The following programs — many mandated, some locally initiated — are offered by Carver County Social Services, a department of the County of Carver. Many are available only to people who meet income criteria, but others are available on a sliding fee scale, while still others are available to any county resident. The programs are separated into four categories: Social Services; Mental Health Services; Financial Assistance; and Employment/ Training. WASTE DISPOSAL Garbage Collection The city of Chanhassen does not provide garbage service. It is up to each resident to contact a hauler licensed with the city. Haulers are also required to provide recycling services, including recycling containers. There are also a number of licensed haulers of commercial, construction/demo and roll-off garbage. Call the city of Chanhassen at 952227-1100 for more information about these services. Carver County Environmental Center 116 Peavey Circle, Chaska 952-361-1835 Recyclables and household hazardous waste may be dropped off at this site, in many cases at no cost. The center also will collect items such as yard waste, electronics, appliances for a fee. The Center features a product reuse area and an environmental education clearing house. Items, such as composting bins and radon test kits, also are for sale. Household Hazardous Waste Household hazardous waste must be disposed of properly to avoid endangering health and contaminating ground water. These wastes include: solvents, household cleaners, pesticides, paint, wood preservatives, aerosols, batteries, automotive oil and antifreeze. The best way to handle the waste – except

those that are banned – is to use it or give it to someone who will. If these options are not available to you, please contact the county for collection information. Sellers of automotive products may take used automotive waste, perhaps for a fee. Check before bringing the waste in. The county also schedules periodic hazardous waste collection programs.

WATERSHEDS

You must be registered to vote. In Minnesota, you may register before Election Day or on Election Day at your polling place. Your registration remains current until you move, change your name or do not vote for four consecutive years. The comprehensive trail and park system throughout the city makes it a breeze for residents to simply step out the door and enjoy a walk, a run, or a bike ride. The city’s many fitness centers include the Chanhassen Recreation Center for exercise and fitness programs and equipment. “That the city houses an airport-sized fitness club definitely doesn’t hurt Chanhassen in the health department,” Claire Becker says. Becker, a Chanhassen native, currently attends the University of Minnesota. “And its zillions of beautiful parks, lakes and the Arboretum aren’t bad for wellbeing either. When I was kid, my neighbors and I used to beg our parents to drive us to Lake Ann so we could run around and pretend to be pirates on the playground and mermaids in the lake. Way better than sitting inside all day.” When residents need more than a brisk walk or a bike ride to feel good, there’s a wide selection of health care facilities to choose from. When Emily Mattran and her family moved to Chanhassen in 1989, Powers Boulevard was still a two-lane road, Mattran recalls, and they could take walks next to farm fields. “All the things we needed at that time required a drive,” Mattran says. She and her family have watched the city grow up around them; growth finally making it possible to stay in town to buy groceries, see a movie, and to see a doctor. “When my health care clinic finally moved out here, that was a big plus for me,” Mattran says. “It’s so nice to have urgent care and my primary doctor in town. It’s so much easier to get an appointment, too, instead of trying to schedule appointments and driving to get in at the larger clinics located closer to Minneapolis.”

hen it’s time to relax and play, Chanhassen residents have to make choices. What’s your preference? There’s pickleball at the Recreation Center — a racquet game perfect for all ages, not just seniors — Pokeman Go all around town and at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, free summertime concerts in the park, biking and hiking on city trails, special nights out at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres entertainment complex — musical theater, live music acts, and a comedy club, karaoke in a downtown bar, or a night out at the movie theater. Bob Lokhorst enjoys the city’s trail system. “I love the bike trails and it’s a good way to tour the area and find out where places are located,” Lokhorst says. “I have biked to Victoria, the Carver Park Reserve, to Hopkins and to other places all on the great trails, some maintained by the Three Rivers Park District. “The parks have great sandy beaches and fishing docks and playgrounds for the little ones,” Lokhorst adds. “You can enjoy a picnic at one of the parks near you. Another fun outing is to watch the home town baseball team, The Red Birds, play ball at the Storm Red Birds stadium at Chanhassen High School.

hat makes Chanhassen a great place to live? For casual passersby, it may look similar to other Twin Cities suburbs with restaurants, big box stores, ubiquitous coffee shops and fitness centers. Not so fast. When asked, Chanhassen residents spoke up loud and clear. Chanhassen is different, and it’s the difference that drew them, and has kept them here. Truth be told, when Jim and Darla Olson moved to Chanhassen 23 years ago from Edina, Jim admitted it “felt so far from the Twin Cities it was like we were in South Dakota. At the time the city had a rural feel to it,” Olson says with a laugh. “But we’ve watched it more than double in size; the community has grown up around us. Initially, we were outsiders, but a quarter of century later, we’re engaged in the community. Chanhassen is safe and friendly, and now offers so many services. The city is a good size, we have good schools — public and private, churches, a good variety of food/restaurants, particularly in the last two years. The city government and the mayor are doing a good job. The list goes on.” Referencing the city’s recognition by Money Magazine and other national publications for its quality of life, Olson feels “we’ve earned the accolades we’ve gotten. It’s a good place. We like that we have country on one side of us and city on the other side. We feel we live in the best of both worlds.”

Australian native Kirstyn Sansom and her Iowa-born husband moved to Minnesota, first to Eden Prairie, then Chanhassen, in 2010. The couple met in Melbourne when when Sansom’s future husband had an internship that turned into a job. They chose Chanhassen because “I didn’t want to move to Iowa,” Sansom admits, “which is where my husband is from.” There are no regrets. “We love it for the recreation, the proximity of everything,” Sansom says. “We have a multitude of grocery stores, good parks, good trails. We have two children, ages 2 and 5, and the city is ideal for families.” “I like the smaller town feel,” Sansom says. “I can literally walk to the grocery store. And we love the July 4th celebration. The carnival and family night is great. We put out our blankets the night before the parade, we love the fireworks, the kiddie parade ... the community the people are just so nice. We’ve had friends visit from Australia and other countries, and they can’t believe how people are ridiculously nice here. Mr. G’s manager [Mr. G is an Australian-based mural artist who painted the Prince memorial mural in downtown Chanhassen in July 2016] even commented to me, ‘No wonder Prince never left this place.’

LIVING EASTERN CARVER COUNTY SCHOOLS SCHOOL DISTRICT 112 Eastern Carver County Schools is a growing school system serving more than 9,000 students in Carver, Chanhassen, Chaska and Victoria. The district includes seven elementary schools (1-5), three middle schools (6-8) and two high schools. All-day kindergarten is offered at the Kindergarten Center and in five elementary schools. La Academia is a dual language Spanish immersion school (K-5) and the Integrated Arts Academy is an alternative learning center serving 9th-12th- graders. CONVENIENCES OF BIG CITY WITH SMALL-TOWN FEEL

n informal poll of Chanhassen residents reveals that nearly everything a person might need is within walking distance or an short car ride in the city. That wasn’t always the case. Chanhassen resident Emily Mattran remembers when the nearest grocery store was a Kenny’s Market; anything more than milk and cereal meant driving to the Cub in Eden Prairie, Mattran remembers. “Since then, the city’s grown, and we’ve really enjoyed the mix of new businesses and services. The downtown has a cohesiveness, and feels friendly. There’s been a real effort at the city level to make it a welcoming, friendly small town. And that’s been a concern, that we continue to keep the downtown center of Chanhassen a vital place. I hope the city continues to make a concerted effort to keep the vibrancy downtown ... from the historic church, the music in the park, and the beautiful public library.” Others agree. For Chanhassen resident Kevin Griswold, “Everything is right here. Retail, doctors, dentists ... everything including wonderful boutique shops.” For George and Susan Borchardt, nearly everything they need is within three miles of their Chanhassen home. “We have retail at all levels including grocery, hardware, and general provisions.” Still, there’s always room for improvement. moved to Chanhassen 20 years ago, from St. Louis Park. “We gave up the convenience and proximity to downtown theaters, shows and sporting events to a quieter neighborhood to raise our son,” Porter recalls. “Although the city has recently added more restaurants than in our last 20 years here, we still miss a local TGIF’s or similar [restaurant]. “I also wish the city would expand the Saturday farmer’s market to include more vendors to create some competition and variety for fresh produce. “I have a lot of criticisms,” Porter says,”but I really do like living here. I have many of the conveniences of a big city but I still feel like I live in a small town. “And lastly, the best three things about Chanhassen are the library, the Fourth of July celebration, and the Arboretum. Honorable mentions are the variety of grocery stores and liquor stores.”

Plans for a new $20 million water treatment plant were approved Monday in a split vote by the Chanhassen City Council. The plant will remove iron and manganese from household water in the western part of the city and eliminate periodic discoloration of water experienced by some homeowners. Four homeowners’ associations had banded together to urge the city to rethink the location and type of treatment plant to be constructed. The city purchased land at 2070 Lake Harrison Road in 2005 for a potential future water plant and the site was identified as a future water treatment plant in the city’s 2008 long-term master plan. According to a city report, in 2003, five sites were reviewed for a potential site of a second treatment plant. All were in the Galpin Boulevard area due to its proximity to the city’s well field. The 6.5-acre Lake Harrison Road site was selected based on size, feasibility, availability for purchase and cost. The proposed water treatment plant will include one main building designed to look like a residential structure; a driveway, loading area, and parking lot; and a tank that will be almost entirely submerged.

hanhassen loves its pets. The city’s trails and parks provide pet owners and their four-legged friends plenty of walking and running space. And for those who like to run free, off-leash, Carver County’s Lake Minnewashta Regional Park offers an off leash park with areas for both large and small dogs. It’s a favorite destination for Chanhassen resident Kevin Griswwold. “We take a lot of walks,” Griswold says. “We love the paths and especially visit Kerber Pond regularly. And the dog park at Lake Minnewashta — our two dogs love it there.” The Three Rivers Park District’s Carver Park Reserve, just down the road in Victoria, also has a 27-acre dog park, and in the spring of 2016, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum opened up a 65-acre dog commons and trail system, recognizing the therapeutic effects for the mind, body and spirit by recreating with man’s best friend in nature. The city has a variety of veterinarian clinics, pet grooming/ spas, and kennels, even a doggie daycare, to make sure pets enjoy a quality of life on par with their humans. “[Chanhassen] is pet-friendly and most pet owners abide by the leash rules,” observes resident Al Lokhorst, “and through the pets we have met very nice people.” So is Chanhassen a great place for pets, or what? “Never have I seen happier or more spoiled pets than in the city of Chanhassen,” Claire Becker says. Becker, a Chanhassen native, and a University of Minnesota student, says “I don’t even think my cat moves anymore, she just lays on our screened-in porch in the sun for days. And my neighbor’s dog gets fed so many apples that he’ll probably never need to see a doctor again. If I was going to be a pet anywhere, I’d want it to be Chanhassen.”

PET LICENSES PET INFORMATION The city of Chanhassen does not require pet licenses, but both cats and dogs are required to have some identification on them that would assist animal control in contacting the owner. Types of identification include microchips, veterinarian-issued rabies tags, or any tags or collars with contact information and phone numbers inscribed on them. Rabies Vaccinations All dogs and cats over six months of age and kept as a pet are required to be vaccinated against rabies. Kennel Permit Any household with more than two two dogs, more than three cats or any combination of four or more dogs or cats over six months of age is required to obtain a private kennel permit. Carver-Scott Humane Society The Carver-Scott Humane Society serves Carver and Scott counties as well as a portion of Hennepin County. The organization has a location in downtown Chaska but the majority of all abandoned pets are housed in foster care until permanent adoption. The humane society frequently hosts pet adoption days. At the new space in downtown Chaska at 210 Chestnut Street North, the organization houses up to 12 cats on site.
