This publication offers a directory of information and resources used by Chanhassen area businesses and residents, especially those who are new to this area. Chanhassen offers great quality of life and has been
recognized in a host of national rankings for being a great place to live, work and play! Most of the city’s 14,427 acres are in Carver County, with 154 in Hennepin County. Five major highways traverse the community — including Highway 212 — allowing residents and commuters to reach other metropolitan communities in minutes. Two public school districts, Minnetonka and Eastern Carver County, as well as private schools, serve the families in the community. There is much to do and enjoy in Chanhassen. The downtown area offers shopping, dining and entertainment — including the landmark Chanhassen Dinner Theatres — as well as a library and many service and retail businesses. For outdoor enthusiasts, Chanhassen has 11 lakes that offer recreation and relaxation to residents and visitors to the community. The city’s park system features more than 30 community and neighborhood parks, as well as over 100 miles of trails for people of all ages. The park system also features 14 nature preserves. Additionally, the Chanhassen Senior Center is a social gathering spot for those over age 55.

ANTICIPATING A BRIGHT FUTURE W
elcome to Chanhassen, Minnesota! On May 8, 2017, we celebrated our city’s 50th anniversary with over 300 of our closest friends in City Center Park. It was a beautiful evening for connection, reflection, and celebration. Whether you were with us that evening, I invite you to share your Chanhassen story — about your neighborhood, your work, or something memorable you experienced recently. Share with friends and family why Chanhassen is special to you. While you think about your story, I will share part of mine. Here are a few highlights from my 22 years as a Chanhassen resident: Parks and trails: While raising my family, we frequented many of the parks, but as mayor I might even visit them more! There are
always things happening in our 40plus parks and 100-plus miles of trails. You’re sure to find a bike or running race, picnics, ball games, fishing and boating, and have you seen our new pickleball courts? They’re popping up everywhere! U n i ve r s it y o f M i n n e s ot a Landscape Arboretum: Recently selected by social media followers as the No. 1 botanical garden in America. With over 4 0 0 , 0 0 0 v i s i t o r s a n n u a l l y, there are many stories tied to the Arboretum. Spring blooms, summer adventures, fall harvest and gorgeous winter landscapes. Family enter tainment for all seasons! Chanhassen Dinner Theatres: Quickly approaching its 50th a n ni ve r s a r y a s well! Watch for exciting changes and announcements throughout the end of this year and into 2018.
Festivals: The city of Chanhassen puts on incredible festivals. Between the Fourth of July, Feb Fest, and the roughly 25 other events throughout the year, there is almost always something Chan-Happenin’ here! Paisley Park: It is hard to believe Paisley Park opened as a museum almost a year ago. And let’s not forget the beautiful Prince mural on the movie theater wall! While the story of Chanhassen is always changing we have lived by the simple philosophy of “A Community for Life: Providing for Today and Planning for Tomorrow.” During this celebrator y year reflecting on the last 50 years and anticipating the next 50, I think it is appropriate to add “And Anticipating a Bright Future.” Whether you’re a first time visitor, a recent addition, or a long time member of our community,

hen international pop star Prince Rogers Nelson died at his home at Paisley Park April 21, 2016, the world’s media swarmed Chanhassen to cover the tragedy. But few mentioned the city of Chanhassen, instead referring to Paisley Park’s location as “outside of Minneapolis.” Their loss. What out-of-towners didn’t realize is that Chanhassen is the epicenter of world-renowned attractions. Not only Paisley Park, but the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and its University of Minnesota research center and Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. Those in the know realize that, in addition to being home to Prince’s Paisley Park, now a museum and mecca for his international fan base, Chanhassen is also known as home to other nationally recognized attractions. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, voted America’s Best Botanical Garden, is world-renowned for its vast collection of flowers, plants, shrubs and trees throughout its 1,137 acres of woodland, wetlands and prairie. Every season inspires visitors with a changing palette of colors and blooms. In addition to blooms, the Arboretum boasts a sculpture collection by international artists, highlighted by the Harrison Sculpture Garden at High Point. Chanhassen is also home to the nation’s largest dinner theater — Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. Its main stage brings popular and classic musicals to life. The Fireside Theatre features tribute groups that perform the music near and dear to ages ranging from millennials to baby boomers. Since Prince’s death, Paisley Park has opened its doors to his fans. Visitors can tour his studio and nightclub, and enjoy After Dark dance and film parties. Finally, let’s not forget Chanhassen’s own home-grown

Chanhassen is famous for its 4th of July Celebration. The three-day citywide festival includes a carnival, live music and dancing, a classic car show, contests at Lake Ann, and a spectacular July 4 parade through downtown. It’s so popular and draws so many people that spectators place their lawn chairs along the parade route the night before. And the Fourth is capped off with a fireworks show at Lake Ann.
ATTRACTIONS PARKS Residents take pride in the city park system, which has more than 35 community, neighborhood and open space locations with over 90 miles of trails. The city of Chanhassen’s plan is to provide a park within a half-mile of every resident’s front door. With the exception of some of Chanhassen’s more rural areas, this goal has been attained. Carver County operates the 350acre Minnewashta Regional Park in western Chanhassen. On its southern border is the Minnesota River Valley Wildlife Refuge. The city is also home to University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Call Chanhassen Parks & Recreation at 952-227-1121 to make picnic reservations. COMMUNITY PARKS Lake Ann Park 1456 W. 78th St. This 102-acre community park is located approximately one-half mile west of Powers Boulevard (County Road 17) and West 78th Street. The beach has lifeguards on duty (mid-June to late August weather permitting). Concessions and boat rentals are available daily during the summer months. It also has two picnic/recreation shelters, reservation picnic sites, tennis court, six ballfields, soccer field, canoe racks available for rent, volleyball, trails, boat access and a fishing pier. City Center Park 7700 Market Blvd. This 10-acre park — jointly owned by the city of Chanhassen and School District 112 — lies adjacent to Cit y Hall and Chanhassen Elementary School. The park has four ballfields, five soccer fields, four tennis courts, three basketball courts, a skating rink, hockey rink, skate park and playground. Skate Park — Open from sunrise to sunset. Skateboards, bicycles and in-line skates are welcome at the skate park. Protective helmets and appropriate footwear are mandator y. Sp ec tators must stay clear of the ramp area. Lake Susan Park 903 Lake Drive E. This 33-acre community park has a reservation picnic shelter, two sand volleyball courts, two tennis courts, baseball field, basketball court, archery range, playground equipment, canoe racks available for rent, fishing pier, boat access, trail and a swimming beach (lifeguards are not on duty at this site). Bandimere Community Park 9405 Great Plains Blvd. This 32-acre community park is located on Highway 101 just south of Lyman Boulevard. A youth athletic complex, it has an internal trail system, three ballfields, three soccer fields, a disc golf course, playground equipment and parking. NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS Bandimere Heights Park 9290 Kiowa Trail This four-acre park is adjacent to Bandimere Community Park. It has an open playing field, basketball court, trail connection to Bandimere Community Park and off-street parking. Carver Beach Park 6891 Lotus Trail This six-acre linear park along the northwest shoreline of Lotus Lake has two beaches, a small playground, picnic area, canoe rack, fishing dock and off-street parking. Carver Beach Playground 900 Carver Beach Road This two-acre park features a large playground, a ball field and basketball half-court. Cathcart Park 26655 W. 62nd St. This neighborhood park is owned by the city of Shorewood but lies within the city of Chanhassen. The park has a ballfield, tennis court, playground, basketball court, offstreet parking and a hockey rink with warming house. Chanhassen Estates Park 55 Lake Drive E. A one-acre park in Chanhassen Estates (south of McDonald’s) has an open field, playground and a basketball half-court.
Chanhassen Hills Park 8579 Chanhassen Hills Drive S. This seven-acre park has a ballfield, basketball half-court, playground, sand volleyball court, trail and offstreet parking. Curry Farms Park 1300 Stratton Court This six-acre park has a playground, basketball half-court, open field, off-street parking and a loop trail. Greenwood Shores Park 7110 Utica Lane This three-acre park abuts both Lake Ann and Lake Lucy. The site includes a beach on Lake Ann, picnic area and a trail connection to Lake Ann Park. Herman Field Park 2591 Forest Ave. This 12-acre park has an open field, picnic area, playground, off-street parking and natural areas. Kerber Pond Park 7380 Kerber Blvd. This 27-acre park is primarily
composed of open space with a trail that winds through the park encompassing the pond. It is intended to be a passive facility, accommodating the observation of plants and wildlife in a natural environment. Picnic sites are located along Kerber Boulevard. Meadow Green Park 921 Pontiac Lane T h is 13 -a c re p a r k p rov i d e s ballfields for a variety of youth sp or t teams . Power Hill Park 8702 Flamingo Drive This 22-acre site has a picnic shelter, sledding hill, open field, play area, basketball court, trail loop and off-street parking. Prairie Knoll Park 1124 Dove Court T h i s f o u r- a c r e p a r k h a s a playground, basketball half-court, open field and trail connection. Rice Marsh Lake Park 8119 Erie Circle This four-acre park contains a picnic area, playground, trail connections, ballfield, basketball court and off-street parking. Riley Ridge Park 8959 Reflections Road This 19-acre park is comprised of a combination of woodlands, wetlands, and active play areas. The park opened in 2013 and features a large playground, picnic shelter, basketball half-court, sledding hill, trail loop, and offstreet parking. Roundhouse Park 3950 Kings Road This eight-acre park includes the “Roundhouse Park Building ,” winter skating, playground, beach on Lake Minnewashta, picnic area, walking trail, fishing pier, open field and off-street parking. South Lotus Lake Park 7610 South Shore Drive This nine-acre park consist s of three separate parcels. One

borders Lotus Lake and includes a boat access. The upland portions have a playground, open field, tennis cour t s and of f-street parking. Stone Creek Park 2250 Stone Creek Lane E. This eight-acre site has play equipment, basketball-half court, sledding hill, open field and trail connection. Much of the park is heavily wooded. Sugarbush Park 7220 Galpin Blvd. This five-acre park has a playground, basketball half-court and open field. Trail connections and off-street parking are available. Sunset Ridge Park 1364 Lake Susan Hills Drive This nine-acre park has a playgro un d , basketball halfcourt, open field, ball field, trail connections and off-street parking.
NATURE PRESERVES Bluff Creek Preserve Headwaters North of Hwy. 5, east of Hwy. 41 The Bluff Creek trail winds its way through this large expanse of wetland and upland habitat. Three separate parcels totaling approximately 49 acres have been assembled to date. When complete the Bluff Creek Preserve will include more than 120 acres of varied habitats. This preserve creates an important wildlife travel corridor in the center of the community. Access is available from a variety of neighborhood trail connections. Chanhassen Nature Preserve Coulter Blvd. This 112-acre wetland complex is the largest city-owned nature preserve within Chanhassen’s borders. Only the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and countyowned Minnewashta Regional Park boast larger nature areas. Lake Susan Preserve Powers Blvd. Approximately 60 acres in size, this

Olson) preserve is easily noticed while driving south on Powers Boulevard. A trail connection leading from Lake Susan Community Park to the preserve is well worth the walk. Pleasant View Preserve Pleasant View Road Nestled in one of the many crooks of Pleasant View Road is this small but wooded preserve. The property is located at the south end of Silver Lake Park. A local deer herd frequents this area. Rice Marsh Lake Park Preserve Dakota Lane A natural extension of Rice Marsh L ake Park, this 70 -plus-acre preserve is largely comprised of a rich cattail wetland. The preserve ex tends east ward into Eden Prairie. Bloomington 952-854-5900 Rapids Lake Education and Visitor Center 15865 Carver Highlands Drive Carver 952-361-4500 www.fws.gov/refuge/Minnesota_ valley Made up of 14 separate units, the 14,000-acre Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge runs from Bloomington to Henderson, along both sides of the Minnesota River, to provide 4,700 acres of outdoor opportunities such as hiking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, wildlife observation and photography as posted on Refuge interpretive signs. Seminary Fen S e mina r y Fe n is a 73 -a c re Scientific and Natural (SNA) area located next to County Road 61 in southern Chanhassen. Named for an old seminary that was once located on the site, the Seminary Fen SNA contains one of the rarest types of wetland in the United States called a calcareous fen. A calcareous fen is wetland characterized by a substrate of non-acidic peat and an upwelling of cold oxygen-poor groundwater rich in calcium and magnesium bicarbonates. Much of the recreational activity in Chanhassen year-round revolves around lakes in the community. Here is an overview of select Chanhassen lakes:

Approximately 20 acres of this 40-acre site are dedicated to a community park containing six multipurpose ball fields, four lighted tennis courts, two lighted in-line skating/hockey rinks, ice skating facilities, warming house, soccer fields, trails, a park shelter, concession stand, parking and other support facilities. Lake Lucy Features: 90 acres, some panfish present, poor population of most game fish . No public access. Maximum depth of 20 feet. Lake Ann Features: 117 acres, good for bass, sunfish and crappies. Trolling motors only. Maximum depth of 45 feet. Good for canoeing and other non-motorized watercraft. Swimming beach. Lake Minnewashta Features: 680 acres, abundant in bass, sunfish, small northern pike. Popular in summer and winter. Two public accesses at Minnewashta Park. Maximum depth of 70 feet. Swimming beach. Lake St. Joe F e a t u r e s : 14 a c r e s , s m a l l , unimproved access of f of Minnewashta Parkway. Canoes are appropriate. Maximum depth of 52 feet. Lotus Lake Features: 240 acres, stocked with walleye every two or three years. Popular year-round for crappie, sunfish, northern pike and bass. Public access on the south end. Maximum depth of 29 feet. Lake Susan Features: 93 acres, fished by locals; mainly panfish. Walleye and bass fry have been introduced. Public access at Lake Susan Park. Maximum depth of 17 feet. Rice Marsh Lake Features: 79 acres, a marsh not suitable for summer fishing. Some
ice fishing does occur. Maximum depth of 11 feet. No public access. Lake Riley Features: 300 acres, good northern population. Crappies are present in good numbers; some bass and walleye present. Public access in Eden Prairie. Maximum depth of 49 feet. Swimming beach.

Annual Festivals Chanhassen promotes several annual community events with the support of the business community and local organizations. Feb Fest is an annual celebration on the first Saturday of February on Lake Ann and includes a variety of activities, including an ice fishing contest. A summer concert series takes place on Thursdays from June through mid-August featuring musical performances at City Center Park Plaza. The city’s 4th of July Celebration spans three days and is packed with family activities. The Fourth of July parade and fireworks over Lake Ann attract thousands to the community. An annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in City Center Park kicks of the holiday season.

t’s hard to imagine, but once upon a time, going out to eat in a restaurant was a special treat — something families did to celebrate a birthday, a great report card or some other achievement. People who grew up in Chanhassen in the 1950s and 1960s recall when dining out in Chanhassen meant going to a local drive-in — Maxine’s, Snuffy’s, Tri-Y, Reed’s and the Lazy C. “They’re where area residents ate hamburgers and fries, drank Cokes and chocolate shakes in their cars,” Sandy Rodenz said. “Going out to eat then was a treat, something special, because most families ate at home.” Times and lifestyles have changed and Chanhassen’s food scene reflects today’s families and their more adventurous tastes. While pizzas and hamburgers still reign supreme — there’s no limit to chains and franchises — locals have a taste for more international fare. Sushi is no longer a novelty, but a popular meal to share with friends on a night out. Want Thai pho’ noodles or Korean bibimbopi? Let’s head to downtown Chanhassen. And, for those who love to cook at home, the city’s grocery stores offer plenty of authentic ingredients for any type of cuisine a gourmet could fancy. In summer, the city’s popular farmers market offers locally grown vegetables, produce, meats, along with locally made
breads, jams and jellies. And don’t forget the buckets of fresh flowers. Our food evolution has plenty of local enthusiasts, for example, Bob and Cheryl Ayotte, longtime Chanhassen residents. “When we first moved to Chanhassen, there were two types of restaurants,” Bob says. “A hamburger spot and a high-end place where you couldn’t wear jeans and you paid $4 for a martini.” “And then the evolution,” Bob said. “It took 20 years. But today, we have it all. If you want Italian, Thai, Tex-Mex, Japanese, Korean, you can get it. And if you want something more highclass you can get that too. The martinis may still be more than $4, but now I can wear my jeans.”

his year, the city of Chanhassen celebrates its 50th anniversary. On May 8, 1967, the village of Chanhassen and the township of Chanhassen merged to form the modern city we recognize today. The city unveiled a special 50th anniversary flag and has been celebrating throughout the year. Since it’s founding, the city has been quickly evolving. “Chanhassen: A Centennial History” quoted a 1970s newspaper editorial: “No question about it. Chanhassen will grow and with it, the need for more city services, offices and storage space. City records are kept now stored in hallways, damp closets and at the unsecured Lake Ann barn.” A referendum to build a new city hall passed on Nov. 7, 1979. Since then, 7700 Market Boulevard, Chanhassen has been the nucleus of city life. That’s the location of Chanhassen City Hall, which also serves as the Chanhassen Senior Center. Just a stone’s throw from the building, residents can find the Chanhassen Library, Chanhassen Fire Department, City Center Community Park and Chanhassen Elementary School. And all of this is just a short walk from the community’s downtown 78th Street retail district. However, residents don’t need to visit 7700 Market Boulevard to get in engaged in the civic process. Technology has made it easy to access Chanhassen city records. Agendas, minutes and documents of city meetings — even filed videos — are available online to residents. CITY COUNCIL Chanhassen operates under the “Optional Plan B” form of government as authorized by Minnesota statutes. Under this plan, the elected city council consists of a mayor and four council members. The mayor and council members are elected to four-year terms. Elections are held in even-numbered years and coincide with general elections conducted in November. All council positions are representatives at-large. All policy decisions and legislative activities are the responsibility of the council, but the administrative duties are delegated to the city manager, who is appointed by the council. The commissions and advisory boards are appointed by the city council. The city manager appoints all other city staff. Appointment of the city attorney is subject to approval by the council.

GOVERNMENT Winter Parking On street parking is prohibited between Nov. 1 and April 1 between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. On-street parking is also prohibited when there is two inches or more of snow on a street until the street has been plowed curb to curb. Representatives of the Carver County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, and community service officer shall have the authority to impound vehicles in violation. Summer Lawn Watering Chanhassen has an odd/even-watering restriction in effect from May 1 to Sept. 30 each year. For more information, call 952-227-1100. Pets Chanhassen city code requires pets to have current rabies vaccination. For information regarding pets, call 952-227-1100. No dog or cat shall be allowed to run at-large. Pets must be under restraint at all times when off the owner’s property. Violators are subject to a fine and risk impound of the animal. Permits The city of Chanhassen requires a building permit if you plan to: • Erect, construct, enlarge, move, improve, remove, convert, demolish, equip, use, occupy, or maintain any building or structure, including fences, storage sheds, decks, and swimming pools. • Permits are also required for plumbing and heating alterations and additions, including central air conditioning, water softeners, and lawn irrigation equipment. • Zoning permits are required for the construction of structures that do not require building permits.

Household Hazardous Waste Household hazardous waste must be disposed of properly to avoid endangering health and contaminating ground water. These wastes include: solvents, household cleaners, pesticides, paint, wood preservatives, aerosols, batteries, automotive oil and antifreeze. The best way to handle the waste – except those that are banned – is to use it or give it to someone who will. If these options are not available to you, please contact the county for collection information. Sellers of automotive products may take used automotive waste, perhaps for a fee. Check before bringing the waste in. The county also schedules periodic hazardous waste collection programs.

ealth is kind of a big deal in Carver County. In fact, the county has ranked first in health outcomes (including measures such as quality and length of life) among all Minnesota counties for five years in a row. With its trails, lakes and recreation center, it’s easy to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Even the giant health club chain Life Time Fitness is headquartered in Chanhassen. “Chanhassen offers everything we need for health care. Everything is right around the corner, we both use services in town and like that we don’t have to drive to the heart of Minneapolis to get what we need,” said Chanhassen resident Glenn Kaufmann. The city of Chanhassen notes that it is a “city for life.” This is especially true when planning for the aging process. The Chanhassen Act on Alzheimers ACTion Team has been working to ensure the community is welcoming to those with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. “We are a rapidly aging society, and with that, we need to make sure that communities are prepared and Alzheimer’s is one of the big question marks as far as health,” said Jennifer Anderson, Carver County Public Health program specialist, who oversees the county’s Office of Aging. Anderson has been working with the team to ensure that Chanhassen is an Alzheimer’s friendly community. The work is part of a statewide initiative. “It promotes collective ownership and accountability in preparing Minnesota for the personal, social and budgetary impacts of the disease,” she said.
“Chanhassen offers everything we need for healthcare.” Glenn Kaufmann The team is helping educate the community about Alzheimer’s, and teaching people to be respectful of those living with the disease and their care partners. It also ensures that the community is safe for those living with the disease, Anderson said. For instance, one of the initiatives provides “dementia friend” training, where someone could assist a neighbor with something such as grocery shopping. This allows those with Alzheimer’s or dementia to maintain their home. There is also dementia business training. For instance, using natural lighting and avoiding wild-pattern carpets in shops can help those with dementia. “At the end of it all, Chanhassen will be an Alzheimer’sfriendly community,” Anderson said.

hanhassen is a city of parks, lakes and trails. There are many recreation opportunities throughout the city, such as listening to music at the Summer Concert Series or watching the Chanhassen Red Birds play ball against a neighboring town. How about a round of disc golf at Bandimere Community Park? “It’s totally low-key. No tee times, just grab your buddy and go out there and play,” said Jerry Ruegemer, Chanhassen recreation superintendent. Bandimere’s signature hole is No. 9, where participants throw over a pond. (And neighborhood kids will sometimes hunt down the submerged discs and sell them back to golfers.) There are also several tennis courts and pickleball courts throughout the city. “One thing I want to highlight is we do have watercraft rentals,” Ruegemer said. Lake Ann Park offers canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and rowboats (with or without electric trolling motors). There are three fishing piers in Chanhassen — on Lake Minnewashta at Roundhouse Park, as well as Lake Ann Community Park and Lake Susan Community Park. Take a swim at a number of beaches. Lake Ann Beach has lifeguards during summer months, as does Minnewashta Regional Park, operated by Carver County. There are also beaches, without lifeguards, at Carver Beach on Lotus Lake, Greenwood Shores Beach on Lake Ann and Roundhouse Park

Beach on Lake Minnewashta. Prefer to keep your feet on the ground? Check out the city’s 90 miles of trails. Take in some grand views of the Minnesota River Valley by walking the Minnesota River Bluffs LRT Regional Trail. Throughout the year, the city hosts a number of festivals — including the Fourth of July festival, with a giant downtown parade. There’s also the February Festival on Lake Ann, Memorial Day services, and the Easter Egg Hunt, to name only a few. So, get out and enjoy a life of local leisure.

hen it comes to rankings, Chanhassen is at the top of the charts. The city ranked No. 7 in the nation in Money Magazine’s 2015 “Best Places to Live” list. (That’s the fifth time it’s been in the top 16 since 2005.) But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Over the years, the city has been ranked by various groups as: “Highest Quality of Life in the Twin Cities”; “Top Ten Town to Raise a Family”; Best Place to Live in Minnesota”; second safest city in Minnesota; even “Best Community Festival” ( 4th of July Celebration) — and the list goes on and on. “Chanhassen is a fun, friendly and safe community, which makes it a great place to raise a family,” summed up resident Steve Machacek. During a state of the city address, Mayor Denny Laufenburger presented a long list of statistics from the Metropolitan Council illustrating that the city “is on a path of growth.” Population: Around 26,000 with 9,300 households; population up about 3,000 since the 2010 census. By 2040, expecting 37,000 population with 14,000 households. Jobs: 15,000.

Median household income: $110,000, 28 percent higher than the Carver County average and 60 percent higher than the 13-county metro area. The late rock star Prince lived in Chanhassen longer than most residents — from 1980 until his death in 2016. Paisley Park, his former home and recording studio is now a museum. In a 2001 interview, he spoke of living in Minnesota. “I like it here. I like the neutrality. There’s less stress. ... It’s clear — I can create on a clear space.”
LIVING SCHOOL DISTRICT 112 EASTERN CARVER COUNTY Eastern Carver County Schools is a growing school system serving more than 9,000 students in Carver, Chanhassen, Chaska and Victoria. hanhassen has a vibrant downtown, filled with a mixture of shops and services, everything from small, locally owned shops and services to big-box stores and commercial businesses. Downtown even has an eyelash salon. What is it about Chanhassen that makes businesses want to make their homes here? “It has a lot to do with our demographics,” said Kate Aanenson, Chanhassen community development director. “The number of households, household income, the good access to roads and the visibility of highways 5 and 212. We have a lot of young families, attracted to the good schools.” Vernelle Clayton, a Chanhassen resident and leader of the Buy Chanhassen business group, agreed. “It is our demographics, and that includes disposable income,” Clayton said. “We also have a cohesive downtown. It’s the feeling of being a downtown as much as anything else. We’re not just spread out over busy streets, and confusing exits. You can drive downtown, you can walk downtown. “Over the last couple decades,” Clayton said, “a lot of time and effort went into establishing the look and feel in our downtown.” Aanenson sees that reflected in the recent activity of new restaurants and small businesses filling in the downtown’s

And on the docket, the proposed Avienda development at Lyman and Powers boulevards that provides a retail and housing combination. “The (Chanhassen) City Council is currently working on a downtown development plan,” Aanenson said, “looking at what our strengths and weaknesses are, what people like and what to support. “We just try to do a good job,” Aanenson said, “creating a place people want to be.”
