Chaska maintains a strong, diversified light-industry base. Attracting and preserving high quality jobs is a priority of the city and is consistent with its long-term vision of being a place for residents to both live and work. Despite recent growth, Chaska retains its small town charm. The image of a caring and active community, where people meet and greet each other on the street, continues to be fostered even as the population grows. Established in 1851, Chaska has a core historic downtown that serves as a focal point for both commercial development and social activities. haska is loaded with amenities, but its newest and shiniest is the revamped Firemen’s Park. Located downtown at the highly visible intersection of Highway 41 and County Road 61, Firemen’s Park is a hub of activity — as aptly described by Chaska Parks and Recreation director Tom Redman: “Dads fishing with their kids; preschoolers playing in the splash pad; thousands of ice cream cones and hot dogs served in the concession stand; thousands of visits to the new clayhole swimming beach; and a walk for all ages over the bridge and around the clayhole on the new boardwalk. What more could you want? And it’s free compliments of the city of Chaska!” “Firemen’s Park has been an outstanding improvement to our community!” says resident and former Park Board member Nate Bostrom. “The increased numbers of people recreating in this beautiful downtown Chaska location is phenomenal.” Firemen’s Park is just one of several picturesque parks in the city — including historic Athletic Park near the Minnesota River, sprawling McKnight Park in northern Chaska and the iconic City Square Park with its quintessential small-town gazebo in downtown Chaska. Many of the city’s parks are connected via an impressive 70-plus miles of trails. “Chaska’s trail system (and its connections with region trail systems) is an incredible jewel,” says resident and downtown business owner Dan Keyport. “In the summer months, I routinely run or bike along the levee (trail) downtown and connect to the Minnesota Valley State Trail,” says resident Bryce Ehrman. “Recently I have been

ATTRACTIONS PARKS The city of Chaska has a combination of community playfields, community parks, neighborhood parks and tot lots to serve all of its residents. More than 1,000 acres of public open space exists, of which approximately 600 acres are developed parkland. Request a Chaska parks map by calling the Chaska Parks and Recreation Department at 952-448-3176. The Parks and Trails system development is one of the responsibilities of the Chaska Park Board, which serves in a volunteer advisory capacity to the Chaska City Council. The Park Board meets the second Monday of each month at the Chaska Community Center. The Jonathan Association maintains Lake Grace Park and other open space and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) own or manage areas along the Minnesota River.

CARVER CITY PARKS There are seven Car ver Cit y Parks located throughout the community, including: Bluff Park (three soccer fields, one softball field, covered shelter, picnic tables, restrooms and paved parking); Gazebo Park (downtown gazebo, free library); Community Park (two volleyball courts, ice rink, warming house, softball and baseball fields, covered shelter with picnic tables and restrooms, batting cages, two playgrounds, paved parking lot); Depot Park (covered picnic tables, grills, caboose next to historic railroad water tower); Lions (tennis court, basketball court, park shelter, ballfield, playground equipment, electrical outlets); Overlook Park (scenic view); Riverside Park (boat ramp, archery, primitive campsites, horseshoe pits). ATTRACTIONS REGIONAL PARKS The DNR also manages the Courthouse Lake, located behind the Carver County Courthouse. The Jonathan Association operates Lake Grace Park, off Village Road. The Observatory has several telescopes for public viewing at scheduled events. Additional facilities at Baylor include campgrounds, a beach, fishing pier, playgrounds, restrooms, picnic shelters and trails. Lake Minnewashta Regional Park 6900 Hazeltine Blvd. Chanhassen 952-466-5250 Lake Minnewashta is a 340-acre park with a boat launch, picnic shelters, swimming beach with lifeguards, creative children’s play structure, hiking trails, cross country skiing, volleyball courts, restrooms and fishing pier. Lake Waconia Regional Park 8170 Paradise Lane, east of Waconia 952-466-5250 This park and beach area has a children’s play area, picnic grounds, picnic shelter and restrooms. A large sliding hill, featuring an 80-foot plunge, offers sledding enthusiasts a scenic view of Lake Waconia and Coney Island. There are trails, camping, biking, fishing, children’s playground, Historic Grimm Farm and nature programs. RECREATION The Chaska Parks & Recreation Department provides a variety of leisure programming for eastern Carver County. Hundreds of preschool through senior citizen recreation offerings and special community events are listed in quarterly brochures or by calling 952-448-3176. Chaska Community Center 1661 Park Ridge Dr., Chaska 952448-5633 www.chaskacommunitycenter.com The city of Chaska also operates the Chaska Community Center, which includes a swimming pool, splash pad, gyms, racquetball courts, ice arena, preschool play castle and much more. The center also houses a gallery and theater, advanced fitness equipment and several amenities including an onsite café. Located next to the Community Center is The Lodge, which opened in 2007 to serve Active Older Adults (AOA) ages 55 and older. The Lodge is designed with areas that encourage socializing, and also includes a kitchen, multipurpose room, library/computer kiosk, pool table, an enclosed deck

overlooking the Minnesota River Valley, an outdoor terrace and garden and more.

TRAILS The city of Chaska has more than 40 miles of trails. The trail system is a combination of hard-surfaced off-road walkways and pedestrian friendly ravine-system trails that cover the majority of the community. The municipal trail system is complemented by the Minnesota DNR trail system on the Minnesota River and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife trail, going from Athletic Park in Chaska to the City of Carver. For a cty of Chaska trails map, contact the Chaska Parks and Recreation Department at 952-448-3176. In addition, the Jonathan Association maintains its own trail system. Two nearby abandoned rail lines have been turned into trails, one – the former ChicagoNorthwestern line – starts at the eastern edge of Chaska and continues through Chanhassen to Hopkins. At the Taste of Chaska, area restaurants, breweries and wineries come together in City Square Park to showcase their offerings to hungry and thirsty attendees amid a backdrop of danceable music and — if the weather gods are amenable — a good dose of warm spring sunshine. “Taste of Chaska is absolutely a must-attend,” says Liestman. “I hope to see more local businesses investing in it.” “I always enjoy this event,” offers Bostrom. “It confirms in my mind that summer is here.” During the summer months, Chaska can boast two farmers markets. EASY ACCESS IN THE HEART OF COMMUNITY W

hen it comes to official documents, downtown Chaska is the place to go for everything from driver’s licenses and marriage certificates to dog licenses and, yes, even restraining orders. “Downtown has always been the heart of community,” says Mike Huang, resident and chair of the Chaska Planning Commission. Chaska is the county seat for Carver County and the sprawling Carver County Government Center complex can be found on the eastern side of downtown sandwiched between Beech Street and the Minnesota River. There, one will find among a host of county offices, the jail, courthouse, public health, the county assessor and the Carver County Sheriff’s Office. Chaska operates its own police department. It is located in City Hall in the heart of downtown Chaska between West Fourth and West Fifth streets. City Hall, in addition to housing city offices, is also home to the City Council chambers and the Chaska Library. For those in search of the city’s fire department,

Immediately east of City Hall on West Fourth Street is the Chaska History Center. The Chaska History Center is located in a restored livery stable and features ever-changing exhibits highlighting the area’s rich history. Residents can also access historical photos and artifacts in addition to seeking the expertise of the center’s many knowledgeable volunteers. “Downtown is rich with secrets to learn about Chaska’s past,” says resident Brianna Liestman. One block south of City Hall, on West Third Street, residents can find the Chaska Post Office while directly west of City Hall on Pine Street is the Chaska License Center (and a seemingly ever present line of teenagers anxious to take their driver’s exam). Chaska is also home to Eastern Carver County School District (District 112) headquarters. The school district offices are located on the northern side of the city in the Jonathan Industrial Park on Peavey Road.

FIREMEN’S PARK BECOMES MAJOR DRAW

016 has been a thrilling year for Chaska, maybe one of the most exciting years that we have seen in a while. We have finished up some new projects, while also showcasing ourselves to the world. In early summer, we finished up the first phase of our downtown street reconstruction project. This added new signage, streetscapes, history plaques, cobblestone streets, landscaping, lights and public spaces. Late in 2015, the new Chaska Curling Center, Event Center and Crooked Pint Restaurant opened up on the corner of Highway 41 and County Road 61 next to Firemen’s Park. In a short period of time it has exceeded all expectations, attracting many

During this time, we have hosted a number of curling tournaments, called Bonspiels, and quickly filled all of our leagues with people from throughout the region. It has drawn the attention of current and future Olympians, who call it one of the nicest venues they have seen. This spring brought the opening of all the outdoor additions to Firemen’s Park, including playground equipment, beach, new bridge and boardwalk

around the lake, water activities and (who could forget) the concession stand. It has been great seeing all of the activity — from people playing yard games behind the restaurant, to people sitting in a swing enjoying the view of the lake. Kids have been fishing on the dock and playing in the interactive fountain. The firefighter statue and fire honor columns have also been a big draws and it’s been great to hear from people who see a relative or a friend on the wall of firefighters.

Our Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled many events for kids during the days and concerts in the band shell. In July, the park and adjacent complex hosted the Fire and Ice Bonspiel with activities, food, music and curling for 48 teams from across the country. The entire Firemen’s Park Project has truly met its goal of drawing more people into the downtown and being a destination to get people from around the metro to visit our historic downtown area. We look forward to great things yet to come. Finally, the largest event to hit Chaska was the Ryder Cup, held the last week of September at Hazeltine National Golf Club. The Ryder Cup is the third-largest spectator sport, behind only the Olympics and World Cup Soccer. Some 250,000 people came to Chaska, with over 500 million viewers from across the world watching Chaska and Hazeltine. As you can see there is lot of fun and exciting things happening Chaska. Hope to see you as we all continue striving to make Chaska “The Best Small Town in Minnesota.

WINTER PARKING

NOISE/ODOR ORDINANCE

Chaska follows a calendar parking schedule for on-street parking during the winter. The ordinance applies to all public parking–streets, alleys, parking lots. From Nov. 1 to April 1, whenever 2 inches of snow accumulates to require plowing, vehicles must park on the evennumbered side of the street on even-numbered days of the month; and on the odd-numbered side of the street on odd-numbered days.

There is a noise ordinance prohibiting loud, unnecessary or unusual noises that annoy, disturb, injure or endanger the comfort, repose, health, peace, safety or welfare of others. The ordinance also prohibits offensive odors. ALARM SYSTEMS When alarm systems are installed, certain requirements must be met. No alarm systems, except

those for financial institutions and public buildings, may be connected directly to the county public safety communications center. Neither may a system have an automatic dialer that dials directly into the center. To assure both proper installation and maintenance, there is a penalty fee for false alarms. SUMMER LAWN WATERING The city of Chaska has an ordinance regarding water usage effective May 1-Sept. 30. Compliance is based on an odd-even cycle of watering. You are required to limit your lawn sprinkling and other

non-essential water use based on your address and the calendar day of the month. Even-numbered addresses water on even numbered calendar days; odd-numbered addresses sprinkle on odd numbered days. Compliance with this ordinance is mandatory. Failure to comply may result in fines and/or termination of water service. New seed or sod is exempt from the ordinance until it becomes established. Commercial, industrial and residential automated irrigation systems are required to follow the same guidelines.

WINTER PARKING The City of Carver prohibits parking of any vehicle or other object on public streets or alleys when two or more inches of snow have accumulated, whether the accumulation is due to new snowfall or drifting and blowing. Once the streets are cleared, parking may resume. LAWN WATERING Homes or businesses with addresses ending in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, etc.) may water the lawn on odd-numbered calendar days; addresses ending in even numbers (0, 2, 4, etc.) may water on even-numbered calendar days. The odd-even schedule is in effect year-round. No lawn watering is permitted between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. A 30-day permit to water newly seeded or sodded lawns is available at City Hall. CITY PARK USE/VEHICLES IN CITY PARKS City parks are closed and must be vacated between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., unless the user has a prior written permit from the city of Carver authorizing use during that time. No motor vehicle — other than maintenance vehicles operated by the city of Carver personnel or contractors working on its behalf — may be operated in any city park. RECREATIONAL FIRES Recreational fires (used for recreational, ceremonial, food preparation or social purposes) are allowed if they burn no more than three feet in diameter and three feet in height; use dry, clean wood; produce little detectable smoke, odor or soot beyond the property line; be extinguished completely; and respect and air quality so that nuisance, health or safety hazards will not be created. Recreational fires shall not be located closer than 25 feet to any structure. SNOWMOBILES No person shall operated a snowmobile upon any public street, alley, lot, lake or stream within the city between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. There are exceptions to this ordinance — call City Hall for details.

If these options are not available to you, please contact the county for collection information. Sellers of automotive products may take used automotive waste, perhaps for a fee. hen it comes to general health care, Chaska has got its residents covered. The city is home to a 24-hour emergency/urgent care facility as well as a host of primary and specialty medical clinics. Ridgeview’s Two Twelve Medical Center is located at the intersection of highways 212 and 41 and features a stand-alone emergency room with round-the-clock urgent care services. The relatively new facility also houses practices covering everything from women’s and children’s health to same-day surgery to mental health counseling services. “Our community seems to have generally kept pace with the evolving health needs of a growing population,” says resident Nate Bostrom. “The addition of both the Two-Twelve Medical facility and the (Marie Steiner Kelting Hospice Home) near the Chaska/Victoria border, over the last decade, address important needs in a dynamic community.” Just up Highway 41, at the intersection with Pioneer Trail, the relocated and revamped Lakeview Clinic provides options for family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics as well as OB/GYN and general surgeons. It also features x-ray facilities and clinical laboratory. Chaska is just minutes away from hospitals in both Waconia and Shakopee for conditions requiring more advanced care. “We are fortunate to have Ridgeview, St. Francis and Al-

Several senior facilities are also based in Chaska, offering options for nursing care including assisted living and memory care. In addition, Chaska is home to a number of addiction specialists treating patients for drug and alcohol issues. For the un-insured or underinsured, Carver County Public Health offers free or low-cost health care and regular immunization clinics. Food and nutrition services for qualified low-income clients are also available through the CAP agency serving Carver and Scott counties. “Meeting these important human needs is not an option for a city that wants to be a healthy community for all residents,” says Bostrom, who also serves as vice-chair for the CAP Board of Directors.

un is the name of the game in Chaska and residents know there are plenty of options within the city’s borders to keep them busy. Golfers can hit the links at one of three course in town. The city operates two municipal courses — the 18-hole Chaska Town Course and the 9-hole executive course called the Par 30. Both city courses are located in northern Chaska. The Chaska Town Course is near Lake Bavaria and can be accessed via Pioneer Trail. The Par 30 (which also features footgolf) is located east of Highway 41 on Hazeltine Boulevard. And just a bit farther east on Hazeltine Boulevard is Hazeltine National Golf Club. The private course, which has been home numerous national golf tournaments in its 55-year history, is fresh off hosting the 2016 Ryder Cup. “Chaska is fortunate to have one of the best public golf courses in the state (Chaska Town Course) as well as the worldrenowned Hazeltine National Golf Club,” says resident and downtown business owner Dan Keyport. Pride in the city’s sports venues also extends to both its brand new curling facility and its historic ballpark. “We have one of the most picturesque baseball fields in all of Minnesota,” says resident Bryce Ehrman. Athletic Park, located on West First Street on the far western reaches of downtown Chaska, is an ideal venue for catching a Chaska Cubs game on a summer evening. “There is just something magical about watching town ball that you can’t get by visiting a major league stadium,” says Ehrman. The Chaska Curling Center is only a year old (it officially opened at the end of 2015) but it has already proven its ability to draw a crowd. The year-round center features six lanes and has already hosted numerous bonspiels. Curling memberships

For those who prefer music, summer nights sing with concerts in the park. Both the newly revamped Firemen’s Park and City Square Park feature regular concerts with a variety of musical acts. “Good music, great atmosphere and root beer floats from the Moravian church next door — what more could you ask for?” says Ehrman.

rianna Liestman has fallen in love with Chaska. And many of the reasons she loves the city are reasons so many people are proud to call Chaska home. “I moved to Chaska five years ago after graduating from college because the rent was cheap and my (now) husband had a job here,” she explains. “When it came time to decide to buy a house, even though I worked far away, I wanted it to be in Chaska. I’m willing to drive any distance if Chaska is where I come home to at the end of the day. “I’ve lived in suburbs but Chaska is different,” Liestman continues. “There is a strong sense of community, despite the fact that the city continues to grow, and the diverse group of people here are alike in their friendliness and respect. “The schools invest in their kids and the citizens do as well, and any kids I may have someday will be truly privileged to attend our public school system. When the city has problems, it fixes them. When the citizens are concerned, they raise their voices and their leaders listen to them. In the end, that

For resident Bryce Ehrman, it’s the people that make Chaska great. “There are so many caring and compassionate individuals that give back to our community and make it such a great and safe place to raise a family,” he says. “We are fortunate to have several churches engaging in cooperative efforts such as Love INC and Families Moving Forward along with several active service organizations who help those in need. “For those looking for a way to give back to their community, I would highly encourage looking into one of the local service organizations,” Ehrman continues. “Whether it be the Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, American Legion or VFW Auxiliary programs, each organization is looking for new members to bring their ideas and experience to their groups.”

rom its inception in 1980, the Chaska Historical Society has been busy collecting, preserving, protecting, recording and sharing the rich heritage of the Chaska community. A quick overview of the city’s recorded history begins with the Minnesota River (originally known as the St. Peter River), which gave early travelers an easier means to get to “Chaska,” a Dakota word meaning “firstborn son.” Steamboats traveled through here regularly during the 1850s through 1870s. It was because of this area’s connection to the river that the city of Chaska was platted in 1851. Around 1860, residents began mining valuable deposits of clay left over from glacial days to produce

high-quality, cream-colored brick. This led to the city’s first major industry of brick making. Soon, people needed machines to make the brick, transportation to move the brick, and farms to feed the workers. With railroads coming through in 1871, soon the city was buzzing with activity. The city became home to as many as eight brickyards, as well as a foundry making equipment for the brickyards and agriculture. Many other businesses, places of worship and clubs also met the needs of the growing community. In 1905, agriculture got a boost with the opening of a sugar factory, adding well-paying jobs requiring higher education to the collection of mills, breweries, creamery, cannery, Gedney pickle

LIVING factory, butchers, bakeries, and other food-producers. By 1910, Chaska was the third largest producer of brick in the state, producing 40 million bricks per year. The foundry continued to produce brickmaking equipment, sleighs, and ironwork lampposts and fences. The sugar factory encouraged the raising of sugar beets in the area and required the railroads to ship in carload after carload of beets for processing around-the-clock during the “campaign,” a term referring to peak harvesting time. With the brickyard, foundry, and sugar factory, Chaska had a strong base for its other businesses, including furniture and clothing stores, farm implement dealers, hardware stores, drugstores, grocers, and banks. In addition to its industry and business interests, Chaska was a political and cultural center. The county seat since its inception in 1858, Chaska has had the courthouse and jail, first on West Third Street, from 1857 to 1965, and at its present location at East Fourth Street since 1965. Though schools had previously been in Chaska for many years, Chaska Public School’s first accredited graduating class of six students was in 1906.

ENTERTAINMENT Entertainment over the years could be found at the opera house, the Schnitzelbank Club, the Happ Auditorium, the Rex movie theater, the Valley Ballroom, bowling alleys, and the Legion and VFW. Music, often provided by local bands and choirs, was well-received, with the Sodality Band, the Chaska Brass Band, and the Drum and Bugle Corps some of the wellknown earlier groups. One by one the earliest industries petered out, with the brick industry ending its dominance by the 1940s. The foundry and sugar factory continued until the early 1970s, moving out when pollution controls required reasonable but expensive changes. The sugar factory ended its sugar

Today’s industries began as these long-time industries faded. The annexation of the Hazeltine golf course area and agricultural land led to northern Chaska becoming desirable for development. State Sen. Henry T. McKnight chose much of this area for his “New Town” idea known as “Jonathan.” Incorporating green space, walking paths and

other amenities, the Jonathan comprehensive plan included industrial parks to encourage employment within the community. With Jonathan Industrial Park and Crosby Park, new high-tech business sectors began in the early 1970s. Today Chaska is associated with some of those original industries, as well as with biomedical research and development, the semiconductor industry, manufacturing, and data storage.

haska has a bustling business community with a variety of commercial and industrial spaces providing more than 13,000 jobs in the city and plenty of shopping options for residents. “Our thriving business community offers a diverse base of advanced manufacturing, industrial companies, non-profits, retail shopping, restaurants and entertainment,” says Jeff Filipek, president and CEO of the SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce. “We have easy access shopping areas while our downtown welcomes visitors with a unique charm.” Chaska has two main commercial sectors — the Chaska Commons on the northern edge of the city and the downtown corridor around Highway 41 just north of the Minnesota River. I am a Minnesota boy who grew up on the north side of Minneapolis and graduated from the University of Minnesota. I have also worked for other chambers and nonprofits in Albert Lea, Willmar, and most recently Pierre, S.D. When considering a career change and moving back to Minnesota it was important for me to find the right community. The SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce covers the cities of Carver, Chanhassen, Chaska and Victoria. I couldn’t have picked a greater place to live, work, shop and play! HAPPY PLACE Carver County moved up a notch in the “Happiest Places in America” ranking to claim the No. 3 spot this year according to a study done by Smart Asset. The data firm analyzed metrics related to family stability, physical health, personal financial health and economic security for counties

that have a population greater than 50,000. As the study notes, “given the high quality of life we experience, it’s not surprising the county’s population increased by more than 8 percent between 2010 and 2015.” Earlier this year, Carver County was ranked the healthiest county in the state, and this study confirms the positive factors that go with living here. et lovers will find Chaska to be an exceptionally pet-friendly town with numerous pet-geared amenities and services. Chaska has several veterinary clinics scattered throughout the city and quick access to area animal hospitals. Trails abound throughout the city to make sure Rex and Spot get plenty of fresh air and exercise. “The city of Chaska was fortunate early on in the 1970s to have a world class trail system started as part of the new town Jonathan,” explains Tom Redman, Chaska Parks and Recreation director. “Since that time, the city of Chaska has built pedestrian trails on the Chaska East Creek as well as in most new residential developments.” Northern Chaska is home to several horse farms and trails while horses are also welcome on the Minnesota Valley State Trail running parallel to the Minnesota River south of Chaska. Chaska has numerous options for grooming and pampering pets with a host of groomers and a selection of pet spas in the city. Chaska also features boarding facilities for all kinds of animals. Obedience classes and training are offered by several providers including the Carver-Scott Humane Society at its new location on Chestnut Street in downtown Chaska. The Carver-Scott Humane Society has been working for more than 25 years to find homes for its animals. Despite lacking a shelter, the humane society works with volunteers and foster families to give pets a loving home while they are in

The new location has given the non-profit organization the ability to house a small group of cats on-site for adoption as well as host adoption days for dogs on a monthly basis. Like the Carver-Scott Humane Society, the Southwest Metro Animal Rescue is a foster-based organization committed to the rescue of abandoned, abused and stray domestic animals. The group has monthly Pet Adoption Days for its animals and advertises available pets in the Chaska Herald on a weekly basis. For those looking for a furry feline companion, Valuecare Veterinary Clinic houses a cat adoption center with many cats available. Visitors are also encouraged to volunteer their time to help socialize the cats before adoption.

PETS PET INFORMATION PET LICENSES The city of Chanhassen does not require pet licenses, but both cats and dogs are required to have some identification on them that would assist animal control in contacting the owner. Types of identification include microchips, veterinarianissued rabies tags, or any tags or collars with contact information and phone numbers inscribed on them. RABIES VACCINATIONS All dogs and cats over six months of age and kept as a pet are required to be vaccinated against rabies. KENNEL PERMIT Any household with more than two two dogs, more than three cats or any combination of four or more dogs or cats over six months of age is required to obtain a private kennel permit.

CARVER-SCOTT HUMANE SOCIETY The Carver-Scott Humane Society serves Carver and Scott counties as well as a portion of Hennepin County. The organization has a location in downtown Chaska but the majority of all abandoned pets are housed in foster care until permanent adoption. The humane society frequently hosts pet adoption days.
