Chaska’s employment opportunities, education system, diverse population and strong sense of community have helped earn the community the designation of one of the best small towns in the United States. Chaska maintains a strong, diversified light-industry base. Attracting and preserving high quality jobs is a priority of the city and is consistent with its long-term vision of being a place for residents to both live and work. Established in 1851, Chaska has a core historic downtown that serves as a focal point for both commercial development and social activities. Those who live in Chaska continue to enjoy ice cream socials and band concerts in City Square Park. These and other activities are designed to strengthen the community and support shared community values. Outdoor recreation enthusiasts enjoy the community’s trail system, expansive parks, two swimming beaches and a disc golf course. Chaska also has an extensive year-round recreation program for children and adults, including seniors. Chaska is also home to a new curling center as well as Hazeltine National Golf Club, site of several major golfing tournaments for men, women and seniors, including the 2016 Ryder Cup.

ENJOY THE 70 MILES OF TRAILS IN CHASKA W
hen it comes to having fun close to home, Chaska has you covered. Whether it’s running or biking through the 70-plus miles of trails, taking in the beauty of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, or catching a ball game at Athletic Park, Chaska is home to many amenities. “Chaska has a strong parks and trails system. Among the best one can find, plus it provides gathering opportunities for a variety of programs for all ages!” former Chaska mayor Bob Roepke said. “City Square, Athletic Park and now Firemen’s Park all provide high quality opportunities for the community to come together, build and enjoy the community spirit that is Chaska!” Revamped Firemen’s Park, near the intersection of Highway 41 and County Road 61, is at the center of fun. From the popular Clayhole swim beach and concessions to a stroll across the boardwalk and throughout the park, there is something to do for all ages. A new water fountain area for younger children is a huge hit on warm days. Make sure to stop down on Wednesdays between June and August for a concert series. There is also summer kid entertainment Tuesday morning in the park. Paddleboat and paddleboard rentals are available.
Inside the new event center is the Chaska Curling Center. It has the largest curling membership in the nation, with more than 1,300 participants, as well as bonspiels, corporate, junior and learn to curl events. Just west of downtown is famed Athletic Park, one of the most recognizable baseball stadiums in the state of Minnesota. Chaska is host to the Class A State High School League State Tournament each June as well as the Play Ball MN! All-Star Series as well. The Chaska Cubs, a Class B amateur baseball team within the Minnesota Baseball Association, calls Athletic Park home between May and August. Cubs games are a staple among the local faithful as families show up regularly to take in nine innings, enjoy a hot dog and beverage and cheer on the team. Experience Lenzen Night in late July for the full Cubs experience. Also in downtown is City Square Park with its small-town gazebo, home to concerts, Taste of Chaska and many events during River City Days in July. “What makes Chaska a special place is that it has a strong value on and priority for being a community for all. And in that community you have the opportunity to live, work, shop and play, all within Chaska,” Roepke added.

CHASKA PARKS The city of Chaska has a combination of community playfields, community parks, neighborhood parks and tot lots to serve all of its residents. More than 1,000 acres of public open space exists, of which approximately 600 acres are developed parkland. The Parks and Trails system development is one of the responsibilities of the Chaska Park Board, which serves in a volunteer advisory capacity to the Chaska City Council. The Park Board meets the second Monday of each month at the Chaska Community Center.

There are seven Carver City Parks located throughout the community, including: Bluff Park (three soccer fields, one softball field, covered shelter, picnic tables, restrooms and paved parking); Gazebo Park (downtown gazebo, free library); Community Park (two volleyball courts, ice
rink, warming house, softball and baseball fields, covered shelter with picnic tables and restrooms, batting cages, two playgrounds, paved parking lot); Depot Park (covered picnic tables, grills, caboose next to historic railroad water tower); Lions (tennis court, basketball court, park shelter, ballfield, playground equipment, electrical outlets); Overlook Park (scenic view); Riverside Park (boat ramp, archery, primitive campsites, horseshoe pits); and Ironwood Park, being constructed as this issue went to press, next to the new Carver Elementary School. REGIONAL PARKS The DNR also manages the Courthouse Lake, located behind the Carver County Courthouse. The Jonathan Association operates Lake Grace Park, off Village Road. The Observatory has several telescopes for public viewing at scheduled events. Additional facilities at Baylor include campgrounds, a beach, fishing pier, playgrounds, restrooms, picnic shelters and trails. Walk, hike, cross-country ski more than eight miles of trails. Open 363 days a year.
TRAILS The city of Chaska has more than 40 miles of trails. The trail system is a combination of hard-surfaced off-road walkways and pedestrian friendly ravine-system trails that cover the majority of the community. The municipal trail system is complemented by the Minnesota DNR trail system on the Minnesota
River and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife trail, going from Athletic Park in Chaska to the City of Carver. For a cty of Chaska trails map, contact the Chaska Parks and Recreation Department at 952-448-3176. In addition, the Jonathan Association maintains its own trail system. Two nearby abandoned rail lines have been turned into trails, one – the former Chicago-Northwestern line – starts at the eastern edge of Chaska and continues through Chanhassen to Hopkins. A similar line starts in Victoria and ends in Hopkins.
RECREATION The Chaska Parks & Recreation Department provides a variety of leisure programming for eastern Carver County. Hundreds of preschool through senior citizen recreation offerings and special community events are listed in quarterly brochures or by calling 952-448-3176. Chaska Community Center 1661 Park Ridge Dr., Chaska 952448-5633 www.chaskacommunitycenter.com The city of Chaska also operates the Chaska Community Center, which includes a swimming pool, splash pad, gyms, racquetball courts, ice arena, preschool play castle and much more. The center also houses a gallery and theater, advanced fitness equipment and several amenities including an on-site café. Located next to the Community Center is The Lodge, which opened in 2007 to serve Active Older Adults (AOA) ages 55 and older. The Lodge is designed with areas that encourage socializing, and also includes a kitchen, multi-purpose room, library/computer kiosk, pool table, an enclosed deck overlooking the Minnesota River Valley, an outdoor terrace and garden and more.

FESTIVALS Chaska River City Days on the last weekend of July is an annual summer community celebration of life along the Minnesota River. The entire River City Days weekend is supported and sponsored by dozens of organizations in the community who are dedicated to bringing all the wonderful sights, sounds and tastes of the annual celebration. Steamboat Days on the second weekend of September is the annual community celebration for Carver, with food, music, burn-out contest and large parade.

TASTE THE HOMEMADE GOODNESS F
rom burgers and fries to pizza and pasta to authentic tacos from a food truck, there are plenty of reasons for residents to keep their dining dollars in Chaska. Most Chaska restaurants are in downtown or in the Chaska Commons area near Highway 41 and Pioneer Trail. A mix of chain and independently owned establishments give consumers options to choose from. Each May, the city celebrates the variety of food options with the SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Taste of Chaska. Area restaurants, breweries and wineries come together in City Square Park to showcase their offerings. It is a huge hit for all ages. “The 2017 Taste of Chaska brought out 54 business vendors on a beautiful spring evening. Around 20 were food vendors mostly from Chaska and the Southwest Metro area. Several local wineries and craft beer vendors were featured in a tasting tent. The event also included live music from Chaska’s own SoundCheck music school. The young families enjoyed the kids zone and bouncy houses,” SouthWest Metro Chamber Events Manager Kelly Darcourt said. “It was estimated that well over 1,000 people attended. We hope to have even more local restaurants and food trucks participate next year.” During the summer months, Chaska features two farmers markets. They are a great place to find fresh fruits, vegetables and other foods the whole family will enjoy.

On Wednesday mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Chaska Farmers Market is held at the Carver County Government Center. On Wednesday afternoons from 3 to 7 p.m., the SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce hosts the Chaska Downtown Farmers Market in City Square Park. Handmade goodies, flowers and a variety of produce are available for purchase. Over 20 full-season and 15 part-time vendors were signed up earlier this year. “We have added a couple new elements to the farmers market this year,” said Chamber President Jeff Filipek. “In partnership with Carver County Health, youth ages 4-12 can check in at our chamber table and get a $2 token for free produce.” He added that “some evenings will have special activities like Yoga in the Park, Kids Bouncy House and more.” The Downtown Chaska Farmers Market Facebook page is a great way to see what is happening each week. “These events help draw new people into downtown Chaska and they get exposed to our business community” said Filipek.

IT’S THAT EASY W
hen it comes to the city’s government center, city employees try to make everything as easy as possible. “We talk a lot about being the best small town in Minnesota and what that means. A big part of that is city government,” said Assistant City Administrator Nate Kabat. “We want to make sure that when people are interacting with the government, that they’ll be heard and they’ll be responded to.” Chaska is the county seat for Carver County and the sprawling Carver County Government Center complex can be found on the eastern side of downtown between Beech Street and the Minnesota River. There are many county offices there including the jail, courthouse, public health, the county assessor and the Carver County Sheriff’s Office. Chaska operates its own police department, which is located in City Hall in the heart of downtown Chaska between West Fourth and West Fifth streets. The building has city offices, City Council chambers and the Chaska Library. The Chaska Fire Station is located on Engler Boulevard, west of Highway 41. To the east of City Hall, on West Fourth Street, is the Chaska History Center, which is located in a restored livery stable and features ever-changing exhibits highlighting the area’s rich history. Residents can also access historical photos and artifacts in addition to seeking the expertise of the center’s many knowledgeable volunteers. On West Third Street, residents can find the Chaska Post Office. “I would say that here at City Hall we strive to be a very approachable place for residents to be coming in,” Kabat said.

CITY ORDINANCES Following are some of the more commonly asked questions regarding city of Carver ordinances. For more information or a full list of ordinances, call the city of Carver at 952-448-5353 or visit www. cityofcarver.com. WINTER PARKING The city of Carver prohibits parking of any vehicle or other object on public streets or alleys when 2 or more inches of snow have accumulated, whether the accumulation is due to new snowfall or drifting and blowing. Once the streets are cleared, parking may resume. LAWN WATERING Homes or businesses with addresses ending in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, etc.) may water the lawn on odd-numbered calendar days; addresses ending in even numbers (0, 2, 4, etc.) may water on even-numbered calendar days. The odd-even schedule is in effect year-round. No lawn watering is permitted between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. A 30-day permit to water newly seeded or sodded lawns is available at City Hall. CITY PARK USE/VEHICLES IN CITY PARKS City parks are closed and must be vacated between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., unless the user has a prior written permit from the city of Carver authorizing use during that time. No motor vehicle — other than maintenance vehicles operated by the city of Carver personnel or contractors working on its behalf — may be operated in any city park. RECREATIONAL FIRES Recreational fires (used for recreational, ceremonial, food preparation or social purposes) are allowed if they burn no more than three feet in diameter and three feet in height; use dry, clean wood; produce little detectable smoke, odor or soot beyond the property line; be extinguished completely; and respect and air quality so that nuisance, health or safety hazards will not be created. Recreational fires shall not be located closer than 25 feet to any structure. SNOWMOBILES No person shall operated a snowmobile upon any public street, alley, lot, lake or stream within the city between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. There are exceptions to this ordinance — call City Hall for details. SNOWBOUND RESTRICTIONS/SNOWBOUND VEHICLES It is unlawful to park any vehicle or other object on public streets or alleys any time 2 inches or more of snow has accumulated (whether due to new snow or drifting/blowing of snow. Due to the limited number of available parking spaces on 3rd Street, “No Parking” restrictions are enforced from 5 to 10 a.m. when 2 inches or more of snow has accumulated. No person shall park his or her vehicle or allow a vehicle he/she owns and operates to be parked upon any street or alley within the city when such vehicle is in snowbound condition. A snowbound vehicle is defined as a vehicle that has been standing on a street or alleyway for at least 48 hours, and either has not been moved or cannot be moved due to the accumulation of ice and snow on or around the vehicle. 2017 - 2018 | chaskaherald.com

CHASKA CITY COUNCIL The mayor and four council members serve as the Chaska City Council. The position of mayor is elected at large (citywide) every two years. Council members are elected to four-year terms, with two seats up each election. Chaska has a ward form of government, therefore each council member is elected by the voters in his or her ward. ROAD TO REPAIRS: CITY IS FIXING UP STREETS T
his is another busy year in Chaska, as we continue to strive to be “The Best Small Town in Minnesota!” Our 10-year street reconstruction plan in downtown Chaska continued this summer, as we move forward towards our goal of rebuilding all streets and utilities throughout our entire downtown area, something that has been desperately needed for several years. In 2017, we are focusing on the reconstruction of Second Street, stretching one block on each side of Highway 41 between Hickory and Pine streets. This stretch of road is the heart of our historic downtown commercial district, making this an especially challenging project year. On the street, all utilities and sidewalks will be replaced, and streetscape, including a cobblestone street will be constructed. We thank each and every business for their patience and hope our residents continue to patronize them during construction. In addition to Second Street, another large construction project in downtown will be the reconstruction of County Road 61 from Highway 41 to Hickory Street. This project will include the replacement of the bridge over the West Chaska Creek diversion channel that has been

partially closed for the past three years, and will include our downtown streetscape and safety upgrades to help pedestrians crossing Highway 61 to get to Firemen’s Park and the Curling and Event Center. Besides roads being under construction, we are also planning for a future transportation project which will bring significant improvements to Highway 41 in the central part of our community. We are currently finalizing plans for the widening of Highway 41 between Highway 212 and Pioneer Trail, making it a four-lane section. Significant improvements will be made on Hundertmark Road at its intersection with Highway 41, to deal with issues we see during peak traffic times. This project is slated to occur during the summer of 2018, bringing some much needed congestion relief to this are of the city.
We are also in the early planning stages for the rebuild of Highway 41 through our downtown area, which is slated to occur in 2022. This project will not only help with congestion, but also make our historic downtown commercial district much more pedestrian friendly. While all of these projects create short-term inconveniences, we are confident they will create long-term benefits for residents and businesses in the community. All of the details of these projects can be found on the city of Chaska website if you have any questions. In addition to road projects, we also continue to work on revitalizing our downtown commercial district. After completing two other catalyst redevelopment projects in downtown, including Firemen’s Park and The Landing at First Street and Highway 41, we continue to move forward with our next catalyst project. The next project is called City Square West and is located on the entire block just west of City Square Park. Our initial plans show it being a new 30,000-square-foot library, housing and retail area and will include KleinBank, the U.S. Post Office and a parking structure. We will have a citizen task force to develop
final plans for the site and move forward with getting this project started. Firemen’s Park, along with the Curling and Event Center continue to be a very busy place. We feel this project is doing what we had hoped it would do, which is to generate traffic and bring people into the downtown area on a regular basis. We hope to continue with redevelopment of sites surrounding Firemen’s Park, which have had a renewed interest shown in them by developers since the completion of the Firemen’s Park project. We hope to have more to share in the near future! Housing in our new development area of southwest Chaska is going at a fast past, with over 200 homes being built in 2016. Another 50-lot development was approved by the Chaska City Council last winter, hopefully this momentum will keep up moving forward. Hy-Vee grocery store, an office and medical building and U.S. Bank’s new data center were also approved. Construction on some has already started. This development area will continue to take a step forward this summer with the construction of new collector roads and the installation of new utilities. Thank you to all of you.

WINTER PARKING Chaska follows a calendar parking schedule for on-street parking during the winter. The ordinance applies to all public parking–streets, alleys, parking lots. From Nov. 1 to April 1, whenever 2 inches of snow accumulates to require plowing, vehicles must park on the evennumbered side of the street on
even-numbered days of the month; and on the odd-numbered side of the street on odd-numbered days. For residents’ convenience, the city counts the day as beginning at 8 a.m. NOISE/ODOR ORDINANCE There is a noise ordinance prohibiting loud, unnecessary or unusual noises that annoy, disturb, injure or endanger the comfort, repose, health, peace, safety or welfare of others. The ordinance
also prohibits offensive odors. SUMMER LAWN WATERING The city of Chaska has an ordinance regarding water usage effective May 1-Sept. 30. Compliance is based on an odd-even cycle of watering. You are required to limit your lawn sprinkling and other non-essential water use based on your address and the calendar day of the month. Even-numbered addresses water on even numbered calendar days; odd-numbered ad-
dresses sprinkle on odd numbered days. Compliance with this ordinance is mandatory. Failure to comply may result in fines and/or termination of water service. New seed or sod is exempt from the ordinance until it becomes established. HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE Household hazardous waste must be disposed of properly to avoid endangering health and contaminating ground water. These wastes include: solvents, household cleaners, pesticides, paint, wood preservatives, aerosols, batteries, automotive oil and antifreeze. The best way to handle the waste – except those that are banned – is to use it or give it to someone who will. If these options are not available to you, please contact the county for collection information. Sellers of automotive products may take used automotive waste, perhaps for a fee. Check before bringing the waste in. The county also schedules periodic hazardous waste collection programs.

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO LIVED IN CHASKA BY LISA OBERSKI

F
rom its inception in 1980, the Chaska Historical Society has been busy collecting, preserving, protecting, recording and sharing the rich heritage of the Chaska community. Chaska’s history was shaped by the Glacial River Warren after the last Ice Age, leaving rich farmland, numerous clay deposits and downward slopes to the banks of today’s Minnesota River. The developments of the last 165-plus years can be easily seen in a tour of the community. We begin at the southern border of the city, the Minnesota River. Originally named the St. Peter River, it was a vital means of transportation in the untamed wilderness. Used both by the Native Americans living here in the 1700s to mid-1800s and the European and eastern U.S. settlers moving into the area in the 1850s, it remained the primary connection to the rest of the world until the arrival of the railroad in the early 1870s. The word “Chaska” means “firstborn son”— hearkening back to our Dakota beginnings. Recorded history begins with the founding of the city in 1851, after the Treaty of 1851 opened the area to settlers. The initial plat of the city included City Square Park, located between Third and Fourth streets in downtown Chaska. Within this park three Native American burial mounds are located. The development of the city can be seen as one travels north from the river. Second Street, lined with cream-colored brick buildings, recalls the heyday of Chaska brick making. Chaska brick making began in 1857 and expanded to eventually include eight to 10 brickyards. Chaska was the third largest brick making community in the state in 1910, churning out more than 40 million bricks per year. Along with the brick making came shopkeepers, barrel makers, livery stables, hotels, saloons, brick making equipment, a newspaper, bankers, and brewers. People shared their talents for entertainment— band and choral music, drama and

The first three religious communities in downtown Chaska were established by 1885: The Moravian Church, Guardian Angels Catholic Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church. The turn of the century agribusiness developments could be seen northeast along Stoughton Avenue—the most notable being the Sugar Factory, constructed in 1905 of Chaska brick and operating as a sugar beet processor until the early 1970s and storage facility after that. Also Gedney Pickles, which originally was in the Beech Street/Sixth Street area. Besides these, there were the mills, a canning factory,

farm equipment dealers and feed stores in other parts of downtown. In addition to its industry and business interests, Chaska was a political and cultural center. The seat of Carver County government since its inception in 1858, Chaska has had the courthouse and jail, first on West Third Street from 1857 to 1965 and at its present location at East Fourth Street since 1965. Though schools had been in existence in Chaska for many years, the Chaska Public School’s first accredited graduating class of six students was in 1906. As times changed, one by one the earliest industries petered out, with the brick industry ending its
dominance by the 1940s, though some brickyards continued on and off on a much smaller scale until around 1960. Natural springs filled the three clayholes in downtown Chaska and are leftovers from this industry. The foundry continued until the early 1970s, moving out when pollution controls required reasonable but expensive changes. Today’s industries began further north in Chaska as these long-time industries faded. The annexation of the Hazeltine National Golf Club area and the agricultural land north of Chaska led to this area becoming desirable for development. State Senator Henry T. McKnight chose much of this area for his “new town” idea known as “Jonathan.” Incorporating green space, walking paths and other amenities, the Jonathan comprehensive plan included industrial parks to encourage employment within the community. With Jonathan Industrial Park and Crosby Park, new, high-tech sectors were initiated in northern Chaska in the early 1970s. Today Chaska is associated with some of those original industries as well as with biomedical research and development, the semiconductor industry, manufacturing, and data storage. The population of Chaska was around 2,000 from about 1860 to 1960. With the addition of the Hazeltine development followed by Jonathan, the population doubled every ten years, reaching 8,346 in 1980. The continued growth in the eighties and nineties brought the population to over 17,000 in 2000. Today the population is over 25,000. Lisa Oberski is president of the Chaska Historical Society.

hen it comes to general health care, Chaska has its residents covered. The city is home to a 24-hour emergency and urgent care facility as well as a host of primary and specialty medical clinics. Ridgeview’s Two Twelve Medical Center is at the intersection of highways 212 and 41 and features a stand-alone emergency room with round-the-clock urgent care services. The facility also houses practices covering everything from women’s and children’s health to same-day surgery to mental health counseling services. “Our community seems to have generally kept pace with the evolving health needs of a growing population,” said resident Nate Bostrom. Just up Highway 41, at the intersection with Pioneer Trail, the relocated and revamped Lakeview Clinic provides options for family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics as well as OB/GYN and general surgeons. It also features X-ray facilities and clinical laboratory. Several senior facilities are also based in Chaska, offering options for nursing care including assisted living and memory care. In addition, Chaska is home to a number of addiction specialists treating patients for drug and alcohol issues. For the uninsured or underinsured, Carver County Public Health offers free or low-cost health care and regular immunization clinics. Food and nutrition services for qualified low-income clients are also available through the CAP agency serving Carver and Scott counties. “Meeting these important human needs is not an option for a city that wants to be a healthy community for all residents,” said Bostrom, who also serves on the CAP Board of Directors.

Home to some of the state’s best golf courses, grab the clubs and hit the links this season. “Little Leaguers look up to and admire Major League players in baseball, and it’s no different in golf. We encourage folks to play golf together, watch golf together and root for your favorite golfers together,” said Jeff May, golf operations manager for Three Rivers Park District. Golfers can hit the links at one of four courses in town. The city operates two municipal courses — the 18-hole Chaska Town Course and the 9-hole executive course called the Par 30. Both city courses are in northern Chaska. The Chaska Town Course is near Lake Bavaria and can be accessed via Pioneer Trail. The Par 30 is located east of Highway 41 on Hazeltine Boulevard. And just a bit farther east on Hazeltine Boulevard is Hazeltine National Golf Club. The private course, which has been home numerous national golf tournaments in its 55-year history, is fresh off hosting the 2016 Ryder Cup. Dahlgreen Golf Course west of the city in Dahlgreen Township is set in the rolling hills of Carver County. Bluff Creek Golf Course near Highway 101 is surrounded by woodlands and bluffs. Want something a little different? How about footgolf? Footgolf, a cross between soccer and golf, is a new game being introduced at the city of Chaska course. A soccer ball and participant’s kicking foot replace a golf ball and club, with a separate larger cup in the rough around the green as the hole. “Footgolf follows the flow of the golf course. The holes are much shorter because you can’t kick the ball as far as you hit a ball,” Chaska Town Course professional John Kellin said.

There are other options without a ball, club or stick. The Chaska Disc Golf Course on Park Ridge Drive opened in 2002 with nine holes that cover three acres of terrain. The course is near the middle schools. ongtime residents Hayley and Colton Moschenbacher love Chaska. So when their mother downsized her home and moved to the city’s center, they decided to move too. For the last five years, Hayley and her fiance have lived just across the street from her mother. Their aunt also lives in the downtown area. “I love it. We have lived here for about 24 or 25 years and moved to downtown Chaska five years ago,” Hayley said. “You get a taste of everything.” The siblings said downtown Chaska has a small town feel to it but also has big city vibes. There is always a lot of stuff to do and the best part is that just about everything is within walking distance. Hayley and Colton love to watch Chaska Cubs amateur baseball games in Athletic Park — it’s only about a mile from their home. They also frequent restaurants and coffee shops in the city’s center. Chaska’s also a good place to go shopping. “I recently started to like going to antique stops around

town,” Hayley said, adding that she likes to also go to the boutique and convenience stores as well. The Moschenbachers said it is nice they can walk to and from the annual River City Days festival. The event includes an array of performers, activities and food booths at City Square Park. The three-day festival takes place in July. The Curling and Event Center and Firemen’s Park brings lots of people into the city, the Moschenbauers noted. “We’ve never been curling, but it’s fun to watch,” Hayley said. The facility is packed with spectators watching curlers play during bonspiels. “It has a really cool atmosphere,” Colton added. Over at the park, they like to take their nephews over the bridge that connects Firemen’s Park to Veterans Park and push them on the swings at the playground. “We love downtown Chaska,” Hayley said.
LIVING SCHOOL DISTRICT 112 EASTERN CARVER COUNTY SCHOOLS Eastern Carver County Schools is a growing school system serving more than 9,000 students in Carver, Chanhassen, Chaska and Victoria. haska is a busy community filled with places to eat, drink, shop and relax. “Overall, the business climate is very good, we’ve seen a lot of growth in retail and a lot of construction,” said Jeff Filipek, president and CEO of the SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce. There are many jobs in the service industry, too. “One of the struggles seems to be retaining employees in the service industry,” he said. Chaska’s two main commercial sectors are the Chaska Commons on the northern side of town and the downtown corridor, north of the Minnesota River. Another business development is slated for the west side of town just off of Engler Boulevard and Creek Road and west of U.S. Highway 212. Businesses that have shown interest there include a medical center and a grocery store. Many major business retailers work out of Chaska Commons, while downtown Chaska has small, independent businesses that

sell things from wine to art to food and clothes. The Chaska Curling & Event Center draws in people from all around the region for weddings and bonspiels. Longtime resident Hayley Moschenbacher said the specialty businesses in downtown Chaska drew her to move to the heart of the city. She loves to go to antique stores, restaurants and coffee shops in the area. “Overall, we have a diverse economy in the area, and we’re lucky to have some good schools,” Filipek said. Golf tournaments are sure to return to the city. Most recently, Chaska had its name in the international spotlight when it hosted the 2016 Ryder Cup. Previously, it has hosted the PGA Championships in 2002 and 2009, the 2006 U.S. Amateur Championships and many others since 1970. “I think with this year’s Ryder Cup we’ve shown the world that we can host an event like that. I have no doubt that the PGA will make a return here in the future,” Filipek said.

While that is relatively good news, the flip side is that many businesses are struggling to find employees. The mantra I hear from many business owners, especially in the service and manufacturing industries, is that finding and retaining quality employees is a challenge. Carver County was recently awarded the Minnesota Association of Professional County Economic Developers Outstanding Economic Development Effort Award for the Chaska data center development program. U.S. Highway 212 — a four-lane freeway from Carver to Minneapolis — provides a critical transportation link

ome of the best times outdoor pets experience is right on Chaska’s city trails. “Some trails are readily accessible in downtown Chaska,” said resident and chihuahua owner Hayley Moschenbacher. One trail she likes to take with her dog and her brother, Colton, takes walkers and bikers to Chaska Athletic Park. “The trail network is one of the city’s hidden gems, it really kinda weaves into the neighborhoods,” said Assistant City Administrator Nate Kabat, adding that in some areas, users feel secluded. Northern Chaska is home to several horse farms and trails while horses are also welcome on the Minnesota Valley State Trail running parallel to the Minnesota River south of Chaska. Chaska has several veterinary clinics scattered throughout the city and quick access to area animal hospitals. In the heart of Chaska, on Chestnut Street (Highway 41) is the Carver-Scott Humane Society, where there is a small group of cats on-site for adoption as well as host adoption days for dogs on a monthly basis. The organization has been working for more than 25 years to find homes for animals. Another downtown adoption location is Valuecare Veterinary Clinic, which houses a cat adoption center and has many cats available. Visitors are encouraged to volunteer their time to help socialize the cats before adoption. The Southwest Metro Animal Rescue is a foster-based organization committed to the rescue of abandoned, abused and stray domestic animals. The group has monthly Pet Adoption Days for its animals and displays available pets in the Chaska Herald on a weekly basis. Owners have numerous options for grooming and pampering pets in Chaska with a host of groomers and pet spas. Chaska also features boarding facilities for all kinds of animals. Obedience classes and training are offered by several providers including the Carver-Scott Humane Society.
PET INFORMATION Chaska dog licenses, Chaska Police Department 952-448-4200 Dogs that are 6 months old or older must be licensed. The owner must provide documentation that the dog has been vaccinated against rabies within a year of the license application. Many rabies vaccinations have a two-year life. Chaska dog owners may purchase a half, one- or two-year license. Currently, the fee is $9 for a half year (after June 30), $18 for one year and $30 for two years. There is no discount for neutered animals. Dogs may not run at large and must wear their licenses. Dogs not meeting city requirements may be impounded. Animal waste by ordinance must be picked up. Cats are not regulated. Lost Pets Animal Control 952-361-1231 Impound 952-894-9065 The city animal control officer has a list of pets that have been impounded. Call to check if your lost pet is on the list. Carver-Scott Humane Society The Carver-Scott Humane Society serves Carver and Scott counties as well as a portion of Hennepin County. The organization has a location in downtown Chaska but the majority of all abandoned pets are housed in foster care until permanent adoption. The humane society frequently hosts pet adoption days. Located in downtown Chaska at 210 Chestnut Street North, the organization houses up to 12 cats on site.
