SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY NOV. 25 FOUNDING PARTNER
Your support for small businesses in our community is essential Small businesses are the foundation of every community across America, including Hutchinson, Minnesota. In 2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help businesses with their most pressing need – growing their business
and client base. The day encourages people to shop at small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. As a consumer, you are a key part in helping small businesses thrive. By shopping or dining at small businesses, you’re showing your support for all the small busi-
nesses in your neighborhood, and reinvesting in the community you call home. Please join us by showing your support for the Hutchinson business community not only on Saturday, Nov. 25, but throughout the year.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY NOV. 25 FOUNDING PARTNER
IMPACT OF LAST YEAR’S SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES Here are some of the primary reasons you should shop local and support the business owners who contribute greatly to the economic vitality of our community: Job creation – area businesses employ thousands of residents of all ages and skill level. Many families rely on the income earned by working at local business operations. Every storefront contributes to the local tax base and those dollars are used to maintain needed services, educate our children and keep local citizens safe. Shopping locally adds time and convenience to your busy days. Local stores are more apt to be managed by those who own the establishment and/or someone who is a recognized leader in the community. Your voice has a greater chance of being heard if you have a concern about a purchase or need help with a special order. A concentration of successful small businesses in a community may encourage other potential owners to expand if they know residents will be supportive of their operation. Doing business locally benefits the entire community!
An estimated 112 million people went out to shop on Small Business Saturday, which represents a 13 percent increase over 2015. Among those who shopped that day, 81 percent said they encouraged family and friends to support small, independentlyowned stores and restaurants on this day. Spending on the holiday was estimated at $16.2 billion. Close to three out of four American consumers are aware of the holiday.

Tips for staying safe in winter Winter is here, and sooner or later, the cold will be joined by plenty of snow and ice. While Minnesotans are equipped to handle the season better than most, a little refresher on winter safety might help. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has compiled numerous fact sheets about winter safety, with topics ranging from frostbite to Christmas trees. To see it all, head to https:// tinyurl.com/m3z5qsu. To stay one step ahead of impending dangerous weather, such as blizzards, sign up for McLeod County’s CodeRED service at https://tinyurl. com/ydd3axam. CodeRED is the backbone of the county’s emergency plan-

It’s nearly the time of year to be prepared for shovels, snowplows, ice fishing and snowmobiling. Some of those activities are fun, others a nuisance, but it’s important to play it safe for all.

WINTER Continued from A8
Take precautions whether you’re outdoors or driving ■■Ice formed over flowing water and currents is often dangerous, especially near streams, bridges and culverts. ■■Carry a rope, ice pick or flotation device when walking on ice alone or with others. ■■Avoid driving on ice when you can. Stay off during the night, especially during a snowfall. Drive slowly, and be prepared to exit quickly.
SHOVELING ■■Those older than age 40, or those who are relatively inactive, should be especially careful. If you have a history of heart trouble, check with your doctor before shoveling. ■■Avoid shoveling after eating or while smoking. ■■Take it easy. Snow shoveling is a weight-lifting exercise that raises your heart rate and blood pressure.
Warm up before starting the job and stretch both before and after shoveling. ■■Push snow forward rather than lifting it. Use your legs, not your back.
SPACE HEATERS ■■Keep portable heating devices at least 3 feet from anything combustable, such as paper, bedding and clothing. ■■Keep a constant eye on space heaters. Don’t leave them on while you are gone. ■■Don’t use space heaters to dry mittens or heat objects. ■■Be sure the cord does not overheat.
SIGNS OF FROSTBITE ■■Superficial frostbite is signaled by numbness, tingling, itching or
a cold sensation in sensitive areas. The areas appear white and frozen, or discolored. ■■Deep frostbite results in decreased sensation in a body part that can lead to complete loss of sensation. Swelling and blood-filled blisters can be seen and skin looks waxy, and turns purple. The area may be hard, or have no resistance when pressed on.
HOW TO DEAL WITH FROSTBITE ■■Get the person to a warm place as soon as possible, and seek medical help, or call 911. ■■Handle the frostbitten area gently, never rub it. ■■Slowly soak the area in lukewarm water (100 to 105 degrees) until it appears red and feels warm. Do not expose the area directly to a fire. ■■Loosely bandage the area with
dry, sterile dressings. ■■Place dry, sterile gauze between frostbitten fingers or toes. ■■Avoid breaking blisters. ■■Do not allow affected areas to refreeze.
in case you’re stuck in a blizzard. Store it in your vehicle. Include the following items: ■■Small candles and matches, ■■a small, sharp knife and plastic spoons, ■■red bandana or cloth, ■■pencil and paper, ■■large plastic garbage bag, ■■safety pins, whistle, ■■snacks such as raisins, semisweet chocolate, candy bars, chewing gum, food bars, canned soup, meat and poultry, ■■cell phone adapter to plug into lighter, and ■■plastic flashlight and spare batteries. Bulky items, such as 30-foot cord to use when exiting the vehicle, road f lares, sleeping bags, tow cables, jumper cables and a shovel should be kept somewhere accessible as well.
CHRISTMAS SAFETY Flameless candles are safer. Keep traditional candles in a sturdy container. Extinguish candles before leaving the room or sleeping. Keep Christmas trees away from heat vents and other heat sources. Don’t block an exit with a Christmas tree.
WINTER DRIVING SURVIVAL KIT Use an empty three-pound coffee can or something similar with a plastic cover to store items to keep you warm, energized and prepared
