Asked why they chose Chanhassen, newer residents cite the city’s thriving downtown, friendly neighborhoods, the extensive parks and trails system, and its hometown spirit on display during city-wide events like Feb Fest, the Easter Egg Hunt, Fourth of July celebration, and Christmas Tree Lighting in City Center Park. Lake Ann is the outdoor recreation hub. In summer it’s popular for boating, fishing, sunbathing and swimming; in winter, it’s home to ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. here’s a lot to look forward to as Chanhassen continues to grow its central downtown retail and commercial district, and take advantage of a prime retail/commercial/housing location just off Highway 212. Earlier this year, work began on the 110-acre Avienda development, located in the city’s southwest corner, off Powers Boulevard and Lyman Boulevard. Avienda represents a trend of mixing retail, commercial, and housing in what is being called a lifestyle community, a movement gaining attention around the country.

Among the first buildings will be a grocery store complex with market rate rental apartments above. Other housing choices in the development include single family homes, cottage homes, and one-level living housing. And with its easy access to Highway 212, the development hopes to become a regional destination with a variety of restaurants, shops, and a hotel. Downtown Chanhassen is getting a makeover. Earlier this year, the western section of the Frontier Building on West 78th Street was razed to make room for an Aldi grocery store and a 134-unit marketrate apartment complex called “The Venue.” At one time, that portion
of the Frontier Building complex was home to F rontier Hardware and Lumber, then converted to office and retail space. The Frontier Building’s east side, now under ownership by Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, remains intact with existing shops like Seedlings, Hoops and Threads, and The Edge. The city is also working closely with developers regarding the 185 open acres of former Prince property between Galpin Boulevard and Lake Ann. Earlier in 2018, the city’s Parks and Recreation department reviewed its study of the property, and how the city’s trails and park system could work within the property as it becomes a residential development.

greet people is Brindisi’s Pub; during the summer months, its outdoor patio is ideal for local people watching. Chanhassen is also home to pop icon Prince’s Paisley Park music studio. During his life, Prince often held after dark dance parties at the futuristic-looking studio; af-
ter his death in April 2016, Paisley Park was reopened as a museum. An annual celebration, held in April, brings visitors from around the globe to Chanhassen for four days of tours, workshops, panel discussions and live music. Finally, don’t miss stopping by the Chanhassen Cinema
movie theater downtown. New Zealand artist Mr. G painted a mural of Prince on its west wall, which is one of the highlights for Prince fans. The movie theater was Prince’s go-to theater for after hours movie screenings. The best part is, there is no charge to see the mural!

Enjoy shopping in a small-town atmosphere
MADE IN MN
BY UNSIE ZUEGE
H
aving a central downtown retail and business community is one of the many reasons people move to Chanhassen. They enjoy the small-town atmosphere, and the many locally-owned businesses. A few examples: Merlin’s Ace Hardware at 7844 Market Boulevard in the heart of downtown, Lotus Lake Gifts and Decor, Paragon Bakery and, most recently, Idly Dosai, Chanhassen’s first Indian grocery store. Merlin’s Ace Hardware in Chanhassen is a true family-owned business having had four generations of Ludfords owning and managing the store. There’s a framed black and white photograph resting on the back counter at Merlin’s Ace Hardware store that pays homage to the hardware store’s founder Merlin Ludford. Merlin’s son Kent Ludford pointed out that the young woman in the photo is Jessie Ludford, his grandmother. The youngster in her arms is Ken’s father Merlin Ludford who grew up to open a hardware store in 1950 in North Minneapolis. He later moved it to New Hope in 1965. In 1983, Merlin moved the hardware store into the Frontier Building, downtown Chanhassen, after buying out the previous hardware store owner Herb Bloomberg. Finally, in 1993, Merlin’s son Kent moved the family hardware store to its current location in Market Square. Merlin’s is a true family business, having had four generations involved in the store over the years: Merlin, his son Kent, grandson Chris and nephew Dennis, and finally, a fourth-generation grandniece Cassandra. Another family-owned business is Lotus Lake Gifts and Decor at 412 W. 78th St. Katie Nordby and her mother Nancy Lund opened their gift shop in June 2016. The cozy shop is filled with gifts, books, and home decor, and features products made by about 25 local artists, from paintings, jewelry, giftware, candles and purses. Lotus Lake also has a children’s section filled with toys, books and clothing. Katie was previously a special education teacher; her mother Nancy worked in the fragrance development industry. “We’d thrown the idea of a store around over the years, and finally we said, ‘Let’s go for it.’” They’re glad they did. Not only is the business community supportive – they send customers
to one another – but the community also makes a conscious decision to shop local. Their customer base includes not only the regulars but their families and friends. “The people are so wonderful,” Katie said. “Customers get mad if I call them customers. They’re friends.” Can you resist freshly baked cinnamon rolls? How about warm gooey caramel pecan rolls? Or doughnuts? Every town needs its hometown bakery and Tanis Hesser of Chaska is proud owner and chief baker at Paragon Bakery at 530 West 79th St. Hesser and her husband Ben opened their bakery in June 2016, offering freshly baked pastries, cookies, cakes and more. Paragon Bakery is the culmination of Tanis’ lifelong fascination with baking – everything about it from reading and doing research on not only baking and trying recipes but also the science of baking and perfecting the best recipes. She’s always worked in bakeries from Turtlebread Company in Minnepolis, to Great Harvest in Minnetonka, even the Costco Wholesale bakery. She and her husband Ben had always talked about opening their own bakery “where I can provide for the community a place where people can find really delicious baked goods made with quality ingredients,” Tanis said, “where I can showcase all the things I can bake from scratch, and of course continue my quest to try baking new things and perfecting the good ones.” Velen Ambalam and his wife Meena, and business partners Senthil Ramamoorthy and his wife Bavitha Senthil opened Idly Dosai International Market earlier this year. The Indian grocery store is at Colonial Square in Chanhassen, on West 78th Street across the street from Historic St. Hubert’s Church. Velen will gladly walk you through the shelves stocked with varieties of Indian rice, spices, oils, legumes, chutneys and Indian pickles, and describe how to cook them, as well as the many health benefits, too. And he is especially proud of his selection of snack food. “Indians love snacks,” Velen admits, and apologizes for not being able to offer the full spectrum of Indian snack foods for lack of shelf space. “This is only one-fourth of what I could have,” he said with a shrug of regret. The Ambalams chose to locate their Indian grocery store in Chanhassen, “because Chanhassen is growing and we’d like to tap the market.”

HISTORY
Once known as
‘Little Bavaria’
BY NANCY SIMPSON At one time the community we know as Chanhassen was cal led “Little Bavaria.” The tidy farms and lush surroundings reminded people of Bavaria, Germany. Farming and agriculture was the primary draw to this area. The soil was rich and crops would flourish. Our climate was similar to that of Germany allowing immig rants to use their agricultural Nancy knowledge of their Simpson home country. Franciscan priests from Germany are credited with establishing a Catholic mission church in Chanhassen. The congregation would be named St. Hubertus and would serve to hold the small farming community together in the new world. In the early 1960s, the farming industry began to diminish in the area. Farmlands were sold to land developers. A growing population from Minneapolis penetrated the community of Eden Prairie and was heading our way. Government and business officials of the village of Chanhassen prepared for population growth. Their wisdom and foresight launched Chanhassen into the city we enjoy today. The Chanhassen Historical Society takes pride in collaborating with other community organizations to tell our stories and keep the history of Chanhassen alive. Understanding the history of your community can offer a resident a feeling of belonging, much

RECYCLING Carver County Environmental Center Recyclables and household hazardous waste may be dropped off at this site, in many cases at no cost. The center also will collect items such as electronics and appliances for a fee. Thecenter features a product reuse area and an environmental education clearing house. These wastes include: solvents, household cleaners, pesticides, paint, wood preservatives, aerosols, batteries, automotive oil and antifreeze. The best way to handle the waste – except those that are banned – is to use it or give it to someone who will. If these options are not available to you, please contact the county for collection information. Sellers of automotive products may take used automotive waste, perhaps for a fee. Check before bringing the waste in. The county also schedules periodic hazardous waste collection programs. 116 Peavey Circle, Chaska 952-361-1835

Most sellers struggle with getting straight answers and trustworthy information when selling their home. This is because, sellers have questions about preparation, timing, money, price, etc.
I provide no commitment, quality advice and assistance that will allow you to spend the least amount of money while getting the most out when you sell. When customers work with me, they can expect to feel relaxed, comfortable and knowledgeable about the path forward!
