n behalf of the McLeod County Agricultural Association, I would like to welcome you to the 139th McLeod County Fair. This year’s fair runs from Wednesday, Aug. 17, through Sunday, Aug. 21, at the beautiful McLeod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. Every year about this time, excitement and anticipation starts to grow. All exhibitors — young and old — are starting to get exhibits ready for competition. From a great 4-H program and very competitive daily show to a spectacular fine arts and gardening display, the McLeod County Fair is truly the best in the state. This year again, we will provide entertainment in three venues. In the corporate tent for the evening, headline bands on the C and L stage include: regional favorites DiamondBack and Hairball. We welcome to this year’s fair a North Dakota favorite — 32 Below — with a country rock sound you need to hear. The weekend highlights include: Nashville recording artist Jacob Martin, the Killer Hayseeds, and Sunday’s new favorite crowd pleaser, the White Sidewalls, are back by popular demand. We promise to keep our daytime fairgoers entertained with a variety of acts in the Pavilion, South and Promise Stages, along with activities everywhere you turn. In the grandstand, there will be two nights of autocross, two nights of motocross and the inaugural run of the McLeod County Demolition Derby. The derby is under new management this year, and promises to bring a very exciting new show to our spectators. You won’t want to miss it. For our classic car fans, Sunday will feature a Classic Car Show on the grounds along with our second annual Ribfest. Is your mouth watering yet? More events are listed at the fair’s website at www.mcleodcountyfair.com. Thanks to the countless volunteers, our sponsors for donations and the support we receive from McLeod County throughout the year. A big thank you goes to Randy Starke, Al Koglin and staff for keeping the fairgrounds in great shape. Again, welcome and have a great time at the greatest county fair in the state — the McLeod County Fair.

Getting around at the McLeod County Fair Finding your way around the McLeod County Fair should be easy. The fairgrounds were designed and built only 15 years ago, and walking distances were kept in mind. The map at right shows north at the top. Fairgoers can find farm animals in buildings and tents on the fairgrounds’ east side, while most commercial booths and 4-H and Open Class exhibits are in buildings on the west side. The grandstand, outdoor arena and midway are at the south end.

lthough Marian Filk retired from her position as fair manager a couple of years ago, she agreed to come back last year and fill in through 2011 while a search was conducted for a new fair manager. Casey (Rickeman) Walters landed the job and began shadowing Filk on May 1. She will work with Filk through the fall and officially become the executive secretary and fair manager at the annual meeting of the McLeod County Agricultural Association in October. “It’s my dream job,” Walters said. “When I heard about the job, I thought it would be something cool to do.” A Hutchinson native, Walters has participated in the McLeod County Fair for years showing Holsteins and for one year — sheep. Walters graduated from Hutchinson High School in 2004 and from the University of Minnesota-St. Paul with a degree in environmental horticulture in 2008. She and her husband, Brian, live in Hutchinson. “I’m learning a lot and there is a lot to learn,” she said. “There is something new every day.”
Opening day In a change from past years, the gate fee will apply beginning at 1 p.m. on the opening day of the McLeod County Fair, Wednesday, Aug. 17. This is a change from past years. Gate fees remain the same as past years. Adult general admission is $5 and children 12 or younger are free. A season gate pass is available for $15. There is no charge to Continued on page 10

efore the sun rises each morning of the McLeod County Fair, Barb Koester is awake to bathe her horses and get them ready for the day’s showings. Even on the opposite end of the calendar, Koester is always busy taking care of her horses; calling up the vet, practicing footwork, and brushing and feeding them. “It’s a lot of work,” Koester said, but she Continued on page 20

loves horses. That may be the greatest understatement of the last half century of the County Fair. Because for the last 50 years she has been exhibiting her horses at the fair. She has been going to the fair since she was a small child and has continued to go even through multiple pregnancies. “I love the competitions,” she said. “It’s in my blood.” In a genealogical sense, raising horses really is in her blood. Both her parents and grandparents have been raising horses since before she was born, and her grandparents even named one of their horses after her. Koester started riding when she was only 3 and was able to ride by herself when she was 8. When she was 10, her parents got their first horse trailer and the number of horse shows Koester competed in started to increase. Over the years, she has accumulated between 600 and 700 trophies and other awards from horse shows.

When Koester joined the Little Crow Riders saddle club, a part of both the Western Saddle Club Association and the Mid-State Association, she had only three horses. Her number of equine pets grew and one year she brought 21 horses to the County Fair. This year she plans on bringing four, Ben, Spinner, Mark Me Wild and Colorized. This is the first year that Koester hasn’t been to a single Mid-State point show. Awards are given out at point shows as well as at the end of the year after points are added up. Most years she ends up with a variety of first-place trophies from both individual shows and end-of-the-year high-point awards. But last year was the first in almost 20 years that she didn’t win a single high-point award. She didn’t forget how to ride. Her farm suffered through a fire in 2007. Among a lot of other property, she lost her horse trailer, which has made it much more difficult to carry her horses around. Luckily she was able to get all of her horses to safety before her barn caught fire. She is hoping to get a new trailer and start competing more again. For now she is borrowing friends’ horse and livestock trailers to get to shows and to the County
Fair. “I’ll find a way to get them there,” she said. All four of her children have taken an interest in horses as well. Her 16-year-old twins, Eric and Emily, exhibit their mother’s horses at the fair with her, as did her older children, Amy and Aaron, when they were younger. When her son, Aaron, grew from a junior rider to a senior rider he tried to take on his mother in direct competition. “He thought he was going to beat me in egg and spoon, but he couldn’t,” Koester said. Egg and spoon, for those who aren’t familiar, is an event in the County Fair and in many other horse shows in which riders try to balance an egg on a teaspoon while riding their horse. Those who attend the shows should watch for Colorized, the tricolored Appaloosa. He is a white gelding with brown spots and a single light-brown spot on his neck. Colorized won Koester a first-place award at the WSCA Championship Show a few years ago in the egg and spoon competition. To qualify for the Championship Show, riders must place first or second in a WSCA qualifying show. “You know you’re competing against the best,“ Koester said. Colorized also has earned numerous

other awards at Mid-State shows and other WSCA Championship Show competitions. Unfortunately, just like any other animal, horses eventually expire. Just this spring one of Koester’s horses, Wild Thing, passed away at the age of 26. Colorized is 24 years old and has been with Koester since he was 4. “It’ll be pretty hard when I lose him,” she said. “They get to be a part of the family.” Despite potential hardships, Koester has no plans of slowing down. She will keep on exhibiting at the fair “until my youngest kids are sick of it.” And she’ll only stop riding when she gets too old to physically ride, she said. Her family is what keeps her exhibiting year after year, she said. “They’ve been behind me all this time.” If not for them, she said, “I wouldn’t be doing it as long as I have.” Besides bringing her horses to shows throughout the year, she enjoys occasionally taking them for a ride in her pasture and trail riding with her family in Darwin each Labor Day. “Horses are very loving animals. You can talk to them if you have problems,” Koester said. “They don’t answer, but they always listen.”
Colorized is one of Koester’s oldest horses and has been with her since she was 4.

A proud display of colorful quilts MONEY LEFT BY THE LATE ANN PORTELE WILL GIVE THE COUNTY FAIR THREE DISPLAY CASES Intern If the Fine Arts Building at the McLeod County Fair seemed a bit more vibrant last year, it’s because of the new quilt cases that were purchased before the fair. The cases came from money donated to the fair by rural Hutchinson native Ann Portele. She passed away in 2007 and left a certificate of deposit for the County Fair that matured last year. The money was used to buy three new glass cases for displaying quilts. Now,
according to Home Activities Building Supervisor Julie Jergens, quilts can be more fully displayed, instead of being confined to showing small patches of each. The cases came at a perfect time for quilters in McLeod County. In the past few years quilt entries have been way up, Jergens said, due partly to the big base of quilters surrounding Thimbleberries. Portele was a longtime teacher in rural McLeod County schools before teaching in Bloomington and eventually retiring from the Glencoe School System in 1984.

Eating right W at the fair By KAY JOHNSON Staff Writer
ould you walk a mile for an order of cheese curds? How about 4.5 miles? That’s what it would take to walk off the calories in one order of cheese curds. If that sounds extreme, how about splitting an order with a friend? Sharing fair food is a strategy that can be used to help fight the call of the caramel apple. Another helpful strategy is to set a calorie limit before you go to the fair. What are you willing to share and what do you want to eat by yourself? Beware of grazing — sampling a little of this and and a little of that can add up fast. Stay hydrated. Sometimes we confuse hunger with thirst. Water is a calorie-free beverage that’s good for you. Eat before you go. If you’re already full, it’s harder to find room for a funnel cake or a candy bar on a stick. Downsize. Order the smallest size available. Forget about super-sizing your order. It’s not worth all the extra calories. Check out all the food booths before making your choices.
FOOD FROM THE FAIR CAN CARRY A HIGH PRICE TAG FOR YOUR HEALTH. KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE TREATING YOURSELF.
Calories count. If you can’t help yourself and have to try everything on your yummy list, plan to cut back on your food consumption or increase your exercise in the days ahead. Just so you know, an extra 100 calories a day can add up to a 10-pound yearly weight gain. For planning, on average you have to walk 1 mile to burn 100 calories. This means, if you eat a large corn dog, it will cost you 4.5 miles. Here’s a list of fair food and the number of miles it will take to walk it off: Fried candy bar on a stick: 4.5 miles Funnel cake, 6-inch diameter: 3 miles Soft pretzel: 3 miles Caramel apple: 3 miles Soft drink, 32 ounce: 2.5 miles Sno-cone: 2.5 miles Cotton candy: 1.5 miles Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension

When it comes to county fairs, McLeod’s is one of the largest in the state. It’s also one of the latest fairs of the summer. The McLeod County Fair typically attracts, on average, 40,000 people during its five-day run. That makes it the 12th best attended fair among Minnesota’s 86 county fairs. The Meeker County Fair in Litchfield, by comparison, attracts 15,000 people; the

Renville County Fair in Bird Island gets 14,000; Wright County Fair in Howard Lake, 55,000; and Sibley County Fair in Arlington, 20,000. The largest fair in the state is in Owatonna, where the six-day Steele County Fair attracts, on average, 285,000 people. This year’s fair runs Aug. 16-21, when the big attractions will include Great Frontier Bull Riding and the ’80s band, Hairball. The most northern county fair is in Roseau, where the Roseau County Fair draws 40,000 fair-goers. This year’s fair was in mid-July and featured a tractor pull, demolition races, musical talent contest and monster truck show. The state’s smallest county fair is in Mahnomen County, which attracts 3,500 people. This quaint 95-year-old hometown fair, which runs Aug. 25-28, features carnival rides, animals, booths, grandstand events, and more food vendors then ever before. This year’s Mahnomen County Fair grandstand events include County Awards, Demolition Derby, a Baja race and Enduro Racing. The McLeod County Fair is the final fair in the region, and one of the latest across the state, with only seven other fairs starting after Aug. 21.
