T
he people have spoken. This special issue turns the spotlight on the winners of the Readers’ Choice Awards. In August, the Hutchinson Leader asked readers to vote for their favorites in a total of 67 categories. More than 1,200 ballots were submitted via online or print. The last time the Leader conducted a Readers’ Choice poll of favorites was in 2006. While some things change, much remains the same and that can be a good thing — especially if it’s St. Anastasia Catholic Church’s chicken dinner. It earned the Readers’ Choice Award for “Favorite Church Chicken Dinner” in 2006 and held on to the title 11 years later. Served during the Fall Festival, it continues to be a hit year after year. Like St. Anastasia’s chicken dinner, the State Theatre was named “Favorite Date Place” for the second time. “If you’re a dating couple of any age, it’s still the best deal. You can see a movie for $2.50 on Mondays, and still afford a snack,” said Miles “Red” McGonagle, owner, in 2006. His words still ring true today. The theater hasn’t raised its admission prices in 11 years. The local downtown Hutchinson landmark has been a favorite for dating couples as well as for people of all ages since it opened its doors on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1937. “The new State Theatre, costing more than $ 80,000 and seating about 850 people, will be one of the finest and most modern buildings in Hutchinson,” reported the Leader. “No expense has been spared by the owners of this theatre in giving Hutchinson a theatre that ranks among the finest theatres in the country.” Those words might have been lost in the passage of time if not for the efforts of Red and his wife, Linda. The couple refurbished the marquee, building and apartments returning them to their previous glory. The three-screen theater reopened in September 2005. Another double winner is the Hutchinson Jaycee Water Carnival. It was voted “Favorite Celebration or Festival” in 2006 and again in 2017.

McCormick’s Family Restaurant’s eggs Benedict is a double winner. It was named “Favorite Breakfast” in the Hutchinson Leader’s Readers’ Choice Awards and earlier this year, it won WCCOTV’s social media “Best of Minnesota” competition. It’s no wonder. The festival has grown from its original one day of events in 1941 to eight days of wonder this year in celebration of its 75th anniversary. The Water Carnival’s signature event is the Grande Day Parade. It continues to draw thousands of people on Father’s Day Sunday. 3M is a returning winner. It was named “Favorite Local Employer” in 2006 and it continues to lead in this category 11 years later. While a longtime Hutchinson business, McCormick’s restaurant is a first-time winner in the “Favorite Breakfast” category. Earlier this year, McCormick’s version of eggs Benedict was named “Minnesota’s Best” by people casting votes through social media for WCCO-TV’s “Best of Minnesota” weekly feature. It’s not surprising local readers agreed. According to restaurant owner Emmet McCormick, the secret to their award-winning breakfast dish is the hollandaise sauce. “It’s made fresh each day,” he told WCCO. “We make everything handmade here, and our best dish is our eggs Benedict.”
Son Joe concurred — the sauce is the key. “And we don’t just drizzle the hollandaise, we cover it with it,” he said. While the restaurant is famous for its eggs Benedicts, readers also voted it “Favorite Bowl of Soup,” “Favorite Pie “ and “Favorite Server.” While many winners were longtime Hutchinson favorites, new businesses also earned kudos. Named “Favorite Bakery” was Elena’s Bakery — The Sweet Spot in downtown Hutchinson. “Their muffins and caramel rolls are amazing,” a voter said. Another new business to be recognized was Pizza Ranch. This business, which opened July 17, won the “Favorite Chicken” category. “I love their chicken and potatoes/gravy,” a reader said. It also earned an honorable mention in the “Favorite Pizza” category. The Readers’ Choice Awards demonstrates the best of Hutchinson. Look inside to see the entire list of readers’ favorites.
