MAYOR’S COLUMN

Greetings from Mayor Gary Forcier W

elcome to Hutchinson! As the mayor and a lifelong resident, I can’t stress enough all the positive things Hutchinson has going on. Every city will try to highlight all the great things going for it, but let me tell you about the unique combination of amenities that make Hutchinson a destination worth exploring. Hutchinson has a rich history as a prairie area settled by a family of nationally acclaimed singing brothers. We are proud of our

history and celebrate our legacy. Today, Hutchinson is well known as a great and skilled manufacturing city, but it is also a destination city. Hutchinson is a regional hub, attracting visitors from near and far. Whether you are here for one of our many events or festivals, or just spending a day away shopping and relaxing, we want you to feel at home in Hutchinson. We offer many activities for both young and old. We have a fantastic park and trail system. Our revitalized

downtown offers many different shopping and dining experiences. Our schools have consistently rated high on state surveys. We have one of the few independent health care systems left in the state. Our arts community is thriving from local support. Hutchinson has a strong faith community with many options for worship. I encourage you to spend just a little more time exploring Hutchinson. I hope that you will see, like I have, that Hutchinson is a

MAYOR GARY FORCIER beautiful area to live, work and play.

PEOPLE ON THE STREET “I like the friendliness of the people in Hutchinson and the convenience of everything we have here — the shopping opportunities and entertainment and recreational opportunities. Hutchinson is large enough that we have a lot of opportunities yet small enough so that you can go to the store and see 20 people you know. I enjoy running into people and talking.” TINA VORLICEK Administrative Assistant, Distric 423

BOB TEPLEY Retired

“What I like about Hutchinson is that there’s so much to do. There’s such as variety of things to do and places to go. There’s different restaurants to choose from, trails if you like to walk or bike, and there’s interesting history if you’re into history. It’s like the perfect town, not too big and not too small.”

“For me, Hutchinson is centrally located. My parents live in Willmar and my mother-in-law lives in the Cities. I’ve been here for 18 years and I’ve found the people to be very welcoming. I’ve become good friends with my clients and it makes my job fun. And I really like the feel of the town. It’s been a great community for my kids to grow up in.”

ZACH SYNSTELIEN Student at Hutchinson High School

JODIE NASSIRZADEH Independent hair stylist, Salon Montage

“I’ve been in Hutchinson for about 10 years, and I think it’s a great place to raise kids. What I like about it is that it’s family-oriented. I feel safe raising my kids here. And I like how the community has been supportive and helpful. It’s just the right size of a town where people know each other.”

“It’s not a city that goes overboard and because it’s not so big, it can reach out to more people. The school I attend is amazing and all the teachers will go to lengths to help with your studies. Everyone is so willing to help out here in Hutch.”

ELENA VOLKOV Owner, Elena’s Bakery, The Sweet Shop

“We’ve enjoyed our about 41 years in town. We moved to Hutchinson in 1974 because I was in the mechanical and plumbing field and there were opportunities here. We raised all three of our children here, and as far as academics, we have found those to be plentiful. The community has been very open and we’ve enjoyed going to the same church here all those years. We’ve seen Hutchinson grow.”

TRAILS LUCE LINE STATE TRAIL In addition to parkland, the city has invested in an extensive network of recreational trails linking most parts of the city. Most trails have been constructed alongside streets when they are rebuilt. Hutchinson has been designated a Bicycle-Friendly Community. The Luce Line State Trail also passes through the city and will be paved through McLeod in 2015 after a wait of more than 30 years. The trail stretches from Plymouth, a western Twin Cities suburban, to Meeker County’s Cosmos Park on Thompson Lake, about 18 miles west of Hutchinson. The trail is built on the former Luce Line Railroad, which served the area from about 1915 to 1972. The trail is maintained by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Back by popular demand will be the band — Star and Micey. The group will make its second appearance at the RiverSong Music Festival this summer.

PARKS HUTCHINSON PARKS Hutchinson’s highly regarded park system, second oldest only to New York’s Central Park as the oldest platted park system in the country, boasts of 32 parks, 21 playgrounds, 22 ball fields and more than 30 acres of prairie. With about 26 acres of parkland and open spaces per

1,000, Hutchinson is well above the national average of 10 acres per 1,000. Founding fathers — John, Judson and Asa Hutchinson (a statue of them can be found in Library Square) made sure the original 640-acre city plat in 1855 had three parks — Library Square, North and South parks. Hutchinson’s parks are the site of many of the city’s major events,

such as Arts & Crafts Festival at Library Square, RiverSong at West River Park, and Hutchinson Jaycee Water Carnival, which has activities at several park venues. Park shelters, which exist at several parks, can be reserved for family gatherings and other functions, for a fee, Call the Parks and Recreation Department at 320-0587-2975, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

WILDLIFE SANCTUARY GOPHER CAMPFIRE CLUB The Gopher Campfire Club’s Wildlife Sanctuary is along the Crow River between Riverside Jaycee Park and Masonic West River Park. The 106-year-old club is one of the state’s oldest conservation organizations. The 25-acre site is home to an estimated 14,000 geese, as well as ducks, turkeys, swans and a number of deer. The Luce Line State Trail passes along the sanctuary’s river side.

WHAT A DISH! Food options come in many flavors

F

rom restaurants with longtime local ties to new franchises, in Hutchinson, you’ll find the best all-American fare around as well as Chinese, Japanese and Mexican. If you’re a fan of icy treats, there are several options including Dairy Queen, Culver’s and Below Zero Frozen Yogurt. Hutchinson’s ties to local agriculture continues with the Hutchinson Farmers Market. From May through October, local producers sell a variety of homegrown products ranging from flowers and vegetables to bread, jams and honey. The market has a permanent home at Depot LATEST Marketplace, which offers convenient parking, CONTENT a roof in the event of rainy weather and other amenities. If you’re a fan of the bulbous plant, garlic, don’t miss the Minnesota Garlic Festival Aug. 15 at the McLeod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. Come fall, Taste of Hutchinson, an outdoor food court, offers foods of all kinds at the Arts and Crafts Festival in downtown Hutchinson.

FOOD FOOD AND FELLOWSHIP EQUALS FUN IN HUTCHINSON There’s an unwritten rule in Hutchinson that if you want people to attend an event serve refreshments. Whether it’s something as easy as coffee and cookies or something more elaborate, food brings people together. It’s the fodder for fellowship that comes from breaking bread together. Hutchinson Farmers Market Whether you’re buying fresh-from-the-garden vegetables or homemade jams and jellies, you can find it at the Hutchinson Farmers Market and its new permanent home at Depot Marketplace. From May to October, shoppers are guaranteed to find a cornucopia of homegrown foods that will enhance any meal. The market is open Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Dairy Day June is Dairy Month. Hutchinson, with its strong roots in agriculture, celebrates the event with festivities in Library Square. People of all ages — some years as many as 1,000 or more — enjoy lunch, which includes cheese, ice cream and milk — with a side of activities such as a petting zoo, local celebrity milking contest, machinery display, live music and more. Social at Music In The Park Music brings people together on Monday evenings from June through August. A social sponsored by local nonprofit groups raises money and offers sweet treats. People bring their lawn chairs, listen to the music and enjoy a treat of a slice of pie with ice cream. Noon Recitals and Salad Luncheons Peace Lutheran Church has paired a noon recital featuring local performers with a salad luncheon for more than 20 years. The concerts last 30 minutes followed by good “church” food and fellowship in the Peace Center.

Riversong Music Festival Music is also served at the annual RiverSong Music Festival in July. Two days of live music on two stages draws people to Masonic West River Park. Beer, wine and pop are available to pair with a variety of foods available from vendors serving everything from hot-from-thegrill hamburgers to sweet-andsalty kettle corn.

Lutheran and Peace Lutheran churches are famous for their Christmas Cookie Sales. You can expect lines to form early to buy the homemade treats. Seasonal treats are also served at Trees and Traditions at Christ the King Lutheran Church; A Christmas Cup of Tea Reading at the Jorgenson Hotel; the Women’s

Candlelight Dinners at Shalom Baptist Church; the Hutchinson Downtown Christmas Celebration; Crow River Singers Christmas Concerts and more. When it comes to food, friendship and fun, you can’t go wrong in Hutchinson.

Mcleod County Fair One of the highlights of August is the McLeod County Fair. It’s been a tradition for 143 years. It’s hard to go hungry when food vendors are parked one after the other. Whether your tastes run from a foot-long hot dog dressed with fried onions, a squirt of ketchup and a stripe of mustard, a cone of sugary sweet cotton candy or a cool and creamy dairy shake — there’s something for everyone. If you’re not hungry when you get there, you will soon be due to the delicious smells wafting through the air. Taste of Hutchinson September brings the Hutchinson Arts and Crafts Festival with the Ambassadors Taste of Hutchinson. The outdoor food court is a natural meeting place for people who want a snack, lunch or just an opportunity to rest their feet. The variety of foods offered ranges from hot-from-the-fryer cheese curds to a walking taco.

The Sweet Spot

Elks Gun and Coin Show While people say they head to the Elks Gun and Coin Show for the opportunity to buy, sell and swap, it’s hard to beat the hot-from-the-grill hamburgers and other food items served by volunteers from the Elks Lodge. The money from this event helps to fund local projects.

The Sweet Spot Bakery offers a Variety of handmade breads, pastries, desserts and other baked goods. We also welcome custom wedding & Special occasion cakes.

Peace Lutheran and Our Savior’s Cookie Sales From Thanksgiving to Christmas, local events offer a bounty food and festivities. Too busy to bake? Our Savior’s

City Center is Hutchinson’s hub

W

hen the more than 14,000 residents of Hutchinson need to request service from their city government, they seek out Hutchinson City Center, 111 Hassan St. S.E. It is there they can pick up a building permit, pay their water, sewer and garbage bills, learn about ordinances and attend various city meetings including those of the City Council and Planning Commission. City Center is also home to the city’s Department of Motor Vehicles, where motorists may obtain a driver’s license or vehicle plates. Less than 100 yards away, at 50 Hassan St. S.E., is the Hutchinson Public Library. The original portion of the historic Carnegie library was built in 1904 and added on to in 1985. Most county services are available at the McLeod County Courthouse in downtown Glencoe, 13 miles away on State Highway 22, or at the county’s North LATEST Complex, on Glencoe’s northside. CONTENT Hutchinson Public School District 423 educates about 3,000 students in four buildings, the oldest of which is the 1930s-era Park Elementary, which dominates downtown from a ridge a block west. Hutchinson also has elementary and secondary charter schools, private schools, and a campus of Ridgewater College, a two-year state college based in Willmar.

Lifestyle Focus Hutchinson City Center is the epicenter for all matters great and small regarding city government. It’s where the City Council, Planning Commission and other boards hash out agreements on pressing issues. It’s also where citizens go for routine tasks such as renewing a driver’s license or obtaining a building permit.

CITY COUNCIL Hutchinson is a charter city using a council-city administrator plan of government. Hutchinson residents elect a mayor, for a two-year term, and four council members for staggered four-year terms representing specific seats, but not wards. City elections take place even number years as part of the general election in November. The council delegates administrative duties to the city administrator, who is accountable to the council for administration of city business as directed by the council. The administrator oversees the day-to-day administrative duties and hires city staff.

Utility buildings in residential districts shall not exceed 12 by 16 feet and shall be 6 feet or more from all lot lines of adjoining lots and shall not be located within a utility easement. Q. Is there a requirement regulating sizes of detached garages? A. Yes, Section 7.14 of the Hutchinson Zoning Ordinance states detached garages may be up to 1,000 square feet. Garages from 1,000 to 1,500 square feet may be allowed with a conditional-use permit. Q. Am I allowed to build a poletype building on my property? A. Pole buildings may be allowed by conditional-use permit only if siding and roofing and building materials are similar to the principal structure.

Q. Can I split a lot leaving a garage/accessory building on the new lot without a house? A. You may split the lot leaving an accessory building alone on the lot however, a house must be built within one year of approval of the lot split or the accessory building must be removed. Q. Why are there requirements for measurements from my property line? A. Setback requirements protect the property owner from major encroachments on or near their property. Setbacks also ensure proper room for utility and street uses and drainage. Q. Does my property line begin at the curb? A. Not necessarily. The street right-of-way determines where the property line begins. In most cases, the property line is setback 10 feet from the curb. This is a general “rule of thumb.” However, there could be more or less right of way depending on the area of town.

Special activities are offered throughout the year and include: Stories in the Park, Bookworm Buddies, book clubs, reading programs and more. These events are free and support family literacy and learning for children, teens and adults. Interested in supporting the library? Friends of the Hutchinson Public Library raise money to help the library. The group sponsors Project Bookshelf in December. It also hosts a fall used book sale during the Arts

To help, Historic Hutchinson has created the following walking, biking or driving tour. Harry S. Merrill House, 225 Washington Ave. W., also known locally as the Harrington-Merrill House, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is undergoing restoration through a joint publicand-private relationship between the city of Hutchinson and Historic Hutchinson. The house, built in 1858, is the oldest building in Hutchinson. It also ranks as one of the oldest buildings in McLeod

County. “Little House” at 405 Franklin St. S.W. is a one-and-a-half story brick Eastlake Cottage, with delicately sawed work on the front porch, was built in 1874. Adams and Quast House, 406 Main St. S., has a stone foundation that was laid in 1901 and construction of the three floors started in the spring of 1902 under the direction of St. Paul architects O’Meyer and Thori. Merton S. Goodnow House, 446 Main St. S., was built in 1913. This home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, for its prairie-style architecture. It was designed by well-known architects Purcell and Elmslie, members of the “Prairie School of Architecture” with Frank Lloyd Wright. Oakland Cemetery was established in 1857. It is owned and operated by the city of Hutchinson. Its name comes from the majestic oak trees that can still be found throughout the cemetery grounds. William Davidson House, 345 Hassan St. S.E., Davidson built this house in 1889. Being a builder by trade would perhaps explain why it has such elaborate woodwork. L. A. Ritter House, 325 Hassan St. S.E., has been lovingly restored. It was built in 1899 by Ludwig A. Ritter, a successful hardware store owner. United States Post Office, 245 Main St. S., was dedicated in 1940, although it was not fully completed until May 17, 1941. With the exception of the front doors, windows and the addition of the enclosed dock, the main part of the structure has not changed.

Places. In 1985, a bond referendum for $750,000 allowed for the enlargement of the Carnegie Library. State Theatre, 35 Washington Ave. E., was built during the Great Depression. After being closed for several years, the building was restored and reopened as a threescreen theater in 2005. 1920 Craftsman-style house, 490 Main St. N., has most of its original lighting and bathroom fixtures, plus hardwood floors, crown moldings and baseboards. When built, it had the modern convenience of a central vacuum system. Another Craftsman-style home, 16 Grove St. S., was built in 1913. The family room includes a coal-burning fireplace with a carved wooden front piece and mantle. Christlieb House, 26 Grove St. S.W., was built in 1900 by Frank Brabec at 115 Jefferson St. S. In 1958, the McLeod County Historical Society purchased the home for $2,000 and used it as a museum. In 1981, the home was sold and moved to its present site. Reiner-Hurt House, 28 Grove St. N.W., was built in 1891. The 17 1/2-inch walls were built of bricks made at the local Madsen Brick and Tile Co. “Danish Castle,” 435 Washington Ave. W., was built by Jens Juul, a general contractor. For many years, an American flag and a Danish flag flew from a tall flagpole on the property. Leonard Klammer House, 715 Harmony Lane, is one of three art deco-style buildings in Hutchinson.

Opera House, at the corner of Second Avenue and Main Street, was built in 1892 for $10,000.

Erickson-Voigt House, 740 Dale St., was built around the turn of the 20th century. Many changes have been made in the structure, but its original stained glass can be found in several rooms.

Hutchinson Public Library, 50 Hassan St. S.E., was made possible by a $10,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie. In 1977, it was listed in the National Register of Historic

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 102 Second Ave. S.E., was built in 1892 at a cost of $1,900. Seating capacity was 175. The land was donated by D.A. Adams. the women of the 2015 | hutchinson.bigfishlifestyle.com

utchinson was founded by three members of the Singing Hutchinson Brothers — Asa, John and Judson. They were part of a band of travelers who established the settlement on the crest of a hill looking over a strikingly LATEST beautiful river valley. CONTENT From that beginning, the town has earned a reputation as a regional center known for its beautiful parks, safe neighborhoods, good schools, shopping options and lifestyle opportunities. Residents talk about Hutchinson’s welcoming feeling and sense of community. It’s a city where people give generously of their time, talent and resources.

Since its founding in September 2001, Common Cup Ministry has developed into a viable and well-respected link in the chain of emergency services. On-call volunteers meet with people seeking help to determine the kinds of assistance that would best aid them according to their individual situations. The ministry supplies spiritual help in the form of prayer, distribution of Bibles and other Christian resource materials along with a directory of area church worship times as well as vouchers rather than with cash for lodging, food, transportation and other basic needs. Common Cup relies solely on donations from the churches, businesses and individuals of McLeod County. It conducts fundraisers throughout the year.

PETS ON PARADE

Lifestyle Focus

Furry friends are welcome

P

ets and people thrive in Hutchinson. Owners can often be seen walking their four-legged friends along city streets or in one of the city’s more than 30 parks. LATEST To help with the problem of dog waste, the Outdoor Group CONTENT of the 2012-13 Hutchinson Leadership Institute launched a fundraising effort to buy dog waste stations for local parks. At the time, the idea was new to Hutchinson, but in use in other communities including Minneapolis, St. Paul, Eagan and Victoria. The stations have provided a convenient place to collect and deposit dog waste while keeping local parks cleaner for all users. Hutchinson is served by the Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter. The city is home to two veterinary clinics and other businesses catering to pets.

ANIMAL SHELTER Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter, 880 Century Ave S. W., Hutchinson, provides care to unwanted, stray or abused animals in the form of veterinary care, housing and adoption in the McLeod County area. The group also works to educate the public regarding animal care and overpopulation. Adoption hours are 5 to 7 p.m Tuesday and Thursday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call the shelter at 320-234-9699, or visit its website at www. heartofminnesota.org.

Paws on Parade is one of the top fundraisers for the Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter. This year’s event will be May 30 at the McLeod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson.
