INDEPENDENT THRESHERS FESTIVAL HEIMATFEST

American ingenuity Threshers capitalize on I-35W bridge construction to build Model T garage BY DAVID SCHUELLER dschueller@swpub.com

Waste not, want not. When giant forms used to make the concrete pillars of the new Interstate 35W bridge showed up at an auction across the street from the Scott Carver Threshers’ land, members seized an opportunity.

Brainstorm: No. 1 The hunt begins. Here is the first clue leading to the Heimatfest medallion:

Gas pumps, old collectibles and Model T automobiles, and other items of interest are planned for this Model T garage, which opens this week at the Scott Carver Threshers Festival.

They bought more than 20 of the forms made of plywood and boards, each measuring about 8 feet by 40 feet. Threshers club members took them apart, and used the plywood in a new building that will open at this year’s Scott Carver Threshers Festival.

The mud flew, engines roared, cars broke apart and the crowd roared during the demolition derby on Saturday, July 30. Here, during the Stock Powder Puff division, the car of Amber Schmitt of Jordan crashes into another driver.

State Sen. Claire Robling, Jordan, accuses Scott County Commissioner Dave Menden of milking her goat dry before she got a chance in the county fair celebrity milking contest. “They can shut down the government, but they can’t shut down the cow,” announcer Jim Terwedo chided Robling and state Sen. Al DeKruif (right).

CREMATORY

Jordan mayor denies allegations related to restraining order Ewals might not be able to conduct mayoral functions, lawyer says BY MATHIAS BADEN editor@jordannews.com

Faced with a restraining order against him, the mayor of Jordan will get his day in civil court. Jordan’s yearlong struggle in regard to a downtown crematory reached new levels last month, resulting in funeral

home and crematory owner Mark Ballard’s restraining order against Pete Ewals being granted July 18. Ewals denies the allegations made in Ballard’s request for a restraining order, said attorney Marsh Halberg, who last week called the Jordan Independent on the mayor’s behalf.

The mayor has filed a request for a court hearing, which was not requested by Ballard. The one-year restraining order granted by Scott County District Court, which found that Ballard was under “immediate and present danger of harassment to justify temporary relief,” stems from an incident during which, according to Bal-

lard and Judge Caroline Lennon, Ewals followed, pursued or stalked Ballard and made uninvited visits to Ballard. The judge also found that “the harassment has or is intended to have a substantial adverse effect on (Ballard’s) safety, security or privacy.”

Council takes vote of no confidence BY MATHIAS BADEN editor@jordannews.com

On Monday, the Jordan City Council took a vote of no confidence in Mayor Pete Ewals. “What he (allegedly) did was enforced the judge’s

order b efore comi ng to the council,” said Councilmember Tanya Velishek, in making a motion of “nonconfidence in our mayor and not condone his (alleged) actions.”
