INDEPENDENT ELECTION 2012
Buesgens won’t run; Robling will Cities, county must redraw their lines BY SHANNON FIECKE sfiecke@swpub.com
After a 14-year run, state Rep. Mark Buesgens has decided it’s time to wrap it up. His announcement not to seek reelection comes two days after redistricting split his new home of Savage from his hometown of Jordan, but Buesgens said his decision is not due to redistricting. “It ’s ti me for new blood a nd thoughts, and for me and family to seek new adventures, Buesgens said. This means an open seat and likely hotly contested GOP endorsement battle for the right-leaning new House District 55B, which includes southern chunks of Shakopee, along with Prior Lake, Jordan, and the townships from St. Lawrence east to Credit River. State Rep. Michael Beard, R-Shakopee, and Sen. Claire Robling, R-Jordan, also announced their intentions to seek re-election late last week, ending weeks of speculation.

200 daughters dance BY DAVID SCHUELLER dschueller@swpub.com
Cute? Definitely. The Jordan Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) held its first Daughter Dance late last month, and it got good reviews from Athletic Director Jeff Vizenor. “It was a really neat event, Vizenor said. It did, however, have some similarities to a high school dance, he said — all the boys were on the outside watching the girls dance. Based on the success of the dance — with more than 200 girls
attending, according to one estimate — the PTA is hoping to make it an annual event. The dance is a chance for daughters at the elementary school to invite a special adult, whether it’s a dad, mom, aunt, or grandparent, to spend an evening with friends. The PTA is also planning a Son’s March Madness event for sons with their mothers or other special adults. It will include sports-related activities like basketball and races, and will be held 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 16, for the boys of Jordan Elementary School.

Robert Huss (left) of Wolf Motors, the Rev. Father Timothy Yanta of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, and Cadillac dinner planner Chad Weber each believe they have the winning raffle ticket for a drawing that will take place on Saturday. During the Cadillac dinner at the Ridges of Sand Creek golf course, Yanta will fi nd out if one of the first tickets sold will garner the prize, a 2012 Ford F-150. Yanta bought tickets numbered 1-10. Huss and Weber also purchased chances. No tickets are left for the raffle, but as Yanta said, “If you snooze, you lose. Proceeds from the event support St. John’s school.

Settling into its new building, Jordan Dental Care has committed to the long term and primed the pump for expansion. “We like Jordan. We live in Jordan. We’re happy here, Dr. Elizabeth Thelemann said. “Our children are going to school here. We wanted to give back. I never went into dentistry to make money. Hopefully, I make enough to get by. Much of Thelemann’s recent earnings are going toward a new venture: owning a building. By constructing a new office that is 38 percent larger than Thelemann’s former office, the local dentist and her husband, Walter Zuniga, have stepped away from the limitations of operating in a rented, confined downtown space.
