INDEPENDENT Talk of the town ‘Speechies’ pile up the honors BY DAVID SCHUELLER dschueller@swpub.com
G e t a g r oup o f s p e e c h team students — affectionately known to each other as speechies — together to talk about speech, and a couple things become clear. They are enthusiastic about speech, and they have no problem telling you why. This year, well into the season, the team has even more about which to talk, in addition to describing a fun, tightknit atmosphere that develops on the team and with speechies of other schools. The Jordan speech team won first place in four meets in a row this year. “This is a first for us to have four first places in a row, head coach Amy Peters said. Speech might sound like eit her a fea red subject i n school or a time to zone out a talking head. But watching a high school competitive speech is more like sitting in for parts of great moments in movies or theater. They can be entertaining, moving or even educational, and students compete in categories like great speeches, creative expression, informative, humorous and others.

Rolling up in style, proud to help out a friend JosÊ Perez Jr. has been a friend and important member of high school’s multicultural club BY DAVID SCHUELLER dschueller@swpub.com
JosĂŠ Perez Jr. can be seen driving to Jordan High School in an eye-catching red Chevy Camaro. But look past the stylized window treatment bearing his last name, and you might notice that he often has a passenger. For at least a year, Perez has been going out of his way to pick up friend and fellow high school senior Jorge Heradia. The two also carpool to attend vocational school in Chaska. Having Perez there
as a friend has been a factor in Heradia staying on track at school while balancing school with a job as a manager at McDonald’s. “I’d pick him up from his house and get here and get him here on time, Perez said last week at the high school. Heradia said Perez has been there for him for years. They met in eighth grade. Now, Perez drives up to his home and makes sure he doesn’t sleep too long after working late.
