INDEPENDENT LIBRARY

Scott County blows away city with proposal Most libraries didn’t get offer like this: Jordan gets extra $500,000 BY MATHIAS BADEN AND SHANNON FIECKE editor@jordannews.com, sfiecke@swpub.com

Scott County will put $ 500,000 toward Jordan’s $1.5 million library project, if the city fi nances with the county.

Jordan City Councilmember Jeremy Goebel was blown away by the county’s proposal for a major mixed-use development during a council work session last Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Jordan Government Center, and by the looks of the rest of the councilmembers in at-

tendance – who by consensus asked to put moving forward with the county’s proposal on the next council agenda – the deal is close to done. “We’d be fools not to do this,” Goebel said early on during the work session.

On Tuesday, the Scott County Board approved a memorandum of understanding on a $9.5 million to $11.4 million project that would include Jordan’s new library, as well as senior housing and possibly a medical clinic and pharmacy, city and county officials said. Council approval of the MOU, as well as a joint powers agreement between the two governments, could come soon.

The wild card is a group of residents who want the library kept downtown. The county offered a package that would have the city repaying a $1 million loan to build a new library near the intersection of Seville Drive and Creek Lane – in the Triangle Business District, rather than downtown.

Mayor charged after reaching handshake deal with Ballard

ENGINES ON PARADE

BY MATHIAS BADEN editor@jordannews.com

The mayor and the funeral home director came to a handshake agreement in the courtroom this week. Then, the mayor was charged with a misdemeanor disorderly conduct. On Monday, after Mark Ballard of Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home and Ref lections Crematory agreed to dismiss his petition for a restraining order against Mayor Pete Ewals, the two parties shook hands across the courtroom aisle. Ewals is to stay off of Ballard’s property – a request to which Ewals’ attorney, Mark Halberg, said Ballard has a right. In further regard to alleged disorderly conduct stemming from an incident that reportedly occurred at 1:11 a.m. July 15, Ewals is scheduled to appear in traffic court at the Scott County Government Center in Shakopee next month.
