Did You Know? Lactose intolerance occurs when an individual is unable to fully digest the milk sugar, or lactose, in dairy products. Also known as lactase deficiency, lactose intolerance is not typically dangerous but it can be very uncomfortable. Many people, in fact, have low levels of lactase, but most would not know, as there are no noticeable symptoms or signs. Those who do feel strange after consuming dairy and feel they might be lactose intolerant should know that symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps, bloating, and gas are some of the signs of lactose intolerance. These signs and symptoms typically appear within 30 minutes to two hours after consuming dairy. When a person is lactose intolerant, that's because the cells lining the small intestine are not producing lactase, which attaches to molecules in the food a person eats and breaks them into two simple sugars -- glucose and galactose -- which are then absorbed into the bloodstream. However, with insufficient lactase, food moves into the colon unprocessed, where it then interacts with normal intestinal bacteria, an interaction that often results in the aforementioned uncomfortable symptoms.

Recognizing Black Dog Syndrome Dogs living in shelters await the chance to be adopted by loving families. Black dogs in general tend to be harder to place because of people's misperceptions about them. These dogs are often the last to find homes, if they do at all. The problem is so common, adoption professionals have dubbed it "black dog syndrome."

A duck's quack doesn't echo, and no one knows why.

There are a few reasons people may pass up on owning a black dog. * Dog breeds, such as dobermans and rottweilers, are dark in color. People may assume that all black dogs tend to be aggressive or protective. In fact, it is often the way a dog is raised that dictates its disposition, regardless of the dog's color or breed. * Another possible explanation for black dog syndrome is that black dogs do not photograph well. When individuals search print advertisements for shelter dogs or browse online placement sites, black dogs do not show up as expressive as lighter -colored ones. * Because they do not show up well in film and in photos, Hollywood often chooses lighter dogs over black dogs. This can make people believe that black dogs are unpopular. * Black dogs have often been condemned in folklore. People may have visions of lurking, hulking black dogs preying on livestock or haunting shadowy corners. Like black cats, black dogs can seem ominous.

* Black is a depressive color, and individuals may transfer their thoughts of the color onto the animal. * Human nature is to look at bright, sparkly things. A light dog next to a black dog may appear more attractive. * In warmer climates or sporting competitions, black dogs tend to overheat faster than lighter counterparts. Individuals who are active may ignore a black dog for this reason. There are people who do not believe in black dog syndrome. Because black and brown tend to be dominant colors in many breeds and because many shelter dogs are mixes of breeds, it makes some sense that there are more black dogs in shelters for this reason alone. Others say that Labradors, which are often black, are the most popular breed, and this is another reason for the abundance of black dogs in shelters. However, shelter workers contradict that black dogs often are the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. People are urged to remember that coat color does not dictate the temperament of a dog. Individuals shopping around for a new pet should look carefully at all the dogs available because black dogs are often overlooked. Who knows, an ebony pup may become a child or adult's new best friend.

Solutions & Substitutions By: Reena Nerbas Hi Reena, I was asking a clerk in our local store, about cola for cooking, and he had never heard of it. Where can I find it? Secondly, what I have found most excellent for mosquito bites is to put a teeny dab of toothpaste on the bite, and you can forget all about it. It works like a charm, believe me. And, for burns, to hands, or fingers, or whatever, when we are working around the kitchen, I always put my finger(s) under cold water for a minute, then dab that with a towel, to get most of the water off, and then I put on some lavender oil (available in all health stores). Years ago, two men were working in some kind of lab, and one of them burnt his hand, and automatically pulled his hand away, and inadvertently put it into a bowl of lavender oil. It healed right away, with no scarring, or anything. I am loving your book! Sincerely, Gordon Hi Gordon, Thank-you for the great solutions! With regards to cola, this refers to; No Name, Pepsi, Coca Cola, Diet Cola etc. The combination of carbonic, citric and phosphoric acids can be used for making; chili, BBQ sauce, brownies, and cooking/marinating meat. Hi Reena, We moved into a new home. I would like to clean the basement floor. It is untreated, that is there is no sealant on it. What cleaning solution should I use on it? Darlene Dear Darlene, Assuming that your basement floor is concrete; mix one half cup bleach, one quarter cup baking soda, 2 tbsp. borax and 8 cups warm water. Let sit for 10 mins. Scrub with club soda. If you are opposed to bleach, you can substitute the same amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide. When the floor is clean, seal. Hi Reena, Heard you on the radio today but I could not get through before the show ended. Root weevil (strawberry I think) have gotten worse inside our house over the years, I kill

about 50-100 a day. We are trying to reduce outside foliage and plan to replace flooring (mostly carpet) in future. Have kids and the weevils are in all rooms, I would like some suggestions if possible. House is well sealed and the attached garage not too bad. I am looking for a solution for inside if possible as now that they (weevils) are inside, it seems they are here to stay. Thanks in advance. David Dear David, Strawberry root weevils look like large wood ticks. A single female can lay up to 400 eggs, and this challenge needs immediate attention as they sometimes wander into houses by mistake as accidental invaders. Household aerosol insecticides are not very effective for controlling weevils, your best bet is to vacuum them up as soon as you see them. Secure a plastic bag over the vacuum nozzle when not in use so that weevils do not escape. If problem persists, contact an exterminator. Fabulous Tips of the Week: · Secure a button permanently with dental floss; it is much stronger than thread and perfect for repairs to outdoor items. Because dental floss is resilient but fine, it is an ideal replacement for thread when you are repairing an umbrella, tent or rucksack. · Keep rabbits from eating your garden by scaring them. Fill mason jars three quarter full with water; add a drop of dish soap to each jar. Line jars along garden 1-2 feet apart and place on top of foil pie plates. The water reflects the sun off the jar and the foil. The dish soap changes the surface tension of the water so that mosquitoes cannot lay eggs. Did You Know? A Rutgers university study found that flowers can create feelings of instant happiness. With this in mind, using flowers around the home when entertaining can immediately create a sense of warmth and welcome when guests arrive. It can also set the mood for the event. Go beyond the flower centerpiece on the dining room table. Incorporate flowers into other decorating as well, and don't forget to add a small vase of flowers in the bathroom. Send guests home with a potted plant as a way of saying thanks for attending the function.
