H
ow often have you turned to a friend and said, “I just ate the best cheeseburger ever” or “Wow, that place has super customer service”? Now you don’t have to rely on word-ofmouth recommendations to find out who is the best. For the second consecutive year, the Leader er readers have spoken. The first Readers’ ers’ Choice survey took place in 2006. After that, there was an 11-year hiatus before efore it returned in 2017. This special issue turns the spotlight on the winnerss of the 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards.. The Leader received eceived more than 7,500 nominations in n 65 categories. Culver’s earned the most st honors. The local restaurant was voted oted the winner in the following nine categories: ategories: Favorite Bowl of Soup, Favorite rite Customer Service, Favorite Employer, yer, Favorite Fast Food, Fastest Drive-Thru Thru Service, Favorite French Fries, Favorite Frozen Treat, Favorite Hamburger urger Place and Favorite Sandwich. It’s not surprising prising Culver’s earned top honors nors with voter comments such as these: “I love the fresh resh ingredients and it’s always ways hot.” “I never leave ve disappointed. The fries ries and burgers are the e best and there’s always ways room for a delielicious frozen cusstard treat.” “They make custard mixers so fast. I love it.” It’s a good year for C u lve r ’s .
Recently the business was one of three named a Great Place to Work in McLeod County. Congratulations also goes to the 35 businesses that were voted winners in their categories in 2017 and then went on and repeated the feat this year. It’s not easy to be consistent, but these businesses earned kudos for meeting and exceeding their customers’ expectations. In an interesting twist, the McLeod County Fair and the HutchinHutchin son Jaycee Water Carnival f lipped positions this year in the Favorite Celebration/Festival category. Last year, the Water Carnival took the top prize, with the County Fair earning an honorable mention. This year, it’s the reverse. No mat ter which
one is the winner both events put Hutchinson on the map. The McLeod County Fair consistently attracts about 32,000 people during its five-day run. This year marked the 144th annual County Fair, while the Water Carnival observed its 76th annual festival in June. While many summer festivals have cut back on the number of days or activities, the Water Carnival has grown. This year, volunteers coordinated eight days of events, which is no small feat. Year after year, the festival’s largest draw is the Grande Day Parade on Father’s Day. It traditionally brings thousands of people to town. A lt hou g h t h e r e isn’t a category for recognizing the city of Hutchinson, it deserves a round of applause because t wo of its prop erties — the Hutchinson Aquatic Center and Elks Park —
were winners. The Aquatic Center was named in the Favorite Family Fun Spot category and Elks Park earned kudos in the Favorite Park category. Visitors remark on the beauty of the city, and much of that credit goes to city employees and volunteers who do a first-class job keeping everything neat and tidy. The State Theatre, Hutchinson’s artdeco landmark, earned Favorite Date Place in 2006, 2017 and 22018. The downtown movie palace has been part of Hutchinson’s cityscape since it cit opened Dec. 28, 1937. The first film it T showed was “True Confession” starring Confe Fred MacMurray, Carol Carole Lombard and John Barrymore. Adult admission was 35 cents and children w were charged 10 cents. The building was state of the art for its time and included the very latest — central air-conditioning. air-conditioni Like the State Theatre, Theatre St. Anastasia’s Fall Festival chicken dinner is a voter di favorite. It was named th the winner in the Favorite Chicken Dinn Dinner category in 2006, 2017 and 2018. The St. Anastasia Fall Festival chicken dinner was named the winner in the Favorite Church Dinner category. It takes many hands to produce the awardwinning chicken dinner.
