Red Wing Our Scenic Rivertown A Top Historic Destination in the World

In 2008, National Geographic conducted a survey on historical travel destinations for their Traveler magazine. 280 travel experts set out to rate cities all over the world on: • Environmental and ecological quality • Social and cultural integrity • Condition of historic buildings and archaeological sites • Aesthetic appeal • Quality of tourism management, and • Outlook for the future The product of the survey was a list of 109 top historic destinations in the world. And Red Wing was listed in the Top 25. Better yet, we ranked number 23. We beat out other U.S. historical hotspots such as Savannah, GA (No. 34) and Philadelphia, PA (No. 66), and even international destinations such as Bologna, Italy (No. 39), Istanbul, Turkey (No. 55), and Olympia, Greece (No. 61). How did we do it? We’re proud of our history and have a strong commitment for historic preservation, sustainability and revitalization – all of which also contributed to our placement on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations list in 2008.

Discover Our History

Founded on the site of the Mdewakanton Dakota Indian village, our scenic rivertown was named after the tribe’s succession of chiefs, all of whom were known as “Red Wing” to the white settlers that first visited the area starting in 1837. Red Wing was officially established as a town in 1857. With its advantageous proximity to the river, it quickly became a thriving port city boasting the largest primary wheat market in the world by 1873. A whopping 2,418,622 bushels of wheat shipped from Red Wing in 1874 alone. Red Wing’s surrounding limestone bluffs and hills made the city a lime-making and stone quarrying hub from 1870 to 1910. 1877 marked the establishment of Red Wing Stoneware Company that put Red Wing on the map for its quality, handcrafted (and handpainted) stoneware and pottery. Over the next several decades, pottery marked an important transition between industry and artistry.

Take In the Arts & Entertainment Though Red Wing got its start in industry, it’s long-since celebrated its artistry as well. The turn of the century meant the establishment of the nation’s first municipally-owned

performing arts theatre, the T.B. Sheldon Theatre, which still today showcases live performing arts to audiences year-round. Like pottery, also bridging the gap between the industry and craftsmanship was Red Wing Shoes, established in 1905, which, this year, celebrates 110 years of beautifullyhandcrafted workboot production. While it’s safe to say pottery and shoes are staples of Red Wing, today we now offer a plethora of exhibits, festivals, and events that celebrate art and entertainment throughout the year both indoors and out.

The Great Outdoors Nestled in the scenic Mississippi River Valley, Red Wing’s been a destination for outdoor enthusiasts since the Mdewakanton tribe dwelled at the edge of Barn Bluff in the early 1800s. With the rolling bluffs surrounding the city and the mighty Mississippi on our northern border, we have ample opportunity for outdoor activity throughout every season. Explore Mother Nature’s splendor with our parks, gardens, trails, slopes, and courses. Whether you’re into hiking, biking, golfing or “frolfing,” our city can accommodate. We have great historic walking tours to combine both outdoor activity and history.

Shop ‘Til You Drop Lighten your wallet with the fabulous shopping available in Red Wing. We have many shopping options for everyone of all ages and tastes ranging from Scandinavian gifts to unique clothing to home décor and hard-to-find antiques. Speaking of antiques, in 2012, Mike Wolfe, star of the History Channel’s antique-hunting show American Pickers, named Red Wing as one of his Top 10 favorite cities for antique shopping in the entire country (according to USA Today Travel). We also can’t forget to mention that our historic downtown district – which is filled with shopping opportunities – was named the first Main Street community in the state by the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota in 2010.

Find Your Good Night’s Rest With everything we have to offer here in our scenic rivertown, we’re certain you can’t experience it all in just one day – we hope you plan to stay! We have hotels, motels, and historic bed & breakfasts to accommodate any type of stay, whether it be business travel, a family trip, or a romantic getaway. Lodging is also part of our history, with the St. James Hotel opening their doors in 1875.

Like the rest of Red Wing, the St. James works hard to preserve its unique historic aesthetic down to naming many of their rooms after steam boats that traversed the river throughout its tenure. Not to mention, their culinary reputation is second to none.

Eat, Drink, & Be Merry Whether you’re simply hungry or a bonafied “foodie” in search for fine cuisine, we can serve you. We’ve got fast food, fine dining, chain restaurants, and even mom and pop diners with home-style cooking. From romantic candlelit dinners to casual dining served family-style, you can fill your forks in Red Wing.

Around the Area While we of course have plenty to see, eat, shop for, and explore here in Red Wing, we can’t deny the rest of the scenic river valley has a lot to offer as well. Drive along the banks of the Mississippi – on either side – to explore the other rivertowns in the area such as Lake City, Pepin, and Wabasha. Find unique shopping and dining establishments, cozy lodging, tourist attractions and more. Plan a day to explore!

Full-Service Community If you asked twenty of our residents, “Why should I visit Red Wing?”, you’d probably get twenty different answers. That’s because we have so much to offer. We’re not only a great town to visit, we are a great hometown as well. We have loyal residents, wonderful education, dedicated community organizations, and a collective dedication to continued economic growth. It doesn’t matter if you’re just here for a visit or lucky enough to call this scenic rivertown “home,” Red Wing is sure to exceed your expectations. You may come for the history, but you’ll stay for the community. We look forward to having you here!

at the Red Wing Shoe Museum. Located inside the flagship Red Wing Shoe Store in the downtown district, guests can find hands-on exhibits, historical artifacts, photos, and more.

Literally the biggest attraction here, of course, is the world’s largest boot – a Red Wing Shoe® leather work boot standing over 20 feet tall at size 638 1/2! By simply standing near it, you can see that it was made with the same quality and craftsmanship as the 2.2 million other workboots that Red Wing Shoes produces each year. Red Wing Shoes has been iconic in the work boot industry for more than a century. A local shoe merchant named Charles Beckman saw a necessity for industrial-grade footwear so he and fourteen investors started Red Wing Shoes in 1905 to produce shoes that were not only durable for the harshest of working conditions, but comfortable as well. The standard of excellence of their product changed the market, and Red Wing Shoes continues this tradition still today as their boots are sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. If you have close-toed shoes on your feet, you can take a tour of the factory and witness how the shoes are made. AN AMERICAN TRADITION FOR OVER A CENTURY | Est. 1877

Arts & Entertainmen

While most of the art pottery offered was initially solid colors, Red Wing Potteries was the only company at the time producing hand-painted pottery pieces in the country. More than 30 dinnerware lines and 104 patterns were created between 1935 and 1967; many of which were decorated by hand giving Red Wing Potteries a creative, “Americanized” edge on a predominantly English-driven pottery market. Due to its high quality and uniquely decorated yet casual flair,

Iconic

Red Wing Pottery

It can be indisputably stated that one of our city’s biggest claims to fame is pottery and stoneware.

An art form in its creation and iconic in its appearance, Red Wing Pottery and Stoneware has undoubtedly helped put Red Wing ‘on the map.’ Curious how it all started? Read on... In 1861, a German immigrant named John Paul intended to farm the land around Red Wing and instead discovered that the land in the bluffs was rich with clay. Coincidentally, he was a potter by trade, and utilized this newly-found clay to create the first pieces of what would later be known as Red Wing Pottery and Stoneware. After John Paul and a few other recreational potters in the area came and went,

Red Wing Stoneware Company was officially established in 1877. As stoneware was great at keeping cold things cold and hot things hot, the original produced pieces included jugs and crocks with utilitarian uses for area farmers and workers – such as food and beverage storage. Ceramic sewer pipes were also created during the Industrial Revolution. In 1906, the existing businesses in the popular stoneware market combined to create Red Wing Union Stoneware Company. It wasn’t until the invention and popularity of the refrigerator – which diminished the demand for stoneware – that

The direction of stoneware turned artistic. In the late 1920s, art pottery emerged and added flower pots, vases, bowls, sculptures, commemoratives, dinnerware and more to the product lines offered. Because of the new burst of pottery products, yet another name change – Red Wing Potteries – occurred in 1936.

Red Wing pottery pieces became staples in the kitchens and dining rooms of the American homemaker.

With over a million pieces produced each year, along with ample amounts of new products and décor, it also became a collectible ware. One still collected and commemorated today.

By 1967, Red Wing Pottery was one of the only remaining potteries in the United States that still made large volumes of dinnerware. Cheaper imports from around the world had driven the market to where they could no longer compete. A factory strike ultimately closed down production. The business again retooled and shifted its focus to retail sales of pottery and other high-end goods. In 1984, with the purchase of the technical records, Red Wing Stoneware Company was reborn. In 1996, Red Wing Pottery also began producing again. It wasn’t until just recently in 2013, that both companies were purchased and combined to continue to operate as one company, Red Wing Stoneware and Pottery. Today, one can purchase Red Wing Stoneware and Pottery pieces as they continue to be

Created with the same technique, artistry, and passion as they were more than a century ago. With two retail and production locations offered in town, we invite our visitors to witness an American tradition for over a century as Red Wing Stoneware and Pottery carries on the iconic Red Wing legacy. From land to water, we pride ourselves in providing locals and tourists alike plenty of opportunities to take in the great outdoors via the river, the trails, the bluffs, horseback, or the golf course. 19

Boating

Our city isn’t called a rivertown for nothing, we provide several miles of shoreline to the mighty Mississippi. Boaters come from all over to dock their boats in Red Wing as many of our city’s dining, lodging, and attractions are just a short distance away. As a rivertown, we provide hundreds of slips for both transient boaters and seasonal renters. City-run Ole Miss Marina offers two options for docking: Bay Point Park marina offers 128 slips and is close to Old West Main Street. Colvill marina has 156 slips and is adjacent to Colvill Park with a large playground and picnic area perfect for families. Another option for visitors is the privately-owned Red Wing Marina; known for their caboose, and is conveniently the closest marina to downtown. Don’t own a boat? No problem. Both Sail Pepin and Gem Sailing can get you on the river. (For more info on marinas, see directory on pg. 22. For info on charters, see directory on pg. 43)

Canoeing/Kayaking

Boaters aren’t the only ones who can enjoy the river. Grab your paddles and canoe or kayak to take in the Mississippi at a slower pace. Don’t have the equipment? Welch Mill Canoeing, Tubing, and Kayaking or Broken Paddle Guiding can help outfit you for your next float on the river.

Fishing

We all know that Minnesota is great for fishing what with its 10,000 lakes. River fishing is just as good, if not better, and anglers come from miles away to fish the Upper Mississippi in the Red Wing area. Home to more than 100 species of fish, fishermen can expect to net walleye, sauger, largemouth and small-mouth bass, channel catfish, northern pike, bluegill, crappies, and more out of the mighty Mississippi. Care to test your angling skills? Call Marty Hahn with Hahn’s Fishing Guide Service to take you out on the river in search of your trophy fish or simply family fun. All equipment is provided and all skill-levels invited! (For more info on Hahn’s Fishing, see directory on pg. 22)

Marvel at our

Flowers

If you’ve walked the streets of Red Wing from mid-May through September, you’ve undoubtedly noticed the hanging adornments on the light poles: our flower baskets.

For over 20 years, Red Wing has been displaying these baskets from the light poles thanks to local volunteers and nurseries. What started as only 18 baskets has now grown to include over 150 baskets lusciously full of colorful flowers and maintained to perfection. Our baskets have enhanced our city annually and are a true testament to nature’s beauty. These baskets can be found in the downtown district and other shopping and park areas throughout Red Wing. Indisputably the pride of our city’s green thumb, these baskets are grown and created every year by Sargent’s Nursery and Hallstrom’s Florist & Greenhouse and are filled with marigolds, petunias, verbenas, and more. Have a green thumb yourself? The Red Wing Arts Association hosts a garden tour of the city’s most beautiful and unique gardens and other events every year in the summer.

The Cannon Valley Trail runs 19.7 miles from Red Wing to Cannon Falls and attracts close to 100,000 visitors annually. The trail includes natural and cultural resources, scenic view sheds, rest areas, hiking, biking, inline skating, and cross-country skiing. Wheel Pass required.

Barn Bluff What better way to take in the city than from above? A city statue in itself, this bluff is a famous landmark not only in Red Wing but along the entire upper Mississippi as well.

Several trail options are available year-round for different hiking skill levels: • Difficult: North Trail (Main Park Access to West Scenic Overlook) • Moderate: Prairie Trail (reached first by North or South Trail and runs along the summit of the bluff between the East and West Overlooks) • Moderate: Midland Trail (runs parallel with the South Trail) • Easy/Moderate: South Trail (Main Park Access to Prairie Trail)

Hikers can also check out Carlson Lime Kiln, a kiln used to transform the bluff’s raw limestone for use in mortar or plaster from 1870 to 1908. Another point of interest is the Kiwanis Stairway, and 450-step concrete stairway created in 1929 to allow easier access to the top of the bluff. The climb is a steady one, regardless of trail. The longest hike is 2.27 miles (round trip) from the Main Park Access to the East and West Scenic Overlooks via the North Trail.

Memorial Park Another scenic overlook option is Memorial Park on Sorin’s Bluff. With its scenic Skyline Drive, visitors can drive to the top of the bluff to catch a spectacular view of the city and to explore.

Like Barn Bluff, Sorin’s Bluff was originally a hub for limestone, but after the quarrying ended, 93 acres were purchased at the summit to create Memorial Park and the city dedicated the park in 1929. Since then, the city continues to secure and develop even more land for the reserve. Throughout the park, visitors can find gorgeous views of the city, as well as many hiking and biking trails, picnic tables, charcoal grills, and a 9-hole disc golf course at the top of the bluff. Several campfire rings are also available to accommodate groups and gatherings.

In recent years, informational kiosks were installed to educate visitors about the geology, history, and wildlife of the bluff as well as historical tidbits about the city of Red Wing.

From Plum Street (Hwy 58), travel east on W 7th Street. Cross Bluff St. to continue on E 7th Street. Pass by the entrance to Memorial Park then take a left onto Nymphara Ln. Take your first left to cross under Hwy 61 into Colvill Park (510 Nymphara Lane).

The roadway to the top is easily accessible spring through late fall, weather-permitting in the winter, and open daily until 10:30pm.

Soaring Wildlife

Eagles populate the Mississippi River Valley all year-round, as the waterfront and tree-filled shorelines create the perfect place to feed and rest. With the river refusing to freeze over in the winter, even more eagles migrate here to take advantage of the open water. One can find them roosting in trees along the river January–March.

Red Wing Farmers’ Market

Only in Red Wing can you find a farmers’ market going on almost every day of the year. Our local farmers, gardeners, and artisans come together to sell their wares regularly - anything from fruits and vegetables to jams and baked goods made from homegrown ingredients to soaps created from scratch. In the summer, find trucks parked outside of City Hall (on 4th and Bush) during the week. On Saturdays, the Farmers’ Market sets up shop down by the historic depot. It is a much larger event more vendors, live music, and activities for kids. When winter comes, the market moves inside to Sargent’s Nursery.

River cruising via paddleboat is an American tradition from the Victorian era that the Mississippi River still embraces today. Witness the grandeur of large paddleboats such as the American Queen and the Queen of the Mississippi as they dock at Levee Park periodically throughout the summer. Want to cruise the river yourself? Climb aboard Pearl of the Lake, the Lake Pepin paddleboat and enjoy one of its daily sightseeing tours.

Candlelight Victorian Inn Bed & Breakfast

Bed & Breakfasts

Red Wing has some of the most unique and historic (and beautifully restored) B&Bs around. Each of them boast their own special ambiance and décor, and most come listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Round Barn Farm B&B&B (“Bed & Breakfast & Bread”) was built from an 1861 design and is located just minutes outside of Red Wing. Stay here for an old-fashioned country ambiance and home-baked blue ribbon hearth bread. The Candlelight Inn is a Victorian B&B both in architecture and décor and was originally built by the manager of the Red Wing Stoneware Company in 1877.

The Moondance Inn is a 6,000 sq.ft. stone B&B with antique furnishings and large rooms. The three-floor house was originally built in 1874 by Dr. A.B. Hawley, a well-known Red Wing doctor. The Pratt-Taber Inn comes with an elegant Italianate design. Built in 1876, this B&B received the Red Wing Heritage Preservation Award in 2008 for its “new energy” restoration. The Golden Lantern Inn was constructed in 1932-34 by J.R. Sweazy, president of the Red Wing Shoe Company. With carved wood, exquisite tile, and marble throughout the house, this B&B has a distinct Art Deco feel. (For B&B info, see directory on pg. 36.)

The Historic

St. James Hotel

In the late 1800s, Red Wing was a popular port city and the wheattrading center of the world with a need for first-class lodging. A group of 11 prominent businessmen capitalized on this need and opened the St. James Hotel on Thanksgiving day in 1875.

A four-story, Italianate structure was erected with grandeur and luxury in mind.

Even for that time, the hotel boasted modern features, on-site amenities, and a fantastic culinary reputation. Still today, almost 140 years later and now owned by the Red Wing Shoe Company, the prides of the St. James remain the same. Offering 67 guest rooms – all with unique names and décor – the St. James still offers modern features such as wifi, cable, and whirlpools, as well as the extra comforts of high quality mattresses, handmade quilts, and plush, warm robes. The on-site amenities are seemingly endless, giving guests little reason to ever leave the property. The hotel offers 14 meeting spaces for the business travelers, and banquet and ballroom spaces for events and weddings. Guests (and visitors) can also browse the St. James Shopping Court comprised of

The Levee, Marita’s, and Vestiges, Ltd.,

all of which offer shoppers unique clothing, home décor, gifts, and more. Also included

is Refined Skin Medi-Spa which offers spa treatments and services to guests. And

last, but not least, Clara’s is the on-site coffee shop of the St. James.

The reputation of the St. James for excellent cuisine lives on in three on-site restaurants:

Jimmy’s, the fifth-floor lounge; The Veranda, home to the Hoopskirt Bar and Porch & Patio

with outdoor seating; and The Port, serving creative culinary choices with an award-winning wine selection in the cellar. Even if you’re just in town for the day, make sure you include a visit to the St. James Hotel in your plans.

Its preservation of history is apparent simply in the details of the hotel lobby. And if you choose to become a guest, the St. James Hotel offers an escape you won’t soon forget. (For St. James Shopping Court info, see directory on pg. 28. For more St. James Hotel info, see directory on pg. 36)

During your stay in Red Wing, we encourage travel outside of our scenic rivertown as the Mississippi Bluffs deserve to be explored! Scenic drives are just waiting to be taken on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides of the river with the rolling bluffs providing the perfect backdrop. Travel south of Red Wing by car via Highway 61 – or even by boat – and you will find yourself in beautiful Lake City. Located on the banks of Lake Pepin, exploration of the lake is an encouraged past time. Visitors can sail the lake with Sail Lake Pepin or GEM Sailing, or take it in via paddleboat by climbing aboard the Pearl of the Lake.

Further south on Hwy 61 lands you in the rivertown of Wabasha, where you can find the National Eagle Center and find out why the upper Mississippi is a destination for our national bird. Once in Wabasha, take Cty 25 across the bridge over the Nelson, WI to head north on the Great River Rd. (Cty 35). Take advantage of the view of the river from the Wisconsin side. Enjoy the quaint towns along the river as you make your way back to Hager City, WI, where you simply take Hwy 63 west to cross the bridge back into Red Wing. (Don’t forget to stop at Harbor Bar before leaving Wisconsin!) (For attractions around the area, see directory on pg.43. For Harbor Bar info, see directory on pg. 38.)
