ames Naismith is credited with the invention of the game of basketball. Walter Camp pioneered the sport of football from its origins of rugby. The history of golf is a bit murkier. A prevailing sentiment is that golf developed in The Netherlands during the Middle Ages, however, it didn’t gain international popularity until the late 19th century, when it spread
THE RYDER CUP DATES BACK TO THE 1920S into the rest of the United Kingdom and then the British Empire and the United States. The origins of the Ryder Cup have better documentation. Sylvanus P. Jermain, president of Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, was the first to present the concept of an international golf match, in 1921. The first unofficial matches took place at Gleneagle, Scotland, later that year. The British easily won 10 1/2 to 4 1/2.
That’s where Englishman Samuel Ryder stepped in. A seed business owner, a newfound lover of the game, Ryder was so concerned about the professionals’ lack of pay, he put money down, allowing golfers to emigrate to America for better pay and a degree of respect missing at home. Along with Walter Hagen, Ryder laid out the groundwork for the first Ryder Cup in 1927. The Selection Committee for the U.S. Team convened on April 5,
1927, in Chicago, and announced that it would select American-bred and American-developed players. The competition at Worcester (Mass.) Country Club featured four foursomes and eight singles matches. The Americans won nine matches, with only two defeats and one halve, for a 9 1/2 to 2 1/2 victory. With the outbreak of World War II, the Ryder Cup was suspended from 1939-45. Ryder Cup to 5 ®

The only other interruption came in 2001 with the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. The tournament was pushed back a year, with all future competitions in even-numbered years. The United States continued its dominance following, winning 18 of the next 19 competitions from 1947 to 1983. In the 1970s, approached by Jack Nicklaus, the PGA of Great Britain agreed to level the playing field, widening the selection process to include players from continental Europe in addition to the British Isles. Beginning in 1985, Europe has won 11 of the last 15 Ryder Cup Tournaments, including 2010 (Newport, Wales), 2012 (Medinah, Ill.), and 2014 (Perthshire, Scotland). The last U.S. victory came in 2008 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

Who is the youngest golfer to play in the Ryder Cup?
Which U.S. golfer owns the most points won in Ryder Cup play?
Phil Mickelson. “Lefty” has played in 10 consecutive tournaments, posting a 1619-6 record in 41 career matches.
Sergio Garcia. At 19 years, 258 days, the Spaniard beat out Sir Nick Faldo by 166 days.
Which U.S. golfer is undefeated in doubles with two different partners?
Who is the oldest golfer to play in the Ryder Cup?
Billy Casper. An eight-year veteran, competing between 1961 and 1975, Casper earned 23 1/2 points with 20 victories, 10 losses and seven halves. Sir Nick Faldo leads all golfers with 25 points.
Arnold Palmer. He won all five matches with Gardiner Dickinson and all three matches with Billy Casper.
Raymond Floyd. At 51 years old, Floyd played for the U.S. team in 1993.
FORMAT CHANGE From the beginning of the series through 1959, the Ryder Cup competition was comprised of four foursome (alternate shot) matches on one day and eight singles matches on the other day, each of 36 holes. The format was changed in 1961 to provide four 18-hole foursome matches the morning of the first day, four more foursomes that afternoon, eight 18-hole singles the morning of the second day and eight more singles that afternoon. One point was at stake in each match, so the total number of points was doubled to 24. In 1963, four-ball (better-ball) matches were added for the first time, boosting the total number of points available to 32. In 1979, when the Great Britain and Ireland Team was expanded to include players from continental Europe, the format was revised to provide four four-ball and four foursome matches the first two days and 12 singles matches on the third day. The total points awarded were 28. This format will continue through the 2016 Ryder Cup. Ryder Cup to 6

BATTLE OF BROOKLINE Trailing 10-6 into the final day of competition in 1999 at Brookline Country Club in Massachusetts, the U.S. won eight of 12 matches, receiving a half-point in the final match from Justin Leonard to secure the largest Ryder Cup rally ever. It was Leonard’s 45-foot birdie on the 17th hole that sent the American team onto the green, upsetting many. Europe’s José María Olazábal eventually missed his 22-foot putt, securing the half-point for the Americans. It is widely regarded as one of the most impressive come-from-behind victories in recent sports history. It was also one of the final public appearances from U.S. golfer Payne Stewart, who died aboard a plane less than a month later.

RYDER CUP TEAM SELECTION
HOW ARE THE 12 PLAYERS CHOSEN FOR THE TEAMS? EUROPE, U.S. USE DIFFERENT METHODS By Eric Kraushar | scores@swpub.com
A
victory on the last day of July not only brought home the Wanamaker Trophy at the PGA Championships for Jimmy Walker, it also likely secured a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Twenty-ninth in the standings into the event, the win moved him all the way to No. 4, trailing just Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson. The selection of the 12-member U.S. and Europe teams for the Ryder Cup differ; both though weren’t finalized until after The Barclays on Aug. 28. For the United States, a points system places eight of the 12 members. Beginning March 8, 2015, points were given to players based on money earned at major events as well as World Golf Cup events and regular PGA tournaments. Previously, the points system ended in mid-August. The new timetable gives two additional weeks for players to earn Ryder Cup qualifying points. U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III will select three of his four Captain’s Picks after the conclusion of the BMW Championship, which is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, Sept. 11. His fourth pick will take
place Sunday evening after the TOUR Championship, Sept. 25. For Europe, the top four members on the Ryder Cup European points list qualify as well as the next five golfers, not previously selected from the first criteria, on the Ryder Cup World points list. Captain Darren Clarke chose (at his own discretion) the remaining three members the week of Aug. 29. As of Aug. 22, the top-eight pointgetters for the United States were: 1. Dustin Johnson 2. Jordan Spieth 3. Phil Mickelson 4. Jimmy Walker 5. Brooks Koepka 6. Brandt Snedeker 7. Zach Johnson 8. Patrick Reed Potential captain’s choices include Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler. As of Aug. 22, the top-nine point-getters for Europe were: 1. Rory McIlroy 2. Danny Willett 3. Henrik Stenson 4. Chris Wood 5. Andy Sullivan 6. Matthew Fitzpatrick 7. Rafa Cabrera-Bello 8. Soren Kjeldsen 9. Tyrrell Hatton Potential captain’s choices include Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer.

Dustin Johnson
Jordan Spieth
A two-time Ryder Cup participant (2010, 2012), Johnson is hoping three times is a charm – as in his third Ryder Cup appearance yields his first time on the winning side. The long-hitting Johnson has a 4-3 record in seven Ryder Cup matches and is a perfect 2-0 in singles play. There’s no denying that Johnson steps it up for the big events, evidenced by his two wins in World Golf Championships, two wins in FedExCup Playoffs tournaments and 10 top-10 finishes in majors dating back to 2009.
A virtual lock to make his second Ryder Cup team in as many tries, Spieth was one of the lone bright spots for the U.S. in an otherwise forgettable showing at Gleneagles in 2014, compiling an impressive rookie record of 2-0-1. Since then, Spieth has been a force on the world stage, winning two majors in 2015 – the Masters and U.S. Open – while finishing T4 in the Open Championship and second in the PGA Championship. He got off to a red-hot start when the calendar flipped to 2016 as well, winning the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

UNITED STATES
Phil Mickelson
Jimmy Walker
What can you say about Mickelson? No U.S. player has participated in more Ryder Cups than Lefty. If he makes the 2016 squad, it’ll mark his 11th straight showing in the biennial matches (16-19-6 over that time). Talk about longevity. Over that impressive stretch, however, Mickelson has only been a member of two winning teams. When and if the U.S. gets this thing turned around, the five-time major winner will deserve a lot of the credit. Mickelson is also a lock to be a future captain. But for now – even at age 46 when the matches begin – Mickelson is still very much a competitor.
Walker was the No. 4 qualifier for the 2014 Ryder Cup in Gleneagles, Scotland, where he got his first taste of the biennial matches. Walker, who won the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol for his first major triumph, compiled a 1-1-3 record in his Ryder Cup debut. He and Rickie Fowler were the only two U.S. players to compete in all five matches in the 2014 Ryder Cup. The duo were partners for the first four sessions, where they had three halved matches. Walker’s 2 1/2 points in the 2014 Ryder Cup tied him with Jordan Spieth for second-most on the U.S. team.

Rory McIlroy
Danny Willett
Boasts an abundance of Ryder Cup pedigree, having played in every edition since 2010, winning eight points from his 14 matches in the process, with a highlight coming at Gleneagles in 2014, when the Northern Irishman beat Rickie Fowler 5&4 in the Sunday Singles. He won his first Major in 2011 at the US Open where he broke records aplenty after shooting 16 under par. He doubled his tally at the 2012 US PGA Championship, before winning his other two Majors in a memorable 2014 season, when he lifted the Claret Jug at Hoylake before winning the US PGA Championship for a second time.
This has been a year to remember for Willett, thanks largely to his sensational maiden Major Championship victory at The Masters in April, which was his second win of the season following the Omega Dubai Desert Classic title he picked up in February. The Englishman was part of Darren Clarke’s victorious European team at the EURASIA CUP back in January, when he contributed two out of a possible three points. The 28 year old pushed Rory McIlory all the way in the 2015 Race to Dubai before eventually finishing second in the rankings.

Henrik Stenson The newly crowned Champion Golfer of the Year has played in three Ryder Cups, and has been on the winning side in two of those appearances – lately in 2014 and memorably on his debut in 2006, when he holed the winning putt at The K Club. His victory at the 2013 DP World Tour Championship, Dubai made him the first player to win both the Race to Dubai and the US PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup in the same season. The big Swede has won 11 European Tour titles, with two of those titles coming within the space of a month this year.
Remaining players? Ryder Cup participants were finalized after this edition. The full 12-member team for the United States won’t be chosen until the Sunday before the start of the Ryder Cup. Europe will have its squad by the final week of August. PHOTOS OF THE PLAYERS COURTESY OF THE PGA TOUR

THREE QUESTIONS WITH EUROPE CAPTAIN DARREN CLARKE
AN HONOR GREATER THAN ANY OTHER By Eric Kraushar | scores@swpub.com The Ryder Cup will always hold a special place in the heart of Europe captain Darren Clarke. Six weeks after the passing of his wife, Heather, in 2006, Clarke was selected to his fifth consecutive Ryder Cup, contributing three points in three matches. Clarke, urged by his wife to play, was embraced by members of the European and U.S. teams after he finished the tournament. In addition to playing in five Ryder Cups, Clarke, of Northern Ireland, was selected as a non-playing vice captain in 2010 and 2014. He was selected the European captain in February 2015 by a five-man panel, including the past three captains.
Darren Clarke, five-time Ryder Cup participant, is the 2016 captain for the Europe squad. Q: Europe has won the Ryder Cup the last three times, and six of the last seven. What has been the biggest
factor to those wins? What will it take to move the streak to four straight victories? A: One of the strongest characteristics of any European team is its togetherness. We always stand shoulder to shoulder with one another. Egos are parked at the door in the Ryder Cup and every player is treated exactly the same as any other. History and the law of averages says the tide will turn one day, but I definitely don’t want it to be on my watch. It’s not going to be easy because it never is wherever the match is played and particularly in America, so all I can do is ensure no visiting team has been better prepared for what lies ahead. Q: Having played in five Ryder Cups, what does it mean to these golfers to participate in this worldwide sporting event?
A: Next to winning majors, the Ryder Cup is something every professional golfer aspires to being part of. There is such a special buzz about it and I feel honored and privileged to have been a part of what it is today — team golf’s biggest and best event. Q: The Ryder Cup has had extra meaning to you since the loss to your wife, Heather, in 2006. When you were told last year that you were the European captain, what range of emotions played in your head and your heart? A: Being made Ryder Cup captain is the greatest honor the European Tour can bestow on any of its members so you can imagine how I felt when I got the call. I have embraced it totally and I will be the proudest man in Minnesota when I get to introduce the team at the opening ceremony.

THREE QUESTIONS WITH U.S. CAPTAIN DAVIS LOVE III
A SECOND SHOT AT A CAPTAIN’S VICTORY By Eric Kraushar | scores@swpub.com The captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup squad in 2012, Davis Love, a six-time Ryder Cup qualifier, watched as Team Europe rallied late Saturday and throughout Sunday in Medinah, Ill., defeating the U.S. 14 1/2-13 1/2. Three times U.S. players entered hole No. 17 with a chance to win; none did so. Europe matched the largest comeback in a Ryder Cup that year, rallying from a 10-6 deficit. Love, part of the greatest U.S. comeback in 1999 in Brookline, Mass., will get a second crack at leading his country to a Ryder Cup victory. Also a vice captain in 2010, the experience and poise of Love could be a calming factor for a U.S. program
Davis Love III, six-time Ryder Cup participant, is the 2016 captain for the U.S. squad, his second such selection in four years. attempting to re-establish itself as the team to beat every two years.
Q: Europe has won the last three Ryder Cup Tournaments, and eight of the last 10, what will it take to change the tide in favor of the Americans? A: As Captain (Darren) Clarke has said many times, they have been holing putts and had the momentum, so it’s as simple as just relaxing and playing our game and make a few putts. Easy to say, but hard to do in Ryder Cup pressure! Q: Having played in six Ryder Cups, totaling 26 matches, how does this tournament compare to the rest? What did the captain selection mean to you? A: As a player, Ryder Cup was one of my biggest goals, the ultimate test of nerves, and some of the best memories made and friendships built while be-
ing part of Team USA. Being selected captain again has been humbling, and exciting. To be a part of an energized new effort to build Team USA for the future has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Q: You’ve been to Hazeltine to view the course. What are your thoughts on the course? What will be the greatest challenges to the players? A: Great course for a major tournament; well-suited to match play; will be exciting for the fans. Great staff at Hazeltine under Chandler Whittington and a membership that is very supportive, giving us a home course advantage. A big course that should suit the U.S. team! Challenges will be the weather and greens that make it tough to get ball close to hole.

RYDER CUP TOURNAMENT PLAY
(NOT SO) DUMMY’S GUIDE TO THE RYDER CUP FOUR-BALLS, HALVES, CONCESSIONS, AND MORE
T
he Ryder Cup is played in evennumbered years between 12-member teams from the United States and Europe. It consists of five match-play sessions played over three days. The United States will have eight players determined by points, while the European Team will have nine — the first four coming from the European Points List and the next five from the World Points List. Europe has three Captain’s Picks, while the USA has four.
HOW IT WORKS Each of the first two days — Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1 — includes one four-match session of four-balls and one four-match session of foursomes. The final day — Sunday, Oct. 2 — is reserved for 12 singles matches. In four-balls, each member of a two-man team plays his own ball, so four balls are in play on every hole. Each team counts the lowest of its two scores on each hole, and the team whose player has the lowest score wins the hole. If the low scores are tied, the hole is halved. In foursomes, each two-man team plays one ball per hole with the players taking turns until each hole is complete. Players alternate hitting tee shots, with one leading off on odd-numbered holes, and the other hitting first on even-numbered holes. The team with the low score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, the hole is halved.
The Ryder Cup, the trophy presented to the winning team of the Ryder Cup every two years. In singles, each match features one player from each team. The player with the lower score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, the hole is halved. SCOREBOARD WATCHING Each match is worth one point, with matches ending in a draw worth 1/2
point to each side. The first team to reach 14-1/2 points wins the Ryder Cup. If the matches end in a 14-14 draw, the team holding the Ryder Cup retains it. The three days of the matches consist of 28 total matches, each of which is worth one point. There are no extra holes in Ryder Cup matches. Should the two sides be tied after 18
holes, each side earns a halve (1/2 point). Unlike stroke play, players don’t have to complete each hole in match play. If a player concedes a stroke — almost always a putt — to his opponent, the opponent picks up his ball, takes the score he would have made on the next stroke and moves on to the next hole.

HAZELTINE’S HISTORY
FROM FARMS TO FAME HAZELTINE NATIONAL GOLF CLUB OPENED FOR PLAY IN 1962 By Mollee Francisco
G
lancing out over the picturesque rolling green hills of Hazeltine National Golf Club, it is hard to believe that just over a half century ago, this land was nothing but farm fields as far as the eye could see. It was 1959 when famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones — in the area for the PGA Championship at the Minneapolis Golf Club — toured 725 acres in northern Chaska. Minnesota was in need of a new golf course to attract major golf events to the state and United States Golf Association President Totton Peavey Heffelfinger thought the Chaska site might have potential to host major championships while “providing members a pure golf experience.” Heffelfinger had previously hired another golf course architect — Robert Bruce Harris — to scour Hazeltine to 15 ®

HAZELTINE’S HISTORY
HAZELTINE continued from 14
the fringes of the Twin Cities for a site to develop into a championshipworthy golf course. He found a large, undeveloped lot along Lake Hazeltine. After seeing the site, Jones agreed there was potential and joined Heffelfinger as an investor and the designer of the 18-hole course. With a price tag of $1.15 million, nearly 1,400 acres were purchased with the intent of developing the golf course, as well as residential and commercial projects. The 18-hole, 7,628-yard, Par 72 Hazeltine National Golf Club was completed and opened for play in 1962. “The course was defined by big, undulating greens, long tees, multiple bunkers and many dogleg fairways,” wrote Rick Shefchik in his book “Hazeltine National: 50 Years.” Over the years, Jones tinkered with several of the holes, adapting them for championship play. His goal was to create a “long and demanding layout to test the best players in golf.” Course Superintendent Chris Tritabaugh said he “couldn’t believe” the size of Hazeltine when he first saw it. “Everything looks giant,” he said, now in his fourth year at the golf course. “It looks like it should have (major golf tournaments).” The Ryder Cup will be the largest golf event the course has hosted in its 54-year history. It comes five decades after Hazeltine landed its first tournament. In 1966, Hazeltine hosted the U.S. Women’s Open. The course has also played host to the U.S. Open, the U.S. Senior Open and the PGA Championship in addition to several amateur and collegiate events. Over the years, many of the changes made to Hazeltine have been made with the goal of attracting golf tournaments. Some of the biggest cosmetic changes in Hazeltine’s history happened in 2009. Immediately following the PGA
Championship, which Hazeltine hosted, the course closed down for a year while the original clubhouse was razed and rebuilt in a more modern style and the greens were revamped. Hosting major golf championships is a point of pride for Hazeltine and its members. Many of the club’s members are actively involved in attracting tournaments, planning for tournaments and hosting the events. That level of involvement makes it extra special when it comes time to show off the course for an event — especially an event as big as the Ryder Cup. “It’s like Christmas times 100,” said longtime member Jane Mackenzie.

HAZELTINE’S TOURNAMENTS
COURSE ABOUT TO MAKE HISTORY HAZELTINE WILL BE ONE OF TWO COURSES IN THE UNITED STATES THAT HAS HOSTED THE U.S. OPEN, THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP, THE U.S. SENIOR OPEN, THE U.S. WOMEN’S OPEN, THE U.S. AMATEUR AND THE RYDER CUP By Mollee Francisco
H
azeltine is about to make history. Once it hosts the 2016 Ryder Cup, Hazeltine National Golf Club will become one of only two courses in the United States to be able to say that it has hosted the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Senior Open, the U.S. Women’s Open, the U.S. Amateur and the Ryder Cup. Hazeltine landed its first tournament in 1966, just four years after it opened. Fifteen thousand people attended the U.S. Women’s Open at Hazeltine. Sandra Spuzich, a 29-year-old former elementary school teacher from Indiana, won the event by just one shot. In 1977, the U.S. Women’s Open returned to Hazeltine and Hollis Stacy claimed victory. Between U.S. Women’s Open events, attendees watched as Englishman Tony Jacklin won the 1970 U.S. Open at Hazeltine. It was the first time the U.S. Open had been played in Minnesota in four decades. Hazeltine landed the U.S. Senior Open in 1983. Billy Casper won the event, but he wasn’t the only newsmaker. After enduring criticism of the course’s design following the 1970 U.S. Open, changes to the course — including the debut of the now signature hole (Ryder Cup No. 7) — proved to be a success. Several major events were
now on the horizon — the first of which was the 1991 U.S. Open. Payne Stewart won the 1991 U.S. Open defeating Scott Simpson in a playoff. In 2002, following a series of amateur championships and collegiate tournaments, Hazeltine welcomed its first PGA Championship. The event was marked by Rich Beem’s shocking win, defeating a hot Tiger Woods to take the prize. The PGA returned to Hazeltine in 2009 and again Tiger Woods was denied victory — this time by South Korean golfer Y.E. Yang. Hazeltine hasn’t yet announced any major golf events following the 2016 Ryder Cup, but longtime member Jane Mackenzie isn’t worried. “There will definitely be more in the future,” she said.

HAZELTINE MEMBERS SPOTLIGHT
JANE MACKENZIE By Mollee Francisco Jane Mackenzie, of Chaska, is a long-time member of Hazeltine. She and her husband, Reed Mackenzie, have been active members in bringing tournaments to Hazeltine. Q: Why did you join Hazeltine? A: I joined as a single woman in 1971. I was living in Carver’s Green (across the street from Hazeltine). I played tennis back then, but decided to take up golf. I’ve been here ever since. Q: What makes Hazeltine special? A: First, it was like a kid. Now, it’s a very established adult. It’s gained a lot of respect. They’re always tinkering with it, trying to better it. Q: Which hole is your favorite? I live on No. 10 so No. 10 (Jane also met Reed on the 10th hole, adding to its allure.) A: How excited are Hazeltine members to host the 2016 Ryder Cup? People are really excited. It’s like Christmas times 100.

HAZELTINE MEMBERS SPOTLIGHT
JOHN & KATHY NORTON By Mollee Francisco John and Kathy Norton, of Chanhassen, have been members at Hazeltine for the past 13 years. The couple was drawn to the club because of its strong focus on the golf rather than social status. Q: Why did you join Hazeltine? John: I played in junior golf and my father was a corporate member. I knew I wanted to come back. Kathy: It was on his bucket list. I knew when we married that I’d either have to be a golfer or be a golf widow. Q: What makes Hazeltine special? Kathy: This is our cabin. Other people go up north, we go to Hazeltine. John: You only have so much spare time. Where do you want to spend it? We want to spend it here. Q: Which hole is your favorite? Kathy: I like Hazeltine’s signature hole — Ryder Cup No. 7. John: For me, it’s the one I get the most eagles on — Ryder Cup No. 16.

HAZELTINE COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
CHRIS TRITABAUGH By Mollee Francisco Chris Tritabaugh is in his fourth year of overseeing Hazeltine National Golf Club’s turf. The course superintendent leapt at the chance “to do what I do at the highest level in the state” when the Hazeltine opening came up. Now he’s putting his skills to the test on a huge stage with the 2016 Ryder Cup. “We’re kicking it up a whole other level,” he said. Q: How would you describe Hazeltine’s course to someone who has never golfed it? A: It’s big. Everything is giant. It looks like a course that should be hosting championships. Q: What are Hazeltine’s defining features? A: It’s a great membership — a membership that loves to play golf. Q: What are your hopes for the 2016 Ryder Cup? A: I hope it’s exciting. I hope memorable things happen to define it. Q: Which hole is your favorite? A: The 17th hole. There’s a tiny green and it’s a tough shot if the wind is blowing.
Chris Tritabaugh, Hazeltine course superintendent, said he and his crew will be paying a “tremendous attention to detail” as they prepare for the 2016 Ryder Cup. “It changes the way you look at the course — this is going to be on TV.”

THE ORIGINS OF THE ‘HAZELTINE’ NAME
TEACHABLE MOMENT WITH MISS HAZELTINE By Mark W. Olson | editor@chaskaherald.com
T
oday the name “Hazeltine” conjures up thoughts of internationally renowned golf tournaments. However, long before there was a Hazeltine National Golf Club, there was Susan Hazeltine. In fall 1855, Hazeltine began teaching at the first school in Carver County, according to “History of the Minnesota Valley.” For a few weeks, Hazeltine taught
classes in the home of a fellow pioneer, just west of the lake that now bears her name — Lake Hazeltine. Then, a log cabin school was built about one mile north, according to “Chaska: A Minnesota River City.” The golf club, adjacent to the lake, settled on “Hazeltine National Golf Club,” when it opened in 1962. The name “reflected both the club’s expectation that it would be a national crossroads for the game’s top players, and its most charming local feature, Hazeltine Lake,” wrote Rick Shefchik in his book “Hazeltine National: 50 Years.”

It also rented out parking lots at Pioneer Ridge Middle School, Chanhassen High School, Jonathan Elementary and the Kindergarten Center. Made approximately $95,000 from these rental fees. housands of Ryder Cup fans will be watching the action at Hazeltine National Golf Club, Sept. 27Oct. 2. Meanwhile, the city of Chaska and local businesses are throwing a big bash for visitors and residents to showcase the town’s historic core. Throughout the Ryder Cup, Chaska is hosting “The 19th Hole Community Celebration.” The event includes Chaska’s downtown business district, with many activities in the recently redeveloped Firemen’s Park. Lori Anderson, 19th Hole project manager, is spearheading the event, a partnership between the city of Chaska, the Chaska Downtown Business Alliance (CDBA) and the SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce. “Over the past year the city, CDBA and chamber have worked diligently on planning and executing the best event that encompasses everything from the heart of downtown Chaska, to the outskirts of the southwest region,” Anderson said. Firemen’s Park will be hosting movies, games and “Ryder Cup Highlights.” There is also live music, with bands ranging from Hillbilly Mayhem to The Dweebs. RES Pyrotechnics will shoot off fireworks over Firemen’s Clayhole on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening, after the bands are finished. From 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, cheer on as the USA curling team competes against Norway at the Chaska Curling Center, adjacent to the park.

Benjamin Blue does his best Michael Jackson impersonation during The Dweeb’s performance of “Billie Jean” during Dan Patch Days. The band performs at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, for The 19th Hole Community Celebration. Several Minnesota craft breweries and wineries will be at Firemen’s Park from Thursday through Sunday, including: Enki Brewing, Waconia Brewing, Schram Vineyards and Brewing, Chankaska Winery, U4ic Brewing and the Crooked Pint, serving Schell’s beer and domestic brews. Meanwhile, throughout downtown Chaska, 18 businesses serve as “The 18 holes of Chaska” with golf-themed activities, giveaways and business specials. Using a scorecard, visitors can visit nine or all 18 “holes,” plus the Firemen’s Park 19th Hole Community Celebration, and be entered to win prizes. (Completing 18 holes makes a player eligible for a grand prize drawing of $750 cash.)
“Locations are family-friendly, and the level of participation is up to you,” Anderson said. “Stop in, look around a few minutes and receive your stamp, or stay longer to enjoy a meal, shop, participate in an activity. ‘Play’ one day or visit more than one day of Ryder Cup week to complete your card.” The Chaska Lions Club will serve beer at City Square Park, and some local food trucks will also be on site. We asked Anderson a few questions about the event. The following are excerpts. Q: Explain the “19th Hole” name. A: In golf, the 19th hole is a slang term for a pub, bar, or restaurant on, or near, the golf course, very often
the clubhouse itself. A standard round of golf has only 18 holes, so golfers will say they are at the ‘19th hole,’ meaning they are enjoying a beverage of choice, some good food and camaraderie. It is meant to be a place of gathering and celebrating — and that is our goal for the event. Q: How did the idea for the 19th Hole originate? A: In 2012 the Chaska city officials traveled to Scotland to see how a Ryder Cup was organized. We also wanted to get a feel of how the surrounding communities celebrated and benefited from having an event of this magnitude in their community. 19th Hole to 27 ®

What we found was, though the golf course, Gleneagles, was packed with 50,000 visitors per day, the community was not overly involved. Our group decided then and there that we needed to do more. We needed to offer our local families a way to be involved, especially with school being out all week. We also know we had to plan an exciting, fun event, that brought visitors outside of our area to Chaska, home of the 2016 Ryder Cup! Q: What do organizers hope to accomplish? A: We are really hoping to capture some attention to Chaska, and the entire southwest metro area. Our goal is to make the entire region a source of interest and a place that people visit while they are here, and want to make a return visit to see more. The PGA tournaments are fabulous for Hazeltine, but because of traffic and parking, have not necessarily been good for the business community. In fact most businesses we spoke with talked about having a loss during some of the past tournaments. We are really hoping that we can change that with the 2016 Ryder Cup. Q: How much is being spent/ where is the money coming from for 19th Hole? A: The event is about a $150,000 budget. $100,000 was raised from local businesses through sponsorship, and the remaining $50,000 was paid for by the Chaska Golf Experience, which is a partnership between the 19th Hole to 28
