Savage student gets shot at Guthrie stage stardom
Savage man dies in early morning apartment ďŹ re BY ALEX HALL ahall@swpub.com
A 49-year-old man was found dead Monday morning after fi refi ghters put out a fi re in his fi rst-level apartment in downtown Savage. The man was later identified by authorities as Timothy John Davidson. Shortly after 4 a.m., fi refi ghters were called to an apartment complex at 3950 126th Street for a report of smoke coming from an apartment unit. The resident from the above unit heard smoke alarms sounding and went downstairs to investigate. Upon fi nding smoke, the individual called 911. When fi refighters arrived, Savage police were already on the scene and had evacuated the building. “The police officers did an excellent job, said Savage Fire Chief Joel McColl. “The door of the unit was hot to the touch, so they knew that

Gianna Bonello-Freund has spent four years acting in fairy tales. Then her life turned into one. The 11-year-old from Savage began acting when she was in second grade at St. John the Baptist Catholic School, where she is still a student, performing in productions with her classmates as well as through Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre. Through the traveling drama company, Gianna found an outlet for her intrinsic creativity – conveying the classic stories of “Sleeping Beauty, “The Wizard of Oz and “Beauty and the Beast. “She’s very dramatic, says her mother, Liz Bonello. “She’s always put plays on with her friends and cousins. She’s a natural. Gianna has felt at home on stage since her first performance. “I kind of felt weird because all of my friends saw me on stage, but then it got really fun, she recalls of her debut at St. John’s. Now in sixth grade, Gianna’s previous acting experience is going to good use as she takes the stage daily, and nightly, at Minneapolis’ treasured Guthrie Theater in this year’s production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol. Gianna tackles four roles as one of 13 members in the show’s children’s ensemble and her commitment to the production has even followed her home. “Sometimes the singing and the dancing doesn’t stop, Liz says. “She’s been doing the Guthrie dance around the house. While the songs and moves may have changed, the Bonello-Freund household has never been a quiet one.
was not a survivable environment because there was fi re in there, and so they evacuated the rest of the building. Firefighters had to break a window to enter the apartment, and when they did there was zero visibility as the smoke was so thick. Firefighters located the fi re and quickly knocked it down. After a search of the apartment, Davidson was found dead. “Obviously no time of year is any good, said McColl, “but to lose a loved one around the holiday season, it creates more of an impact on not only the family, but the other tenants and the fi refighters as well. Within two hours of arrival, the smoke was cleared and residents were allowed back into the building. No other apartment units were affected, but there was smoke damage throughout the fi rst floor.

City says post office building purchase is ‘a done deal’ Council gives go-ahead for $745,000 purchase and lease-back option BY AMY LYON editor@savagepacer.com
Considering the recent struggles of the U.S. Postal Service, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Savage Post Office had considered closing its doors on McColl Drive and selling its building. But now, after more than two years of discussions and tentative agreements with the city of Savage to purchase the building and lease
space back to the post office, City Administrator Barry Stocks says “It’s a done deal. The Savage City Council unanimously agreed Monday night to give City staff the authority to execute a purchase agreement, five-year lease agreement and any other documents necessary to acquire the post office building. The purchase price listed in the post office’s letter of intent is $745,000, which is $35,000 less than the tenta-
tive agreement the City had with the post office in September 2010. According to Stock, the current assessor’s market value for the property is $850,000. “It’s been important for the city as a part of our campus plan to maintain control over this building and probably even fi rst and foremost above that, to maintain a post office presence so that our residents and busi-
