Letter from the

ne of the things I like about Savvy. mn Magazine is that we know how to share the spotlight. We, too, are a small, local business and we try to use our reach to encourage and support other local businesses run by and with women. When KSTP’s “Twin Cities Live” invited us to do a live segment with Elizabeth Ries we immediately reached out to sources that have been featured in these pages. Thanks to Sara Glassman’s extensive reporting I was able to highlight kids’ play aprons from Jess Lundgren of Waconia, tutus from Cosmopolitan Cuties of Cottage Grove, funky hats from attagirl by kedrin of Minneapolis and designer baby shoes from Chelsea Baby of Minneapolis. You can watch a video clip on the Savvy.mn website. This month’s cover woman, Leah SimonClarke, recognizes that doing business means ensuring people are not only satisfied with your product but also feel great about their interactions with you. She’s built an impressive career out of the art of browshaping and client relations and has grown her Extrados Salon & Spa into an award-

With Valentine’s Day on the brain, Savvy.mn asked Facebook readers (facebook. com/savvymn) and Twitter followers (@savvymn) for some of their romantic tales. Here’s a particularly sweet one from Heidi Schauer: “When my husband asked me to marry him, he had written a bunch of notes which sent me on a treasure hunt through our home and ended in a drawer where he had his grandmother’s wedding ring. It was such a surprise and a special day I will never forget.”

Winter wardrobe

mentor By Sara Glassman

F

rigid temperatures, gray skies and 4:30 p.m. sunsets are enough to drive even the most stylish Minnesotans to stand in front of their closet looking for something warm and cheery to wear.

Stacey Kollasch, owner of Clothes Mentor, Eden Prairie

Get your fashion fi x from Clothes Mentor instead. At the Eden Prairie location of the resale store, you’ll find plenty of options at a fraction of the original retail prices. Stacey Kollasch, owner of the location, stocks her store with everything from Target brands to Diane von Furstenberg dresses, which they buy outright instead of consigning. That means they’re extra picky about the selections, making it easier for you to find the good stuff. The most important rule for winter fashions is to stay warm, but there are easy ways to look stunning in any weather. Here are some of Stacey’s tips: ● Ugg boots: Warm but fashionable boots are essential this winter. Look for shearling-lined wedge boots and Uggs. If you’re lucky enough to find them in your size at Clothes Mentor, you’ll save a bundle – they’re about $65 (originally $275). They also have Sorel Boots.

Westerninspired boots

Ugg boot, shoe, and coat

● Western-inspired boots: Look for any boots or shoes with fringe and beads. They are usually easy to slip on and off, and are fun to wear with patterned socks that peak out the top. ● Faux fur: Adding a touch of faux fur trim can make any outfit feel more glamorous and adds a touch of drama as it works with jeans or a dress. Look for collars or try a soft faux fur vest as part of an outfit that can work as outerwear on warmer days and an extra cozy layer on freezing ones. A Russian-style fur trimmed hat will keep the warmth in.

Down vest with faux fur

● Down: There’s less puff in current puffy coats, but they’re still warm and cozy. Clothes Mentor has everything from vests to long North Face coats. The muted grays and colors are more popular than black, which also helps you not look like the Michelin man. They’re so thin that you can roll them up and pack them. ● Scarves: These are not just practical, they’re also fashionable. You can take advantage of this wrapping trend by adding a splash of color or drama to your outfit. Try an animal print or Aztec pattern. You might want to throw on a “donut” infinity scarf, available at Clothes Mentor for just $8 to $12. ● Chunky sweaters: On a less-than-freezing day, you can try a sweater coat or a cape or poncho. The chunkier the better. Clothes Mentor, 8425 Joiner Way, Eden Prairie, 952-944-3111, clothesmentor.com.

Winter skin care 101 There’s nothing like a brutal Minnesota winter to wreak havoc on your skin. “The change in seasons can always make people’s skin act differently and winter is by far the most extreme in causing changes,” said Becca Lillemo, esthetician at Phatchellies Hair and Skin Salon in Hopkins. The transition can make anyone’s skin feel itchy, dry and dull, said Lillemo. She offered these tips for keeping your skin glowing: + Re-evaluate your current skin care routine. The lightweight moisturizers, strong exfoliants and foaming cleansers that worked in the summer months need to take a backseat in the winter. Winter skin needs gentler, moisturizing products to protect from the elements and prevent irritation. + Use sunscreen. Just because it’s cloudy, doesn’t mean you can skip sun protection. The sun’s rays can reflect off the snow, making them more intense. Protect your skin from sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer.

healthy fats can promote great skin. Coconut oil, avocados and flaxseed oil will help to moisturize you from the inside out, keeping skin supple and hydrated. + Use a humidifier. Getting more moisture into the dry air of your house will help prevent your skin from drying out as easily. Place one or two humidifiers throughout your house, especially in the bedroom so healing can take place while sleeping.

Becca Lillemo

+ Take short showers. Although long, hot showers feel like relief from frigid winter, they will dry your skin out. Hot water removes your skin’s natural oils and can make dry skin worse. Keep showers short (5 to 10 minutes), the water lukewarm and moisturize right after to help keep skin soft and itch free. Hands-Only CPR a simple life-saver By Sara Glassman As any current or former fan of “Grey’s Anatomy” would know, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can save lives. However, you don’t have to be an MD to learn it. For those without a medical degree, you might want to study up on the two-step Hands-Only CPR, which was recently cited by two studies in the New England Journal of Medicine as just as effective as the traditional version. “Historically, people outside the health care setting have been reluctant to perform CPR due to many factors including the perceived complexity of CPR, fear of doing harm to the victim and fear of contracting infectious disease with mouth-to-mouth,” said Dr. Kevin Sipprell of Ridgeview Emergency Department. The Hands-Only CPR focuses on chest compressions only. “Hands-Only CPR is very easy to learn and perform,” Dr. Sipprell said. “While it does not replace formal CPR education, these simple steps can help save a life.” Dr. Sipprell praises Hands-Only CPR’s simplicity and the fact it can be performed on teens or adults who suddenly

Call 911 collapse. You can leave the rest for when the professionals arrive. “It is felt that if the collapse is not cardiac arrest, the potential harm of performing HandsOnly CPR is minimal and is outweighed by the potential benefit,” he said. According to Dr. Sipprell, here’s what you do: “If you see an adult suddenly collapse, first, call 911 (or have someone call). Then, put the heel of one hand on the center of the person’s chest and place your other hand on top of it. Push hard and fast at a rate of about 100 beats per minute.”

Push hard and fast in the center of the chest Easy enough? You can learn more about it and watch a demonstration at handsonlycpr.com. Last year Ridgeview trained more than 3,500 people in the process at the Carver County Fair. If you’re interested in furthering your skills, you can learn traditional CPR, also offered by Ridgeview. For information on CPR training at Ridgeview Medical Center contact Connie Braun at 952-442-2191, ext. 5544, or connie.braun@ ridgeviewmedical.org.

Heart-to-heart talk According to the Center for Disease Control, an average of 14 women die of heart disease every day in Minnesota. The American Heart Association (AHA) is determined to change that through Go Red for Women (goredforwomen. org). The goal is to raise awareness about the disease, especially during the month of February. For National Wear Red Day Feb. 3 women are encouraged to wear a shade of the color in solidarity of spreading the heart health message. On Feb. 4, the Mall of America will host several free events to save you from a broken heart. Here’s what you’ll find between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.:

What’s new about edible fungi? With more varieties populating supermarket shelves, there’s a growing awareness that this low-calorie but highly flavorful food packs a nutritional punch. According to Euromonitor, the benefit of mushrooms – which can lower cholesterol, boost the immune system and possibly even fight cancer – are underappreciated.

Here are 3 ways to kick the habit of skipping workouts! 1. Keep your eye on the prize! You must have a very strong “why” you are doing it. Always connect to that “why,” especially when things get tough or you get busy. If your goal is to get back into your favorite jeans, hang them on the outside of your closet where you’ll see them every morning when you wake up. For an extra nudge, pin up an old photo of yourself wearing them. 2. Schedule a consistent workout time and make it top priority! Make yourself a priority like you would a meeting with your boss or a top client. 3. Use the power of a pro or a partner! You’re much less likely to be a no-show for your workout when someone’s waiting for you at the gym. It’s a mighty motivator when a friend or trainer is there, waiting, holding you accountable to your exercise commitment.

Expert Question

“My mother used to have gum surgeries that always hurt and was slow to heal. Isn’t there anything that can be done instead? Why does it even matter?” Years ago gum infections were treated with a surgical procedure called root planning and scaling. This was about as unpleasant as it sounds. While sometimes this is the only solution for deep infections, there are other less invasive procedures that often can be performed instead. Gum infections left untreated destroy bone, placing you at risk for losing teeth. Bacteria from the gums also enters the blood stream traveling to major organs creating new infections.

Today we treat disease with advanced technology like micro-ultrasonic instruments, lasers and antibiotic gels placed directly at the infection site. The magnetic light energy of the laser is designed to seek out periodontal infection and therefore, doesn’t harm the teeth or other, healthier tissue. This is one of the amazing characteristics of lasers! The laser sterilizes the area to allow the gums to return to a healthy, infection-free state. GUM DISEASE IS A SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUE, AND NOT ONLY TO YOUR TEETH. TODAY; QUICKER, GENTLER, AND LESS INVASIVE TECHNIQUES CAN BRING YOUR GUMS BACK TO A HEALTHY STATE.

Eyes on beauty

Leah Simon-Clarke’s Extrados Salon & Spa helps women feel beautiful inside and out

D

on’t bother trying to convince Leah SimonClarke, owner of Extrados Salon & Spa, that beauty is only skin deep. “It’s so much more!” she said. That’s what Extrados is all about. “Beyond making people look good, it’s about how we make them feel on a deeper level,” said Leah. Anyone who spends 15 minutes in Leah’s reclining chair as she plucks, dyes and examines your brows will find the service refreshing and enriching. Early in her career the Aveda Institute graduate became fascinated by eyebrows. Leah would look at the brows on magazine covers and think that she was able to shape them in a similar way, but felt something was still missing. “I immediately had a vision for changing eyebrows,” she said. So, about 10 years ago, she contacted the man behind many of the famous brows, Demone Roberts in Los Angeles, and went west to learn with him. She brought these new skills back to Minnesota. In 2004 Extrados became the first eyebrow shaping specialty spa in the Twin Cities. She shared her skills and meticulously trained her staff in the ways of the arches. While the novel idea immediately attracted attention and clientele, Leah furthered her own education by working as the eyebrow specialist monthly at Frédéric Fekkai in Los Angeles. Their quality of hair services inspired her to expand the mission of Extrados. Her philosophy: “Looking natural, yet glamorous.”

12

savvy.mn | February 2012

She eventually shifted her focus to the two-story space in Linden Hills where Extrados is now located. She even “imported” Fekkai-trained colorist to the stars Tony Castro to work there. Extrados offers hair, makeup, brows, sunless tanning, body waxing, massages and facials. Leah has even hosted classes at Extrados with inward-focused topics like goal-setting. The life-enriching opportunities play into the unique connections that Leah and her team form with clients. “My customers feel safe with me,” she said. “Even if it’s only 15 minutes every month for brows or 45 minutes for a haircut every two months, we build a friendship.” When you walk away from Extrados, your eyes will literally look more open under the perfect arches and possibly be opened from a book suggestion. Leah is an avid non-fiction reader – Dr. Wayne Dyer’s “The Power of Intention” is a favorite. Leah has been intentional about building an innovative business and she has been successful at it. She appeared on “America’s Next Top Model,” with Tyra Banks. She’s been profi led in Cosmopolitan and Extrados just won the People’s Choice award for

Leah Simon-Clarke puts the finishing touches on Aleksa Montpetit’s eyebrows at Extrados Salon & Spa.

Outstanding Wedding Hair & Makeup from Mpls.St.Paul Weddings magazine. What’s her secret to success? “You really have to have endurance, and through endurance, focus as well,” she said. “Going into Extrados, I knew I had to give it whatever it would take, not knowing how difficult it would be.” Working with your mind, body and spirit is how she ties it all together for Extrados’ clients and herself. Leah likes to focus her mind through reading, exercise and quenching her spirit through contact with nature (preferably at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska).

She feels the inside and outside are connected on a deep level. “If our house is in shambles, the lawn is in shambles and the roof is damaged, we’re not going to feel good,” Leah said. “Grooming can have the same effect – when we feel beautiful, we act in beautiful ways. When we look put-together, feel put-together and feel nurtured, it can affect the other relationships we have.” Leah switches up her look from year-to-year. In 2010, she hacked off 7-inches of hair and in 2011, she went darker. This year she’s channeling a “sun-kissed golden bright” hue and fuller look with extensions. “I think it’s important that every woman feel beautiful and sexy every day,” Leah said. “Of course, if you want to look beautiful and sexy, we do a brilliant job at it.”

Frame your face If the eyes are the window to the soul, you better get them framed perfectly. Here’s some shaping advice from expert Leah Simon-Clarke. “The natural curvature on the bone structure and the way the hair moves and grows is going to be an indicator,” she said. Be careful at the center: Beware of magazine advice. They often suggest taking off too much from in between brows. According to Leah, you should start your brows from a line drawn upward from the bridge of your nose, the narrowest part of your nose. Many people accidentally take off too much from the center and will take off even more trying to even out brows. Don’t shorten the length: “In ten years, I have seen only one person who actually needs shortened brows on the outer edge,” said Leah. “We’ve been given the natural length of eyebrows.” Any plucking from the outer edge may ruin your arch. “The length allows us to have a natural curvature,” she said. Avoid thinning: In the past few years, Leah has noticed people have been more careful about not thinning out brows. “Trends are not going to give you what’s going to look best on you,” said Leah. “Classic shapes, with the body you’ve been born with, are going to give you the best shape.” She warns that taking out 50 percent of your eyebrows will age you. Leave the top alone: “You don’t need to take shape out from above,” said Leah. Other than removing a few scattered hairs, any above-the-brow adjustments will likely result in a flat brow. “A lot of your arch is what you get from the peak on top of the eyebrow.” Sculpt with care: It’s easy to get carried away when you think you’re trying to create an arch. That strategy will backfire. “When trying to create an arch, people bulk up underneath too much, rounding it up, giving that half moon shape,” Leah said. That creates the dreaded “hook” or “comma” eyebrow.

“When we feel beautiful, we act in beautiful ways.” Leah Simon-Clarke

Saving for fun By Sara Glassman

There are so many things to save money for – an emergency, retirement, a college education. However, you can also motivate yourself and your family to save for something more immediate and more inspiring, such as a vacation. Financial Advisor and CEO of Prosperwell Financial, Nicole Middendorf knows quite a bit about big-picture saving. “It’s hard to save for retirement – it’s far off and boring,” she said. “But if you’re saving for a cabin or a new car or a wedding, it’s more fun.” She advises taking advantage of opportunities such as 401K matches first, but also live a little with a fun fund. Here’s how to get started: + Have a goal: Pick out a trip or a specific item you want to save for, whether it’s a trip to Europe or a trampoline. Figure out how much it will cost. + Open a money market account: It’s really risky to charge a trip and plan

to pay for it later. “You don’t want to spend money you don’t have,” said Middendorf. Instead, set up an account just for the fun stuff. “The money will be there and accumulate,” she said. “You’ll wake up one morning and have the money.” A money market account will be invested in CDs and bonds, which have a better chance of earning interest than a traditional savings account. Wherever you decide to save, just make sure that it’s FDIC insured. + Get the family involved: You can use savings for something tangible as a teaching experience. If you’re saving money for something that will benefit your kids as well, encourage them to contribute and match the money they put away. “We live in this ‘I have to have it now’ world versus savings and the gratification in that,” Middendorf said. + De-clutter for cash: People have so much stuff that clearing it out can make you feel better. or consignment can help you add money to your fun fund and help clean out your house. Women, Money and Happiness workshop: Nicole Middendorf will host this workshop about investing for women, including retirement planning, estate planning, insurance, asset allocation, college education planning, the difference between men and women and more. 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 at Prosperwell Financial, 15600 35th Ave. N., Suite 101, Plymouth. Free with a reservation: www.prosperwell.com or 763-231-9500.

Why hire women?

Companies with the most women on their boards post 66% higher returns on invested capital and 42% higher returns on sales than companies with the fewest women represented. Fortune 500 companies that promote women to senior roles consistently outperform their competitors, according to a post by DailyWorth.com in which it recounts findings from the Senate Joint Economic Committee’s 2010 report, “Invest in Women, Invest in America.”

Money in the bank? Do you have that feeling like you’ve lost something, well, here it is. You likely have $205 that you’re never going to use. A new study from Colloquy says Americans “throw away” nearly a third of the credit card rewards they earn over the course of a year. The marketing research indicates that each household earns an average of $622 annually in credit card cash back, points or miles yet doesn’t claim nearly a third of those rewards.

Price check Don’t forget your cell phone when you’re out shopping. Amazon’s Price Check app is meant to be used in a brick-and-mortar store. You can say a product name or scan the barcode, take a photo or do a search for an item with a Smartphone, and then the app reveals how much the same item is selling for at Amazon.

Mileage watch Late with your oil change? You can probably ignore the number on the reminder sticker on your windshield. The idea that the oil must be changed in a car every 3,000 miles or three months isn’t true for most cars. You can thank improvement in oils, friction proofing and car engines for lengthening the oil-change interval, typically 7,500 to 10,000 miles for most vehicles. The state of California launched checkyournumber.org where you can look up the suggested mileage interval suggested by auto manufacturers.

It’s girls night out

ate night has nothing on a fun night out with your girls. Mary Pokluda, the resourceful founder of Bumblebee Personal Assistants, bumblebeepa.com, offered up some fun ideas for making the most of your grown-up play dates.

you’re waiting to bowl,” said Mary. She recommends making a reservation, especially for a group.

You and your friends can bond over your shared fear of heights or your athletic prowess at an indoor climbing wall like Vertical Endeavors in St. Paul.

Go chi-chi bowling: Mary adores the newish Pinstripes in Edina. The upscale restaurant and bar has bowling, bocce ball and two outdoor fire pits. You can reserve a private space or just take advantage of all they have to offer in a bustling, but low-key spot. “You sit on leather couches when

Make it a brunch: You don’t have to stick to nights-only. Get everyone together for a fun and decadent brunch such as Santorini’s Greek fare, Mystic Lake’s enormous buffet, Pinstripe’s mimosas or take a trip to Rudy’s Red Eye Grill in White Bear Lake for a Bloody Mary bar. Take the book club out: If your book club feels like an excuse to hang out, make things even more interesting by holding it in a bar or coffee shop. Try Spill the Wine in Minneapolis or take over an area of Beaujo’s in Edina. Become a beer connoisseur: Mary has noticed her girlfriends have been getting into beer. “You can talk to the bartender and become educated on the

different varieties like darks, lights, heavy and hoppy,” said Mary, adding that single girls might find their beer know-how will impress potential suitors. Try the Happy Gnome, Cooper’s Pub, 3 Squares, Crooked Pint Ale House and Muddy Pig. Explore world cuisine: Get your friends together to try restaurants focusing on authentic cuisine. Mary says everyone should order a different dish and just share. Here’s a list to get you started: Kinhdo for Thai, Kip’s Pub for Irish, Taste of India for Indian, Quang’s for Vietnamese and Black Forest Inn for German. Mary likes El Burrito for Mexican. “It’s the closest to my grandma’s that I’ve ever tasted,” she said. Get playful: You can leave the kids at home and have fun acting a little like them for a night. Try trampoline parks such as Sky Zone in Plymouth or an indoor climbing wall such as Vertical Endeavors. Winery tours: Take a road trip to one of the local wineries, many of which are open year round. Take a trip to Stillwater and tour the Joseph Wolf Brewery Cave. Yes, cave. And enjoy Italian cuisine in the adjoining Luna Rossa restaurant and wine bar.

Kilian found the key to unlocking his potential. From kindergarten on, Kilian struggled with academic and behavioral challenges. Killian seemed unfocused and disorganized, did not put forth effort, scored inconsistently on tests, missed assignments, and was not living up to his potential. Years of trying harder, medication, tutoring, counseling, and teacher conferences resulted in limited, temporary improvements. As Kilian began high school, solving his academic challenges became critical. At LearningRx in Eagan, Kilian’s “untrained” brain became fit and efficient. Test results showed huge improvement, while Kilian succeeded in the classroom. In just a few months, Kilian went from barely getting by to earning an academic letter by June of his freshman year!

“We wish we had known about LearningRx years ago. Cognitive training was the solution that moved Kilian from struggling to amazing.” —Kilian’s mom, Anne, Woodbury, MN

Find out what’s holding your child back. Get to the root cause of your child’s struggle to focus, think, and learn. With amazing results, our proven program strengthens the parts of the brain that help students learn and read better.
