hank you for making Boots & Boas Dash/5K Run/ Walk a great success. We were able to donate $500 to Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women and $500 to Cornerstone; two local organizations that work to end domestic violence through education and advocacy.
The chicest Southwest-inspired pieces to wear this season are not your run-of-the-mill cowboy shirts and tooled-leather belts. This fall, it’s all about high-contrast Navajo patterns and richly intricate textures.
In the September issue of Savvy.mn we learned from Mary Ann Bigaouette, executive director at Southern Valley. In the November issue we’ll learn more about domestic violence from Cornerstone, plus we’ll share fun photos from the event. (You can view them now at Savvy.mn).
Free People Tribal Stone Bib necklace, $38, Urban Outfitters and urbanoutfitters.com. This statement necklace can turn any basic sweater or tee into a look. It’s a good way to wear jewelry that’s not overly blingy. Lori’s Leather and Feather Earrings, $8, lorisshoes.com. These danglers will add a little cowboy touch with whatever you’re wearing. Cobra Society hand-woven wool boots, $795, Pumpz & Company (Galleria, Edina) and net-a-porter.com. These boots are definitely an investment, but they’ll last forever and you’ll fi nd (surprisingly) that they go with everything. They’re designed by Minnesota-native Alex Davis. But I can’t wait until next month to say thank you! This was our first Boots & Boas race and we couldn’t have done it without all of you. We especially appreciate the generous support of St. Francis Regional Medical Center, our Presenting Sponsor, who teamed up with the magazine and the Eden Prairie News to host this event. I thank our Major Sponsor LasikPlus; our Nutritional Food Sponsors Complete Nutrition and Pure Market Express; our Water Station Sponsors, Anytime Fitness, both the Chaska and Eden Prairie locations; and exhibitor Dr. Olinda Floro of Floro Chiropractic. I also appreciate the wonderful donations of gift cards, food and water from TC Running, Bruegger’s of Eden Prairie and Kowalkski’s of Eden Prairie. A half dozen members of the Eden Prairie High School Dance Team showed up early Saturday morning to Purgatory Creek Park in Eden Prairie to help direct runners on the trail and we so appreciated their positive energy. Thanks to Veronica Chapp, who created the bright-eyed runner pictured in the Boots & Boas logo. And fi nally, I can’t say enough good things about my wonderful and dedicated coworkers who always go the extra 5K to make our events and publications successful.

Not-so-secret Stash By Sara Glassman the garage, they teamed up and opened The Stash in Waconia about a year and a half ago. “We wanted it to feel like you’re going into your sister’s closet and [fi nding] all of the good stuff that’s in it,” said Becky. During the second weekend of every month, you’ll fi nd a wide selection of new merchandise, focused on stylish and inexpensive clothing.
A
woman should never give away all of her secrets. Especially the ones that make her devastatingly chic. So you should really appreciate this little tip: The Stash is an adorable shop with tops, bottoms and dresses in sizes 0 to 24 and tons of accessories. You can thank Becky Melchert and Summer Jensen for the occasional store. Before they were partners, they had neighboring businesses and became friends. Over wine in
The most charming secret touch? They’re affordable – you can buy an outfit for less than $50. So when people ask what the secret to your charm is, you can pass it along. Or not. Fall trends from The Stash The jacket: A great way to transition your summer wardrobe to fall is by creating layers. The jacket is the perfect piece to do this with. Start with a long sleeve tee, add your
favorite summer tank top, and throw on a jacket over to create a chic layered look. Leather cuffs: They’re everywhere! The chunkier the better. Lace: Look for lace tops in fall colors to add feminine texture to your outfit. The “little layer” necklace: The “statement” necklace is still important, but it doesn’t always make sense to wear something chunky. Wrap those long dainty necklaces a few times and add a charm necklace to create a whole new look. The Stash, 544 S. Elm St., Waconia, thestashofwaconia.com. New cookbook: ‘Flavors of the Arboretum’
Q. When did you start singing? A. I’ve been singing my whole life. Both my parents were music majors in college and they have recordings of me at ages two and three. I would sing harmony in the car and tell them they were off tune. Q. How were you discovered? A. A local radio station was holding a contest to play with Bon Jovi. We made it to the final eight bands, when the popular votes took over. Then, I got a call saying we had gotten second place and would play the second night. This was amazing. Then I got a call back saying that it had been a mistake. We made third place and not second. We were a little heartbroken, but it’s life in the business and I decided to go out of town with my mom. We were almost to Milwaukee, when we got a call from the radio show. [Jon Bon Jovi was reading his review in the paper and learned about the contest mishap.] He wanted to make it work. By some miracle, we got home and did the show. [Bon Jovi] came back to the dressing room and thanked me for coming.
E
ating locally? It’s a breeze if you’re in Florida or Hawaii, but in Minnesota that can be more challenging. Take inspiration from the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s “Flavors of the Arboretum.”

It’s the organization’s first limited edition cookbook with 101 tastes of the season. Contributors include guest chefs from throughout the Twin Cities (Vincent Franoual and Lynn Rossetto Kasper) along with recipes from the Arboretum’s Tea Room and resident chefs. While supplies last, it’s available at the Arboretum Gift Store for $18.95. Order at 952-443-1439 or www.arboretum.umn.edu/giftstore.aspx.

Q. What inspires you? A. Any story that touches me in some way. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s something I’ve gone through. I’ve written several songs about experiences my friends have. If something horrible happens to me, I’m devastated. I’m a better writer if I set it aside for six months and come back to it with a clear head. The best example is “Saturated.” It’s about a friend of mine, Thomas, who had been with this girl for a couple of years and was devastated when she broke up with him. He started drinking a lot and I wanted to tell him I was worried about him. Q. Advice to aspiring singers? A. My advice would be that you really have to love music and you have to have really thick skin. No matter how wonderful, nice and talented you are, there are going to be a lot of people who aren’t interested. Q. When you’re not gigging, who do you listen to? A. The new Adele record; I’ve been listening to that a lot. Aimee Mann and Kathleen Edwards, not new, but both really are great and have interesting voices.

Story by Sara Glassman Photos by Lars Kommienezuspadt
At Guild, a design collective, shoppers might discover unique and beautiful items like vintage designer dresses, Mexican folk art, jewelry, bird cages, lamps and even taxidermy.
P
am Mondale never intended to go into retail.
Collective effort
However, the St. Louis Park resident ended up creating the most inventive shop in the Twin Cities – Guild, a design collective. The concept is truly collaborative with a rotating roster of merchants and designers selling their wares there each month. Over the past three years, Guild has served as a launching pad for locals who have big ideas, but want to start smaller and get feedback. It has also provided a storefront for people who collect and resell vintage and one-of-a-kind furniture, jewelry and clothing. Truly, you never know what you’ll fi nd. That’s pretty much how Pam envisioned it. After growing up in Edina, Pam went to the University of Minnesota and then raised three kids. “I was happy as an at-home mom for 18 years, but always found ways to express myself creatively,” she said. Long before Guild, Pam was making jewelry. “I love working with my hands and messing with colors and textures.”
The inspiration
PAM MONDALE :

Beyond her hands-on expertise, Pam had an idea for Guild that she carried with her for years. It started when her friend Linda Renk (owner of Sequin Jewelry) took her to ABC Carpet and Home in New York in the early ’90s. She’s been back to the eclectic décor and lifestyle shop on every visit to the Big Apple ever since. “Whether it’s vintage or new, I always find something unexpected and wonderful there,” she said. “I wanted to emulate the sense of a curated collection and the drama they create in their presentation.” She was particularly impressed once when the entire floor was painted Hermes orange and the merchandise (on that floor) followed a Moroccan theme. Another time, she went and a wall was covered, floor to ceiling in silk daisies. “You could just get lost in it,” she said.
Inspiration aside, it was a matter of collaboration when she started the store in 2008. “The concept for Guild has been in the back of my mind for a long time, it just wasn’t possible until I met the right people to join me in the journey. “Everything happened so fast,” said Pam. During the State Fair that year, she had her fi rst foray into a pop-up store in the form of the Peace Pavilion, which featured peace signs on everything from jewelry to sculptures. Just when she felt “rather invincible for surviving the task,” the space in St. Louis Park opened up. “It was too perfect to pass on,” said Pam, who decided to do a pop-up store for the holiday season. So she gathered all of the people she had met over the years and brought them together. They painted the space, painted shelving units black for store fi xtures and placed giant iron urns from her house in front of the store, designing the perfect unnoticeable backdrop. They dedicated their creative energies to the presentation of the merchandise, so that it comes together in a way that is similar to ABC Carpet and Home, but also unique to Guild. Surrounded by so much talent, Pam considers herself the founding partner. “I will not take credit for our success, but I will take credit for being smart enough to invite in the right people at the beginning,” she said. The Guild quickly attracted a regular, enthusiastic and supportive clientele, who demanded the store persist beyond its initial run. It has continued to thrive as has the Peace Pavilion at the State Fair. Whatever happens next – in life and in business – Pam is ready and looking to collaborate.

Hone your psychic skills Stories by Sara Glassman

might even have prophetic dreams.
So follow them to Beginning Psychic Development Classes by Psychics in the Cities. Your teachers, Kayla Wright, Deb Battenfeld and Julie Randall, are the Psychics in the City. Five years ago, they created the company because, as a group, they were able to provide a more well-rounded reading. As a group, they each have a unique “take on science and the realm of intuitive abilities,” said Kayla. Deb sees angels and the other side, on a higher realm; Julie is a shaman who can offer insight to your soul; and Kayla can tell you about your everyday life. You can have readings with one or two of them at a time. They offer the classes to help you find your talents and gain insights on love, family, career and life by tuning into yourself through the hands-on experience in the class. Skeptics and believers are welcome. “This is really about people who have had touches with the paranormal, flashes of

information, think they feel voices, always know things and have no words to give this,” said Kayla. “It really touches on the basic, empowering them to develop it further or to incorporate this information into their daily lives.” Three signs you might want to come to class 1. You know what’s going to happen before it happens: There’s no such thing as coincidence, according to these teachers. Maybe the phone rings and you know who it is before you answer. You connected with them for no obvious reason at all. Or you’re going to work and for some reason, you went left instead of straight and it turns out there was an accident or the road was closed. You
2. You’ve had a paranormal encounter: Maybe you’ve seen a ghost, heard noises in your house or witnessed a full-on transition. For example, you’ll be thinking of your grandfather and then smell his cologne or smell your grandmother baking cookies. Or perhaps your brother died last year and the light keeps switching on and off when you talk about him. 3. You start hearing things: If you’re hearing voices, you might think you’re going crazy, but it’s actually your spirit guide. You could hear them with your living ears or hear them in your head. You have your own little voice in your voice, but the voice you hear is a little different. They’re often relatives who have passed over. It’s always loving, words of encouragement and words of love. The class offers a place with like-minded people who can help you tune into those people. Beginning Psychic Development Classes by Psychics in the Cities, Wednesdays, 7 to 9 p.m., Lake Harriet Spiritual Community, 4401 Upton Ave. S., Mpls., $30 per class, 612-860-9196, see www.psychicsinthecties.com.
Readers’ beauty questions answered If you’re one of those people who believe eyes are windows to the soul, you’ll really want to pay attention to how to make them look their best. We asked our go-to makeup guru Brett Dorian of Brett Dorian Artistry Studios to answer readers’ Facebook questions. More makeup mysteries? Post your questions on our page (Facebook.com/savvymn) and you might see the answers in a future issue.
Q. A.
When am I too old for glittery eyes? Because I still love them! – Joy, Roseville
This question comes up all the time – you’re not alone! Going with a glittery eye is appealing because it’s fun and festive; however, general rule of thumb is that all that glitter needs to stay in the hands (or on the
eyes in this case) of those in their teens and twenties. Glitter makes a big statement. As women mature, their makeup should evolve in the same way their wardrobe redefi nes their allure, sexiness and comfort. Let me introduce to you shimmer. Shimmer is the chic and grown-up version of glitter. It has a lot of the same pizzazz without the question of “am I too old for this?” Shimmer can be metallic, edgy, or soft. The difference is that there’s just a sheen to the eyes shadow- not big flecks of visible glitter. Just be careful of shades that are too pastel; frosty eyes are not a trend for fall and can make fi ne lines stand out more. Try Urban Decay’s new “Naked” palette for a plethora of shimmery delights this fall.
Q. A.
What really is the best under eye concealer? – Jessie, Eden Prairie There is no one right product for every person. One general rule of thumb
is to stay away from those old-fashioned yellow paste sticks – the kind that claim to be universal for all. If you have blue under-eye circles, you want to correct with something more orange. If you have brown under-eye circles, you want something more pink. If you have little discoloration and no major texture issues, I would suggest Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat for a brightening light coverage. If you are looking for a quick fi x under eye concealer that also doubles as an all over coverup to save time but still give some attention to trouble areas, try Makeup Forever’s Full Cover. If you have more discoloration issues to correct under the eye, try Makeup Forever’s Camouflage Palette to mix and match the perfect corrective color. Discover the lost art of frugality
C
hallenging economic times have helped people become more resourceful, especially when it comes to saving money. It’s something that Erin Schneider, a.k.a., The Cheap Chick (thecheapchick.com) calls “the lost frugal arts.” Here are her tips for getting back to basics and doing it yourself: Sewing, clothing repair Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on clothing that’s not even made to fit your body, learn to sew your own for a perfect fit. Or, learn to alter ready-made clothing to work for your body and needs. At the very least, everyone should know how to do simple clothing repairs, to extend the life of their clothes. ■ Watch video sewing lessons from Threads Magazine on YouTube.com or learn about basics like fi xing a hem or

Canning; making jams, jellies & butters Before the rise of supermarkets and the availability of fresh food all year long, families lasted through the winter by canning their crops. Even through the mid-20th century, canning and making jam was a popular way of ensuring none of the harvest went to waste.
eHow.com: This site has great videos and tutorials on cooking basics and home repair/maintenance.
■ You can fi nd out what fruits and veggies are in season, where you can pick them (if you don’t have a Victory Garden out back!), and how to can them all at one handy website – Pick Your Own.org.
The library: It’s not just for fiction! There are shelves laden with how-to books and DIY manuals. And yes, you can check them out and bring them home with you. True fact – my best friend taught herself how to knit from a library book.

Others would like to see what is available and acclimate themselves to the new situation they are in. Women come in angry or in tears and need someone to listen. That makes her role different than the typical boutique owner. “I listen a lot and allow women to fi nd their way, she said.

Thank you all for being here as I unveil the artwork for the fi rst wine label I designed myself. A few of you have asked why I chose to show myself so prominently on the label…and why I’m shown shirtless and much more muscular than I am in real life. Well, the purpose of the picture is to capture the true essence of my being. By viewing this, we embark on an artistic journey to witness my true self.
Savvy Scene
We
set sail aboard Paradise Charter Cruises’ Paradise Destiny II amid a downpour of rain. But we didn’t let the weather ruin the Aug. 16 Savvy Summer Cruise. We handed out more than 40 door prizes from businesses like Crofut Family Winery & Vineyard, Excelsior Florist, Pantouf’s, Cynthia Rae, Learning RX, Amore & Fede, The Bungalow, Lillians of Excelsior, Keiki B, Zelaz, Impact Clothier, Ooh La La, Fitness Together Chanhassen, Marbles the Brain Store and Brightwater. Guests also enjoyed pizza, treats, drinks and a gift bag. The mood was convivial but next time we’d like a little sunshine. Is that too much to ask?

I hear some of you claiming that this label has nothing to do with the wine inside the bottle, and is merely a venue for me to exercise my own ego. That is not true. For example, let me direct your attention to the nymph located in the lower foreground. That’s Amphictyonis, the Greek Goddess of wine. I didn’t need to add her but I thought she added legitimacy to the theme of the art piece. So you see, it really is all about the wine. Notice also how she resembles Angelina Jolie and how she kneels at my feet, gazing upon my countenance with adoring eyes. Is that Chuck Norris I’m beating down with one hand while I effortlessly play lead guitar for an awesome rock band with the other? Yes. This is not a cheap, self-serving attempt to inflate my own masculinity. No, this is an existential metaphor of the transitory nature of life. Duh. If you didn’t recognize that, you don’t know anything about art. The scene in the background is a young man receiving a sports award. This is a commentary on the day I won the Snail Lake Elementary School basketball team’s most valuable player trophy. The angels hovering overhead are my own addition but I’m pretty sure they show up at big events like that. We just couldn’t see them. Scattered about the rest of the label are some other minor details: The name of the wine, the alcohol content, the grape variety, etc. but in each case I have been able to mostly obscure those trivialities with more exciting information like my birthday, how much I could bench press in college and a few images of my favorite foods. This month’ recommendation: Cupcake, Prosecco ($9.99): Delicious and well-made, this Prosecco has flavors even more complex than the label described above: Take the love-child of a peach and a honeydew melon, drop it in a blender with a few almonds, pour over a piece of vanilla French toast and serve with a shot of cream and you’d get the idea. Now enjoy a glass while viewing a picture of me. To read more of Kris Barber’s insights on wine, visit his blog at Winerogue.wordpress.com or Savvy.mn.
