Scott County has many ‘Great Employers’

L

ook around Scott County and you’ll find an extraordinary number off businesses that contribute to the financial health of our communities and families. You will also find a significant number of businesses that have large signs announcing “Help Wanted” or “Now Hiring.” If you attend a gathering of business leaders, the primary topic of conversation you will likely hear surrounds the collective challenge to fill vacant positions. Scott County’s unemployment rate is negligible at 2 percent. We hear these concerns routinely from our clients of all business size and industry type. Some have been forced to alter business hours, reduce manufacturing output, and/or mandate the working of overtime hours. Many have upped pay rates, increased benefit options and assessed how the employee’s work experience can be enhanced. The competition for talent throughout the Twin Cities area is fierce, and is expected to continue in the foreseeable future. Thus was born “Great Employers 2018,” a partnership between Southwest News Media and Scott County Community Development Agency’s “First Stop Shop.” Joint meetings were held in recent months to discuss needs and options to help local businesses attract great talent. The conclusion was a multi-prong approach that would connect local businesses and residents with work needs, now and in future years. rea This print edition celebrates Scott County businesses identified by area wcase employees as being “Great Employers.” A recognition program will showcase or 2018 nominees at a networking event held Nov. 8. The “Great Employers” projects for nt Center will culminate on Nov. 14 with a Job Fair to be held at the Canterbury Park Event in Shakopee. We anticipate more than 50 businesses will participate in the Job Fair, which will be open to the public, free of charge, between 3 and 7 p.m. The employment trends seen today were forecast by First Stop Shop several years ago, and an initiative was launched to aggressively market Scott County as a great place to “Live, Learn and Earn.” Its goal, working in conjunction with other community leaders, is to have 50 percent of local residents working in Scott County by 2030, according to Stacy Crakes, Business Development Director for First Stop Shop. Housing workforce readiness, educational preparedness and transportation are key aspects assessed regularly to ensure this mission can be accomplished in the next decade. Through the “Great Employers” project, local employees were encouraged to talk about the attributes of their workplace, and why they considered it to be “one of the best.” Corporate culture, employee benefits, local philanthropy, entrepreneurship, growth, integrity and leadership were some of the areas we suggested nominations could be formed. Employers had to operate a business in Scott County. Four size categories based upon employee count were designated: 1-19, 20-49, 50-99 and 100+ employees. We were pleasantly surprised to receive 90 nominations. Several businesses had multiple nominations. Some submissions were brief and focused on one business aspect. Other nominations were quite expansive, with paragraphs written about why their employer should be recognized. A panel of four judges was assembled several weeks ago. Hours were spent one afternoon poring over submissions. The task was difficult, given the variety of responses received, along with the passion and pride exhibited by some employees when talking about their organization. More information on the businesses chosen as “Great Employers” can be found in this edition. A summary of some comments received during the nomination process is included, as well. In our book, every business nominated as a “Great Employer” for 2018 is a winner. Not only do they contribute to the economic vitality of the area, many of their employees are proud of where they work, and what their employer gives back to the community. Enjoy learning more about some of the exceptional business organizations that call Scott County home!

First Stop Shop: Focus is on economic development, local jobs

T

he First Stop Shop (FSS) is a local economic development resource and department of the Scott County Community Development Agency (CDA), according to Stacy Crakes, Business Development Director for the local agency. Originally created in 2012 by the Scott County Association for Leadership and Efficiency (SCALE), its mission is to assist the cities and townships of Scott County with economic development requests as they relate to a county-wide jobs goal to have 50 percent of the local resident labor force living and working in Scott County by the year 2030. Creation of the FSS was aimed at improving the ability of communities to quickly respond to business requests and put a new spin on how economic development had historically been handled within the county. Crakes says that as the FSS has

an experienced facilitator to help the businesses overcome growth hurdles. FSS also partners with the Technology Village Program out of Prior Lake to manage the FAST-TRACK Challenge, which is an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to pitch their business ideas to an esteemed panel of judges for cash and service prizes.

evolved there have been new programs introduced in the county to assist entrepreneurs and businesses at the various stages of their growth. The Open to Business program helps entrepreneurs and small businesses, providing free business advising services and in some cases financial assistance. The Economic Gardening program is also offered at no cost and targets more established second stage growth companies, connecting leaders from local organizations and

Over the past five years Scott County has seen tremendous job growth. In fact, according to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (MN DEED) there were 11,449 new jobs created in Scott County between 2012 and 2017, an increase of 27 percent. This job growth has coincided with decreasing local unemployment rates. As of September 2018 Scott County hit an unemployment rate of just 2.0%, which is the lowest it has been in nearly 20 years. The FSS works closely with a countywide initiative called Live Learn

Earn, which is focused on creating an environment where all residents can achieve sustained economic vitality through the areas of housing, transportation, workforce readiness, and education. Over 100 different community members have been involved through these four working groups to move action items forward that are intended to gain efficiencies and better align existing resources and programs, collectively providing a larger benefit to our community and improved economic vitality. Many great businesses call Scott County home, and we have good job opportunities here, Crakes said. There are many benefits to working close to where you live including reduced transportation costs, time savings, and improved quality of life, to name a few. An added bonus is having the ability to become more engrained and involved in your local community, which then makes the community a better place as a whole.

SHAKOPEE MDEWAKANTON SIOUX COMMUNITY, PRIOR LAKE - At the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC), everyone is like family, from the cashiers at the convenience stores to the accountants in finance to the housekeepers at the hotel. The SMSC offers unparalleled benefits and services for its workers and is largely dedicated to being a good employer. Being the largest employer in Scott County, it can be surprising to learn that the SMSC’s average tenure is eight years -- twice the national average. People stay here for a long time, and for good reason. The benefits packages go above and beyond the standard, offering both full-time and part-time employees the chance to participate in insurance coverage and 401k retirement plans. Employees and their families have access to on-site health, vision, and dental facilities, and most services are completely free of charge. Other services available to employees include an excellent paid time off program, physical therapy and chiropractic care, discounted prescriptions at the SMSC Pharmacy, an EAP program, discounted membership at the on-site fitness center, restaurant, fuel, and grocery discounts, up to $5,000/year towards on-site child care, and tuition reimbursement. All of these benefits combined contribute immensely to the quality of life the SMSC envisions for its employees. - The SMSC is much more than a resort and casino destination. It is a business filled with hardworking, talented, and inspiring individuals, all contributing to meaningful work both inside and outside of the organization. - Amazing treatment of employees, exciting work atmosphere.

TOTAL HEALTH ADVANTAGE, JORDAN - Fun, upbeat environment with a positive atmosphere. We have a work environment that doesn’t seem like an everyday job. The people I work are phenomenal and we make one amazing team!

TRADEMARK TITLE SERVICES, SHAKOPEE - I have never before worked for a company that genuinely cares not only about their employees, but also about their families the way Trademark Title does. Trademark Title also goes above and beyond to make sure the employees are trained well and prepared. They always recognize staff for hard work and show appreciation. Everyone is treated as an equal at Trademark. It is so refreshing to work for a company that values every single employee so much. - We have a work family that supports each other every day -- through our “superbowl” busy season and most recently with the death of one of our co-workers. We work hard but yet have many out of work get-togethers where we can relate on a different level. I would not want to work anywhere else! - To make a difference, you need a local business owner who realizes that the company’s most valuable asset is its people. Charity Malmberg of Trademark Title Services is that person. She has gathered an amazing group of individuals to make one amazing team that has led to the company values: compassion, confidentiality and commitment. Our company vision is to lead the industry with our unwavering commitment to the customer by providing peace of mind through excellence in title services while continuing to be the real estate community’s preferred choice for personal, professional, and educational development. What that vision statement doesn’t reflect is the strong belief in supporting the communities that support us. With internal programs that support CAP Agency, Loaves and Fishes, lunch accounts donations for local students and Jeans and Gems, we are able to come together as a company to make a difference. Working for a company where you know you are an important part of the team, where you are valued, where your input and contributions are welcomed and appreciated, makes Trademark Title one of the best workplaces in Scott County.

VALLEYFAIR, SHAKOPEE - We get to meet people from all around the world. Managers are there for you when you need help with anything. Anyone can work their way up into leadership positions.
