Shakopee:

It’s a great place to call home W

elcome to Shakopee, a community that mixes business and pleasure. From 19th century local history re-enactments at The Landing to outrageous re-creations of the 16th century at the Renaissance Festival and the amusements at Valleyfair, Shakopee is an entertainment mecca for people of all ages and interests. Whatever your hobby or recreational interest, Shakopee offers something fun for everyone. The Community Center has an ice arena, walking/running track and a teen center. Shakopee is also home to the Stans Historical Center in which the Maurice Stans collection and the county’s historical society collection are housed. It also has a large public library conveniently located in the downtown area.

With easy freeway access, residential development has surged ahead especially in the Southbridge area south of Hwy. 169. Today, it is estimated that more than 37,000 people call Shakopee home — making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the Twin Cities metro area. The community offers both private and public schools, which work together to provide a good foundation for children. The city also has an extensive park system and the adjacent Minnesota Valley Wildlife Trail is a nature-lover’s treasure. Get to know all of Shakopee. It’s a great place to call home. Scott County

A

As Scott County continues to lead the state in population growth, progress is evident throughout the community. Over the last several years, Scott County has managed to keep its

budget in check while still investing in its residents’ future: from the acquisition of new parks and green spaces to developing highly successful transit partnerships (the BlueXpress commuter line and the SmartLink transit cooperative), from the construction of two new mixed-use library facilities to installing a high-tech fiber optic ring, Scott County is truly committed to its new vision: “Where individuals, families, and businesses thrive.” Residents are encouraged to keep current on County news through viewing Board meetings (available online in “real time” and on-demand), visiting the website (www.co.scott.mn.us), tuning in to local government access cable for meeting coverage and other programming, and reading the award-winning resident newsletter (The Scott County SCENE). In addition, you can become more directly involved by volunteering with various community groups, serving on a citizen advisory committee, or by attending County board meetings and workshops, which are held on most Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. (please visit the website for up-to-date schedule information).

KNOW & OBEY SCHOOL BUS LAWS If you fail to stop for a school bus with RED LIGHTS FLASHING & STOP ARM EXTENDED it is chargeable as a gross misdemeanor punishable by a $3,000.00 fine and/or one year in jail.

CAUTION: The majority of children killed in pupil transportation are not killed on the bus, but OUTSIDE the bus. Many are struck by motorists who fail to stop for the flashing red lights and extended stop arm. This area around the stopped school bus is often referred to as the "DANGER ZONE." PRE-WARNING SIGNALS

RED LIGHTS & STOP ARM

A school bus driver activates the PRE-WARNING amber signals at least *100 feet before stopping. When the amber lights flash, you should immediately prepare to stop your vehicle.

You MUST STOP for a school bus when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended; this means that children are getting on or off the bus. Stop at least 20 feet from the bus and remain stopped until lights are turned off.

* If the speed limit is more than 35MPH the driver must give 300 ft. of warning.

STOP ARM AWARENESS Paid for by Palmer Bus Service, 730 W. 3rd, Shakopee, 445-1166

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Scott County Environmental Health Dept. .......................................................................952-496-8475 24-hour Information Line ................................................................952-496-8787 HHW Information ............................................................952-496-8652 Web site ................................................................www.co.scott.mn.us/hhw Almost every home contains some household hazardous waste (HHW), hazardous products or chemicals that can harm human health or the environment if handled improperly. These are products normally used in cleaning, home improvement projects, automobile maintenance, lawn and garden care, hobbies, and a variety of other tasks. They might include paint, varnish, pesticides, household cleaning chemicals, solvents, fuels, wood stain or preservatives, rechargeable batteries, aerosol cans, fluorescent lamps (including tubes and CFLs), mercury thermostats or thermometers, automotive chemicals or batteries, appliances, electronics, tires, as well as any other household products that are flammable, corrosive, reactive or poisonous. Each year, thousands of Americans are injured or poisoned through incidents involving hazardous household products. Minimizing the amount of hazardous chemicals stored in your home is always a good idea for the sake of your family’s safety. The Scott County HHW Facility will accept a variety of hazardous materials from Scott County residents. Many of these items are accepted at no charge — visit www.co.scott.mn.us/HHW for details. The facility is located at 588 Country Trail East (Highway 282) in Spring Lake Township, one-half mile west of the intersection of Highways 13 and 282, and County Road 17. The HHW Facility is open at the following times: Wednesday: noon to 6 p.m. Thursday: noon to 4 p.m. Saturday: 8 a.m. to noon (Note: The RE-USE Room closes 15 minutes earlier) The HHW Facility will be CLOSED for major holiday weekends, including Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving, as well as the period between Christmas and New Year’s. The RE-USE Room is fi lled with a variety of good usable products, including paint, stain, varnish, thinner, putty, adhesives, household chemicals, yard and garden chemicals, automotive chemicals, electronics, etc., and all of these items are available for FREE (to anyone over the age of 18)! A trip to the RE-USE Room as you plan your next home improvement or craft project could certainly save you some money! Reduce the amount of HHW your family produces by practicing “Smart Shopping.” Measure carefully, buy only what you need, and then use what you buy. Store any leftovers carefully, and protect from freezing, so that they will remain usable. Please note: The HHW Facility can not accept automotive chemicals in containers larger than 2½ gallons in size (fluids such as gas, oil, or antifreeze). Other unacceptable items include: household garbage, unknown materials, business waste (call for an appointment), radioactive items or sharps (needles). Regular alkaline batteries can be thrown in your household trash.

Education Shakopee ISD 720 T

he Shakopee School District serves more than 7,200 students in Shakopee, Savage, Prior Lake, and Jackson, Louisville, and Sand Creek Townships. The district has five elementary schools for grades kindergarten through fifth grade, a sixth grade center, two junior high schools for grades 7 through 9 and one high school for grades 10 through 12. We also offer a variety of early childhood programs from infants to preschool programs for families and Stepping Stones Preschool. We have a very diverse population with more than 40 languages spoken in our schools and our community. It is our district’s policy to maintain a learning and working environment that is free from religious, racial or sexual harassment and violence. We also maintain a policy to prevent and respond to acts of bullying, intimidation, violence or other disruptive behavior.

Our district’s wellness policy supports healthy eating and physical activity to ensure everyone experiences a school environment that promotes and protects the students’ and staff’s health, well-being and ability to learn and work. High Potential Program This program offers students additional challenges in many academic areas starting in the elementary grades. High potential resource teachers develop and implement expanded curriculum activities and assist teachers through staff development, team teaching, consultation on individual students and curriculum development. Resource teachers work with individual students and small groups. After-school enrichment classes and activities are also offered. Project Lead the Way Shakopee High School and Shakopee Junior High School’s Project Lead the Way program, its instructors and its students have earned numerous state, regional and national awards. PLTW is a nationwide program that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math. The junior high school was named a PLTW model school in 2011 for its outstanding program, one of only 16 in the nation to receive this recognition. Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) Shakopee High School’s PSEO program provides 11th and 12th graders who meet the qualifications the opportunity to take college courses for high school and college credit. Credits count toward students’ diplomas and high school grade point averages. The cost of attending, including tuition, fees and textbooks, are paid for the students. PSEO allows students to take courses full time or part time. Students are encouraged to meet with their counselors to register for this program. College in the Schools (CIS) & Advanced Prep (AP) CIS offers University of Minnesota credit-bearing courses to students in the district at a greatly reduced rate. By taking CIS courses, students

earn college credits and save their families money. AP is an international program that awards credit to students who receive a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP exam. AP is recognized throughout the country and even world-wide as a rigorous course of study that provides excellent preparation for students to compete at selective and highly selective colleges and universities. Co-curricular Activities Our district provides numerous activities in which students may participate in the arts, academics, athletics, leadership and other areas of interests. There are academic requirements for co-curricular participation at the high school. At the junior high and high school, all participants must adhere to the Minnesota State High School League rules prohibiting harassment and use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Some activities require participation fees. The cost depends on the activity. Personal Connections Knowing our students and regular parent communication are keys to our success as a district. We develop strong, positive, working relationships with parents to support our students at school. Our staff takes pride in building positive relationships with students through our academic teams. We use the district and school Web sites, school newsletters, red folders and phone messages to communicate with parents regularly. Our Hispanic, Russian, Asian and Somali cultural liaisons work together with our students and families so that together we can provide a positive learning experience, a variety of opportunities and outstanding education for all of our students.
