Support your local businesses Here are some of the primary reasons you should shop local and support the business owners who contribute greatly to the economic vitality of our community:  Job creation – area businesses employ thousands of residents of all ages and skill level. Many families rely on the income earned by working at local business operations.  Every storefront contributes to the local tax base and those dollars are used to maintain needed services, educate our children and keep local citizens safe.  Shopping locally adds time and convenience to your busy days.  Local stores are more apt to be managed by those who own the establishment and/or someone who is a recognized leader in the community. Your voice has a greater chance of being heard if you have a concern about a purchase or need help with a special order.  A concentration of successful small businesses in a community may encourage other potential owners to expand if they know residents will be supportive of their operation.  Doing business locally benefits the entire community!

Respect for patriots By Rachel Wittrock editor@jordannews.com

W h e n U. S . S e n . A my Klobuchar spoke to a packed Jordan High School gymnasium during an early Veterans Day ceremony on Friday, Nov. 10, she told the crowd that after their service, veterans should never have to wait for assistance. Servicemen and women are always ready and always there, so we should always be ready and there for them, Klobuchar said. “When they come home, we shouldn’t have a waiting line in our country, not for health care, not for their employment, not for their schooling — there should never be a waiting line for our veterans in the United States of America,” Klobuchar said. It would not be the only time her words were greeted with thunderous applause

by the high school students, veterans, school administrators and educators, elected of f icia ls a nd com mu nit y members in attendance. Klobuchar recounted how her job as a U.S. senator from Minnesota has put her in touch with veterans of all wars, from the World War II veteran who wanted to share a dance with her after an Honor Flight event to traveling with Sen. John McCain to see the North Vietnamese prison he was held in for fiveand-a-half years as a prisoner of war. Klobuchar said McCain could have received special treatment due to his father’s high-ranking military status. McCain’s father, John S. McCain Jr., was a Navy admiral when his son was first captured, and a few months later was promoted to commander-in-chief of all U.S. Pacific forces.

Jordan Honor Guard member Mike Hennen looks on as the Jordan Middle School fifth-grade choir sings”America the Beautiful” and “You’re A Grand Old Flag.” Despite his father’s status, McCain turned down special treatment, including potential release, and said other prisoners should be released before him. “You t hi n k about t hat

courage and he stayed in that cell where he was tortured,” Klobuchar said. “That is patriotism, and it is not always famous people that do this. In fact, most of them aren’t famous. They go on to do

these incredible things that we never even know about, and it is something that is so special about America that we celebrate today.” Klobuchar said her job has also introduced her to people who taught her a lot about service to country. She pointed to the Serving Our Troops organization in St. Paul, which was started to provide meals to soldiers and their families. Community leaders and business owners, including nine restaurant owners, provide steak dinners to soldiers overseas. At the same time, soldiers’ family members can enjoy a meal and see their family members through a live video link overseas. W hi le volu nte eri ng to serve meals one year, Klobuchar met a Vietnam veteran. When Klobuchar thanked him for his service, he replied, “One of the reasons

I do this is because when I came home from Vietnam, I wasn’t greeted with steaks and potatoes — I was greeted with tomatoes and people were throwing things at me.” “Those vets from Vietnam has taught us all a lesson, and that is you can have disagreements about public policy and war and if you should go to war and what (is) the best way and what you should do — that is fine, that is what democracy is about — but you never take those disagreements out on our soldiers on the front line. We respect them, they are doing their job,” Klobuchar said to thunderous applause.

WHAT IS A PATRIOT? Jordan High School also welcomed back one of their own, class of 1980 Master Sgt. Brian Buesgens, to speak.

Organics Recycling Facility draws record participation The Organics Recycling Facility’s yard waste colle c t ion pr o g r a m d r ew a record 5,02 4 participants in 2017, according to a news release from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Each Sunday during the months of April, May, Septemb er a nd Oc tob er, t he ORF accepted yard waste free of charge from Scott County residents. Now in its fifth year, the

participation in the program has more than doubled since it began in 2013. On the final day of this fall’s program, the ORF served nearly 800 people — a record number of participants for a single day, according to the release. The residential drop-off events complement the ORF’s ongoing partnerships with the cities of Prior Lake, Shakopee, and Savage to accept leaves, brush, food scraps, and other organic waste at

no cost. Other ORF partners include local waste haulers, food manu facturers, g ro cers, and school districts. The ORF uses the natural waste to make a variety of products, including compost for gardening, landscaping, a nd t u r f ma n agement — which eliminates the need to use chemical fertilizers and herbicides. SMSC announces grant partnership to support health-focused efforts The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and the American Heart Association have announced the creation of a $200,000 grant program to support innovative nutrition-based, healthfocused advocacy efforts in Native American communities. The American Indian

Cancer Foundation will serve as the intermediary partner for the new Fertile Ground Grant Program, according to a news release. The competitive grant program funds tribes, Native American advocates, Native American youth and Native American-led organizations

to create sustainable community health improvements through nutrition and food sovereignty efforts, according to the release. The grants of up to $35,000 provide support for Native American-led convenings to identify community health priorities, advocacy and policy strate-

gies that address improving health outcomes, access to healthy food and food sovereignty work rooted in tradition, culture and Indigenous knowledge. “Our work on prevention of disease a mong Native people has underscored this basic truth: good health is

highly dependent on healthy eating,” said Kris Rhodes, chief executive of ficer of AICAF. “With the SMSC and the American Heart Association’s help, we are excited about the possibilities for this grant program to stimulate new community-driven solutions.”

The SMSC is providing $100,000 from its Seeds of Native Health philanthropic campaign to improve Native American nutrition. AHA is contributing $100,000 from its Voices for Healthy Kids campaign, a partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Joy of Christmas

Celebrate the

SMALL BUSINESS saturday Nov. 25 founding partner

Your support for small businesses in our community is essential Small businesses are the foundation of every community across America, including Chanhassen, Minnesota. In 2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help businesses with their most pressing need – growing their business and client base. The day encourages people to shop at small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. As a consumer, you are a key part in helping small businesses thrive. By shopping or dining at small businesses, you’re showing your support for all the small businesses in your neighborhood, and reinvesting in the community you call home. Please join us by showing your support for the Chanhassen business community not only on Saturday, Nov. 25, but throughout the year.

JORDAN

Four-alarm tacos There are always some bugs to work out when opening a new business, which is why many opt to have soft openings. With 187 locations in six states, Border Foods is familiar with operating the Taco Bell franchise, but even they experienced some bumps after opening the Jordan location on Oct. 23. The Jordan Fire Department received four fire alarm calls to Taco Bell in seven days, the first call coming the day after it opened. Fire alarm calls came in Oct. 24 and Oct. 28-30. According to Jordan Fire Chief Gregg Pekarna, the alarm sounded when employees were trying to clean the grills. When the alarms continued to sound

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

SHAKOPEE

Lost and found If you’ve lost something in the city of Shakopee lately, it’s possible the Shakopee Police Department is holding onto it. For instance, if you are particularly fond of your assortment of coins and found they’ve gone missing, the department has good news for you. Other items raise questions — how would one misplace their hunting bow or generator, not to mention a pair of overalls? There are also a multitude of keys, purses, backpacks, jackets and phones as well as two bikes, a Magna and a Schwinn.

If these items sound suspiciously familiar and you’ve lost something in Shakopee lately, contact ecarlson@shakopeemn.gov or call 952-233-9400. After two weeks, the items will be auctioned or destroyed and the assortment of coins will be lost forever. - Maggie Stanwood

SAVAGE

Agree to disagree? Two Savage residents who sometimes disagree about politics have found a way to talk about — or not talk about — President Trump. Dotty Robe, 93, lives with her son, Greg Robe. Dotty used to be heavily involved in politics when she lived in Ohio. In fact, one year she was named Republican chairwoman of the year for her work there. Some of the

topics she’s most passionate about include education and fiscal conservatism. Her son, on the other hand, tends to lean left. He’s concerned about the environment and making sure people are treated kindly, among other topics. The two can watch the news together and talk about how stories are done and whether they are biased. They don’t always get into political conversations because of their divergence. Dotty said during an interview on another topic — her service in World War II — to give Trump a chance. Greg said he’d better not get too far into a political discussion. One way they deal with their differing opinions is to change the topic. Like, for example, how much he respects his mom and how she can make others laugh and how beautiful her piano playing is. Sometimes people just have to find common ground to deal with their differences. - Britt Johnsen

students were surveyed and 34 students were highly interested in lacrosse — 15 boys in grades 7-12 and 19 girls. “It is a growing sport, I am just not sure if we are big enough for it,” Perkl said. Perkl said he spoke with the fall and winter sport coaches and many of the coaches opposed adding lacrosse. “Some of them you’ve got to take with a grain of salt — they are trying to protect their program and their numbers — but some of them that are not affected by the spring numbers, some of those outof-season coaches, were also against it,” Perkl told the board. Perkl said he is also con-

cerned adding lacrosse will spread the district thin and make other sports less competitive. That concern conf licts with the result of the district’s survey results, which show just one boy and two girls surveyed were involved in other spring sports. The male student is on the baseball team and both girls are in track and field. Jordan High School females have the option of a coop with Southwest Christian, but they have more males signed up and are not offering the same to Jordan boys. Jill Gaffney, Grace’s mother, said she was very disappointed with Perkl’s stance and didn’t understand why other district coaches were involved in making the decision.

The cost of lacrosse Data presented to the Jordan School District estimates adding lacrosse will cost the district almost $30,000 in equipment, uniforms and coaching. Among the expenses are: $9,428 for two coach stipends $3,000 for 20 helmets $2,000 for 20 shoulder pads

“It should be an option for the kids — let’s see if there is enough kids to play and sign up,” she said. While Perkl was sharing

his thoughts about lacrosse with the school board in the upstairs meeting room at the Community Education and Recreation Center, a class

on lacrosse basics was being held below in the gym. Eight high school age students were learning basic passing, catching, shooting and dodge moves.

ADDITIONAL SPORTS OPTIONS Instead of lacrosse, Perkl suggested the district look at adding boys volleyball. Although it is not yet a MSHSLsanctioned sport, he said interest is growing. Jordan School District employees have wanted to add more winter sport offerings. Right now, the only winter sports are boys and girls basketball, wrestling and dance. Students are also able to participate in different activities, including the One Act Play, robotics team, speech team and Knowledge Bowl.

Last year, when Jeff Vizenor was the athletics and activities director, he talked to school board members about a p o s sible ho ckey c o - op with Belle Plaine. At that time, he also reported there was a little interest in lacrosse. Another new sports offering Jordan could offer is Nordic skiing. Perkl said it would not conflict with gym or field space and would provide a more aerobic workout for students. Jorda n School Boa rd members have been asked to send Superintendent Matt Helgerson and/or Perkl an emai l with the data they would like to see regarding lacrosse or the other sports of fer i n gs, a nd it w i l l b e discussed again at a future work session.
