WELCOME TO SAVAGE W
elcome to the Savage Lifestyle Guide, a place for you to learn all about what this community has to offer. Whether you’re new to the area or are just curious to know more about the city, this guide has everything you want to know. You’ll get the lowdown on restaurants and retail, government and parks, the local economy, what to do for fun and more. Don’t just take it from us. Savage has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing cities in the metro area. It was even recognized recently by research analyst Jake Hill, whose analysis of census data showed Savage’s transformation from small city to thriving suburb. Savage has a lot to boast about. Not only is it a safe, quiet place to live, it has plenty of businesses to choose from when you want anything from groceries to dog toys to dinner out with your family. It also has 23 parks and hundreds of miles of sidewalks and trails.
And it’s a family-friendly place to live. Parents can send their children to three school districts: Prior Lake-Savage Area, Burnsville-Eagan-Savage and Shakopee. There’s a lot more to learn about this city. Turn the pages of the Lifestyle Guide, and what you’ll find is essentially your guide to life in Savage. We offer you this publication as a onestop place to go for services, names, telephone numbers and even email addresses. Our hope is that you keep it close by and refer to it when you need something. However, if there is anything we missed or left, we apologize in advance. Let us know if anything needs to be updated so that we can publish it in the next edition. We can be reached at editor@savagepacer.com. Also, if you want to see more copies of the Lifestyle Guide, please call the Circulation Department at Southwest News Media. They can be reached at 952-345-6682. Thanks, and happy reading!

FUN STARTS HERE C
onveniently tucked between some of the south metro’s biggest attractions, Savage is a treasure trove of activity both within and outside of city limits. For residents beaming with city pride, Dan Patch Days is an annual four-day celebration named after the “World’s Champion Harness Horse” Dan Patch. The festival, held at Community Park, is packed with food vendors, live music, family-friendly games and a parade. One night is even dedicated to an adult-only wine tasting experience. Savage Mayor Janet Williams said she has attended Dan Patch Days her whole life. “It’s a community celebration where you get to meet all your neighbors,” Williams said. Beyond Dan Patch Days, Community Park is a hub for Savage entertainment and activity. The McColl Pond Environmental Learning Center is a unique facility created among 10 acres of native prairie, rain gardens, butterfly gardens and mature trees. The sustainability-focused center regularly hosts private and public events, including egg hunts, environmental seminars and school trips. Also located in Community Park is the Savage Sports Center, a climate-controlled space providing sport leagues and open play time year-round.

Savage, with its 21 city-managed parks and two staterun parks, is a prime sport for nature enthusiasts. MurphyHanrehan Park Reserve and the Eagle Creek Aquatic Management Area provide runners, anglers, skiers and equestrians acres filled with woodland pathways and fishing. For the foodies in the area, Savage’s historic downtown provides a variety of goods to sample. Buffalo Tap and Neisen’s Sports Bar & Grill are local favorites for American food. There is also a variety of Asian and Latin American markets and restaurants, including Wow! Thai Food, a Thai restaurant. If the parks and local eats aren’t enough, Savage residents have easy access to the biggest attractions in the southwest metro. Mall of America and its plethora of stores, restaurants and games is less than 20 minutes away. For those who enjoy the rides, they can find more of the same at Valleyfair in Shakopee. The Mystic Lake and Little Six casinos are also close by in Prior Lake and often host big names in entertainment.

ANNUAL FESTIVAL Dan Patch Days is the Savage community celebration held each year at the end of June. It is a full three-day family focused event that draws over 15,000 residents and guests to Savage Community Park located along Dakota Ave, between County Road 42 and McColl Drive. The event includes food vendors, games, eating contests, sporting events, a parade, fireworks and of course great musical entertainment. Dan Patch was the “greatest harness horse in the history of the
two-wheel sulky.” Dan Patch was born April 29, 1896, in Oxford Indiana, but was purchased in 1902 by Minneapolis businessman Marion W. Savage for the then fabulous price of $60,000. Dan Patch electrified the turf world with his record of 1:55 for the mile to set a new world mark for pacers, and had some 93,000 people gathered that day at the Minnesota State Fair grounds to witness the event. Dan Patch Days is all about bringing our community together. But this community celebration is not possible without volunteers. If you are interested in more information, contact the Savage Chamber of Commerce at 952-894-8876. Visit danpatchdays.org for a complete schedule of events and ways to get involved.

FOR THE LOVE OF LUNCH (AND DINNER AND BREAKFAST) I
f you are a food lover and either live in or want to visit the Savage area, you’re in luck. There are tons of options. Savage resident Bailey Carlson certainly thinks so. She was shopping at a local food market recently and made remarks about the diversity of places to eat and get groceries. “I think there’s a lot of options,” she said while browsing in the produce aisle. If you’re like Carlson and are looking for variety, as well as fresh produce or other healthy options, you’ve got a lot of places to choose from. There are farmer’s markets galore and several stores, from big-box options to small ethnic grocers that sell Latin American, Indian and Asian foods. Or maybe you need a coffee break. There are several choices from Starbucks to Caribou to Dunn Brothers Coffee and more. Or maybe it’s fast food you’re looking for. There are local businesses that offer casual dine-in or carry out, or even drive-through options. The new Hy-Vee, which opened in February 2017, offers a multitude of dining options. In fact,
Did you know? Savage is home to a variety of ethnic food markets, including the Asian Director Oriental Food Market and Super Mercado La Loma. the area within the store looks almost like a mall food court and there are many types of food genres available. There are also places in Savage you can sit down for dinner and enjoy conversation with friends or family. And if you’re up for a short drive to switch up your routine or try something new, Savage is also close to other dining options in Prior Lake, Shakopee or Burnsville, which all offer unique and plentiful options as well. You can find anything from fast casual to sit-down restaurants. In short, Savage is a good place for breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between.

HOW TO NAVIGATE YOUR GOVERNMENT I
f you live in Savage, you will want to know some of the basics: where to check out books, where to send mail, where the firefighters have their headquarters and where the local government does its work. The campus — at Dakota Avenue and McColl Drive — is where the people of City Hall, the police department, Savage Public Library, Savage Chamber of Commerce, a fire station and the U.S. Postal Office all do their work. City Hall volunteer Richard Gross of Savage frequently sees people come through the centralized government office. He said he’s never seen someone come in with a question that can’t be answered. “Everybody in the place is so helpful,” Gross said. “If they don’t know the answer, they’ll find it.” Once a year, the city campus is filled with hundreds of people for an event called Service Day Saturday, a free, youth-led event at that asks people to donate items to nonprofits and/or complete a service project that will impact people locally or even worldwide. Examples of service projects include decorating paper lunch bags for Meals on Wheels, among others. It involves nearly every facet of the city, not just physically where the government and library facilities are, but also students from local schools. The local schools include three districts that Savage children

They tend to go to either Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools (otherwise known as District 719) or BurnsvilleEagan-Savage School District (also known as District 191). Some kids go to Shakopee School District (District 720). Other educational choices for Savage children include a charter school, Aspen Academy and a Spanish immersion early learning center called El Bosque Encantado. Savage is part of Scott County, which has a board of commissioners made of five members. Statewide, representatives are in Minnesota House District 56A and Senate District 56. Savage is also part of Minnesota’s Second Congressional District.

SAVAGE IS A GREAT LITTLE CITY Savage is a vibrant suburban community of 30,285 that has bigcity benefits with a small-town feel. Conveniently located just 20 miles south of the Twin Cities metro, Savage offers quick access to freeways and jobs as well as a quaint downtown, a multitude of parks, trails and outdoor recreational opportunities, and a fascinating history. Combine that with great restaurants, plenty of big box national retailers and local small businesses, affordable housing and fun community events, and you’ve got a great place to live, work and play! Savage is a great place to live and raise kids. It’s recognized as a place where families can live well for less and enjoy top schools, low crime, quality parks and recreational facilities and reasonable commutes. In fact over the years, Savage has been named among the Best Places to Live in America by Money Magazine and among the Best Affordable Suburbs in the nation by BusinessWeek. Savage is also fortunate to have many amenities that bring people and families together. From nature to athletics, Savage offers something for everyone. We have an abundance of parks and recreation offerings with 22 parks, one regional park, and over 30 miles of paved and soft surface trails. One of our premier community spaces is the McColl Pond Environmental Learning and Event Center at Savage Community Park. Each year, thousands of families and neighbors gather here for free summer concerts on the patio, or weddings, family reunions and community get-togethers like the Craft Beer and Wine tasting. This past year, an estimated 50,000 people came to the Savage Sports Center to participate or
watch a sporting event or attend a community event like the Home and Garden Show. The Savage Library is another vibrant community space that not only offers a variety of free programs for children and adults, but is also home to the Heritage Room museum, Savage Senior Club and the Savage Arts Council. And in the summertime, residents enjoy discounted rates to the Lifetime outdoor community pool and head to the weekly farmers market in downtown Savage for fresh and locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers. While best known for its ties to the famous Dan Patch, Savage has a rich and varied history. Originally incorporated as Hamilton in 1892 by Irish and Scottish settlers, it was renamed in 1904 after prominent businessman, Marion W. Savage, who purchased the racing horse Dan Patch and trained and raced him at his farm in Savage. Dan Patch’s notoriety grew as the horse began breaking speed records and became a beloved American celebrity for running the mile in one minute and 55 seconds — setting a world record that held up for 54 years. But Savage is also regarded as the home of Camp Savage, a Military Intelligence Services Language School whose purpose during WWII was to teach the Japanese language and military intelligence to American soldiers. About that same time, Cargill located in Savage and began building ships for the U.S. Navy. This was one of the largest shipbuilding ports in the world, employing about 3500 people during peak production. After the war ended, the Ports of Savage became involved in shipping grain and other products, and is still home today to several thriving businesses that rely on the Minnesota

ORDINANCES For additional information about other ordinances, call the city offices at 952-882-2660 or visit www.cityofsavage.com. Curfews Curfews are in place for children age 17 and younger. Those under 12 must be in by 9 p.m. on weeknights and 10 p.m. on weekends. Youth 12-14 must be in by 10 p.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m. on weekends. Those who are between 15 and 17 must be in by 11 p.m. on weeknights and 12 a.m. on weekends. The restrictions apply to public streets, alleys, parks, playgrounds and other public buildings; as well as places of amusement, entertainment, or refreshment; and vacant lots. Details can be found at www.cityofsavage.com. Weed and Tall Grass Control Grass that is higher than 10 inches, or weeds that have gone to seed, are a violation of city ordinance. If, after written notice, the violation is not corrected, the city may cut the weeds and bill/assess the cost against the property. Parking Parking on city streets is prohibited between 2 and 6 a.m. on any day from November 1 until March 31, except as specified by designated signage or by permit. Tickets will be issued for violations. Snow Removal, Streets Plowing occurs after 2 inches of

continual snow has accumulated. Collectors and arterial streets are plowed first, then minor arterials. Roadways not integral to traffic movement (cul-de-sacs, dead-end streets and alleys) are plowed last. Roadways are almost always plowed twice, once to clear them, a second time to widen them. Snow Removal, Sidewalks City crews remove snow from sidewalks and trails along collector streets and major roads. Other sidewalks in the city are the responsibility of the abutting property owner and must be cleared within 24 hours of a snow event of two inches or greater accumulation. Water Conservation The city of Savage encourages residents to use water wisely to ensure an adequate community supply and lower water bills, which are sent out at the end of each month. Water rates apply according to the amount of water used: Those using less than 12,000 gallons of water a month pay the lowest fees per 1,000 gallons used. The rates increase for those using 12,000 gallons or more, and increase again for those who use 16,000 gallons or more. No outdoor watering from noon to 5 p.m. Property owners with addresses ending in odd numbers may water only on odd-numbered dates while property owners with addresses ending in even numbers may water only on even numbered dates.

HEALTHY OPTIONS IN OUR OWN BACKYARD
I
f you’re looking for a place to stay healthy, Savage is a good place to visit and live. The city is home to 23 parks, 22 of which are city-owned. It’s also got multiple gym options, including kickboxing studios and places to practice yoga. If you’re an avid swimmer, there’s also a pool at Lifetime Fitness that people can use for a small fee, thanks to a partnership with the the city. The city also has something called the Savage Sports Center, which offers a way to stay active indoors from November through April. There they offer events, “open play” for adults, kids programming, or even times you can run or walk around the track, among other happenings. During the summer months, the artificial turf comes alive as the dome structure gets taken down. This dome structure is why the Savage Sports Center is commonly called “the dome” throughout the community. Greg Boatman, Savage’s parks and recreation manager, mentioned the places available to buy healthy food, including farmers markets, which not only bring fresh produce but also

allow people to connect more as a community. “That’s’ what they’re designed for,” he said. If running is your thing, fun runs are always happening, throughout the summer and even in the winter. These happen locally and regionally and are a good way to stay in shape. Speaking of winter, you can try many different activities even in the bitter cold. From multiple city-run outdoor skating rinks (which offer hot chocolate on a weekly basis) to telemark skiing, skijoring and dog sledding, there are a lot of ways to stay active. And if you’re ever in need of care, there are plenty of places to get help. Many health care practitioners and dentists are available throughout Savage. This includes general practitioners, dentists, mental health counselors, optometrists, massage therapists and chiropractors. Regionally, there are nearby health care facilities, including St. Francis Medical Center in Shakopee and Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville. “Our life has really changed over the last 21 years… because of Savage,” Boatman said of deciding to live here with his family.

NEVER FAR FROM FUN Situated in one of the Minnesota’s healthiest counties, Savage residents are never far from relaxation and playtime. The area boasts 21 city-managed parks and two state-run parks filled with more than 30 miles of paved and soft-surface trails. Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve and the Eagle Creek Aquatic Management Area combined cover 2,800 acres of fishing, bird watching and woodland pathways. Operated by the Three Rivers District, both state parks provide unique environmental experiences and pull visitors from throughout the region. The Eagle Creek aquatic area is one of the only creeks in the Twin Cities area that is still healthy enough to self-sustain trout fishing. The park reserve trails are often sprinkled with a combination of hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders. The energy doesn’t slow down in the winter, either. Murphy-Hanrehan’s track opens for mostly expert level skiers in the cold months. Beyond the slopes, Savage residents have lots of options for staying active when going outside isn’t ideal. Five outdoor skating rinks are available in the winter throughout Savage. Sometimes free hot chocolate is served to keep skaters going. The Savage Sports Center, located in Community Park, is a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled facility available to residents year round. From November to April, the center hosts open walking and play hours for the public. People can hit golf balls and play soccer, baseball, football, ultimate Fris-

Shalom Ewald goes to the sports center a couple of times a week in the winter to run with friends. “It’s the best thing the south metro has to offer, seriously,” Ewald said while at the dome. With a growing population, Savage’s leisure options have expanded. For aging residents, the Burnsville Senior Center serves Savage residents with a variety of activity circles, social meetups and even sunrise stretching. The Savage Senior Club also provides volunteer group activities for older residents who enjoy being involved in the area. For those younger, growing families, the city organizes allage programs that draw about 3,500 participants every year. Summertime is filled with youth camps and kickball, pickleball, softball, bocce ball and sand volleyball adult leagues. Want even more adventure? The annual Dan Patch Days celebration brings four days of food, concerts and community pride every June.

A PLACE WITH HIDDEN GEMS W
hen selecting a place to live, most people want to be somewhere they can balance all aspects of their lives: Health, relationships and family life, finances, entertainment/ nightlife and more. With a population of 30,807 (as of 2016 census data), Savage has been recognized by BusinessWeek and Money Magazine as one of the best and most affordable places to live. It’s a very convenient place to live. Located between two major routes – Highway 169 and Interstate 35W — it has everything you need, including parks, retail and entertainment businesses. But if you feel like leaving the city to check out nearby attractions, it’s close to Canterbury Park, Valleyfair and Mystic Lake, among other destinations in the Twin Cities and southwest suburbs. Rachel Wagener is a huge fan of Savage. Originally from Lakeville, Wagener likes to say Savage is her childhood home because of how much time she spent at the music store where she works, LaVonne Music in Savage. “We still have a small-town vibe in that we have a lot of small businesses that have been here for a trillion years,” she said. It’s the kind of place where people can feel comfortable talking to their neighbors, even if they’ve never met before.
Just the facts Savage is home to a diverse and active religious community. It includes several Christian churches, a non-traditional spiritual center as well as a Buddhist monastery. “I have single-handedly found and reunited four dogs with their owners,” she said. Speaking of animals, you can take your pets around the city, which features 23 parks. Other unique environmental features include Eagle Creek (one of the last Brown Trout streams in the metro) and Boiling Springs, which is a historic landmark. Savage also has an active nightlife. One place people can go is a local bar called Neisen’s Sports Bar and Grill, where popular 80s bands have played, including Poison, Cinderella, Winger and Twisted Sister. “We’ve had these incredibly famous people come down here,” Wagener said. “They think our town is special enough.”

SAVAGE GROWS, OFFERS NEW BUSINESSES
S
avage saw growth again this year in its business development as it brought in a new Hy-Vee, which has an extensive array of choices. Besides groceries, the new store offers dry-cleaning, makeup and other beauty products and services, as well as a Starbucks coffee shop, clothing, a casual dining area that looks kind of like a mall food court, a full-service restaurant with an outdoor dining area, and a medical clinic space and pharmacy. There’s also a second drive-through Starbucks next to the gas station. “Small and medium-sized businesses are the heart and soul of our community,” said Anne Masis, president of the Savage Chamber of Commerce. “We have some great large businesses as well.” Though any new store or restaurant is usually the talk of the town when it opens, Savage’s economy has all kinds of businesses that people in and near the community frequent. From well-known chain restaurants to small shops in the downtown area to big-box stores, Savage has a variety of companies residents and community members can choose from. There are myriad retail and dining options, several kinds of grocery stores — including a few ethnic grocery stores — as

well as health care facilities to choose from. There are even kickboxing gyms and places to do yoga. If you need to go to a mall, there are nearby options in Burnsville and Eagan, as well. There are also quite a few manufacturers and large companies that do business in Savage. For example, Cargill, Fabcon and Continental Machines all have operations here. As for what gets made in Savage, one company, called Beckhoff Automation LLC, makes industrial PCs and software that pretty much run manufacturing plants at companies around the world. Another company, called Anchor Iron, designs, builds and sells a variety of custom iron railings, storm doors, spiral staircases, window grills and fireplace doors. And yet another business, Superior Minerals, mines materials in Iowa and then it comes to Savage, where it is processed and made into shingles. If you’re curious about how to open your own business in Savage, the city dedicates a portion of its website to sharing resources about starting or expanding a company. The website is at cityofsavage.com/business.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE COLUMN It’s been another busy year at the Savage Chamber of Commerce. It has been a great year for business growth in our area and we anticipate that in 2018, we will continue to see residential and commercial growth. You’ve likely seen many new businesses opening their doors in Savage this year. Savage continues to be a city that is a great place to live, play, and do business! In 2017, new grocers opened their doors, including Hy-Vee and Fresh Thyme. The corner of County Road 42 and Highway 13 is busy with new companies, including Noodles & Co., Club Pilates, and Tim Horton’s. The corner also has welcomed two new dental practices to town. Dentists of Savage and Park Dental both moved into the
Anne Masis area recently. Highmark Builders, Highmark Restoration and Highmark Exteriors recently built their new facility in the last remaining vacant lot in the Eagle Creek Business district. Savage continues to be an
attractive area for families to move to. Savage is recognized for our quaint downtown, low crime rates, job growth, along with many other factors that include exceptional health care services, and outstanding schools. These great amenities contribute to a first class quality of life and business climate in the city of Savage! You may also have noticed new housing developments around town. The Big Sky Estates development is the development that is being phased in at the Prior Lake Aggregates site, and Providence is also currently being developed on the corner of County Roads 27 and 16. Other developments will take shape as our population continues to grow. Mark your calendars for
Dan Patch Days, June 21-24, 2018. The Board of Directors and Committee are already hard at work planning another exceptional celebration for 2018. We highly encourage residents and businesses to get involved! For more information on sponsorship, volunteering, or getting involved, please contact the Savage Chamber at 952894-8876. Savage continues to be a great community to do business, to live in, and to visit! We encourage you to stop by the Savage Chamber and learn how you can get your business involved and how you can connect with your community. Anne Masis President, Savage Chamber of Commerce

THE RIGHT PLACE FOR PET LOVERS
I
f you’re an animal lover, pet owner or planning to own or even foster a pet, Savage has much to offer. Dog owners can use two off-leash dog parks, other parks (close to two dozen) as well as many trails to choose from. The first off-leash dog park is at Highway 13 West Frontage Road and Xenwood Avenue. It’s free and has two acres of fenced-in areas for dogs to roam. The second is at Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve. It’s three acres and is fully fenced with double gate entrances. It also has a water and dog wash station for non-winter months and has an automated pay station. “They are kept up so well,” Mandi Wyman said of local dog parks, which she called “phenomenal.” Wyman is the executive director of the Carver-Scott Humane Society. There’s also an event aimed at dog owners, the Savage Chamber’s annual DoggiePalooza event. It offers attendees a business expo, contests, as well as an agility course and obedience demonstration, among other features. But some dog business is a bit more serious. Owners must license their dogs and renew annually. Documentation that the dog has been vaccinated against rabies is required in order

to get one; the fee is $15 or $10 if the dog has been spayed or neutered. There are veterinarians, groomers, pet sitters, pet supply and food stores, as well as places to buy treats and toys for kitties. If you’re an animal lover looking to rescue, foster or adopt a cat, dog or other animal, there are a multitude of places serving the area. There is the Carver-Scott Humane Society in Chaska and Wyman said people are always welcome to volunteer or foster. Other choices include Saving the Strays in New Prague and Protecting Paws Animal Rescue in Prior Lake, which all serve the Savage area. There is also a nonprofit called Pawsitive Perspectives Assistance Dogs (PawPADs). The organization provides people with disabilities skilled assistance dogs and diabetic alert dogs. If you’ve lost a pet, you can call Animal Control (4 Paws) at 952-894-9065 or the Impound Information line at 952-8949065.

LICENSING 952-882-2600 Dog licenses are required and must be renewed annually. No license will be issued unless the owner can provide documentation that the dog has been vaccinated against rabies. The dog license fee is $15; $10 if spayed or neutered. Also, animals are not allowed to run at large and may be impounded if picked up. Feces left by an animal on any public or private property (other than his own) must be removed immediately. Not more than three dogs and/ or three cats are allowed per household.

n March 1992, a small team of people with a passion for the History of Savage’s namesake and his famous pacer won approval from the Minnesota Secretary of State for their articles that incorporated the Dan Patch Historical Society. The society’s mission was and remains the collection, preservation and dissemination of historical knowledge and artifacts about Dan Patch and his owner, M. W. Savage. The founding members who signed the articles were former City Administrator Mark McNeill, George Augustinack who was the vice president, board member and legal counsel Joe Cade, President Del
Stelling and secretary Janet Williams (now the mayor of Savage). In their first meeting on March 24, the board unanimously approved having a booth at Heritage Days (now called Dan Patch Days). The society has been a presence there ever since; recruiting members, educating citizens and generating interest in the person and his pacer. Sometimes the board would meet in the old Savage Public Library (which was the old Savage Bank), and sometimes they were at the Evergreen or Buckboard restaurants or maybe City Hall. Some of the first items in the society’s archives were purchased from Joe Egan’s coveted collection, including a book, a movie poster

and a sulky. Over the decades, many artifacts of historical value have been generously donated to the society. Also right from the beginning merchandise was available to purchase, including the International Stock Food Farm book, buttons, postcards, pins, cups and even a collectors crock. Proceeds from sales as well as membership dues were used to purchase brochures and giveaways such as membership cards and the Dan Patch coloring book. Fundraising was essential to help the society fulfill its mission of collection, preserving and educating. Many times every year presentations by board members are made to schools, scouts and many civic groups and organizations. Storyboards have been donated to all area schools and pictures and artifacts can be seen in many of the businesses in town. The society still raises funds and has many items for sale through its website, including four books by professional authors. The year 1992 also saw the premier of the DPHS newsletter,
which was first published in the Savage Review and is now mailed to all members, containing original writing, the latest donated memorabilia, and information on Dan Patch Days and the goings-on in the society. The society has worked with the Minnesota State Fair Board many times throughout the years, most notably in 1996 when Commonwealth Avenue was re-named Dan Patch Avenue and again extensively on the 100th anniversary of Dan breaking the pacing record at the fair in 2006. The fair gave him his own day (Dan Patch Day) and the Society had a big tent to display memorabilia and was also part of the parade. In 1996, Mayor Don Egan and his council decided to build a new Savage Public Library and it was important to them to showcase the city’s rich history. They formed a partnership with the society, which created the Heritage Room and the front display case, which now houses permanent displays of artifacts, documents and a great deal of the history of Savage.
The Horseshoe Hunt also began in ’96 in conjunction with the Dan Patch Days celebration. Through published prompts, a clue master led interested parties to public property searching for a replica of Dan’s shoe, that he threw, for a prize to accrue (sorry). Shortly after the turn of the last century, the society launched its website, www.danpatch.com. Of course these historians needed a great deal of help in this technological endeavor. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of the society began in 2001 with efforts to bring the historic Savage Depot back from Murphy’s Landing. The Depot had closed in 1970 and was moved to the landing in 1973. The closing and tear down of both the Dan Patch Lounge and the Savage Municipal Liquor Store provided a town square site perfect for repurposing the 1880 structure. After selling commemorative personalized engraved bricks, receiving monetary donations and a generous donation of labor and materials from project manager and board member Rob Fendler, in July 2006 the Depot
finally returned home. Over the years the Society has worked closely on projects with the Minnesota, Scott County, Carver County and Bloomington historical societies, Canterbury Park and Running Aces racetracks, the Minnesota Racing Commission, the Scott County and Wisconsin State Fairs, the Hambletonian Society, the Minnesota Harness Racing Hall of Fame as well as authors. Debra Savage is a descendant of M.W. and a sculptor working on a project called the Dan Patch Project for a statue of Dan Patch at the State Fairgrounds and a statue of Dan Patch and Mr. Savage at the Savage Public Library. The Dan Patch Historical Society currently has about 60 members from Hawaii in the Pacific to Florida on the Atlantic, even a former member from England. This team of historians still has a passion for continuing its mission; we thank you for your continued support and welcome any and all to share in this mission and join the fun! Jim Ross is a lifelong resident of Savage and a Board Member of the Dan Patch Historical Society. 2017 - 2018 | savagepacer.com
