Shakopee Mdewakanton Dakota Wacipi (Pow Wow) Delight your senses at this unmatched local cultural event
I
f you’re looking for a cultural experience unlike any other, the annual Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Wacipi (Pow Wow) will be right up your alley. The Pow Wow is held Aug. 15-17, and the public is welcome to experience the beauty and dignity of Native American culture at this extraordinary event. Your senses will be delighted by the singers with their drums, dancers in spectacular regalia and the smell of frybread in the air. The word “Wacipi” (wah-chee-pee) in the Dakota language translates as “they dance.” Its more common meaning is a “Pow Wow,” a social gathering where dancers in regalia and singers at the drum perform as their ancestors did for many generations. Thousands will gather in August to dance, sing and celebrate the Dakota culture at the Wacipi. Dancers will wear beautiful custom-designed regalia, combining natural and handmade elements for their specific dance style. Men and boys who dance the traditional style wear Eagle feather bustles and head dresses, leggings, buckskin or cloth pants and shirts and bells while carrying dance sticks, shields or fans. Women and girls who dance wear traditional garments or carry fringed shawls, beaded capes, moccasins, buckskin or cloth dresses and carry fans or decorative, beaded purses.
There is a free program that describes Pow Wow etiquette, dance styles and more. Pow Wow etiquette dictates specific rules for behavior at the event: no drugs or alcohol are allowed. Regalia or drums are not to be touched. Visitors are asked to show respect during Grand Entry and Honor Songs by standing and removing their hats, and by honoring the “no photography rule” if announced. The highlight of the Pow Wow is the Grand Entry, when the hundreds of dancers enter the arena following the Eagle feather staffs and flags to open each session. After Grand Entry, Tiny Tots (children ages 6 and under) in regalia are always a crowd favorite. Babies in their parents’ arms and toddlers with their older siblings will move in time with the beat. Later, elders will dance strong and straight — drawing energy from the Pow Wow circle. Then the contest dancing begins. Dancers from across the country compete in many different dance categories for thousands of dollars in prize money. Vendors will have crafts, pottery, jewelry, clothing, beadwork, artwork, food and more for sale. Traditional moccasin games will also be part of the Wacipi. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Pow Wow begins with Grand Entry

Chanhassen Dinner Theatres The place to be for outstanding shows and concerts
C
hanhassen Dinner Theatres, the nation’s largest professional dinner theater company, is spending the summer under the sea with its production of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid.” The play, rooted in a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, is set in a magical, undersea kingdom in which a young mermaid longs to leave her ocean home to live on land. “It’s a challenge to inject creativity and ingenuity into a stage musical that’s been adapted from a highly-popular animated film,” said CDT Director Michael Brindisi. “When you’re recreating something like this for the stage, the trick is to find a freshness to distance it from the animation and give it a life of its own.” A big dose of ingenuity comes with the costumes, whimsy and sets that transform the stage into an undersea world. The watery, tropical colors spill on and off the stage, as characters frequently perform amid the audience. “The Little Mermaid” runs through August 30, after which the theatre is showcasing Broadway hit “Hello Dolly” from Sept. 5, 2014, through Feb. 20, 2015. The summer months will also be brimming with plenty of entertainment from the CDT’s

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Discovering nature in the Twin Cities
T
he Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s summer exhibit, “Butterflies Beauty in Flight,” is sure to delight anyone who
visits. The exhibit runs from May through Aug. 17 and is located in the Myer-Deats Conservatory. The conservatory will be filled with live butterf lies native to Minnesota. Check the Arboretum’s website for special butterfly release days throughout the summer! The Arboretum also offers free family weekends, providing family-friendly fun activities from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Each month features a different theme specific to the changing seasons: Hungry Caterpillars in June, Nectar Sippers in July, Prairie Pollinators in August and Soggy Bog Plants in September. The Arboretum’s Oswald Visitor Center is home to a soaring Great Hall, cafeteria-style restaurant, art gallery and gift store. Serving as a formal entry point to the Arboretum, the Visitor Center is an information hub to help guests plan their day. It is also home to the Yard & Garden
Desk, a source of expert plant and pest advice and plant identification. In the adjacent Snyder Building, visitors will discover the Andersen Horticultural Library with its extensive collection of books and periodicals on topics of botany, horticulture and natural history. Located just west of the Oswald Visitor Center, the Marion Andrus Learning Center offers kid-friendly nature displays, a “please-touch” greenhouse and Under the Oak nature play area. No trip to the Arboretum is complete without a journey through the permanent Maze Garden. Nestled in the pine collection on Three-Mile Drive, the garden sets a new standard in maze design, offers an invitation to wander and provides an emerald-green place to play. The maze includes a children’s route with a lookout tower where parents can watch their young explorers. For a moment of quiet inspiration or a great day with the family, this season is the perfect time to enjoy the Arboretum — the largest public garden in the upper Midwest.

H
ave you always wanted to take one of those wildlife adventure tours? Look no further than the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is one of the premier areas for birding in Minnesota and is part of the National Audubon’s Minnesota River Valley Birding Trail. The Refuge is an important area for migrating birds. For centuries, waterfowl, songbirds and birds of prey have stopped in the Minnesota River Valley for food, water and rest while on their spring and fall journeys. Established in 1976, the Refuge provides critical habitat for these migrants, and for resident birds and mammals. The ability to view the return of migrating birds in an urban area is a unique and special opportunity. The Refuge provides hiking trails for wildlife viewing and photography. It also provides a variety of volunteer guided bird hikes and nature walks on all of the Refuge Units. And, it provides three photo

footed penguins arrived at the Zoo to make their new home in “Penguins of the African Coast.” The exhibit is the first part of a threephased “Heart of the Zoo” construction project, set for completion in 2015. The $20-million phase also includes repurposing the long-vacant whale pool as an indoor theater and construction of a new environmental education center. Other “Heart of the Zoo” projects include a new visitor center, African Kopje exhibit, snow monkey enclosure and more outdoor wildlife (2014-15).
