ontractors are stomping all over the house, there’s a pile of sawdust where the garage floor used to be, and—oops!—a plumber’s leg just crashed through a light fixture in the family room ceiling, leaving a gaping hole into the master bath upstairs. Homeowner Samantha Hofer isn’t fazed in the least. “This is cool,” she says, relaxing at the dining room table after assuring herself that the plumber is OK. “It’s kind of a dream come true.” It’s not the chaos itself that Hofer is enjoying, but the end result. Within a week, she and her husband, Justin, will be the proud owners of a completely remodeled, state-of-theart master bathroom, outfitted with such magazineworthy features as a wet bar, track lighting along the floor, a bathtub that would have suited Czar Nicholas II and a huge shower, complete with a waterproof TV built into one wall. What’s more, they’re getting it all for free. The Hofers, who bought their Shakopee home last September, will be the featured couple on this fall’s season opener of “Bath Crashers,” the DIY network’s reality show starring Falcon Heights contractor Matt Muenster. For those who haven’t seen “Bath Crashers,” Muenster and his team of contractors prowl the aisles of Lowe’s home remodeling stores, walking up to people in the plumbing department and asking about their do-it-yourself plans. In each episode, one lucky homeowner is selected for a free bathroom upgrade, with the results guaranteed to be jaw-dropping (this is TV, after all).

“It’s a great job,” Muenster says in the understated fashion for which he’s become well known. There’s no shortage of homeowners who want to be featured on his program—the retail value of the master bath project in the Hofers’ home is about $45,000—so he has the privilege of “selecting the coolest people we want to work with. “And believe me,” he adds with a grin, “when you’re doing this to someone’s house, you definitely want to work with someone who’s cool about it.” After five years on television, Muenster may be the most famous bathroom contractor in the United States. But he didn’t set out to be a famous remodeling expert. In fact, he didn’t set out to be a remodeler at all. Muenster learned to be handy early on; he grew up on a Wisconsin farm where “stuff broke down constantly; dad was always Mr. Fixit,” if only out of necessity. But that didn’t translate into a career choice for Muenster until, as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he stumbled onto a course in architectural history. “I was just scrambling, taking electives, trying to figure out what to do with my life and justify the money my parents were spending on my education.” But the class, taught by Narcisco Menocal, an elderly Cuban refugee with a striking English

accent, caught Muenster’s imagination. “He was passionate about it, and I became passionate about it through him,” Muenster recalled. “I’ve got a book of his still sitting here. I was in his class, suddenly interested in stuff I never knew existed. That class became a springboard. There wasn’t an architecture degree in Madison, and I wasn’t going to leave … interior design was the next best thing.” A f ter g raduating from UW-M, Muenster got his feet wet designing restaurants and casinos and played a role in “the Angolan Project”— the design for an ambitious capitol building in the south African country (fortunately, he says, the project was never built, as “they have more important things to spend their money on in Angola.”) Muenster’s interest eventually shifted to the residential market, which brought him to the Twin Cities. He was working as a designer and project manager for Ramsey Engler Ltd., a highend interior design firm in Minneapolis, when the phone rang and the voice on the line asked, “Is this Matt with the sideburns?” The voice belonged to a producer for HGTV’s “Decorating Cents,” who, needing a local designer for a guest appearance, did a Google search for “interior designer Minneapolis” and came up with a photo of Muenster. “It just fell into my lap.

underfoot yet resists water like concrete. It’s immediately apparent why the Hofers were chosen for the show; they’re a 30-ish, attractive professional couple expecting their first child, their master bathroom fit the show’s parameters (“big and ugly”) and they’re even DIY channel enthusiasts who like to spend Saturday mornings watching the various remodeling programs and talking about their own ideas. When they bought the Shakopee house last year, they knew the master bathroom needed updating, but “we figured we’d get around to that in maybe 20 years,” Samantha laughed. In each episode of “Bath Crashers,” the homeowners participate by coming up with their own do-it-yourself project; Samantha worked with the contractors on track lighting along the floor that gives the room a comfortingyet-space-age feel. Husband Justin and Muenster worked together on a wet bar made of black walnut, sanded down to a smooth-as-glass finish and covered with epoxy, and topped off by a wine rack, “made from the wood pallet that the new toilet came out of.” “We were just going to throw it in the dumpster anyway, so instead, we took a propane torch and burned the wood, blackening it up” to match the walnut bar top. Impressive as the results are, the Hofers’ new bath

I was just scrambling, taking “electives, trying to figure out what to do with my life and justify the money my parents were spending on my education. MATT MUENSTER It was never something I’d thought about. I’m a closet introvert. I was the kid who never did a high school play, any of that stuff. But they were persistent; we shot a little video, did a demo of me, and sent it to the network.” The demo was impressive enough to land Muenster a spot on the show, which led to his own program, “Bathtastic,” focusing on inexpensivebut-impressive bathroom remodels. And that, in turn, led to “Bath Crashers,” as well as guest shots on DIY’s “Blog Cabin,” regular appearances at home and garden shows across the country, media coverage ranging from Twin Cities Live to The New York Times, and later this year, a line of “Matt Muenster Collection” vanities available through wholesalers. And yet, even with more than 150 televised bathroom remodels under his tool belt, Muenster still seems genuinely bemused by his success. “One of the side effects” of fame is “a loss of anonymity. For me, it’s been kind of a struggle” to be recognized while going about the

ordinary business of life. “I definitely didn’t get into this under the auspices of wanting to be recognized,” he said. In an effort to keep his celebrity status and private life separate, Muenster politely declines to answer questions about his family and home (for the record, he’s married, has one child and lives in a ‘60s-era home—with a yet-tobe-renovated bathroom—not far from the Minnesota State Fairgrounds). “It’s all very flattering and very nice, but at the end of the day, I’m still a farm kid from Wisconsin. I’m on TV but it’s not who I am,” he said. And, though Muenster says he’s long since learned to be at ease with the cameras rolling, “I had to fake it for a long time,” he said. There’s nothing fake about the Hofers’ enthusiasm for their new bathroom. The old, ugly Jacuzzi tub has been replaced by a sleek, modern work of art with lines like a Boeing 787; the floor has been updated with a faux wood “luxury vinyl” that’s soft

doesn’t begin to compare with some of the over-thetop remodels dreamed up by Muenster and his crew. He recalls with particular pride the bathroom designed for a guard at California’s Folsom Prison. The man was a motorcycle fan, so his new vanity is a redesigned 1972 Honda two wheeler, with a drain where the gas tank used to be. And “we knocked out an exterior wall to build an outdoor shower,” leading to the existing backyard swimming pool. “I remember thinking, ‘OK, we’re going to jump the shark on this one and get canceled right now.’ But it turned out really well,” he said. Muenster’s favorite project was more modest in scope, but powerful in the impact it had on the homeowners’ lives. “Taylor U llrich was 22 years old, he was in a wheelchair. I think he had CP (cerebral palsy). His dad had given him every shower he’d ever taken in his life,” partly because the bathroom was too small for Taylor’s wheelchair, with a “completely dated tub that no one ever used. “By the time we were done, Taylor had the ability to take a shower on his own … he got some of his dignity back, as did his father. “ T hat one was beyond just a renovation update,” Muenster said. “We left there saying, ‘Their life is going to be a lot better as a result of what we did.’”

COMPLETE STORM RESTORATION

A Time for Renewal BY AMY REA Let’s be honest: 2014 kicked off with a miserable winter. The good news is, even if it feels like it lasts forever, it really doesn’t. What could feel better after a long, cold, snowy, sleety season than to get outdoors and work in the yard? Caution – it’s actually possible to start digging in too early. If you bring out the rake and attack the yard while it’s still damp from melting snow and spring rains, you could do more harm than good. Once things have dried out, clean up the winter debris from your yard, seed in spots that have seen damage, and replace old mulch with a thick new layer

that will help protect the root systems of trees and bushes. But once you’ve gotten winter’s debris under control, you might find yourself wanting to spruce up your yard, front or back, and find some new ideas to make that outdoor space more usable. Eric Baldus from Terravista Landscape Design says that the movement towards viewing the yard as an outdoor room continues to grow. “We’re getting more and more interests in the outdoor room concept, outdoor dining, outdoor kitchens,” he said. But one of the ways to really create that living space is through the use of landscape lighting. “A good landscape lighting plan creates a scene,

and it extends the boundary of your yard,” Baldus said. “Otherwise you can only see your landscaping during the day, but with good lighting, you can extend the time you can enjoy it, and you can still enjoy it when you’re indoors.” He notes that security lights, like motion detector lights, don’t provide the cozy atmosphere of more understated landscaping lights, which also provide an element of security. “Security lights are more like an interrogation room,” he said. “Landscaping lights are more welcoming, while still deterring the kind of visitors you don’t want.” Read this story in full online at www.shakopeenews. com.

e all aspire to have ultra-organized closets that could be featured on the cover of a magazine, but these aspirations don’t always match reality. You can make your closet dreams come true, though, with just a little hard work and creative thinking.

Since most closets are rather small, it is vital to utilize space efficiently. Tiffany Hanken of Tiffany Hanken Design in Minneapolis says one of the best ways to do this is to add shelving and drawers to your closet. You might also consider raising the hanging rack and installing a second, lower rack to maximize hanging space. But before delving into

any of that, you need to take inventory of your belongings. “G et a closet edit by a professional,” Hanken suggests. “They just go through your closet and figure out the things you don’t wear. I also think organizing your clothes by color is a huge thing, because then you know exactly what you’re wearing and what you’re not more often than not.”

Hanken suggests doing a closet clean-out after each season. During this filtering process, it’s a good idea to package up any items that should be in storage so they aren’t adding unnecessary clutter. While it may be more timeconsuming than throwing everything in a box and putting it in the basement, Hanken says it’s a good idea to buy plastic bins for storage. They will keep your belongings in good condition, and you can label them so you can easily find items later. “If you’re storing other things in your closet besides apparel, assess what that is and see if there’s a better space in the home for it,” says Greg Clark of Vivid Interior Design in Minneapolis. “Most homes have another storage space you can put these items in.” If you’re part of a couple sharing a closet, or if your closet is particularly tiny, you might want to seriously consider installing a second rack for hanging clothes. Clark says this is a common design tactic to buy more space. “A big one is having two rows of hanging clothes instead of one,” Clark says. “When we design a closet … we like to provide jewelry drawers, shoe shelves, and other drawers and cabinets that will fit whatever they are holding well to maximize on space.” Hanken likes to use small baskets for littler items like jewelry, belts and other accessories. I nsta l li ng d rawers be neath the hanging clothes, or even buying plastic drawers to place there, is always a good idea so you don’t need a dresser. This will help maximize space outside of your closet, as well. “In terms of a dresser, I feel like the sizes of spaces are downsizing. It’s not about each person having a huge dresser anymore,” Hanken explains. “You conserve your closet space as much as you can. Then you have specific things in your night stand and just a dresser for shirts (if you need it).” If your linen closet is stuffed with toiletries, old bottles of shampoo and your collection of perfume, you might want to rethink your tactics. A linen closet is the place for your bathroom towels, extra bed linens and blankets. Prioritize the space in

TIPS FOR DECLUTTERING:  Go through your clothes after each season and donate what you no longer wear.  Empty your closets of random storage and put it in the garage or basement.  Package and label apparel you want to save in plastic bins and put in storage.

your linen closet for these items and throw out any old toiletries that are taking up space. You can put the remaining toiletries in baskets like Hanken suggested for jewelry and accessories in the bedroom closet. “We suggest storing toiletries in the bathroom cabinet or with other storage, and additional towels and bed linens in the linen closet,” Clark says. A good way to maintain organization in your closet is to constantly think of it like another room of the house, Hanken says. If your closet doesn’t have a light, have one installed or buy a touch light for it. Just by having the ability to see everything in your closet, you will feel more organized. “Lighting is huge,” Hanken says. “W hen you can see what’s in your closet, it makes it less frustrating every day.” H a n ken a l s o su g ge st s painting the closet a fun color or hanging a painting. If it feels like another room in the house, you will treat it as such and likely stay organized for longer. Overall, you have to be dedicated to the organization cause. It’s easy before work at 6 a.m. just let things get disheveled, but as long as you keep up with hanging and folding things, you’ll be fine. “The best way is to organize, and take the time to fold, keep things neat, and have designated places for specific items,” Clark says.

In Search of ‘Just Right’ BY BRITT JOHNSEN I n a t a le s c r ib e d s or t of like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, I once moved to four different cities in two years, trying to find a place that was “just right.” When I moved to Eagan, M i n n. i n t he su m mer of 2011, all I had was a small suitcase and my purse. I arrived to my new apartment in the southeast Twin Cities suburb, new job as a local news editor, and my new roommate, who I actually hadn’t met until I moved in. One of my closest friends went to meet him after I saw the Craigslist post. She said Tony was a nice guy. He was a nice guy. He was easy to talk to and he had a kind heart. Seeing that I had no bed, no furniture, and really no stuff (except the bed, clothes and books I had left behind at my last apartment in Winona, Minn.), Tony wanted to help until I could retrieve my things from two hours south of the Twin Cities. He loaned me a foam mattress protector and a sheet, which smelled

like men’s cologne. It was unfamiliar, but it worked. The move to Eagan had been rushed. Before that I had been living and working as a writer, yoga teacher and server at a bed and breakfast in Winona. I had made this move to try and figure out how to make a life out of mixing my passions. I had been spending my days as a newspaper reporter and editor in St. Cloud, Minn., a nd sp end i n g my n i g ht s b eg i n ni ng to st udy yoga and holistic health. I didn’t know exactly how my new life would look, but I was excited to explore it. I needed a change and was convinced this move would give me exactly what I needed. But the plan didn’t work very well. Actually, it failed miserably. I made barely enough money to live on. So when I decided I needed a more stable job again, I found a gig as editor of an online news operation in Eagan, I was thrilled - even though my training in New York was the day after my childhood best friend’s wedding, where I was the maid of honor. Hey, it was a job, I

thought. I did what needed to be done. But my stay in Eagan also didn’t last long. My job demanded unsustainably long hou rs a nd my Craigslist roommate eventually drove me nut s. A f t er t he newroommate niceness wore off, he began blaring late-night T V at u nu su a l volu me s. And the kitchen constantly smelled like a mix of boiled eggs and sardines and dirty dishes. For a veget a ria n who wanted to work normal hours, have quiet evenings and go to sleep by 10 p.m., such a roommate could never work for me. To be fair, I was probably not an easy roommate to have for his taste, either. No matter who was “right,” I knew I needed another change. So I did what anyone under incredible stress would do: Break my lease, pack up my bags, hand in my resignation and take the next job I could get. Alas, St. Paul didn’t do the trick, either. Ultimately unsatisfied and tired of calling my landlord (a nd t he c ops) ab out my noisy upst ai rs neig hbor, I was starting to feel like

G oldi locks i n G oldi locks and the Three Bears. Except in my story, the third time was not the charm. Part of me wondered if I should give up my search and accept things the way they were. But I thought I would give my happiness one more shot. Luckily for me, the fourth

time was “just right.” I arr ive d home i n Sh a kop e e after getting a job at Southwe st Newsp ap er s . I l ive about two minutes from the office. I have to admit that it’s not always perfect. But isn’t that what “just right” is all about? Sometimes a compromise is necessary in the

Home Furnishings & Floor Coverings

pursuit of happiness. And sometimes you just have to try living with a guy you don’t know who turns out to love loud TV and sardines. Always, though, you have to draft your own life story, w riti ng a nd erasi ng a nd rewriting until you get it just right.
