some of them new ideas, while others are old but refined. Though hybrids are the rage, car builders have found ways to make vehicles running on old-fashioned gasoline do new mileage tricks. “Some of these might not necessarily be new technology, but today’s computercontrolled technology allows them to be brought to bear,” said Shane Stenberg, a salesman at Valley Sales, a Chevrolet and Buick dealer in Hutchinson. “The technology is so accelerated in our industry,” added Gerald Plendl, service manager at Jay Malone Motors, a Ford, Mercury, Chrysler and Jeep dealer in Hutchinson. “A lot of the technology that was used in small cars a few years ago is now being used in the trucks. It is just going to continue to accelerate.” Writing for CNET, Wayne Cunningham identified 11 technologies automakers are starting to use to reduce fuel consumption. Some have been around for years, or

even decades, or came out of racing applications where the goal is not only power and speed, but improved fuel economy to lessen the need for pit stops. The 11 include: direct injection, turbocharging, deceleration fuel shut-off, cylinder deactivation, idle stop, brake regeneration, lock-up clutch for automatic transmission, dual-clutch transmission, continuously variable transmission, electric power steering and electric air conditioning.

What’s here and coming The last two are designed to have electric motors handle vehicle functions that previously were powered directly from the gasoline engine through belts, vacuums and hydraulics. Most manufacturers are moving to electric power-steering systems. Though electric air conditioning is mainly used in hybrids, with their added electrical supply, makers of gas-power vehicles are looking for ways to make the systems more efficient for wider applications. “Anything that drives off the engine cuts mileage,” Malone’s Plendl said. Chevrolet has a growing fleet of vehicles labeled Eco or eAssisted that place an emphasis using technology and new

materials to drive fuel economy to new levels. They make use of a variety of fuel saving technologies in different combinations. For example, the Cruze, a compact car introduced a couple of years ago, has an Eco version that uses a turbocharger to a get a boost of power from 1.4-liter or 1.8liter engines. They have an EPA highway mileage rating of 42. Another Eco model is in the Malibu line of mid-sized Chevys just arriving at dealers as 2013 models. It uses an electric motor, called eAssist, to get the boost the Cruse gets from a turbocharger, Stenberg said. Its Ecotec 2.4L direct injection 4-cylinder engine is mated with a 15-kilowatt electric motor generator to conserve fuel when it's not needed. The car switches automatically from gas to energy in a lithium-ion battery to power accessories when the vehicle is brought to a stop, such as at a stop sign. The motor-generator brings the engine to a smooth stop and prepares

it for a seamless, almost instantaneous start when the brake pedal is released. An integrated driver information center displays when and where the battery is supporting the powertrain. The result is an EPA highway mileage rating of 37. The Buick Lacrosse uses eAssist technology to achieve 36 mpg from a full-size luxury sedan. The eAssist technology captures energy in the battery using regenerative breaking. The Chevrolet Equinox, an all-wheel or front-wheel drive crossover, has an Eco button that changes the algorithm of the transmission. It gives greater fuel efficiency at a small sacrifice in power, Stenberg said.

Cylinder shutdown pioneer Cadillac was a pioneer in the use of cylinder deactivation. That technology shuts down some of a gas engine’s cylinders when their power is not needed, such as at highway cruising speed. Chevrolet used the technology in some

Wheels & Water 5 early Trailblazers, Stenberg said, when equipped with the 5.3-liter V-8 engine. The Active Fuel Management feature shut off four of the eight cylinders at highway speeds. Thus, several General Motors products are making use of several of the technologies Cunningham listed. But their use obviously isn’t limited to GM. Ford started using deceleration fuel shut-off technology used now in GM’s LaCrosse and Malibu several years ago, and continues it in such vehicles as the 2011 Lincoln MKX. Dual-clutch transmission, which has evolved from its racing roots, is used in such vehicles as the Ford Fiesta. The time required for a human driver to work a manual clutch pedal is eliminated. Also used in Ford vehicles is variable valve timing, or VVT, said Jay Malone service technician John Engfer. It allows control of a vehicle’s cams separately, improving efficiency. “I’ve been with Ford since 1999,” Engfer said, “and I go back to school almost three or four times a year.” “And that’s mostly for the new technology,” Plendl added.

10 tips for vehicle maintenance o keep your car on the road to safety and savings, now is a good time to make sure that it’s in the best condition. “Now is the time for motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in shape,” said Jim Sassorossi, head of Product Development at Mopar, Chrysler Group’s service, parts and customer-care brand. "The safety, performance and life of a vehicle hinge on preventive maintenance." Here are hints on how: Check brakes: Brakes are one of the most used (and often abused) components on a car. A thin layer of the brake pad disintegrates every time the brakes are applied. Replace pads or shoes before drums or rotors become damaged. Check pads, shoes, drums, rotors, calipers, fit-

T

tings, brake hardware and the parking brake to prevent problems. Check tires: Check air pressure on all tires, including the spare. Improper tire pressure leads to premature wear and a decrease in fuel mileage. The entire surface of the tire, both tread and sidewall, should be inspected for uneven or irregular wear. Check lights: Inspect and test all exterior lamps and lights, including turn signals and hazard lights, to ensure that they are in proper working order and alignment. Check air filter: The air filter is one of the unsung heroes of a vehicle, as it protects the engine from airborne contaminants. Replacing a dirty air filter helps ensure proper performance and longer life. Check oil: Oil is the lifeblood of the engine. Engine oil level should be

changed and replenished regularly. Check all fluid levels: Dirty or low flu C ids may affect the performance of a vehicle and can lead to breakdowns if not properly monitored and filled. Check engine belts, hoses and fuel C filter: Prevent breakdowns or serious engine damage and maximize fuel economy. Check battery: Look for corroded terminals and inspect for a bulging or cracked case. Check shocks and struts: They're vital for a smooth ride and optimal handling and may affect other vehicle parts. Check wiper blades: Properly functioning wiper blades increase visibility. To alert you when it's time for a change, Mopar all-season wiper blades feature an innovative wear indicator that gradually turns from black to green to yellow as the blades wear. Mopar is a contraction of MOtor and PARts. While it's Chrysler Group's service, parts and customer-care brand, an alliance with Magneti Marelli enables Chrysler Group dealerships to service vehicles for GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and Kia. hen the chatter of your wiper blades is louder than the kids in the backseat, you know it's time to change your wiper blades, and you may even add it to a pre-road-trip to-do list. But why wait? Instead, make inspecting wiper blades part of your regular vehicle safety inspection. Spending a few minutes with your car now can help you enjoy safer driving this summer. More than a deep wash to get winter’s salt and grime away, maintenance items on a car checklist should include inspecting and repairing items that wear over time. Routine items to check include: tire pressure fluid levels air-conditioning and engine cooling systems hoses and filters turn signal indicators headlights, taillights and running lights wiper blades, one of the simplest things to inspect. Nationally recognized automotive expert Lauren Fix, “The Car Coach,” knows that an estimated 90 percent of a motorist's driving decisions are based on how well he or she sees the road. Fix and her daughter, “Teen Car Coach” Shelby Fix, agree that checking

W

wiper blades is one of the easiest ways to improve your family’s road safety. As Shelby writes, “A dirty windshield could cause big problems. If you can't see where you are going, it’s dangerous to everyone. Get a new set of wiper blades … they are worth it.” Properly maintained wiper blades are simply an easy, low-cost way to help ensure the clearest sight line in a rainstorm and improve driving safety. Industry experts recommend checking blades periodically and replacing them about every six months.

Tool helps car shoppers compare vehicles niversity of Minnesota Extension energy economist Doug Tiffany has developed a new tool to help car-shopping consumers answer the common question, “Should I buy an alternative vehicle?” Accessible online, the free tool helps consumers more easily navigate the differences in the costs of ownership and operation and greenhouse gas emissions among four car types: conventional, hybrid, electric and extended range electric vehicles. By entering information for each type of vehicle they are considering, shoppers can test various scenarios, such as higher gasoline prices and miles driven per year. “It’s not just about price, personal taste, miles per gallon, interior space and other physical features,” Tiffany said. “The wide availability of alternative vehicles — along with consumer interest in lessening one’s environmental impact — can complicate the car purchase decision even further.”

U

The tool is meant to help consumers better analyze the factors that go into their purchase decision. It accurately evaluates newer models such as the Nissan Leaf (electric) and Chevy Volt (extended range electric), conventional cars and common hybrids, like the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic and others. Key input factors include vehicle price, miles per gallon or miles per kilowatt hour performance, the expectation of fuel prices for the life of the car, and the number of miles per year the consumer expects to drive. Tiffany said he was first inspired to create the tool in 2009, when gasoline prices were lower, but the sting from gas prices during the summer of 2008, as high as $4 per gallon in many areas, lingered. “I’m happy to help people balance their personal and altruistic goal of greenhouse gas emissions reductions and petroleum conservation within the reality of their own lives and budgets,” he said. “I hope people who use the tool learn that the

The all-electric Nissan Leaf, according to the alternative vehicle decision tool offered by the University of Minnesota, is the least expensive of all automobiles to operate over 15 years. ownership costs of vehicles are often more important than the operational costs (primarily gasoline), unless you drive enough miles per year.”

For more information on the alternative vehicle tool, including a tutorial video and information on interpreting results, see extension.umn.edu/energy/vehicle.

Eight ways to lower your insurance costs THE INSURANCE INFORMATION INSTITUTE IN NEW YORK OFFERS TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR INSURANCE PAYMENTS Comparison shop. Shop for both fair prices and excellent service. Narrow the field by asking friends and relatives about their rates and checking the survey in the back of this guide for an estimate of rates. Ask for higher deductibles. Deductibles are the amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance company covers a claim. By increasing your deductible from $200 to $500, you could reduce your collision and comprehensive coverage cost by 15 percent to 30 percent. Drop collision and/or comprehensive coverage on older cars. For cars worth less than $1,000, it may not be worthwhile to carry collision or comprehensive coverage. Your

deductible may be equal to or more than the amount you pay for this coverage. Eliminate duplicate medical coverage. If you have health insurance already, you may be duplicating your coverage by paying for medical coverage on your auto policy. Buy a low-profile car. Cars with high incidences of collision or theft, or those that are associated with a high rate of injury, may cost more to insure than those considered safer or less sought after by thieves. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety can send you a report comparing more than 100 cars’ rates of collision, injury and theft. Some insurers offer discounts to motorists who drive less than a predetermined number of miles per year. Find out about automatic seat belt or air-bag discounts. You may receive a discount for having these safety devices. Ask about other discounts. Other possible discounts may be given for owning more than one car, having no accidents in three years, being more than 50 years old, taking driver training courses, installing antitheft devices, having anti-lock brakes, being a nonsmoker and even being a good student.

Put old car on road to giving, getting DONATING A VEHICLE PROVIDES MANY ADVANTAGES FOR CAR OWNER, AS WELL AS FOR ORGANIZATION RECEIVING THE GIFT

T

What an old car can do Donating a car can generate enough cash to: Supply a month’s worth of food for a family of five, Provide more than two years’ worth of generic drugs to a senior citizen, Support education, medical research and youth programs,

Help rescue animals from neglect and abuse.

What you can get Besides the good feeling you get from helping others, you can benefit in another way — because donated vehicles qualify as charitable gifts, you may be eligible for a tax deduction. If your vehicle sells for less than $500, you can claim up to $499. If it sells for more than $500, you can deduct the actual sale price. Most vehicle donation programs provide full service, including free pickup coordination, processing of the paperwork and sending you completed tax forms.

What the world gets Recycling the metal from old vehicles saves energy, conserves natural resources

What many people don’t get Surprisingly, although vehicle donation programs have been around for years, many people don’t know much about them or how easy it can be to donate. Nearly

three out of four Americans made charitable contributions in the last five years. Sixtynine percent donated cash, 67 percent donated used goods and 47 percent donated time. Only 6 percent donated a used vehicle. In fact, four in 10 respondents said they were lacking the information and understanding of the overall benefits and process of vehicle donation. A national vehicle donation program called One Car One Difference was launched to help dispel common misperceptions about the value and ease of vehicle donation.

and reduces the pollution that can come from steel production. According to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, recycling one car conserves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone. Thanks to the salvage auction industry, the nation sees significant energy and environmental savings by recycling old materials, such as aluminum and steel, rather than relying on creating those materials from scratch and using precious resources from the environment. Annually, more than 1.7 million tons of steel and more than 268,000 tons of aluminum are recycled. This eliminates the need to manufacture such metals and translates to a reduction in landfill space in one year that would equal all 31 NFL football stadiums filled 12 feet deep.

The best vehicles to fit your needs he next time you’re in the market for a new car or truck, you may wonder what’s hot and what’s not. What seals the deal for many buyers is the ability to individualize and personalize a vehicle. While the $28 billion annual automotive customization market offers thousands of products to transform any car or truck, some models offer more options for personalization than others. One way to learn which cars and trucks are the most accessory friendly is to check out the SEMA Award winners, presented annually by the Specialty Equipment Market Association. Whether you want to create a high-performance sports car or a rugged truck worthy of off-roading, these awards can help you identify which vehicles have the greatest potential for customization. “Each year, manufacturers from the specialty and performance industry come to the SEMA Show with an array of new products and new styling trends displayed on the cars and trucks they view as the most popular trend-setting models,” said

T

Chris Kersting, SEMA’s president and CEO. “The SEMA Award taps into the exhibitors’ unique ability to identify what’s hot, just as the trends are gaining momentum.” This year’s awards were presented to the Chevrolet Camaro for the Hottest Car, the Fiat 500 for the Hottest Sport Compact, the Ford F-Series for the Hottest Truck and the Jeep Wrangler for the Hottest 4x4-SUV.

With beautiful Italian styling, timeless functionality, fuel efficiency and innovative technology — the same attributes that made the original version an icon — the 2012 Fiat 500 is relevant for an entirely new generation of drivers.

The Jeep Wrangler was named the Hottest 4x4-SUV for the second consecutive year. Custom parts and accessories for the Jeep Wrangler remain in high demand as owners look for ways to make their Wranglers more their own. Enthusiasm for the Wrangler has lead to its winning of multiple industry awards, including the SEMA Most Accessory-Friendly SUV in 2007.

Forcier, owner and chief executive officer of Ultimate Boat Wraps and Crow River Signs in Hutchinson. “There’s no reason to get a new boat, but they want it to look better.” Forcier began working with boat wraps, which he saw as a natural extension of the sign work his Crow River Signs business was already doing, about five years ago. He attended an intensive training session on wraps, which were being used for cars and trucks, buildings and other objects. But when the instructor mentioned wrapping boats, Forcier — a big fan of water sports — saw an opportunity. After gaining experience with wraps — his father-in-law’s boat was his first job — Forcier and his wife, Jessica, who is office manager and in charge of marketing for Ultimate Boat Wraps and Crow River Signs, attended the Minneapolis Boat Show in 2010. And the business has taken off from there. While boat wraps haven’t become a huge smash on Meeker and McLeod county lakes, they are gaining in popularity everywhere, according to the Forciers. Their business has made inroads in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, where boaters appreciate the distinctive look a

First, the wraps are generally equal to or significantly lower in cost than a paint job. A typical wrap can take about a week to apply, start to finish, and will cost about $3,200, depending on the size and intricacies of the job, A.J. Forcier said. While painting some of the unique designs on boats would be costly and take a long time, creating that design digitally and printing it on the vinyl wrap material isn’t much more costly than covering a boat in a stock-look wrap, he explained. Wraps also are as durable, possibly more so, than a paint job, Forcier said, and can take the usual punishment one might receive on typical boating outings. Of course, scraping into a metal boat dock is just as likely to damage a wrap as it is to hurt a paint job, he said. While boat wraps that draw the most attention are those with high-energy, colorful graphics, sometimes an owner simply wants his boat to look the way it used to look.

condition.” For one boat, they made the accent color silver, rather than the stock gold, and recreated its original Crestliner graphics. One of the Forcier’s most noteworthy jobs was a “tank wrap” they created for a boat for Minnesota Vikings’ defensive end Jared Allen. The wrap, inspired by a M6083 tank in Veterans Memorial Park in Hutchinson, added a special touch to the boat, which was created for Allen’s Home For Wounded Warriors foundation and Minnesota Inboard Water Sports. “We wanted to have the boat look like a realistic tank on the water,” Jessica Forcier said. A.J. Forcier said that three years ago, during their first appearance at the boat show, few people stopped to inquire about the wraps. The next year brought significantly more traffic. And this year, bolstered by the tank wrap boat and show attendees’ growing understanding of wraps, the Ultimate Boat Wraps booth was buzzing with activity throughout the run of the show. “They’re really growing in popularity,” A.J. Forcier said. That’s good news for beat-up-but-stillgood boats everywhere.

Stop spread of aquatic invasive species he Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is urging boaters to take more responsibility in stopping the spread of aquatic invasive species, also known as AIS. “In the past our boating recreation messages were largely safety oriented, which is still important, but more than ever preventing the spread of AIS has become a top DNR priority,” said Col. Jim Konrad, DNR enforcement director. “We are urging boaters to take extra care when launching and loading watercraft to stop the spread of harmful AIS in Minnesota’s waterways.” Minnesota’s water resources are threatened by numerous aquatic invasive species such as zebra mussels, Eurasian watermilfoil and spiny waterfleas. These

T

species could be easily spread within the state if citizens, businesses and visitors don’t take responsible steps to contain them. “Overland transport of boats, motors, trailers and other watercraft poses the greatest risk for spreading aquatic invasive species and by taking some simple precautions citizens can minimize the risk,” Konrad said. To help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species, boaters are required by law to: Clean visible aquatic plants, zebra mussels and other prohibited species off of watercraft, trailers and equipment before leaving any water access. Drain water from the boat’s bilge, livewell, motor, ballast tanks and portable bait containers before leaving any water access or shoreline property. Keep drain plug out and water draining devices open while transporting watercraft. Minnesota law prohibits the possession or transport of any AIS in Minnesota. Conservation officers and other qualified

peace officers may stop, inspect and, if necessary, detain watercraft upon a “reasonable belief” that AIS are present. “We are asking boaters to take personal responsibility and develop a routine before and when leaving a waterway to help reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species,” Konrad said. “Remember, these are your lakes, and

Keith Evenson of rural Litchfield has owned a 1970 American Motors Javelin for nearly a quarter of a century.

“I wouldn’t have started looking for them (Javelins), but I’m glad I found it because it’s a different kind of car from the Camaros and Mustangs and things that you see so many of.” Keith Evenson, proud owner of a 1970 American Motors Javelin

After many misses, a Javelin hit the spot AMERICAN MOTORS’ MUSCLE CAR STRUCK A CHORD WITH SOME By JORGE SOSA sosa@hutchinsonleader.com here’s no nice way to say it: For decades, the nowdefunct American Motors churned out some seriously ugly cars. The Eagle. The Gremlin. The Matador. The Pacer. These names conjure horrifying images of disfigured sheet metal visages that send shivers through even the toughest gearheads. But as the saying goes, even a broken clock is right twice a day and — in 1968 — even American Motors proved it could create a thing of beauty. No ugly duckling, the Javelin and its sportier cousin, the AMX, delivered performance in a stylish package. Rural Litchfield resident Keith Evenson has owned both a Javelin and AMX and

T

can attest that the unique muscle cars are a blast to drive and show off. Sitting behind the wheel of the “Big Bad Blue” ’70 Javelin he’s owned for about 23 years, Evenson recalled the day he first saw it. He didn’t even know Javelins existed. “I wouldn’t have started looking for them,” he said, “but I’m glad I found it because it’s a different kind of car from the Camaros and Mustangs and things that you see so many of.” “My father-in-law at the time (Lyle Telkamp) had this car since it was a year old,” Evenson said. “My ex-wife (Danalee) drove it to high school.” Evenson was living in Brookings, S.D., at the time and said, “by the time I got it, it was parked in the woods behind their house.” The car had been in a crash and hadn’t been driven for three or four years. “When I got it, it was OK but it needed to be restored,” Evenson said. “(Telkamp) put a different door on it but it needed quarter panels and a new coat of paint.” Telkamp turned the car over to Evenson, who was 22 at the time. “He didn’t

even charge me for it,” Evenson recalled. “He said, ‘You can just take it.’ That was pretty cool … I put a battery and gas in it and it started right up. I aired up the tires and drove it home.” Over the years, Evenson worked on upgrading the car from its original SST (Super Sport Touring) trim level with the equivalent of the more performanceminded Go Package options. He upgraded the transmission and suspension, installed a “Twin Grip” limited-slip rear differential, replaced the original flat hood with a functioning “power blister” hood, fitted the car with front disc brakes, installed a 140-mph speedometer, aftermarket tachometer and temperature gauge, and replaced the original 304-

cubic-inch V8 with a 360. “I built the motor up,” he said. “I put a cam, headers and high-rise intake manifold on it, and I bored it out a little bit.” Evenson also owned a red AMX for about three years. “It was a fun little car,” he said. “That one had a bigger motor than this and it was a smaller car. It was a fast car.” Evenson sold the AMX to make room for other automotive projects. Also, it wasn’t quite as practical as the Javelin. The AMX lacked a back seat — an important consideration since Evenson has remarried and he and his wife, Sabrara, have three children. Two seats and growing family, he noted, “just doesn’t add up.”
