Aboriginal Happenings From Across Canada AFN lays off staff after losing health funding

OTTAWA -The Assembly of First Nations says it is forced to lay off staff after Health Canada reduced its funding by 40 per cent, making it the latest aboriginal group to feel the impact of budget cuts at the federal agency.
Health Canada was asked to make $200.6 million in cuts over three years as part of the federal budget’s review of departmental spending.
Antoine was among several former and current band council members who faced charges stemming from allegations relating to Treaty Land Entitlement money provided to the First Nation.
The AFN said in a statement Thursday the cuts will result in staff layoffs and would impact “its supportive and facilitative role in informing the development of health policies and programs for First Nations.” While AFN is not a direct deliverer of health services, it provides support to other organizations. Federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq has said her priority is to protect primary health care services. (Canadian Press) Reductions on a regional level or the impact of the cuts to AFN’s other departments are not yet known, the organization said. Employees at the organization, many at its headquarters in Ottawa, began receiving layoff notices Thursday. The AFN, which employs about 113 people,

Convicted First Nations chief wins re-election CANADA-Duane Antoine, who recently
pleaded guilty to theft charges relating to band money, has been re-elected chief of the Poundmaker Cree First Nation.
One of the other people who pleaded guilty to the theft charge, Colin Favel, was also re-elected as council member of the band, in Friday’s vote.
Band council elections were held Friday.
TLE money was paid by governments to settle a historic grievance — First Nations had been promised a certain amount of land a century ago, but never received it.
According to an election official, Antoine received 220 votes out of 448 votes cast.
Bands are supposed to use the money to buy land or for economic development.
There were three other candidates for chief and Antoine out-polled the nearest one by 74 votes.
The Poundmaker Cree First Nation is about 70 kilometres northwest of North Battleford.
In April, Antoine pleaded guilty to a charge of theft under $5,000.

GRAPHIC NOVELS: THE LITERATURE OF YOUTH
Graphic novels, a new medium and introduction to the classic world of literature, might be the next step in education. Although they do not follow the conventional medium, their reinvention of literature may be the stepping stone for some young students into the world of classic literature.

Fortunately, as some teacher’s have found, a new form of recreating the literary classics is to adapt the work as a graphic novel. The graphic novel, which is already a popular form of entertainment for teenagers, is considered by some to be a possible link to higher forms of written work. It has even become an accepted by some teachers as a method to intrigue young minds, while introducing them to classic novels and stories that are continually being reprinted and reread. Although comic books and graphic novels are originally considered to be light material, not worthy of the greater literary minds, the modern incarnation of the graphic novel has transcended this skewed view. Artists and writers have even started taking classic novels and adapting them for this medium. Even the long-established story lines of Superman, Batman, and other prototypical comics have morphed over the years and taken on more mature material and story lines. Some of the greatest adventure stories ever written have been revamped and remodeled in this new format. The villainy of Long John Silver is given a fresh life, along with the mythical horrors of Homer’s The Odyssey, and Frankenstein and his monster. There are numerous other books that have been adapted
in this manner, helping span the gap for young students who have trouble understanding literary works.

On the Table Father’s Day Pancakes INGREDIENTS 3/4 cup milk 2 tablespoons white vinegar 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons white sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 egg 2 tablespoons butter, melted cooking spray
DIRECTIONS Combine milk with vinegar in a medium bowl and set aside for 5 minutes to Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk egg and butter into “soured” milk. Pour the flour mixture into the wet ingredients and whisk until lumps are gone. Heat a large skillet over medium heat, and coat with cooking spray. Pour 1/4 cupfuls of batter onto the skillet, and cook until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip with a spatula, and cook until browned on the other side. Serve fresh and rememember to wish a Happy Father’s Day to your old man. 12

Crafts Father’s Day Camera Card Materials Clean, wide jar lid Black acrylic paint Black card stock Photo Glue dots or double-sided tape Silver paint marker INSTRUCTIONS
First, paint the inside and sides of a clean, wide jar lid (such as the lid from a peanut butter jar) with black acrylic paint and let it dry. Cut a photo to fit the inside of the lid, and attach it with glue dots or double-sided tape. Fold a half-sheet of black card stock in half, and cut two sections from the folded edge, as shown above. Add simple camera details with silver paint marker, then adhere the jar lid to the front of the card. Inside, write a camera-related message: “You’re a picture perfect dad!” or “Dad, you always make us smile.”

Autumn EagleSpeaker by Christine McFarlane cover photos by John Medeiros Please tell me a little bit about yourself, what you feel comfortable in sharing: Oki. My name is Autumn EagleSpeaker. I like to say that I am a Blackfoot Renaissance woman, mother, modern day warrior and a lover of Indigineity and current events. My grandparents are (late) Glen and Leona EagleSpeaker, my mother is Diane EagleSpeaker and my father is Michael Williams. My family is of the All Short Peoples’ Clan of Kainai (Blood) First Nation from Southern Alberta. My mother is full-blooded Native and my father is mixed; Black, Irish, Cherokee & Seminole. I am blessed to have such a rich heritage full of cultural diversity. I am a single mother of four beautiful children; Willow (14), twins Rain (5), Sky (5) and Cloud (4). My children inspire me to do more and be more every day. I grew up in Seattle, Washington but have called Calgary, Alberta my home for the past 18 years. What is your educational background? What did you study? I graduated from the University of Calgary in 2009. Originally when I started school I was interested in Political Science, but as I learned more in my studies about First Nations rights, issues and history, my
heart pulled me to study International Indigenous issues. My final topic paper was around the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and how it relates to the Canadian context for First Nations rights. I still actively volunteer for the University Native Centre as coordinator of the Annual Aboriginal Student Graduation Powwow. I hear you are very involved in Aboriginal/First Nations issues. Please tell me a little about the issues and the work you have done around them. Aboriginal/First Nations issues, rights and history are a few areas that I am really passionate about. I have been involved in this area for a number of years both personally and professionally. I was a former president of the Aboriginal People’s Commission of Alberta and I have been a long time Liberal. Personally, I am an advocate for First Nations and Treaty rights, and the rights of all Indigenous peoples globally. Over the years I have had the honour of organizing many great events to bring awareness to other Canadians such as Calgary “Day of Action”-which was a peace march and rally to bring attention to First Nations issues, and Aboriginal Women’s Vagina Monologues-which was to bring to light the topic of Aboriginal women’s sexuality, an
area still frowned upon traditionally. I strongly believe that it is valuable for Aboriginal people to participate in politics and the voting process, because Aboriginal people are the fastest growing demographic and we have a great opportunity to influence the voting so that it will help our people. The current political landscape is scary for Aboriginal people because we are still so dependent on the government for funding our people, so its important for our people to become involved so that we can sit at the decision tables as equals. We need to work together, to go beyond and learn from other Indigenous groups such as the Maoris of New Zealand, on how to further enshrine Aboriginal rights and culture into the Canadian mainstream. Professionally, I am lucky to be able to work in an area that allows me to pursue my interests as well. I work for Shell Canada in the Graduate program doing First Nations Consultation in the Athabasca (Fort McMurray) region. I work with the First Nations and Métis groups to create a dialogue around Shell’s proposed projects. Within Shell, I also act as an advocate for Aboriginal rights and ensure that these rights are respected in decisionmaking processes. What are some goals you have? And in pursuing these goals, how do you approach them? Do you have a particular motto that you go by? NEW TRIBE JUNE 2012

COMMUNITY My motto would be “Live life with no bounds. Don’t let limitations become the guidelines of your existence.” I have many goals, but one main goal I have is to be a good person. That means living by the 7 Grandfather Teachings; Love, Respect, Humility, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility and Truth, and also to be an amazing parent to my children. Professional goals include running as a candidate for Member of Parliament, because as an elected official, an MP has a great opportunity to create change within government and I feel there is no greater job than that of giving back to the people. Lastly I am also considering doing a Master’s Degree in the area of First Nations and Sustainable Development, and who knows, maybe a Ph.D. afterwards! The only one that limits you is you! What kind of obstacles have you had to overcome in order to get to where you are today? There have been many obstacles that have come across my path in life; Failing University the first time and having to sit out a year-an excellent learning lesson, being a single parent and having to be both the mother and the father role for your children, as well as the provider, and learning to live with a mental illness-I have battled depression/anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for years. What helped you to get you to where you are now?

I have a belief in myself, and deep down I knew that that I would be something BIG and no matter what, I just kept moving forward. I just believed that one-day things would get better and that I could accomplish anything. Academics also played a huge role in getting me to where I am. I am a self-proclaimed nerd and wear the badge proudly! All the studying, cramming and preparing prepared me for real life and the work place. Supports also helped and that came from many areas; family, friends, mentors, teachers, and co-workers. Did you have role models and who were they? My role models have been the change makers that have given back to the Aboriginal people through their contribution efforts of lobbying, being in government, writing the policies and speaking out. People who come to mind include Beverly Jacobs, who works in the area of advocating for the Murdered and Missing Aboriginal Women, Cindy Blackstock, who is an advocate for equal funding for First Nations children in child welfare, Blaine Favel, former FSIN Grand Chief and entrepreneur who created One Earth Farms/Resources that creates co-op like opportunities for First Nations economic development and of course the trailblazers such as Harold Cardinal, Buffy SainteMarie, Phil Fontaine and Elijah Harper. Do you consider yourself a role
model to First Nation youth in Calgary? If so, how? If not, why? It’s very humbling to think of myself as a role model. I just try to be myself, be more and do more every day to improve myself for my family. What kind of message would you like to give to other students who want to succeed? What helped you? Was there anything that you felt hindered you? First and foremost, believe in yourself! Secondly, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Thirdly, seize the opportunity to go to school. Focus and discipline yourself to excel in school. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Seeking out support from the Native Student Centre’s while I was in University really helped me feel secure within the large University setting. They provide advice, help with funding applications, and they’re great for meeting people. New Tribe Magazine is primarily focused on youth. What kind of message can you give youth that is inspirational or meaningful to help them in a good way? Life is full of choices and the outcomes of those decisions are what dictates the course of your life. To move forward in one’s life, I feel that you have to learn from the mistakes that happen, don’t continue to beat yourself up, but learn and move forward.

COMMUNITY While no two peoples’ life experiences are the same, there is something to be said about acknowledging our similarities. When considering why we are the way we are, it is sometimes overwhelming to consider all the contributing factors, and that in some of those things, we did not have a choice to make. For example, we cannot choose our families, the cultural or religious teachings used by others in our upbringing, or on a more personal level, which sex we are attracted to. Living in a world full of diversity, we are quick to label each other because we think it helps us to know where we stand in comparison to others. Our society compels us to see differences and make judgements. But, if we were to spend an equal amount of time learning about the things that make us similar, we would be more understanding and accepting of our differences. With each passing day, individuals are constantly being challenged about things they really cannot change. We are taught morals and values in our formative youth to use as a guide throughout life. This is in order to help us deal with these various challenges. So what happens when what you are actually experiencing goes against the grain of what you have been taught or what society says is acceptable? Reciprocity is important in all relationships, especially in communicating our perceptions in things around us. Making the time to reciprocate and communicate can heighten one’s outlook on a topic that might otherwise be neglected because we do not think it has a direct impact on our personal journeys. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to help a friend as she embarks on a public awareness campaign for the gay, bisexual, lesbian, queer, questioning, two-spirited and transidentified (GBLQQTT) community in Calgary. Many of us are not comfortable with sharing personal information with the public or having open conversations when it comes to matters of sexual preference for fear of being judged and/or humiliated. Together
her and I share a common belief in taking responsibility for eliminating our ignorance by asking questions and taking part in social causes that may not always be directly linked to our own lives. We believe in teaching ourselves about issues affecting the society we live in! Suzana Rymak, a 29 year old multiethnic woman that grew-up between Edmonton and Parkland County (near Enoch Cree Nation), believes that unity in the community requires acceptance of diversity and engagement. Her volunteer and employment history has included international community development, persons with disabilities, youth work, and Aboriginal culture, etcetera. Suzana began volunteering in high school, while her formal social work education began in 2003 when she began earning her Social Work Diploma from Grant MacEwan University. Suzana currently holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) from Thompson River University, and has most recently worked for Alberta’s Future Leaders, the University of Calgary N.A.P.I. Program, and is currently an Educational Advisor at DeVry Institute of Technology in Calgary. Although Suzana is not of any known Aboriginal heritage, in her heart she identifies with the cultural teachings and world view of Aboriginal people in Canada. Growing up close to a reserve, others often identifying her as Native, and having a best friend that was First Nations, she has developed a very positive view of Aboriginal people and the cultural teachings. Suzana believes that all Canadians have a civic duty to honour the First Peoples of Canada and to be inclusive. She is committed to raising awareness of Aboriginal issues as well as creating more opportunities for Aboriginal people. And more relevantly, she is in a loving committed relationship with a Blackfoot woman from Kainai First Nation. Two-spirit orientation (while a term coined in the 90s) has traditional roots for various tribes; and for some tribes was a role of honor. We all have a role and place in our communities.
Suzana’s friends and her partner would describe her as compassionate, silly, optimistic and humble. In collaborating with Suzana, I could see that she is more concerned for the welfare of others. Her words, “Humility is a lifestyle. We are no better and no worse than another. Love, explore and value both yourself and others. Know that if you are questioning / exploring your sexuality; that it is ok. Love is love. We are all students of life, be open to learning. Help and allies are out there if you want. Don’t get me wrong, I make mistakes too”. It is obvious that Suzana has a big heart and is accepting of people as they come, but this has not always been her experience in life. While it may be Suzana’s aim to create a safe environment for people to be who they truly are, she was not always confident in sharing the fact that she was bi-sexual. “I felt afraid and like the “other”. Queer sexuality was never talked about. I didn’t have any gay friends or know of any gay resources; so I stayed afraid and in the closet.” At different times in their lives, for various reasons (including sexuality, abuse, self-esteem, and loss), both Suzana and Nikkina have faced thoughts of suicide. Both ladies are now it a healthy place; but needed to access support, explore and own their identity first. Without realizing it, we put pressure on people in our lives to fulfill roles that we are comfortable with. We know it can be difficult to accept when someone begins to reveal a new side of themselves. It was not until Suzana left her home life that she felt comfortable enough to explore her sexuality. Being around people who openly talked about queer sexuality with respect helped her to feel confident as a bi-sexual woman. Still she was private about her relationships with women as she experienced what it was like to be judged negatively in public and to feel like an outsider. Since meeting her current partner, Nikkina Weaselhead, she has become a lot stronger and accepting of herself. “I always knew that NEW TRIBE JUNE 2012

COMMUNITY I was bi-sexual. But, I never accepted it or explored it until I met my current partner and soul-mate. We love eachother knowing both our light & our dark.” Realizing that she was going to pursue a committed relationship with a woman, Suzana decided to write a letter to her family and friends at home. While some were accepting of this news, others were less open to the idea that Suzana was not who she was for all those previous years they had known her. Some people thought it might be a phase or treated it as a joke. Nikkina decided that she also wanted Suzana to meet her family. This was going to be difficult for a Mormon First Nations family. Not only was it an issue that Nikkina was dating a woman, it was difficult for some to accept that she was dating a non-Aboriginal person. Together they faced their families, friends, and internal relationship issues. It was more important that they not play victim to people’s ignorance, but to continue to build each other’s confidence and own their sexuality; an intrinsic part of their identity. Over the past few years, it has become less difficult for Suzana to share this with people in both work and social settings. Since doing so, she has felt a lot less weight on her shoulders and believes that together we can make an easier for everyone when it comes to these matters. Suzana still has yet to come out to her father. Laughing, Suzana says that the last time she spoke to her ‘old fashioned’ father about committing to a relationship, she was telling him that she was dating to a Tattoo artist; to which he was not initially pleased, and now she is going to surprise him with the news of her relationship to a woman that she is very much in love with and committed to. Scrolling her Facebook newsfeed one day, Suzana came across an ad for the 2012 Miscellaneous Youth Network (MYN) Queer Prom. The MYN is a Calgarybased, not-for-profit organization that provides a safe space, education and resources for GBLQQTT youth and

community. Justine Bonczek, MYN Board Member and Queer Prom organizer, notes, “It’s our second time doing Queer Prom, last time was in 2010 and was the first time Calgary ever had a queer prom. It was a huge event and a massive success.” Suzana’s ambition to continue the momentum of safety for other twospirit persons prompted her entry into the pageant and she is now currently

I consider these women as friends, but also as role models. It takes courage to share personal experiences openly in hope of reaching others and educating people in sensitive matters. Hearing Suzana and Nikkina speak about their encounters as a couple has drawn attention to more similarities then differences of emotions that are felt when subjected to criticism for being who we are. Choosing whether to welcome diversity or denying it may have life changing consequences. Suzana is a responsible, hard-working and active member of the Calgary and Suzana Rymak and Nikkina Weasel Head Aboriginal community. Rye Rye Go! Pop! Bang! For a girl to rap takes a lot since as always there are double standards to bypass, especially since everyone will make comparisons to female rap stars such as Miss Nicki and others. But for Rye Rye to silently show up on the scene, and make herself known to the crowd without over hyping it, was definitely a smart thing to do. This is what you call classically cool, and for that Rye Rye you can count on one more fan. Though it wasn’t intended for her first album’s release date to be pushed back, she has been heard saying that she was rather relieved as she didn’t want to push her album if it wasn’t ready. Let’s just give her the benefit of the doubt, and thank her for not being a Macy Gray. With Baltimore bass influence, a shrill cute voice, and the ability to make rap sound sassy, this mix tape rap star was only a LG (Little Girl) when she popped on the mic. With props from M.I.A you can figure out the type of flavor that will come with this. There are also appearances made from Akon, Neptune’s, and Robyn which make for an interesting time, as we see Rye Rye sample various electro beats that create a style all her own. It has been a while since M.I.A has made the scene, so for her to show up and give some props to another female bubble gum rap star, without trying to compete with her on the song she is Featured on titled Sunshine, makes it even better. Only because this is a pure example of no matter how cool you are, if you’re going to be a jealous hater what is the point? Collaborations are the best thing since whip cream. Definitely check out the song Sunshine, Better than you and Shake Twist Drop Feat. Tyga if
this is something you’re interested in.
Kelly Hogan I like to keep myself in pain It was a huge disappointment when it was realized that this girl is in no relation to Hulk Hogan, this was basically the only reason why there was even interest in this particular solo album, anyways; turns out there was some other credit to give this album a second listen too. When asked what kind of music she makes, she states she makes music to make out too, don’t hear the kind of music much, but if you’re ready for a quite Sunday alone with the one you love, try and at least set the mood. With a great backing band that involves Booker T. Jones,(no not the wrestler, but there is a weird coincidence that this has nothing to do with wrestling) and James Gadson there are definitely some great moments on the song We can have nice things. A soulful folk atmosphere but at times it almost feels to mature, like maybe your older aunt who still wants to remain cool, and listens to Lucinda Williams would have this cd on rotate in her disc man. Overall for someone who has worked with Niko Case, and Jacob Dylan, you know there is some definite merit to the whole experience it just takes a few times to really understand it. With a song like Daddy’s little girl, you can expect that this album is definitely going to be understated in the fact that most will over look the talent that came together to make this happen. But for now this will have to wait on the shelf until one day you find yourself forty years old, lonely, and coming to the realization that the music on the radio is not always the end all be all.

Music You Can Feel In Your Toes The Hives Lex Hives Five long years and produced on their own label Disque Hives you would assume that this would have been made a lot sooner, but alas like all good things, it doesn’t come easy. With that the new single Go right ahead, is in true Hives fashion intriguing. Recorded in Sweden, the lead singer does not fail to come off as rooster swagger Mick Jagger style is still in check. Matching suites check, fast fuzzy riffs check. All in check and accounted for this is going to be another great experience. Especially since on their Facebook page they held a contest that awarded a fan who could unscramble the entire album track listing, the winner receiving a phone call from the Hives. Another great factor affecting the overall sound of the boys and Howlin’ Pelle Almquvist is that this album doesn’t have that coke machine glow like the Black and White album working with a big label like Interpol , and having the advantage of getting some polished albums, this is a little grittier and low-tech. Which suits the “rock n roll snarl” all you hardcore fans are aware of. With twelve tracks, and two bonus tracks, this is one of those rare times that you should buy the album as there are some interesting keepsakes that come along with the cd.
Linkin Park Living Things All good things come in June, and for that this month is definitely one for highly anticipated albums to be dropped with that, Linkin Park gives us their fifth album. Recorded in the same room as their two other albums this album is quite a good take on pieces of the past and new tidbits of LP trying to make a new sound. You have to appreciate an attempt at making your sound remain constant but not so far off that you disappoint your hardcore fans that are used to sounds of the tried and true. With Burn it down keeping the recipe makes the mix easy to swallow. Not to take away from album it actually works, Mike Shinoda, and Chester Bennington definitely have a connection that helps them create without making a scene. This must be the secret that LP has up their sleeve to ensure that no matter what type of mood they are in, they will definitely be able to keep that vibe alive. This is reassuring as sometimes you just need a great freaking rock band to freak out too, let’s hope they make some tour stops in our neck of the woods. Because if a good rock band doesn’t come around soon, there is definitely going to be a rise in questionable activity, as there needs to be some release, no one can live solely on bubble gum pop rock, and hip hop. With Victimized being most noticeably the heaviest track on the album it would be interesting to sit with a new fan and watch the reaction. One of the best tracks though is In my remains the way the light intro fades into this heavy realm is so entertaining. NEW TRIBE JUNE 2012

See You at the Movies Starring Kristen Stewart, Hemsworth and Charlize Theron

In this new version of the fairy-tale, the second in just a few months, Snow White is like a cross between Lord of the Rings and Joan of Arc. It’s very different from the campiness of Julia Roberts’ Mirror Mirror, but with a similar basic theme. The action scenes are great as well as the British lush scenery is breathtaking. As in Peter Jackson’s Tolkien trilogy, many of the locations are developed rather than computer-generated, which gives them an emotion of legitimacy as well as solidity. Set Designer Dominic Watson somehow managed to create many of this dream world at Pinewood Studios, for which he deserves large credit for the successful look of this film. Oscar-winning costume decorator Colleen Attwood does a sensational job: a few of the severe queen’s outfits are among her finest creations. The scene stealer of the show is undoubtedly Charlize Theron as the wicked queen obsessed with preserving her looks and her own, highly individual take on women’s rights. Kristen Stewart holds her own against a wide ensemble cast and shows why she is one of the rising stars of her generation. Overall a visually pleasing movie that will delight a wide variety of movie goers. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Starring Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin The random plot twists and unfunny jokes in Men in Black 3 are so overbearing, you’ll come away with a deep loss of the time you wasted watching it in the theatre, much less the money spent to do so. This is a film so empty, it leaves you eagerly anticipating the boring ending. The ingenious concept of the 1st Men in Black motion picture was the way it blended two genres: the zany space movies and the buddycop humorousness. By the time Men in Black 2 appeared, the blend of both seemed just as tired as either of them by itself. So not sure who thought it was a good idea to do it again. Men in Black 3 tries to jumps tart those two tired genres by adding a third often-predictable genre: the time-travel comedy. Unfortunately, this theme has also been done to death and not even some vaguely amusing special effects can save this turkey. That said, there are a few good bits in Men in Black 3. And Josh Brolin is pretty much excellent as the younger version of Tommy Lee Jones’ character, Agent K. A few of the big special effects set pieces are fun to watch, here and there. For the most part though, do yourself a favor and save it for a rental if you must complete the series. 2 out of 5 stars

Book Reviews For the restless mind The Ghost of Spirit Bear writtney by Ben Mikaelsen The Ghost of Spirit Bear writtney by Ben Mikaelsen is about bullying and teachers and counselors may view this book a bit different than students. One audience may look at this book to be very inspiring, and instructive, while another audience may view it as not likely to be true or even as entertainment. Cole Mathews happens to be the bully in this book and the victim is known as Peter Driscal, whom he had beat once before. They both end up returning to their high school after they have spent time on an Alaskan island seeking therapuetic time. They also got a chance to take a look at their inner lives.
Abduction
Cole Matthews gained a lot of personal insight but his old violent ways are starting to come back once he finds out that his best friend Peter becomes the mark of gang attacks. Cole is seeking ways in which he can change the behavior within his old high school. He needs to talk things over with his principal though using some of similar methods that he was once taught before. She lets him come up with his own plan as the methods begin to fall way too easily.
Monkeyface Chronicles by Richard Scarsbrook Monkeyface Chronicles by Richard Scarsbrook is one of the best books yet. This book is about a boy named Philip Skyler who was actually born with a facial deformity. Earlier in his life, he had already been taught that his face was going to get him into trouble. There was nothing much that Philip could even do about it either. He soon ended up becoming the center of attention. His condition was known as Van der Woude syndrome. All of his class mates and the people who bullied him, gave him the nickname “monkey face.� This book shows how Philip sought revenge for all of the people that made fun of him. His grandfather once taught him all about cause and effect in life, and that is the tactic he is going to use to payback everyone who has ever made fun of him about his face. He was put through a journey which led him to some very abnormal circumstances within his own family. Nobody in his family were who they seemed to be anymore. His father was always isolating himself from everyone, and his grandfather was to into other things. This book is really inspirational to all readers.

Book Reviews For the restless mind Egghead by Caroline Pignat Egghead by Caroline Pignat tells everything from a very realistic perspective. They’re told by Will, whom is the main character, as well as Katie, his only friend, and Devan. Will is infatuated with ants and is the school’s main target for bullying. The entire book deals with many different ways of provoking Will. They did everything from messing up his ant farm to locking him out of the locker room naked. Katie wants to really protect Will because she is his only friend. Devan is too worried about his crush on Katie and trying to get away from the main bully which is Shane. Even though Katie wants to help and protect her friend Will, she still wants to remain friends with her other classmates. Will ends up in a coma, after one of the pranks pulled got out of control. Even though the book ends on a very good note, people still need to get a message out of this book. Shane acted the way he did as a bully because he was abused by his father. Some teens that read this book can end up relating in some type of way and getting all of the character’s viewpoints. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay De Asher Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay De Asher is based on the main character who goes by the name of Clay Jenson. He’s amazed to hear the voice of Hannah Baker, who’s a dead classmate of his when playing a cassette tape that he received in some type of odd package. The actual tape explains in detail the events that led to her killing herself. Clay spends his day analyzing the tape and visiting all of the places that Hannah wanted him to go to. The tape explains what’s being said by Hannah in italics, and Clay’s thoughts while listening to it. He’s reminded of all of the betrayals and secrets that show the entailment of the smallest actions. Hannah is not at all noble from feeling guilt. She had something to do with an accidental car accident and rape that resulted in death. Readers will definitely get a good message out of this book when they’re reading it. The main message presented here is that how people treat one another, although it can be hard to bare, will inspire all readers. At the end of the day, nobody wants to live feeling guilty about something they have done to someone. NEW TRIBE JUNE 2012

Summertime is here! With the return of leaves on the trees, bumble bees, and the promise of sunshine we can now break out our summer whites, sandals, and fabulous hats. Recently I stumbled across a most fashionable Native, and had the pleasure of photographing her. Her warm smile had me at hello, and I raced to get my camera ready. It took but a moment to recognize and marvel at the eclectic and refined style of Deanna LaPlante. From the bright straw Fedora to her gilded toenail polish, her ensemble is pulled together to produce perfection. White jean Capri pants paired with a black studded tee, and a jean vest, create a chic casual look that could go from day to night with some lipstick and heels. To top off her day look she accessorizes with two gold arrow necklaces, oversized black aviators, gold arm cuff, gladiator sandals, and a neutral cross-body bucket bag. No look is complete without a choice hairstyle. Taking the trend into her own hands, she compliments her beautiful long hair, with an unexpected shaved side and subtle highlight. It works so well that one would think she was born that way. Deanna’s effortless personal style lets the world know that it is indeed summertime!
