Aboriginal Happenings From Across Canada Government invests in First Nations housing

in Fredericton. SOURCE - TIMES & TRANSCRIPT

Wake held for Aboriginal leader

FREDERICTON - ItÕ s a simple threebedroom house built in the style of many of the newer homes on the St. MaryÕ s First Nation. But to Bernadette Derrico, itÕ s a castle. She never thought sheÕ d have a new home.

CALGARY Ð For 10 days every summer, Raymond Crowchief presided over his familyÕ s teepee on the Stampede grounds.

Ò No, no. I get choked up, itÕ s a dream come true,Ó the 56-year-old said yesterday.

This year, the patch of ground at the Indian Village will remain empty.

Ò This is everything,Ó Derrico said, noting sheÕ s never had a new house before.

Crowchief, 65, and his wife, Angeline Leather, respected spiritual and community leaders on the Siksika First Nation east of Calgary, died following a 10-vehicle collision near Strathmore during a winter storm on Jan. 8.

DerrichoÕ s new home is one of 10 onreserve units that have been built on first nations around the province over the past year thanks to federal investments to improve housing. ItÕ s a big change from her last house, which was nearly 70 years old, leaking and so plagued by mould that inspectors said no one should be living in the basement. Ò It needed to be replaced, believe me,Ó said Derrico, whose new house sits on the same spot at the corner of Deadham and Paul streets on the St. MaryÕ s First Nation

They were on their way home from Strathmore on the Trans-Canada Highway, their three grandchildren in the back seat, when their vehicle was T-boned, family members said. Leather, 68, passed away en route to the hospital. Crowchief died at the Foothills Medical Centre on Jan. 18, the same day Leather was buried.

A wake is planned on the reserve, to honour Crowchief, said his niece, Lillian Crowchief. Ò He was very humble, kind, generous, deeply spiritual, a strong advocate for our Siksika language and culture,Ó she said. Ò A strong believer in our native way and our spiritual beliefs. A leader amongst the Crowchief family.Ó Crowchief grew up in the part of the Siksika reserve known as Ò Little Washington.Ó The fluent Blackfoot speaker was steeped in the culture of his First Nations tribe, his niece said. Raymond started dancing at a young age. As a fancy dancer, he travelled throughout Canada, the United States and Europe to perform. He was also a founding member of the Blackfoot A-1 Club Drummers. During his travels, Crowchief was a proud ambassador for the Siksika people, said Lillian Crowchief. At home, he was a community leader, serving as a board member for the board of education and native liaison to the Calgary Police Service. SOURCE - CALGARY HERALD

TIPS TO PAY OFF THOSE HOLIDAY BILLS The Christmas season has come and gone, and now youÕ re left with a few bills to pay for. If youÕ re like many people out there you may have paid for some of your presents with credit cards, or with money you just really didnÕ t have, maybe even borrowing from parents. Now it’s time to figure out a way to pay off these bills. There are lots of ways you can earn a little extra cash to pay for your Christmas presents. If you hold a steady full or part time job you can and should create a budget list. Make a list of all the expenses and bills you have to pay for. Put an amount in the category of Ò Christmas BillsÓ . This amount will depend on how much you have spent total on your presents and the amount of time you plan on taking to pay off these bills. I usually recommend trying to pay off these bills in total in about three months or less. If you take longer than that it becomes a real headache, and you can potentially fall behind. Obviously the amount of all your expenses, including paying off your Christmas

10

NEW TRIBE FEBRUARY 2011

presents should be less than what you receive in income on a monthly basis. There are also other things that people can do to make a little extra cash to pay for things like Christmas presents. Even if you do have a full or part time job, you can do these things so you donÕ t have to spend money out of your normal paycheck at all for your presents. Below are some different money making activities you can partake in, outside of an everyday job: Become a dog walker Being a dog walker is a great way to earn extra money. You normally get about $20 an hour, easily giving you an extra $100 or so a week, depending on the amount of dogs you walk and the time you take to do this activity. ItÕ s also good for your health, being that youÕ re pretty much just walking around outside exercising. Walking dogs can be a rather enjoyable thing to do to make money.

Babysitting Babysitting other peopleÕ s kids is another good way to make some spare money, particularly for girls. Most people will pay you either an hourly wage or a set amount just to watch their little ones for a period of time. A lot of the time you are averaging about $15 to $20 an hour just to spend some time in someone elseÕ s house with their kids. If you are babysitting at night a lot of the time the kids are sleeping, so youÕ re getting paid to watch TV! Babysitting is another great way to get some extra money and pay off your bills. Borrow the Money I know this sounds counterproductive but the interest you are paying on the gifts you purchased on credit could be detrimental in paying off the principle amount. Research online for consoldation loans and see which one offers the best terms for you. Remember to keep the term limit short and keep the focus on paying off those holiday bills, not getting into more debt.

FLAVOR

On the Table Turkey Casserole Ingredients 2 heads fresh broccoli, chopped 1 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms juice of 1/2 lemon pinch of salt 2 (10 3/4 ounce) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup 1 1/2 cups Hellmans(R) (yes, it matters!) Mayonnaise 2 tablespoons curry powder 1/2 cup white wine 3 tablespoons minced garlic 1/2 tablespoon black pepper 1 onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup chopped parsley 4 cups cooked shredded or diced turkey (I find dark meat works best) 1 1/2 cups Italian breadcrumbs 1/2 cup butter, THINLY sliced Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a mixing bowl, drizzle broccoli and mushrooms with the lemon juice and a pinch of salt, and layer the broccoli only (reserve mushrooms) in the bottom of a 9x13-inch casserole dish. In a large bowl, mix together the soup, mayonnaise, curry powder, wine, minced garlic, pepper, and chopped onion. Mix together until curry is well blended. Sprinkle in the parsley, and then lightly spread a coating of about half of the soup mixture over the broccoli. Evenly spread the turkey over the broccoli, then add the mushrooms and some extra parsley, if you desire. Cover this entirely with the remaining sauce, then sprinkle with the bread crumbs. Here is where you have an option depending on mood: usually I cover the bread crumbs with thinly sliced butter to create a kind of crust, but the white cheddar makes a great topping if mixed with them as well. Bake until topping is crisp, about 40 minutes, and serve hot from the casserole dish

Lily’s Wish Saddling up a dream come true by Chantal Macleod Imagine the difference a wish can make. At the ChildrenÕ s Wish Foundation they not only imagine it, they see the profound impact wishes have for children and their families every day. Since its inception 27 years ago, the Foundation has granted nearly 17,000 wishes to children across Canada. The Alberta & NWT Chapter has granted nearly 1500 wishes and will grant 125 wishes this year alone.

of Ghostdancer. The horses on the reserve were never branded and often came and went so it was no surprise when one day Lily and family awoke to see that Ghostdancer had moved on. Despite his absence, Ghostdancer held special memories for both Lily and her grandmother Muriel whom she lives with. It was these memories that would inspire LilyÕ s wish.

Approximately every three days a child in the Alberta & NWT Chapter will see their biggest dream come true. The children served by the Foundation all have something in common; theyÕ ve been diagnosed with a high risk, life threatening illness. A wide spectrum of diagnoses meet the FoundationÕ s eligibility criteria, ranging from cancers, blood disorders, genetic syndromes and organ dysfunction. Once a child is deemed eligible, they are asked a simple but important question; in the wide realm of possibilities, what would bring them the greatest joy? Whatever the wish, The ChildrenÕ s Wish Foundation is committed to ensuring that each and every child realizes their dream. The Foundation has never denied an eligible child their wish, despite having had to deliver some of the most unique wishes imaginable. This is the story of Lily and her wish for a life long friend. Lily has always loved horses. As a young girl on the Tsuu TÕ ina Nation reserve, Lily often saw wild horses roaming the hills and was particularly enthralled with a horse by the name

14

NEW TRIBE FEBRUARY 2011

The events leading up to LilyÕ s wish offer far less pleasant memories, memories of long hospital stays and aggressive treatments. In 2007, life for Lily and her family was forever changed. In addition to having Down Syndrome diagnosed at birth, she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a cancer of the white blood cells. LilyÕ s speech is somewhat slurred due to her condition but

while in treatment at the hospital, all LilyÕ s grandmother and family would here her say was Ò go homeÓ . Now home and healthy, she recently had a check up and continues to be remission, Lily utters those same words about her horse, Izzy; Ò want Izzy home.Ó For LilyÕ s wish, the ChildrenÕ s Wish Foundation presented her with a palomino quarter horse of her very own. Izzy was purchased from a local ranch and continues to be boarded there until construction of a securely fenced area is complete near their home. IzzyÕ s home on the reserve is expected to be completed this spring at which point Lily will be able to see her friend from the kitchen window. Until then, her grandmother Muriel takes her to visit Izzy as often as possible so Lily can groom her and take riding lessons which were also included as part of her wish. Lily is just one of the thousands of children whose lives have been touched by the magic of a wish. Since 1984, the Foundation has built its reputation and identity on the unparalleled dedication of its staff, volunteers and donors who share a heartfelt passion to lift the spirits of children with life threatening illnesses by making their wishes come true. MY ANGEL

LOVE

There are times in our life when we feel that we don’t need a partner or we’ve given up hope in finding that special someone. Then out of now where or in the oddest place it seems we meet the most intriguing person we’ve ever met in our lives. It is for this reason that we must establish ties with people. It is the relationships that grow from these ties that make our life meaningful. I had given up hope at one point in my life that I would ever meet that special someone but then I met an angel. In the strangest place too, a place I never expected to meet anyone; the penitentiary. This angel of mine wrote me letters while I was incarcerated. He made me laugh and made me feel good about myself when I had no one else to turn to. He was incarcerated at another institution and I guess you can say I provided him with the same thing. In the beginning we wrote back and forth. I was playing hard to get but in reality I was falling for this angel. Until one letter he hurt my pride, little did I know that it was unintentional. I wrote him back and told him “that maybe it was best that we just be friends and nothing more.” I didn’t know it at the time but this angel was falling for me also and that letter I sent him tore him up inside, for it was coming close to the time that our incarceration was coming to an end and we were to meet. After I got released I played with the question “should I or shouldn’t I call him?” I had his number sitting on my kitchen table for a few weeks. Then one day I decided to read the last letter he sent me. I began to remember how he made me feel while I was alone and had no one else. That’s all I needed, I picked up the phone and gave him a call. I wanted to see if this angel was for real and if everything he told me in the letters was true. That was the beginning of our phone conversations. The first sound of his voice sent shivers up my spine. I couldn’t help but grin as I always did when I received his letters. We talked to each other on the phone for a few months; all the while I was falling deeper and deeper in love. We planned on meeting each other in person but at the time things weren’t going as planned. Then one day, he calls to tell me he’s coming to town. I made plans for him and I to meet at my brothers. As I waited for him my stomach kept doing flip flops due to all the anxiety and nervousness. When he finally called to let me know that he was a couple blocks away I got scared but at the same time I just wanted to hold him, I couldn’t wait any longer. That was the first time I laid my eyes on him physically, before that I had only seen him in pictures. I couldn’t help but smile, as I always did when I thought of him. But this was different, I was looking right at him and he was looking right at me. It was then that I realized I couldn’t live my life without this beautiful angel of mine. He was and still is everything I ever wanted in a partner. I think back to when I was incarcerated and all the times I was alone, I always felt like screaming inside and what calmed me down was his letters. I prayed everyday that I’d meet someone like him. Now that we’ve been together (physically) for 2 years, when something is not right with me he senses it and vice versa. Our bond is unbreakable and I thank Creator every day for crossing our paths in the unique way that he did. Yes we have our struggles like every relationship does and there are times we feel like throwing in the towel but we made a promise to each other, that we would never leave each other alone as we were before we met. We have completed each other’s life. I pray that I can hold on to him until the day I die. Throughout life we all come across that special someone who catches our attention in a way that makes all our worries disappear. When things go wrong they make it all right. Someone who brings significance and purpose to our life, this is the type of person you know you want to spend the rest of your life with. When you’re together your world is right. When you’re apart nothing seems the same. It is these types of ties that make life meaningful, for without them we are lost. To my angel; you are the one I prayed for; you are the one I longed for. I’m grateful everyday that you are in my life. I live my life for you and the kids, without you I’d be lost. I will forever be in your debt because you saved me, for that I thank you. I will always love you, this I promise you with all my heart. NEW TRIBE FEBRUARY 2011

TABLE #4

The walkways between tables in the crowded pizzeria were narrow. Rose was just beginning to get the hang of dodging the busboys and wandering customers without losing everything on her tray. She had wondered, the first two weeks on the job, why Mr. Blakely would keep such a clumsy mess on; especially considering that the other waitresses were not only perfectly balanced, but perfectly put together from their high ponytails to their folded white socks. Mr. Blakely laughed when Rose voiced her wonderment to him. He put his hand on her shoulder and said, Ò You have not gotten one order wrong since you started.Ó He shrugged and chuckled, Ò No complaints with you.Ó Rose applied for a job at BlakelyÕ s Pizza after her parentÕ s requests for her to “find some social interaction” became too frequent to ignore. She hadnÕ t known she would be serving along side Blazer High School royalty. She wondered if being treated like the Invisible Woman

16

NEW TRIBE FEBRUARY 2011

counted as social interaction, or if her parents would catch wise and try forcing her into band camp or the academic Olympics.

Her family had been in town six months, but Rose was still the new girl. She felt she would be the new girl until there was some newer girl she could pass the title onto. Her old school had an observatory, Blazer didnÕ t even offer an astronomy class. She smiled, approaching her table, Ò Okay, I have 2 lemonades, a chocolate milk, a Coke, and a diet?Ó The father of the family of 5 nodded his approval. Rose placed the glasses on the table as quickly as she could manage without sloshing their contents all over her customers. She kept smiling as she blew a rouge strand of hair out of her face, and said, Ò Your pizza should be out in just a minute.Ó She turned quickly, startling herself by running her face directly into DerickÕ s collarbone. Derrick was Mr. BlakelyÕ s son. Mr. Blakely offered Derick any position

in the restaurant, and Derick chose busboy. Mr. Blakely allowed Derick to choose his own schedule, and Derick worked any time the restaurant was open. He was tall and had light gray eyes. His hair was a little curly and a little long. He was not-so-subtly-sought-after by every cheerleader with a high ponytail and white socks, but he was working today, maybe without even an inclination that it was ValentineÕ s Day. Ò Oh! Sorry,Ó said Rose, rubbing her nose. Ò Ow, hey, IÕ m not bleeding, right?Ó she dropped her hand and tilted her face up. Derick laughed, “No, you’re fine. I, on the other hand may need an x-ray.Ó He rolled his shoulders and rubbed the place of impact. Rose made a sound meaning Ò yeah rightÓ out of the corner of her mouth and started past him. Derick twisted in place, pulling something out his apron and reaching out to wiggle it in front of her face. Ò You left your tip,Ó he said, Ò table 4.Ó

FICTION Rose took the folded five dollar bill. She turned back around to thank him, he he was already wrangling his busboy cart down to the next table. He called over his shoulder and waggled his finger at her, “You know IÕ m the only one who wouldnÕ t have pocketed that, be more careful!Ó Ò Thanks, Derick!Ó Rose shouted over the din of the restaurant. She was always flustered around him, and she was proud she had been able to make a joke instead of fainting of embarrassment. That was progress. When she got home she fell straight back on her bed, looking at the constellations of glow-in-the-dark stars she had meticulously glued on the ceiling before she had unpacked a single box. The weight of the tips she had crammed into her pocket was uncomfortable. She reached in and raked all the currency out onto the bed. Rose sat up, hopeful, to count it, but saw at once that it was all coins. All small coins at that, not even quarters tonight. The only bill was the folded 5 dollars Derick had saved for her. She picked it up and sighed as she lay back down. She held the money up to the light and unfolded it. Something fell. It was a small piece of paper, folded in half; a tiny card. The front was illustrated with a pencil drawing of a rose. The inside read, Ò Be my valentine?Ó RoseÕ s mind began racing. Where had this tip come from? What did Derick say? Table four? Table four! Who was sitting at

table four? She stopped herself. It didnÕ t have her name on it. It didnÕ t say, Ò To Rose, the waitress at table four,Ó it said, Ò Be my valentine?Ó A drawing of a rose on ValentineÕ s day was really pretty generic, she thought, it didnÕ t have to mean her. But someone had carefully placed inside the five dollar bill! The five dollar bill was meant for her to see, right? Rose closed her eyes and worked to remember every person she served at table four. It came to her like a flash of light, she knew who it was! She threw her coat on as she took the stairs down two at a time, making a bee-line for BlakelyÕ s Pizza. When she got there, Derick was sweeping the front sidewalk. Rose slowed her pace, walking steadily towards him. He looked up to see her coming and leaned on his broom when she gave him a little wave. Ò Hi,Ó she said. He smiled, Ò Hi.Ó Rose looked at her feet, then up over his left shoulder, then at his face. She looked in his eyes and said, Ò No guys sat at table four today. Well, there was this old guy, but he was with his wife, and they have probably been married forever, so, it wasnÕ t him.Ó Derick smiled wider and asked, Ò What wasnÕ t him?Ó Ò The note,Ó valentine.Ó

Ò Hmmm,Ó he said as he pushed the last little bit of dirt off the sidewalk. Rose doubted herself. Her stomach sunk a little as he moved further away. Ò Come in,Ó Derick said, opening the door to the pizzeria, Ò you forgot something today.Ó Bewildered that the conversation had so quickly turned to business, Rose walked through the door. She stopped. The restaurant was quiet! There were no customers, but there was a place setting ready at one table. Table four was lit with candles and a small vase of fragrant red roses sat delicately in the middle. Ò I donÕ t know if you knew this,Ó Derick said, helping Rose out of her coat, Ò but I know the guy who runs this place. I kinda have connections.Ó He took both of her hands in his and told her, Ò and you forgot to answer my question.Ó Rose blinked, the shock of the empty restaurant muting her speech. Derick leaned near to her ear and asked softly, Ò Be my valentine?Ó Ò Yes!Ó she answered more loudly than she had planned. She gained some composure and added, Ò Thank you.Ó Rose sat down at table four with Derick, smiling, and feeling not at all like the new girl.

she paused, Ò the

R An upcoming television show, Blackstone, will focus on Aboriginal life. Blackstone will premiere on January 28 on Showcase at 11 p.m. EST and January 25 on Aboriginal Televisions Network at 9 p.m. EST. The show will consist of nine onehour episodes. A dim view of the decline of CanadaÕ s First Nations will be presented by well-known First Nations actor Gordon Tootoosis. Gordon will portray tribal elder Cecil Delaronde. Delaronde says at one point in the show “White people have their mafia; we have Chief and CouncilÓ . Blackstone tells the story of a community suffering disintegration by its own hand as a result of mismanagement and corruption; however, a new generation of leaders rise up and fight to create lasting and significant change! Intense, stimulating, and confrontational, Blackstone is an exploration of the First NationsÕ power and politics. The story is not only relevant to the world of Aboriginals, but also to the world of power and politics in general. The story is inflexible, sturdy, and told from an Aboriginal point of view. It is different from compassionate stories about First NationsÕ people being victimized by outside forces. While the story may seem dismal, dark and real, it will also be about hope for a brighter future. Other cast members include Carmen Moore, Eric Schweig, Michelle Thrush, Nathaniel Arcand, Roseanne Supemault, Steven Cree Molison, Andrea Menard, Ray Thunderchild, Justin Rain, and Ashley Callingbull. The series is produced by EdmontonÕ s Prairie Dog Film + Television and with the association of the Aboriginal People Network, Showcase and Shaw Media, with the assistance of the Government of Alberta, and the Alberta Media Fund. The Canadian Media Fund also participated, along with the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit and

Rogers Cable Network Fund. Carmen Moore plays a promoting new band chief in Blackstone. Moore stated Ò I think we are going to ruffle a lot of feathers but at the same time I think there is going to be a lot of relief out there that someone is finally saying something”. Culture doesnÕ t have to be all about the old days and the good things that make people who and what they are. It can also be about family violence, alcoholism, incest, drug abuse, suicide, and other bad things that happen in todayÕ s world. While Blackstone focuses on the distributive classifications of the country’s Aboriginal people, the stories behind these upsetting portraits will help Canadians understand why such problems exist. This series will represent the need for Aboriginal people to push forward on their own and take responsibility for themselves. Blackstone will emphasize that there is hope for any situation. The series will carry a central message of a positive future for these great people of the First Nations. Blackstone will promote hope and reconciliation that the Aboriginal people and all people want in todayÕ s world. While Blackstone may be controversial, the series will promote hope and understanding. Understanding the culture and the history of these people is important and interesting. First Nations is a term for ethnicity that refers to Aboriginal people in Canada. The term First Nations has come into general use for the indigenous peoples of the Americas located in Canada and peoples of European-First Nations ancestry. Some of these members of various nations refer to themselves as tribal or national. North American indigenous peoples have cultures spanning thousands of years. Some records began with the arrival of European

IE

explorers and colonists going back to the late fifteenth century. Trappers, traders, explorers, and missionaries provide important evidence of early contact culture. Euro-CanadianÕ s early interactions with First Nations people were mostly peaceful, but had some conflict and even slavery. Compared to often violent battles between colonists and native people in the United States, the conflict is rather mild. The characteristics of Canadian Aboriginal civilizations included agricultural, permanent settlements, architecture, and trading networks. In 2006, the census reported 1, 172,790 Aboriginal people in Canada, which was 3.8% of the national population. National Aboriginal Day recognizes the cultural and contributions of the Aboriginals to the history of Canada. Aboriginal people are both creative and resourceful. These people have created a cultivated means of survival, adapting their mode of thinking to AustraliaÕ s often relentless environment. The sophistication of Aboriginal people does not come in material things, but the development of complex social systems and highly evolved spiritual relationships to the land. September 1, 2010 was the 11th year anniversary of the launch of the first national Aboriginal Television Network in the world with programming by, for and about Aboriginal Peoples to share with all Canadians and viewers around the world. Aboriginal Television Network is available in approximately 10 million Canadian homes with cable, satellite, telco-delivered, and wireless television service providers. Blackstone will be a series you will not want to miss, especially if you love a story of people rising to greatness from a dismal, bleak situation!

The practice of yoga is designed to unite mind, body, and spirit, and is based on the statement that the mind and body are one, and that by the correct practice of yoga it is possible for the body to reach a place of harmony and heal itself. Developed in India, yoga is a spiritual practice that has been evolving for the last 5,000 years or so. The original yogis were reacting, in part, to IndiaÕ s ancient Vedic religion, which emphasized rituals. The yogis wanted a direct spiritual experience -- one on one -not symbolic ritual. So they developed yoga. Yoga means Ò unionÓ in Sanskrit, the classical language of India. According to the yogis, true happiness, liberation and enlightenment comes from union with the divine consciousness known as Ô BrahmanÕ , the transcendent Self. The various yoga practices are a methodology for reaching that goal. Yoga has increased in popularity in recent years, with over an estimated 6 million people in North America currently engaging in regular yoga workouts. Part of yogaÕ s popularity is simply that it provides so many health benefits. Yoga assists a person in becoming more aware of their body: their posture, their alignment, and the way they move. Yoga helps people become more relaxed and centered, less prone to stress, more energetic, happier, healthier, and more peaceful. Why do yoga? The short answer is that yoga makes you feel better. Practicing the postures, breathing exercises and meditation makes you healthier in body, mind and spirit. Yoga lets you tune in, chill out, and shape up all at the same time. To start a typical yoga class, breathing and mild stretching exercises are performed to prepare the participants mentally as well as physically. Most yoga classes consist of performing the asanas (yoga poses) either individually or linked in flows (known as vinyasana). At the end of each yoga class there is a short period of meditation or

relaxation in shavasana (the corpse pose). There are several forms of yoga which can be practiced so you can generally pick one that suites you best. Generally different forms of yoga produce different benefits. For example, Iyengar yoga is for correct bodily alignment, and often utilizes props (including blocks, straps, or cushions). Bikram yoga is also known as hot yoga, as itÕ s performed in a heated room. It generally consists of a set of 26 poses done in a particular order. These are both forms of Hatha yoga and are commonly practiced in North America, as they focus on the use of strengthening and breathing exercises.

Yoga is extremely beneficial in the promotion of excellent flexibility, and is also excellent for circulation and development of muscle strength. However, its benefits extend beyond the physical, by promoting relaxation and calm. One of the basic things held to be true of yoga is that it helps to balance all areas of a personÕ s life by improving physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. For starters, yoga is good for what ails you. Specifically, research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases. Over the years, substantial research as been done on the health benefits of yoga through the yoga poses and Pranayama (yoga breathing). Yoga has been shown to produce three sorts of effects on the body: physiological, psychological, and biochemical. Yoga gives us control of ourselves. It calms the frenzy, clears the clutter and allows us to get back in touch with who we are. I AM SAVAGE ROSE

Article by Angel J. Sanderson Photography by John Medeiros Makeup by Kayla Martin

Melanie Parsons is recognized as a prominent community figure, a positive role model, and a dedicated advocate for living life to the fullest. Always one to be on top of the latest trends and fashions, she has once again reinvented herself into a most fitting role as designer of Ô Savage RoseÕ . With hundreds of unique earrings sold, Savage Rose is becoming a household brand spanning from Calgary to New York City, and reaching as far as Puerto Rico. At first glance you’re walking into a friendÕ s basement, but once fully engaged in the scenario it takes but a moment to realize that this is indeed Savage Rose Headquarters. Reggae tunes are bumpÕ n, beads, hooks, pliers wait for their next shift, and a table with hundreds of vibrant feathers strew across ready to be made into fabulous creations; Melanie is getting her New Tribe cover shoot makeup trial. Careful hands are plucking and placing, and painting each feather and gem into place, as the visionary and designer of Savage Rose vigilantly prepares to step into her new role as artist & designer. The picture comes to life. Remnants of collections past peek from behind the recent additions to the Savage Rose workshop. The beginning of the next collection sits in rows as a vibrant masterpiece lining the white canvas backboard. Melanie mentions this one is going to be one of her most diverse collection to date, and that there is a little something for everybody. Savage Rose has been branded with an urban chic vibe, as sort of organic bling club wear for

the most daring fashionista looking to try something new. Soon the conversation focuses on how dreams can become our reality and by setting small goals we achieve small victories. Savage Rose not only fits moulds as a fashion accessory, but can hold its own as a piece of visual art; a dream any designer can only hope to obtain. When buying jewelry everyone is informed that: Ò ...each piece is unique, and will not be replicated for anyone else.” This truly exemplifies that a purchase of Savage Rose jewelry isnÕ t just earrings, but a portrait of the buyer. The process of viewing photos, to complete the sale is exciting, as the fascination with this art piece continues to evoke appreciation. First; you hold the earrings and notice how even a well done photo cannot do justice to the impeccable craftsmanship, and fashion forward design. Then you proceed to try the earrings on for the first time. Instantly they bring life to even the most tired face, and seem to flawlessly blend in with anything they are paired with. The distinctive feather, chain, and bead work collaboration highlights beauty in each person, and creates a haven where anyone can find something that is special. Savage Rose is also the type of accessory that quickly becomes the focus of any outfit, making clothing secondary are the look is built around the jewelry. At first it was humble beginnings, as Melanie undertook her first pilot collection entitled Ô The Mr.T CollectionÕ , based on the 80Õ s characterÕ s signature single earring make with chains and feathers.

Testing the waters to see if anyone would be interested in this endeavour, Melanie borrowed some pliers from her bro-in-law, and set out to explore the shelves of local craft shops. From there the premier collection was born, and the rest is Savage Rose history. The original goal was to make and sell 100 pairs of earrings. Having well surpassed that goal, Melanie has continued to create collections of earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and chains each month that sell out within a half hour of being posted. When a collection is posted it creates frenzy, and everyone races to claim their Savage Rose piece. The most recent mini collection was served as a midnight sale that ended up being gobbled up within six minutes! The demand grows as MelanieÕ s hands work hard to produce original artwork. Ò Savage Rose is one of a kind, and is so diverse. I feel it was made for women from different backgrounds and doesnÕ t discriminate. Savage Rose is unique to me because it brings me out of my comfort zone and gives me a sense of confidence and I feel proud to be an Aboriginal woman. It brings me inspiration, as I am aware that the creator of Savage Rose went for her dreams, and overcame hardship.Ó Tenielle Ermineskin Ò The thing I love about Savage Rose is when you’re dressed in your finest; Savage Rose is the icing on the cake! You put it on & It makes your outfit 100 times more fly. I love the compliments I get; Savage Rose is unique, something different, never the same, and always fly! I’ll always rock my Savage Rose.... Long live Savage Rose! Ò Kodie BigPlume NEW TRIBE FEBRUARY 2011

COMMUNITY “Savage Rose, one of a kind designs; I can see are made from the heart. I have over 20 different pairs and counting. Her feathered and creative styles have me stylin’ and profiling every day of the month. I get many compliments when I wear her earrings; every collection that she has created is unique & different from the last. She is an inspiration to many. I love her passion for making woman feel beautiful. When I wear Savage Rose not only do I feel empowered as a woman, but I see others confidence in them as well.Ó Hailey George Ò IÕ ve never received as many compliments on jewelry as I do when I wear those earrings. No joke. People go bananas for them! I am doing the photo shoot for my album cover on Friday, and am using those as the earrings for the shoot.Ó Iskwe Since the first Savage Rose collection to the present moment, nearly hundreds of women from all over have been sporting her jewelry while proudly referring admirers on how they can scoop their very own piece. Savage Rose brings out confidence in the people who rock it. It has created its very own following that continues to grow. Melanie inspires through her ability to share her inner creativity and beauty with her peers, and community. Long live Savage Rose! Melanie, would you please share your thoughts on the idea of adding Ò artistÓ to your resume, as well as being recognized as such by your peers? IÕ ve always been creative but have not necessarily found a way to share it with my community. I think the development of Savage Rose has been a long time coming and until recently was just a small dream of mine. Being recognized by your

22

NEW TRIBE FEBRUARY 2011

community in such as way that is positive and perhaps motivating for others is great. The fact that I created something that I can use to continual motivate myself and others as well, and add to my resume is truly amazing. Although Savage Rose is still in its developmental stages, it is a brand that can be recognized by artists alike, as well by business professionals. Just before Christmas you broke your wrist! Yet you still came out with the collection on time. Amazing feat lady! Would you care to share a bit about that journey? When I think about it, breaking my wrist might have actually been a blessing in disguise. At first it was a bummer learning that not only would I face finishing a collection with one of my hands virtually immobilized, I would also be out of work as a server. This was no time to give up as bills needed to be paid, but most importantly I had to finish the collection for my expectant fans. Breaking my wrist forced me to be resourceful, and I was able to finish that particular collection because I asked for the help of a friend. Kirsten Ryder volunteered her time to help me finish the collection and we did it together. It reminded me of the importance of helping one another out, as well, how much can be accomplished if you learn to ask for help. Recently you received your degree in Public Relations. How has your education experience contributed to the success of Savage Rose? The continual success of Savage Rose is due to my appreciation for fashion and the knowledge I have acquired while obtaining a Bachelor of Applied Communications - Public Relations. I

am not a formally trained designer, so I trust in my eye for accessories and do my best to teach myself how to create different pieces. My education has also helped to get to where I am by helping me to feel more confident in what I am doing. It has definitely opened my eyes to how much work goes into developing a product that people want but also a brand that is easily recognized. I also learned that it is important to listen to your audience and try to deliver what they want and more. Any knowledge you would care to share with folks? Something you have become all the more wise understanding... Savage Rose is yet another teacher of the value of patience, having pride in what you do and goal setting. It is much easier to create a goal when you have something to measure your progress with. If you do not set goals for yourself, then it is difficult to know where you stand with yourself and others. I am happy that I can now say that I have surpassed all goals that I set almost 1 year ago this month. I am continually learning that things do not happen overnight and that it takes time to develop something that is of substance. ItÕ s not just about throwing some feathers together and adding a few chains and calling it Savage Rose. I have taken pride in what I do and do my best to carefully make each earring unique. I also let people know to care for their earrings as it is not only an accessory but a piece of art. I have pride in my jewelry and wish to create something that the owner loves and takes pride in wearing. I am so thankful for all the support I have received over the past year. Without the support of all the beautiful ladies rockinÕ Savage Rose, who knows where I would be today.

The Hardest Part is Letting Go

By: Cory Little Light Each and everyone of us at one time or another in our lives have experienced a bad break-up. None of us can deny it either. WeÕ ve all been through it, and itÕ s never an easy thing to go through. The pain at times can be almost unbearable, which is why we must always remain strong and fight through all of the heartache and pain. We need to realize and accept that break-ups are a part of life, and all of us will go through at least one. Maybe more. And if we really stop and think about it, out of all the relationships that we will endure here on planet earth there will always be a few that are going to be no good. Ones that youÕ re just going to have to let go of and just move on. And thatÕ s just the way it is. The important thing is we need to learn to know how to deal with a break-up when it happens. Because letÕ s face it, there are a whole lot of us out there who have no idea. Especially for those who have been in serious, long term relationships. The initial shock of a break-up can be too overwhelming to the point where we are left standing there scratching our heads saying, Ò is this really happening to me.Ó ItÕ s like we almost donÕ t want to believe what has just happened. We find ourselves in a state of denial,

24

NEW TRIBE FEBRUARY 2011

and all of this can be a very surreal feeling. And this my friends can be a very dangerous state of mind to be in because we then start to shut ourselves out from the rest of the world. We begin to isolate ourselves from everybody and become like walking zombies. Most of us will then turn to drinking excessively, using drugs, and even promiscuity to numb out and deal with the pain. This is all because we donÕ t want to deal with the reality of what has happened. The fact is though, when you wake up the next morning the pain is still there no matter how much youÕ ve tried to numb it out. Somehow we need to learn to deal with the break-up in a healthy way. The right way. And I think that the first real step is acceptance. You need to accept that the relationship is really over, and then you can start to begin the healing process. For some of us we may require professional counseling or treatment. And none of these things are anything to be ashamed of. Because you need to do whatever it takes to ensure that your healing needs are being met, and you canÕ t worry about what anybody else thinks. You also need to realize that the healing journey is a process and nothing ever happens over night. It may take months to heal a broken

heart, but always remain confident that in time it will heal. You will get through this!!! I think that most of the readers out there would strongly agree that the hardest part when it comes to a breakup is letting go of that person and trying to move on. And trust me, itÕ s always easier said than done. I mean really, how are you just supposed to turn your back on someone youÕ ve loved and been with for so long? But I think the real questions we need to be asking ourselves areÉ was the relationship any good anyway? Was the relationship a healthy relationship or an unhealthy relationship? Was the relationship abusive in anyway? Was the person that I was with unfaithful to me? I mean these are the questions that you really need to be asking yourself because if any of the above defines what your relationship was about then itÕ s probably best to make a change, take action and find somebody new because the chances of anything really changing for the better are very slim. And thatÕ s the truth. I mean in some rare cases a couple can overcome these types of things and go on to have a happy life together. But in most cases NO! Keep in mind that the roles can just as easily be reversed. ItÕ s not always the other person who is at fault. A lot of

COMMUNITY times itÕ s us who are the problem. I mean IÕ m going to be totally honest with all of you, IÕ ve been in some real unhealthy relationships, in fact I just recently got out of one, and the fact is that I was the problem. I was abusive emotionally, financially, and even at times things got physical. But this does not mean that I am a monster or a bad man, it just means that I need to get some help before I am ever truly ready to step into another relationship. I believe that life is a learning process and when it comes to all of my past relationships, I need to learn from my mistakes and all of my wrong doings. I believe in the power of change, and I believe that I can change. Anybody can change if they really want to. And sometimes you have to go through a few bad ones before you find the right one. Sometimes you’re going to have to go through a few bad break-ups in life, but always remember that itÕ s all a learning

process and by experiencing a breakup you are only going to grow as a person and become more wiser in the future when it comes to a relationship. My advice to all of you reading this out there is to be more aware in the future when it comes to choosing a partner. DonÕ t just rush into a relationship; make sure that you take it slow in the beginning so that you can find out what your new partner is truly really like. And most importantly, stay away from unhealthy relationships. This is really all common sense because if the person that you have begun dating is an alcoholic or a drug addict, or whatever, then that should tell you that maybe this person isnÕ t going to be any good for you, maybe this could affect your relationship in a negative way somewhere down the road. So you see really, itÕ s all about being aware and making smart choices when it comes to relationships, and seeing the trouble spots before they become a major issue further down

the road. Dealing with the loss of a girlfriend/ boyfriend can be emotionally and spiritually draining. Trust me, I know. When I was going through my breakup it was hard for me to even get out of bed and face the world some days. I had to be strong and find the strength and courage within myself so that I could move forward. And even though I struggled and had days where I just felt like giving up on life, I didnÕ t. I kept my head held high, swallowed my NATIVE pride and made the decision to walk forward and not look back. You see I realized that I canÕ t change my past, and I canÕ t dwell in it either. All I can do is try to become a better man and learn from my mistakes. All I can do is pray for the women who arenÕ t in my life anymore, and just move on. ItÕ s hard though because I will always love them. You know they say the hardest part is letting go. I agree.

2010 Canadian Aboriginal Festival by Loonkwe From November 26-28 2010 New Tribe Magazine was able to get an in depth scoop with the infamous Canadian Aboriginal Festival to learn the events, the people, the traditions and the fun that make this international gathering of aboriginal cultures stand our from other festivals of its kind. The festival, the Ò signature eventÓ for Canadian Aboriginal peoples was staged at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario over four days with attendances of over 40,000 visitors taking in the festival and culture. The festival has something for everyone, the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, Education Day, Lacrosse skills Competition, music and performing venues, traditional foods, more than 250 information booths, largest Pow Wow market place and Pow Wow in Canada. IÕ d like to say it is the ultimate stop on the Canadian Pow Wow trail.

Turtle Concepts This year, like previous years I attended the Canadian Aboriginal Festival as a Turtle. However this time I was doing the inside scoop and in order for New Tribe Magazine readers to fully understand and appreciate the festival I had to do it from my perspective as a part of Turtle Concepts.

Aboriginal Education Day

Turtle Concepts is an Independent company that has a massive primary objective: Youth Empowerment! Over 1000 Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities nationally have been positively affected and influenced by the messages Turtle Concepts deliver. Whether it is their many diversified workshops, retreats, youth dances, public speaking, fashion shows, photo shoots or youth boot camps Turtle Concepts knows how to get their audience engaged and believing in themselves.

Education Day is organized with the assistance and support of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario, the Ontario Teachers Federation, the Ontario English Catholic TeacherÕ s Association, INAC, the Ministry of Education and Hydro One. Hundreds of students from the Hamilton and surrounding area attended. These young minds observed and absorbed the Aboriginal culture at its best with specifically designed teaching stations that outlined heritage, culture, traditional games, dancing and much more that are directly tied to their learning curriculum for Native Studies. The youth were all ecstatic and eager to participate in Education Day designed specifically for their learning; and their enthusiasm was felt throughout the entire day.

Founder, Jaegar David Ò DaveÓ Jones has been successfully managing Turtle Concepts since 1999. With over a decade of motivating Indigenous people all over the continent under his belt he has earned himself the 2010 National Dreamcatcher Award for Education. I had a great opportunity to have a oneon-one interview with Jaegar. DaveÕ s passion for Aboriginal people came at an early age, growing up on reserve he never saw only black and white; he saw equality and great things. It wasnÕ t until his teenage years he became aware of a difference between Aboriginal people and non-Aboriginal people that shouldnÕ t be there. HeÕ s devoted and determinated to defeat the common stereotypes and change the destructive thinking and behavioral patterns of

26

NEW TRIBE FEBRUARY 2011

many Aboriginal youth today. He has committed himself to projecting that there is a NEW stereotype amongst Aboriginal people that isnÕ t dropping out of school, substance abuse, suicides and teen pregnancies; its having confidence, achieving and being successful. Ò Growing up I never knew it was wrong to be Native, I always grew up thinking it was cool!Ó - Jaegar Being a Turtle at the Canadian Aboriginal Festival gave me so many fun and lifelong memories and experiences. The three day long fashion show had me modeling renowned Indigenous designers like Bruno Henry, and Dan Jones. At the CAMAs I was able to be a part of the production as well as network with so many attendees. With being involved in the fashion shows, helping out behind the scenes at the CAMAs, networking and meeting other inspiring native people brought me to the conclusion that I want to be a Ò Turtle for life!Ó . The Canadian Aboriginal Festival and events with Turtle Concepts is the most amazing weekend of my year. www.turtleconcepts.com The Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards This year marked the 12th Annual Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards. Taking place for the second year at the Hamilton Place Theatre the star studded night was exquisite from performances and awards to the lovely and entertaining hosts Derek Miller and Susan Aglukark. My job as a part of the Turtle Concepts team was to get all dressed up and greet all the attendees and audience upon arrival; this included hitting the red carpet for

COMMUNITY some photo ops! As people started to arrive the musical atmosphere filled the

d o w n t o w n Joey Stylez and Will Hamilton area. Bells jingled and everyone was called to their seats so the show we had all been waiting for could commence. The 3 hours consisted of breath taking performances by Gabriel Ayala and Eagle & Hawk as well as, hip hop sensations Joey Stylez and stellar dual performance by Feenix and Will Belcourt. Other performances included Janet Panic, Sister Says, Wayne Lavallee, Desiree Dorion and Diyet. The night continued on with well deserved acknowledgements and awards all being broadcasted by CITYTV. I was able to be both behind stage and in the audience enjoying the show. When I asked Feenix what his keys to success in the music industry he replied Ò You get what you give..you canÕ t let anything bring you down like partying and drama, just work hard.Ó All in all, it was a great experience that I encourage everyone to witness and I intend on participating for many years to come. Pow Wow & The Market Pow Wows are one of the oldest, most important and colourful Aboriginal ceremonies. The Pow Wow is the centre piece of the Canadian Aboriginal Festival with visitors from all parts of Canada and around the world gathering in Hamilton at the Copps Coliseum to witness this

most beautiful traditional ceremony. The three Grand Entries were the

art, and more. This is a vital part of Aboriginal cultural expression and an excellent opportunity for visitors to shop for those special gifts and to add to their collections. It seemed like the Superstore for native arts and crafts as well as everything you could possibly need to create and design a regalia masterpiece. My favourite part of The Market however was the unlimited food stops. Indian tacos, tacos in a bag, hangover soup, fry bread and bologna; these vendors were like the Ò Iron ChefsÓ of Pow Wow cuisine. I seriously doubt I’ll find another perfect Indian taco like at the Canadian Aboriginal Festival.

Throughout the three days of non-stop fun and entertainment I was able to truly Belcourt spectacular highlight of appreciate gatherings like the Canadian the 17th Annual Canadian Aboriginal Festival. Sitting in the stands Aboriginal Festival. Everyone enjoyed observing the thousands of people the visually stunning display as nearly participating in a massive collaboration 1000 native of tradition and dancers celebration was and drum a realization I s i n g i n g will never lose. g r o u p s Our culture from across as Indigenous N o r t h people is America magnificent and j o i n e d so powerful together on that if we can the floor come together of Copps in large masses Coliseum. to celebrate our heritage Something imagine what f o r other positive, ever yone! beautiful and T h e influential things Canadian we could do Aboriginal and statements Festival is we could make. home to I loved my The Market, experience as a gathering a part of Turtle place for Concepts, I will vendors of never forget all Aboriginal the wonderful art, crafts people I met and Derek Miller and traditional food. Visitors IÕ ll forever remember the great will find a wide variety of clothing, opportunities I had at the Canadian jewellery, carvings, sculpture, fine Aboriginal Festival. NEW TRIBE FEBRUARY 2011

GAME*ON

Game Review Resident Evil 4 - PS2 Probably the best action horror game ever created has to be Resident Evil 4 for the Playstation 2. Not only did the translation carry over from the GameCube version, but so did the aweinspiring cinematic presentations. TheyÕ re an excellent addition to its exciting gameplay action. The game consists of extra bonuses and hidden secrets throughout. Because of its gory nature, the game is rated at a mature only level. So, itÕ s not for the overly sensitive. Extras were added to the Playstation 2 version as opposed to the GameCube version. A popular extra is the Separate Ways side story. You get to play as the spy Ada Wong, who often finds herself in the same boat as the gameÕ s protagonist, Leon. The cut scenes, side stories and other bonus secrets allow for more hours of great gameplay. Available in the Playstation 2 version are extra weapons and costumes that can be unlocked. Typically they’re achieved after completely the game first. You can use them during the second go round of the game. The gameplay is accented not only by superb controls of the Playstation 2, but also by the beautifully rendered scenery, and choreographic cut scenes. The back story, zombies and heroes make the game rewarding to play for hours on end.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed The force and a lightsaber are your only weapons in this game. The protagonist here is Starkiller, a secret apprentice of Darth Vader. Experience points are gained by finding necessary in-game artifacts and killing enemies. The artifacts are used to enhance StarkillerÕ s traits and powers to make him a more powerful adversary. The game focuses on the playerÕ s ability to use a combination of the force and lightsaber in order to defeat enemies. The Ò unleashedÓ capability introduced by the developers allowed for different types of gameplay based on the platform the game is played on. For example, Star Wars:The Force Unleashed for the Wii allows for a more social experience. The game allowed players to duel each other over an internet connection. Players also have an option to take the story in different directions. TheyÕ re given the option of going after and killing Darth Vader. Or, they pursue Emperor Palpatine to save Kota and receive a different ending. Expansions available for the game build on the storyÕ s ending, depending on which path the player decides to take. Enemies learn from the playerÕ s attacks and gradually change as the game progresses. It offers a challenge to the player, and keeps the attacks from becoming repetitive. But, because the gameplay is easy to learn, even the most challenged gamer can survive it to its final ending.

Turn up the Volume By Katty Jo Rabbit

Adele 21 When your 21 a lot happens, if youÕ re American youÕ re allowed to drink for one, if youÕ re Canadian youÕ re most likely in College, and looking towards the future. That is only if you are living a cookie cutter life, in most cases, you might even have a little one or two by this age, but for British singer Adele Atkins, you would be most likely releasing your second album and blowing critics out of the water who thought you would end up like Kate Nash or Lilly Allen. Who are in rehab somewhere or lingering on the verge of obscurity. Instead this second album sees Adele exploring the same lonely rooms of the ever tragically romantic breakup themes. This time being with a different perspective, she is not so “pity-me” but definitely more Ò forget youÓ , with the exception of the song Someone like you. Piano with a bare voice combo goes great with the lyrical content; where she sings of going to the ex lovers house and finds him happily moved on, (as this is being written, a huge tear ball is starting to develop in the throat) with a wife and settled down only to beg for a second chance. Wow! HavenÕ t we all been there? Maybe youÕ re there now, either way you will get through, and if you need to cry to this album, by all means, who could stop themselves with that voice of hers; it is also much cheaper than going to a therapist. With 11 songs, and a bonus track, if you were a fan before of chasing pavement, then you will remain a fan, because unlike all the other young stars, Adele does not have to rely on the electronic and dancehall antics to win over a crowd.

Smith Westerns Dye it Blonde There are three things that you need to do before you can honestly say you are a fan of music, first you need to listen to it in the car. Drive somewhere and if you find yourself on the highway to life, going further then you ever thought you would, then the music has passed the first test. Next, listen to the album start to finish, while doing housework, if you start to dance around, or catch yourself mid-wipe during a session of dishwashing, thinking of how great it would be to leave the real world and start a band, or thinking of pulling out that old guitar your granny gave you; then it has passed the second test. The final test is playing it while you are with friends, and if you all end up frolicking around, feeling playfully young and beautiful like a coke commercial then it has passed the longevity phase. So here we have a foursome from Chicago whose, bass player and lead singers are brothers, so nice to have your Ò broskiÓ with you on your road to fame. So second album, gone through the first test, passed, second test maybe this weekend, but in all reality it took one listen, and made a distinct mark on the heart. Some songs to check out: All die young, Imagine Pt. 3, and Weekend; all of these songs have some sort of catchy guitar riff, warm fuzzy bass licks, and some lyrical content that is nostalgic in every sense of the word. Thank goodness for garage rock, it has been showing itself here and there, and you will find it in every kind of flavour, so if you like T.Rex, Oasis, and the like, you will like this album. Not because they sound the same, only because they were influenced by these bands, some of it you can hear through the music.

Music You Can Feel In Your Toes Robyn Body Talk It has been five years since we have heard from this Swedish, er, Fembot, whose dancehall bubblegum pop has been compared to Lady GaGa, so in those five years she has been able to reinvent the wheel and make it all her own. By comparison, Robyn does not quite fit the glove. Only because she has her own style altogether, and while Gaga is pretty outlandish, and controlled, we find Robyn proving that she is a contender in the ring of radio dance hits. So with that, let us examine the evidence, Call your girlfriend, with the stage set and the lyrics reading: Call your girlfriend/itÕ s time you had the talk/Give your reasons/Say itÕ s not her fault/But you just met somebody new/And now itÕ s gonna be me and you/, you know it is going to be a good round. Because she is claiming that strength that most pop stars hide from, she is saying a lot with a good beat to back her up. Being able to tell your boyfriend how to break up with someone else, while causing the least emotional damage is pretty bold, and that is how this album goes. DonÕ t f*@king tell me what to do, is another song that draws you in, and spits you out. You know that Robyn is real, that she is actually living these songs, and causing these scenes. You know that even though she had released these songs on two other albums Pt.1 and Pt.2, this full length album gives you more than the rest, and then some; with five more tracks to finish it off. So check it out and don’t expect anything until you have heard it, because really when did Lady Gaga ever have a rap artist like Snoop Dogg come in on her songs? Either way, she gets the spotlight for now, and so be it, she deserves it.

Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy It is kind of sad, and scary to know that this rap genius has this weird obsession with Michael Jackson, sad because you know he wants to be the king, and scary because Michael was really bizarre in his antics and his personal life. You can almost see Kanye going down that road with his ego and mouth getting him into all these crazy scenes. LetÕ s just hope that he doesnÕ t take an interest in the youngest Culkin bother and start making Jesus juice. Anyways, this was something that slipped through the review list, and only came to light after his Monster collaboration with Nicki Minaj. It seems like anything that girl touches glitters gold. With this album you get music that is touched by it all, the only rap star to reinvent himself time and time again, is showing us all what it is that drives him, scares him, and interests him. He has the guts to really stand out and he does, not only with his music but with his style as well. Because it has been out for a while, and has been on the charts, it would only be fair to say that it came across as redundant, new and a little overdone. IsnÕ t that the way everything is though with Kanye, all judgment aside, it is actually something extremely well done in the fact that he knows how to manipulate the voice over. He is also making a great new fresh connection with his obsession with Michael Jackson, and even though he is self proclaimed as not a dancer or a singer, he sure knows how to keep that style that most seem to lose over the course of five albums. Check out these songs for proof, Gorgeous, All of the lights,Blame Game, Hell of a life, Runaway, and Monster, with contributing artists such as Kid Cudi, and Jay-Z, you know for sure that you will see this rap star at the awards show. Let us just hope that this is not the end of all his fantasyÕ s because what we would do in a world with no imagination or controversial stars. NEW TRIBE FEBRUARY 2011

See You at the Movies

MOV IES

Starring Jason Statham, Ben Foster, Tony Goldwyn The movies are always something we look forward to every year. This Year was no different; one of the new flicks out this year is The Mechanic staring Jason Stratham. The remake of the 1972 film of the same name is definitely one of the best films to come out this year, visually its action packed but it also contains some dramatic elements to it making it a must see. In the movie Jason Stratham plays Arthur Bishop, a Mechanic which is meant to mean elite hit man. In the movie he is famed in the assassin world for his stealth and efficiency.

The Mechanic

The premise tells he is a free agent hired by a very powerful secret agency that rules with an iron hand. The lonely Mr. Bishops whole operation gets shaken up when his mentor, played by Donald Sutherland is murdered. Revenge it would seem is imminent, for extra security Bishop enlists his mentorÕ s psychopathic son played by Ben Foster. Before they seek out vengeance Bishop trains his new apprentice in the art of death. StrathamÕ s normal tough persona is great in this movie, and FosterÕ s normal excessive alcohol consumption is evident in this movie. ItÕ s looking like one the yearÕ s best.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Rooney Mara, Bryan Barter Facebook, something we have all made a part of our sheltered lives. But who started it? And what idea started this new age social networking site? The film Social Network has these answers, looking to be one of the seasons best films it’s a must see. The biopic stars Jesse Eisenberg as the famed Mark Zuckerman, the creator of the powerful site facebook. An uplifting film in the sense that its a tail of ambition, and shows that for a moment that we all might be better off than the rich, that it might be better to be lower class and surrounded by love than filthy rich and miserably alone.

The Social Network

The thing that makes it differ from traditional biopics is how the protagonist is portrayed in this film. Mark Zuckerman is seen in this movie as a very brilliant but arrogant 19 year old, which most characters see as a stuck up lonely teenager. However the film does show that although heÕ s socially awkward, he is dangerously intelligent. ZuckermanÕ s desire for success is fueled by resentment in this movie; the movie is watched like a thriller despite its plot. The Social Network is one the yearÕ s best.
