SUPPORTING WRITERS ENCOURAGING CREATIVITY INSPIRING AUDIENCES

WELCOME TO NEW WRITING SOUTH At New Writing South we not only inspire, enable and nurture all kinds of talented creative writers - including young writers, but we also host and produce live literature events, book launches, author talks and much more. Last year 9282 people took part in NWS activities and enjoyed our events, masterclasses and performances both at The Writers’ Place, our home in the heart of Brighton’s bustling North Laines, and at our partner venues throughout the region. This autumn we have a fantastic and diverse programme. If you are an aspiring, emerging or professional writer check out the pink pages and sign up with some of the UK’s best writers and tutors; the blue pages are mostly for young people; for lovers of new writing, theatre and literature take a look at the purple events pages and if

you enjoy a good crime read (and who doesn’t) book now for An Evening with Martina Cole. We look forward to welcoming you this season.

VOICE John Agard

You who even the dumb rejoice in choreographing with fingers the miracle of speech on the parchment of the wind You who make dreams your element for the simple reason that you’re on the side of the tongue’s daring to enchant You who rattle the mouth’s gourd rather than join the dancing footsteps of the majority still dancing for their supper You who make memorable the poet’s word of flesh and bone distinct from the official Babel that turns death into collateral

Voice was commissioned

You who set free love’s bright syllable from behind history’s iron door that those who choose to take heed may stride towards the sky

by New Writing South as part of the Evolving in Conversation project with Jubilee Library, Photoworks and South East Dance.

Viva to you Voice urging the voiceless to be heard that even a cry in a wilderness can ignite the blooming of the world.

AN EVENING WITH MARTINA COLE Image: Charlotte Murphy

Bestselling crime writer Martina Cole talks about her writing and the stories that inspire her. Martina Cole is a phenomenon: with over twenty novels to her name, of which over a dozen have been No.1 bestsellers, she has spent more weeks in the No.1 slot on the original fiction bestseller list than any other adult novelist and she continues to smash sales records with each of her books, which have sold fourteen million copies in total. Not bad for someone who left school at fifteen with no qualifications. Martina’s novels are recognised as different type of crime novel. “I write from the criminal’s point of view. And I show what happens to their families.” Martina will be giving us a glimpse of her latest hard-hitting and uncompromising crime drama, Get Even. Martina has long been acknowledged as the number one author in UK prisons, and she has been a strong advocate for literacy and creative writing for prisoners. This event is presented by New Writing South in association with LLL Productions, for whom Martina will be contributing to a unique festival staged within the walls of HMP Lewes. www.leweslivelit.co.uk Wednesday 11 November 7.00pm (Doors 6.30pm) Brighton Dome Studio Theatre £12 6

BRIGHTON INSPIRED New Writing South, in collaboration with Brighton WordPress, wants to hear about the places in Brighton that inspire you. Throughout its rich history the city of Brighton and Hove has inspired many writers including Graham Greene, Peter James, Jane Austen, Nick Cave and Julie Burchill and we want to know about the places and moments that have inspired you. Whether it is the paragliders floating over the South Downs, the stormy seas crashing into the ruins of the West Pier or the Pride fireworks lighting up the summer sky, we want you to share your pictures, videos, music and stories. We will then

tag all your inspirational moments on to our multi-media digital map. Get in touch via Twitter, Facebook or Instagram using #BrightonInspired, or email us, and then go to http://www. brightoninspired.co.uk to view yours and other people’s inspiring places on the map. We want to initiate a conversation about Brighton and Hove and the way it stokes the imagination and so as well as the online options we will also be holding a drop in session at The Writers’ Place. We invite you to come and share your stories with us and discuss what it is that makes this city so inspirational.

Created by a writer, Wendy Ann Greenhalgh, for writers, these accessible, hands-on workshops explore creative ways that people can tell the story of the work they do to the outside world. MEET THE MAKERS Meet the Makers is a series of monthly salons encouraging writers to challenge themselves and their ideas of what contemporary drama can be. The line between stage play and performance art has become ever blurrier, while dramatic events increasingly escape theatre spaces – with venues, companies, festivals and audiences having proven admirably open to every imaginable kind of experience. New Writing South presents acclaimed theatre-makers from both the edge and the overlap to talk over their own work, experiences and feelings for the future. Rather than a lecture, we’re looking to host conversations – so consider yourself invited for peer-to-peer exchanges in an intimate setting. Tristan Sharps, dreamthinkspeak. The Artistic Director of one of Brighton’s biggest theatrical success stories - with critically-acclaimed productions all over the world - gives a rare insight into the particular challenges and rewards of producing site-specific work.

CREATIVE LEARNING “We take it in turns to lead an activity. I got to organise a workshop with a professional poet, which was a really exciting new experience and the workshop itself was successful, useful and fun. We talk to people who write professionally and hear their different advice and ideas! Meeting them in real life makes the idea of becoming a professional writer seem more achievable. It is useful to be able to ask questions, and focus on techniques/ genres we are interested in or want help with.” Coral – Oxford Squad

“The Squad has been an incredible experience that has given me so many opportunities, given me more confidence in my writing and made my writing noticeably more mature and of higher standard. It’s been amazing and I’m so glad to have been part of the Squad! There aren’t enough opportunities for creative writing for young people and without this so many young people won’t be able to improve and share their creativity.” Abbie – Towner Squad

WRITERS IN SCHOOLS Since 2003 writers from New Writing South’s Creative Learning Team have inspired creative approaches to teaching literacy in schools across the South East. Thousands of children and young people have been inspired by author visits, workshops and residencies in classrooms, after school clubs and off-site cultural venues. “Many of the children who write very little (as little as they can get away with) were very keen to write and finish their work to the best of their ability.” Peel Common School

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Our half-day and twilight professional development programmes bring teachers and writers together in creative sessions to share insights and explore new approaches to practice. Sessions are designed to develop two-way understanding and make the most of the relationship between visiting writers and classroom teachers. Sessions are fun, interactive and creative, with direct impact on the teaching and enjoyment of literacy and literature in the classroom. Writers and teachers work together to generate inspiring ideas, activities and resources suitable for children and young people at all stages of their school life.
