Dear Friends,
Welcome
On behalf of the entire New York Medical College community, we are delighted to welcome you to the 2011 Founder’s Dinner. Throughout its long history, New York Medical College has weathered many changes in the social, scientific, political, and economic environment. Yet its core competencies in health sciences education and research have remained sound, thanks to the ongoing commitment of generous partners like you. Institutions cannot progress without the help of many friends, and it has been through the development of strong partnerships with numerous constituents that this remarkable institution has succeeded in advancing its mission over the past 151 years. At no other time has the leadership, generosity, and commitment of the College’s partners been more important than it is today. As the sole academic health sciences center in the Hudson Valley region, New York Medical College has an important educational and healthcare mission to fulfill, and we take that responsibility very seriously. As the College continues to evolve as one of the great institutions for health sciences research and training in the nation, our focus is on continuing to develop the partnerships that are necessary to address the complex health challenges facing our nation. We applaud all of the benefactors who are working with us to maintain and strengthen the College’s leadership role in the 21st century. Your presence here this evening signals your belief in New York Medical College and your commitment to its success. Once again, thank you so much for your steadfast and essential role in the College’s ongoing quest for excellence. With sincere gratitude,
Ronald F. Poe Karl P. Adler, M.D. Chairman, Board of Trustees President & Chief Executive Officer 3

William Cullen Bryant Award
New York Medical College established the William Cullen Bryant Award in 1983 to recognize those remarkable individuals who, in the tradition of the College’s founder, William Cullen Bryant, demonstrate seminal leadership in health care, science, education, business, or the arts. Bryant, the son of a physician, was an editor, philosopher, poet, lawyer, and dynamic civic leader who substantively influenced the issues of his day through the power of his pen. He led a select group of individuals in creating what today has become one of the nation’s largest private health sciences universities. Bryant served as president of the College’s Board of Trustees for more than a decade and was the medical school’s first president. The qualities of distinguished and broad leadership that Bryant demonstrated have been characteristic of all William Cullen Bryant medal awardees.

Saverio S. Bentivegna, M.D. ’50, F.A.C.S. Having served the field of medicine for over fifty years, Dr. Saverio S. Bentivegna is an esteemed alumnus and cherished faculty member of New York Medical College as well as a highly respected surgeon in the community. Dr. Bentivegna began his medical studies at Boston University’s School of Medicine and then transferred to New York Medical College, where he earned his medical degree in 1950. He continued his education in general surgery at Metropolitan Hospital, Fordham Hospital, and Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals, and was eventually appointed chief surgical resident at Flower and Fifth Avenue and Metropolitan Hospitals. After serving as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1957 to 1959, Dr. Bentivegna returned to New York to begin his career as a surgeon and medical educator. He has held surgical positions with Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals, Metropolitan Hospital, Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers, Yonkers General Hospital, and Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in the Bronx. After having served as an attending surgeon at Westchester Medical Center for thirty years, he is now an attending physician in the department of surgery on its voluntary teaching staff. Dr. Bentivegna’s career as an educator began with an appointment as associate professor in surgery at New York Medical College in 1959. He was appointed a full professor in clinical surgery in 1974 and was named associate dean and director of continuing medical education in 1976. He currently holds the positions of professor of clinical surgery, director of the

surgical clerkship for third year students, and senior associate dean and director of the Fifth Pathway/Pre-Internship Program, which he has directed since 1974. From 1975 to 1977, Dr. Bentivegna was president of the College’s Alumni Association. He was elected to AOA, the medical honor society, as a faculty member. Dr. Bentivegna’s extensive contributions to the medical field are further evidenced by the number of professional organizations with which he has been associated. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, on whose Board of Governors he served from 1988 to 1994. He has also been a member of the American Association for Cancer Education, the American Trauma Society, the New York Cancer Society, the New York State and Westchester County Medical Societies, and the American Medical Association. He has served as a member of the New York State Board for Medicine for ten years. In addition to his well-established professional career, Dr. Bentivegna has received accolades for his service to the community. In 1964 he was made a member of the Honor Legion of the New York City Police Department, and in 1975 he was nominated for the Public Service Award of the American Committee for Italian Migration while serving on its Board of Directors. Other appointments include the Enrico Fermi Society, the Town Club of New Castle, Westchester County, and the Progressive Era Association of New York City. Dr. Bentivegna is the proud father of two sons and the loving grandfather of five grandchildren. Both sons are in the medical field. Peter, the eldest, is a graduate of New York Medical College, Class of 1985. Michael is a group marketing director, Pfizer US Animal Healthcare Division. Dr. Bentivegna and his wife, Kathleen, reside in Chappaqua, New York with their Great Pyrenees dog, Teddy.

Alumni Association New York Medical College
The Alumni Association of New York Medical College was established on March 15, 1883. Its objective was “promoting the interest and extending the influence of the College…By uniting in an organization of this kind, we are not only enabled to meet old friends and classmates in social reunion, clasp hands and recall memories of our College days, but also to aid materially in the advancement of medical education, for it is the intention to make this Association a potent force in attaining a still high degree of excellence in the various department of the College, and also to use its best efforts to advance its interests and extend it influence, l. to r.: Joseph F. Dursi, M.D. ’59, Eileen M. Dieck, M.D. ’86, thereby maintaining its position in Michael A. Antonelle, M.D. ’62, Louis E. Fierro, M.D. ’60, Christopher F. X. Riegler, M.D. ’88, Saverio S. Bentivegna, M.D. ’50 the front rank of medical colleges.” Clearly, under the leadership of each of the Alumni Association presidents the intent of the founders has been fulfilled. From the original membership of 295 doctors, it has grown to a membership nearing 12,000. Responsibilities of the Alumni Association have included fundraising for the College, nurturing of fellowship and communication among members, and providing programs of continuing medical education. Past fundraising efforts spearheaded by the Alumni Association presidents and its Board of Governors have endowed both a chair in biochemistry and molecular biology and a scholarship fund. Other efforts have supported expansion of laboratories for basic research, 11

development of programs in comparative medicine, creation of a computer center that is a major learning resource, and establishment of the Frank Speer Laboratory for clinical research. The Alumni Association has sponsored events for incoming classes during orientation and provided needed support for such activities as Student Senate programs and a Student Physician Awareness Day. Additionally, it holds a Reunion weekend where silver and gold diplomas are awarded to the 25th and 50th reunion classes and at which the graduating students are honored guests. Thanks to the foresight of its founders and the efforts and loyalty of its past and present presidents, the Alumni Association today continues to be a strong force behind the success of New York Medical College.
