NYMC just concluded a memorable year and is looking forward to the one ahead. We welcomed an outstanding incoming Class of 2021, signed several long term academic affiliation agreements with our most important hospital partners, received significant funding for our Disaster and Precision Medicine Center, and so much more. Tonight we are honoring four distinguished individuals who embody the spirit of committed partnership and outstanding leadership that lie at the heart of the College’s mission and success. • Dr. Mark Hasten – Alfred B. DelBello Distinguished Service Award • Robert G. Lerner, M.D. – Golden Faculty Service Award • Robert J. Lifton, M.D.’48 – William Cullen Bryant Award • Ira Schwartz, Ph.D. – Jackson E. Dr. Mark Hasten Dr. Mark Hasten, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of New York Medical College and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Touro College and University System, has led a remarkable life. During World War II, he hid his Jewish identity and served in the Polish Army, liberating the Majdanek death camp. He then immigrated to Israel on the ill-fated Altalena ship which was fired upon by the Haganah (the early Israeli Defense Forces) because they feared it was bringing illegal arms to Menachem Begin—a lifetime friend—and his Irgun group, who were waging their own battles against the British. Following the declaration of the State of Israel, Mark Hasten served for two years in the fledgling Israel Defense Forces. In the early 1950s, he moved to North America to attend university and start his career as an engineer. Anyone who has ever enjoyed a bendable straw, bowl of Cheerios, Pringles potato chips or Bugles snacks owes the experience to Mark Hasten. He invented and designed these products and the machines that produced them while he was Chief Development Engineer for General Mills. Dr. Hasten’s personal history can be found in a biographical book, Mark My Words!.
THE FOUNDER’S DINNER 2017
The William Cullen Bryant Award New York Medical College established the William Cullen Bryant Award in 1983 to recognize those remarkable individuals who, in the tradition of the College’s founder, William Cullen Bryant, demonstrate seminal leadership in health care, science, education, business or the arts. Bryant, the son of a physician, was an editor, philosopher, poet, lawyer, and dynamic civic leader who substantively influenced the issues of his day through the power of his pen. During the second half of the 19th century, he led a select group of influential individuals in creating New York Medical College, which today has become one of the nation’s largest private health sciences colleges. Bryant subsequently served as president of the College’s Board of Trustees for more than a decade and was the medical school’s first president. The qualities of distinguished and broad leadership that Bryant demonstrated have been characteristic of all William Cullen Bryant medal awardees.

The Jackson E. Spears Community Service Award The Jackson E. Spears Community Service Award is bestowed upon those individuals and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional service and commitment to our communities. It was created in 2000 to honor Jackson E. Spears, who served as a member of New York Medical College’s Board of Trustees for 60 years, from 1943 to 2003. Loyal, steadfast, sharp-witted, selfless, practical, wise and relentless in his promotion of the College and its mission, Mr. Spears was a member of virtually every Board committee during his tenure, frequently serving as chairman. He served as vice chairman of the Board from 1956 to 1964 and chairman from 1965 to 1970, and he was appointed acting president of the College twice. He also provided pivotal leadership in the decision to relocate the College from New York City to Valhalla in the early 1970s. A native of Dallas, Texas, Mr. Spears was a corporate executive in the textile industry until his retirement from Burlington Industries as a vice president in 1961. Throughout his career, he was also active in civic and community service. New York Medical College awarded Mr. Spears the first William Cullen Bryant medal and the Distinguished Service Award as well as honorary Doctor of Humane Letters and Doctor of Science degrees. The College continues to honor this valuable member of our community, who passed away in 2003.

Ira Schwartz, Ph.D. Dr. Ira Schwartz has been Professor and Chairman of Microbiology and Immunology at New York Medical College since 2002. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the City University of New York in 1973 and studied ribosome structure and function during a two year postdoctoral fellowship at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology. He was an assistant professor of biochemistry at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) from 1975-80 before joining the biochemistry faculty at New York Medical College in 1980. In addition to his primary appointment, Dr. Schwartz is also a professor of medicine and biochemistry and molecular biology at the college. He is a member of several journal editorial boards, has served on numerous NIH and American Heart Association review panels and is Chair of the external advisory board of the NIH-funded INBRE program for the state of Oklahoma. Dr. Schwartz has been an active NYMC leader, serving on many key committees while at the College. In his role as department chair, he has led the department to a position of excellence. Dr. Schwartz was awarded his first grant in 1975 and his research has been continuously funded since that time. He is author of more than 160 peer-reviewed publications, subject reviews and book chapters. Research activities in his laboratory focus on emerging tick-borne infectious diseases, primarily Lyme disease. His laboratory was one of the first to apply molecular analysis to the study of Borrelia burgdorferi, the microbe that causes Lyme disease, and pioneered the use of microarray technology to study transcriptional regulation and pathogenesis. His group developed molecular assays for detecting Borrelia in patient and tick samples and typing of clinical isolates. This led to the seminal observation that B. burgdorferi genotype predicted its capacity for causing invasive infection. These investigations led to current studies applying genomic and genetic approaches with the goal of identifying genes that may be responsible for Lyme disease pathogenesis. Dr. Schwartz and his wife Arlene, have been married for almost 50 years and are the proud parents of 3 married children and 13 grandchildren.

The lifelong learning. But most of all as the rock. The source of steady strength and stability for ma, for us children, for the grandchildren, for your workplace and community institutions. Reliability. Responsibility. Passion. And deep caring, always deep caring.
