A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

The past year has been a period of significant growth and foundational work for APTA New York, setting the stage for our organization's future This year at the Delegate Assembly, we honored our past Executive Director, Kelly Garceau, and our current one, Eileen Renaud This role has been the heartbeat of our association, and together with Juliet Barney and Erin Stack, they have provided strong and consistent support for our board and membership. They have diligently worked over the last year to perfect the transition to a remote workforce, maintain consistent service to our members, and collaborate with various volunteer teams to launch our new website, which went live on June 6th

APTA New York has focused on cultivating relationships with new strategic partners, including the Special Olympics of New York and Buffalo Adaptive Sports. We have met with both organizations to explore how we can uphold our code of conduct through volunteerism by providing our professional skills at the district and state levels Our goal is to better serve the participants of these organizations and enhance their access to physical therapy. We continue to seek similar partnerships as part of our Access to Health campaign this year.

Additionally, we have collaborated with a familiar partner, AOTA, in our efforts to enable PTAs and OTAs to serve Workers' Compensation patients, thereby improving access to appropriate care for this population.

"We engaged with lawmakers to emphasize the importance of our services within the healthcare arena..."

During the last legislative session, we engaged with lawmakers to emphasize the importance of our services within the healthcare arena, highlighting our ability to deliver excellent outcomes and substantial cost savings to the current healthcare system.

In addition to advocating for the PTA/OTA Workers' Compensation bill, we have pushed for a fairer co-pay system through our co-pay bill, sought changes in supervision requirements for PTAs to align with OTAs, and continued to address the arbitrary limitations of our current direct access system.

REMEMBERING DR. MICHAEL MATTIA

Dr Michael Mattia passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. He was a beacon of light and inspiration for APTA New York for 40 years and will be deeply missed throughout our community.

Dr. Mattia served our profession tirelessly as a former leadership liaison, Advisory Panel on Legislation Chair, Delegate, Director, Payment Committee Chair, Political Action Committee Chair, and ultimately, former President. In all of the many roles Mike filled, he was a staunch and relentless advocate for our great profession, working endlessly in the pursuit of bettering our profession, fighting for direct access, expansion of our practice act, and championing better payment for Physical Therapists for "the yeoman's work they do". Advocating for the profession was a labor of love for Dr Mattia.

To many, Mike was known as a successful business owner, an exceptional educator, and administrator, but most importantly to him he was a Physical Therapist. Mike touched the lives of countless patients, students, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals, all while being a loving father, grandfather, and wonderful husband.

To many of us who met him through APTA, he was a leader, a mentor and a trusted friend

Our prayers and thoughts are with the entire Mattia family during this difficult time. We express our sincerest condolences and wish them all the best in the difficult weeks and months ahead

Dr. Mattia, will always be remembered, and will always be a part of APTA New York.
