Mondays 9am - 12pm

Mondays 7pm - 9pm

To draw is to express yourself in a special visual language. Learn how the language enables you to render on a flat page the spaces and volumes that you observe around you. As we work from the live model and other subjects, we consult historical examples to see how artists have used shape, plane, and rhythm. Awaken yourself to the sensation of seeing a whole page develop at once. Discover the pleasure of making your drawing move, and express yourself in this particular visual language.

This class will teach essential anatomy for figure drawing. Anatomy will be taught and discussed as a tool to create expressive, interesting figure drawings. Artistry will be emphasized. We will analyze the “magic of old master drawings. Students will also learn the basic shading techniques, expression of line, building solid planes, portrait construction, and a variety of other topics, through lectures and examples. Working with a live model, poses will range from quick gesture poses to longer poses. Some drawing experience required for this class.

$300

$200

Constructing the Figure Jenny Carolin Tuesdays 1pm - 4pm Learn to construct solid and anatomically correct figure and portrait drawings. Through lectures, demonstrations and individual instruction this course will cover the anatomical, structural and surface forms of the head and figure. With a focus on the gesture as our starting point, we will identify the line of the body and develop the constitution of the figure through sequentially longer poses. There will be an emphasis on proportion, tone, line quality and light on form. Additionally, we will introduce materials beyond charcoal, including India ink and chalk pastels, to accentuate fluidity and movement. Drawing is the foundation of many forms of visual expression and by concentrating on the foundational principles of drawing the figure, students will expand their knowledge through direct observation of the live model. Open to all levels. $300

Drawing: The Figure Eric Michelson Fridays 9:30am - 12:30pm Understanding the basics of drawing the figure allows you to organize light, shade, gesture, and rhythm into a single expressive whole. Working individually with the instructor, you’ll be introduced to varied drawing approaches and techniques, and develop your skills and insights. Open to students of all levels. $300

Painting: The Essential Elements Henry Finkelstein Mondays 12:30pm - 3:30pm Explore your potential as you handle the material of oil paint. Learn to stretch canvases, prepare surfaces, and clean brushes correctly. Become acquainted with the language of painting through different approaches to working from life. Historical examples will be presented. While not necessary, the student is encouraged to continue for the 16-week semester. Being a structured 16 week course, in which one exercise leads to another. It runs through the first and second quarters and repeats again through the third and fourth quarters. Students can enter in the second or the fourth quarter as long as they understand that some of the information will have already been covered. $300

Tuesdays 4pm - 7pm

Explore a variety of media in this intensive, transformative learning experience for artists ready to work at the professional level. Lectures, conceptual study, and studio activity will encompass your painting. You’ll be encouraged to use any technique and embark on your own individual projects.

This class will introduce historically based skills and concepts for figure drawing and oil painting. Each lesson will discuss principles such as proportion or gesture and clearly define and demonstrate a path to improvement. The instructor will start by showing how to simplify the subject into accurate shapes and values which are essential for achieving a likeness of the subject. Later, discussion surrounding light, anatomy, and color will help bring refinement and resolution to the painting or drawing. Students unfamiliar with these concepts will begin by drawing in graphite pencil, and more advanced students may work in oils. The model will assume the same pose for multiple sessions so that each lesson can be thoroughly implemented and understood.

10 Painting Figure: Painting the Model in Costume, with a Focus on Portrait Gabriela Dellosso Mondays 4pm - 7pm Paint or draw the human figure in costume, delving into themes such as historical dress, the use of hats, musical instruments, and other evocative or historically significant props. Develop a fuller understanding of light and shadow, warm and cool colors, sculptural strokes, and simple, expressive shapes while using the painting medium of your choice, including oil, pastel, or watercolor. There will be a focus on creating the portrait; it will teach the student to draw and paint facial features more accurately and 3-dimensionally. The instructor will analyze the structure of the eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, chin, and ears. For oil painters, we will provide you with a painting medium that is non-toxic and allows painters to achieve wonderful results without toxic fumes. We will be using a refined non-toxic linseed oil in this class as an oil painting medium. Open to all levels. $300

Classical Painting: The Techniques Eric Michelson Mondays 7pm - 10pm Focus on traditional oil painting techniques that are rarely taught but incredibly useful for painters of all styles. Experiment with underpainting and grisaille techniques, as well as alla prima exercises to improve your understanding of composition, value, and color. The goal will be to explore the rich variety of painting approaches and methods used since the Renaissance. All levels are welcome. $300

Abstract Painting: The Process Cathy Choi Tuesdays 1pm - 4pm This class emphasizes process in Abstract Painting. Through theme based exercises, the class together creates variations in a particular focus, using primarily acrylic, charcoal, and ink. Develop your own intuitive responses by placing greater emphasis on spontaneity and visual sensation by using repetition, color, line, and lyricism. $300

Studio Landscape/Cityscape Bennett Vadnais

Tuesdays (Begins Fall Session 2) 1pm - 4pm This class, students will learn how to create a completed landscape or cityscape painting from start to finish. Students will learn how to select a subject and refine their ideas using sketches and drawings. Vadnais will explain and demonstrate how to create a useful under painting as a foundation for subsequent layering of color. Finally, Vadnais will guide the class through the process of bringing their picture to a unified finish with all the desired effects and relevant details. Painting technique, linear and atmospheric perspective, color theory, and art history will be discussed as it relates to individual projects. Open to all levels, some drawing experience is recommended. $300

11 Painting Techniques Edmond Rochat Wednesdays 7pm - 10pm This class introduces traditional oil painting techniques for the art of still-life. The class will first create a small compositional sketch in oils. At the time color theory will be emphasized along with its practical application to color mixing. Then a line-drawing will be created which will be transferred to canvas or panel. On this foundation, a monochromatic underpainting will be crafted to which layers of semi-transparent color are added. Concepts pertaining to light, form, composition, and proportion will be cover throughout the class. All levels are welcome. $300

Contemporary Figure Painting Jenny Carolin

Thursdays 9:30am - 12:30pm Learn to create unique and personal paintings while working from a live model. This class engages students in a studio practice that explores the technical and theoretical creation of works of art. There will be a mixed focus on portraiture and nude figure painting throughout the semester. The course will progress from observation and analysis of painting the live model, to the integration of imagination and personal expression into your work. Students will be encouraged to utilize composition, color, cropping, and context to develop their own visual language in their work. Classes will include demonstrations, discussions and individual instruction at the easel. Discussions and handouts will cover the stages to developing a painting, comparative measuring, proportion, and structure, as well as appropriation and the use of photography as reference material. Open to all levels. $300

Artists are encouraged to work from source material that is personal to them and to engage in a dialogue with contemporary exhibiting artists whose work is relevant to their own. It is anticipated that each artist will develop a deeper understanding of their own inclinations and the role they play in the creation of their artwork with the ultimate goal of developing a coherent body of work. The class is open to all levels. The instructor will be present on Thursday all day. $750
