Welcome to the New York School of the Arts. We are a school and a cultural center. Our humane approach and our love for art, together with our commitment to innovation and experimentation, enable artists to develop and realize their artistic visions – or simply enjoy the process of creativity. At our school, you will feel at home as part of our close community of dedicated artists. They range from novices to professionals of all ages. 05 Registration Policy PAYMENTS:

REFUND POLICY:

We accept personal checks, debit/credit cards, and money orders. The School does not accept cash. Returned checks will incur a $30 fee. New students are required to pay a one-time nonrefundable $50 registration fee.

To receive a refund, you must notify us in writing at registration@newyorkschoolofthearts.org. There is a $15 administrative fee for each refund.

PRORATE: We do not prorate fees if a participant wishes to register after the class has already begun. We do not prorate for missed classes. HOLIDAYS AND CANCELED LESSONS: We are closed for Thanksgiving, winter and spring break. If we must close due to weather, we will send out an email as well as update social media. The New York School of the Arts follows New York City Public Schools for weather-related closings. If classes are canceled, the instructor will work with the school office to schedule a makeup date. We do not refund/prorate for weather closure, and our make-up policy still applies.

In order to receive a full refund, students must withdraw from a class or workshop twelve days prior to the first day of classes. Students withdrawing from a class and workshop during the week before the beginning of the quarter will receive a 75% refund as school credit if within twelve days of the start of the class. No refunds will be made after the second class without medical documentation and no refunds will be made after a workshop begins. Ceasing to attend class without notifying the school does not constitute withdrawal from class. Refunds are issued in the same form as payment. Refunds are issued within thirty days from request in the form of the same payment. Registration and service fees are non-refundable.

CLASS CANCELLATION:

TRANSFER POLICY:

Classes and workshops are subject to cancellation if the minimum number of students required for a session are not met. Notification will be sent to registered students five days before the class is scheduled to begin.

All transfers must occur before the second meeting of class. Transfers from one course into another may incur additional fees, depending on the transfer. Transfer from one workshop to another is not permitted. There is a $15 administrative fee for each transfer.

LOCKERS: Each locker rental is $10.00 per month. To rent a locker at the New York School of the Arts, you must be enrolled in a class for the session in which the rental applies. If a student intends to reserve the same locker for consecutive sessions, the student must update their locker registration before the last day of the session.

08 Drawing Constructing the Figure

Drawing: Form and Movement

Mondays November 13 - January 22 9am - 12pm

Learn to construct solid and anatomically correct figure and portrait drawings. Through lectures, demonstrations and individual instruction this course will cover the anatomical, structural and surface forms of the head and figure. Participant will be taken through a range of short and long poses to explore the gesture as well as the creation of highly finished drawings. There will be an emphasis on proportion, tone, structure and light on form. Drawing is the foundation of many forms of visual expression and by concentrating on the foundational principles of drawing the figure students will expand their knowledge through direct observation of the live model. Open to all levels.

To draw is to express yourself in a special visual language. Learn how the language enables you to render on a flat page the spaces and volumes that you observe around you. As we work from the live model and other subjects, we consult historical examples to see how artists have used shape, plane, and rhythm. Awaken yourself to the sensation of seeing a whole page develop at once. Discover the pleasure of making your drawing move, and express yourself in this particular visual language.

Drawing: Anatomy and Artistry Gabriela Dellosso

Mondays November 13 - January 22 7pm - 9pm This class will teach essential anatomy for figure drawing. Anatomy will be taught and discussed as a tool to create expressive, interesting figure drawings. Artistry will be emphasized. We will analyze the “magic” of old master drawings. Students will also learn the basic shading techniques, expression of line, building solid planes, portrait construction, and a variety of other topics, through lectures and examples. Working with a live model, poses will range from quick gesture poses to longer poses. Some drawing experience required for this class. $300

Drawing: The Figure Fridays November 17- January 26 9:30am - 12:30pm Understanding the basics of drawing the figure allows you to organize light, shade, gesture, and rhythm into a single expressive whole. Working individually with the instructor, you’ll be introduced to varied drawing approaches and techniques, and develop your skills and insights. Open to students of all levels. $300

Graphite, Gouache, Watercolor, Oil paint and Colored Pencils. Experiment with a variety of mediums in combination with various types of paper. The surface directly influences mark making whether your style is traditional or contemporary. Many different artists used mixed media on paper such as Degas, Romare Bearden, Jasper John, Jim Dine and Rauschenberg just to name a few. The possible combinations are endless, but the basic idea is to combine and layer materials to create a unique visually interesting aesthetic works on paper. Students will be encouraged to create work from their choice of subjects such as still life, figure, designs and their own sketches and ideas. Each student will discover their own visual language. All styles and levels welcome.

Produce a video from concept to completion using a video camera and Final Cut Pro X editing software. Designed for students interested in all forms of film and video, we’ll examine examples of Hollywood and indie productions, video installations for galleries and museums, stopmotion and experimental films and advertising to explore the crossover between fine art videos and commercial filmmaking. Work together or individually to create storyboards, drawing, or beat sheets for organizing a plan with visual structure. A final goal is the production of a polished video with a basic understanding of editing for picture with an emphasized consideration of sound. Must have own portable external drive 1-2TB, 7200rpm to use in class. Mac computers are available for use in class. All levels are welcome.

10 Painting Abstract Painting: Development of Language and Imagery Peter Bonner

Wednesdays - Fridays November 15 - January 26 9am - 12pm This class focuses on developing each artist’s inclination to make abstract art through a range of activities, studying in particular how to explore one’s inspiration and ideas via process and using a language specific to each artist to develop coherent abstract images. We will source work in the landscape, in particular, Central Park, and developed them in the studio. Working through these sources, each artist will develop a greater sense of touch and consequently a deeper understanding of their own inclinations and the role they play in their painting. Saturdays November 18 - January 27 1pm - 4pm Research the essential elements of modern abstraction while also developing the essential nature of your personal vision. Through individual attention and group assignments, reviews, and presentations, we will examine the rich history and contemporary trends of abstraction: painters, process, and theory. Experimentation and research of alternative mediums, applications, formats, surfaces, and even digital technology will be encouraged to help to realize your unique body of work that reflects a more sophisticated engagement and understanding of formal and theoretical concerns. Through theme based exercises, the class together creates variations in a particular focus, using primarily acrylic, charcoal, and ink. Develop your own intuitive responses by placing greater emphasis on spontaneity and visual sensation by using repetition, color, line, and lyricism. $300

Wednesdays November 15 - January 24 7pm - 10pm Focus on traditional oil painting techniques that are rarely taught but incredibly useful for painters of all styles. Experiment with underpainting and grisaille techniques, as well as alla prima exercises to improve your understanding of composition, value, and color. The goal will be to explore the rich variety of painting approaches and methods used since the Renaissance. All levels are welcome. $300

Contemporary Figure Painting Kristy Gordon

Tuesdays & Thursdays November 14 - January 25 9am - 12pm Learn to create unique and personal paintings while working from a live model. This class engages students in a studio practice that explores the technical and theoretical creation of works of art. There will be a mixed focus on portraiture and nude figure painting throughout the semester. The course will progress from observation and analysis of painting the live model, to the integration of imagination and personal expression into your work. Students will be encouraged to utilize composition, color, cropping, and context to develop their own visual language in their work. Classes will include demonstrations, discussions and individual instruction at the easel. Discussions and handouts will cover the stages to developing a painting, comparative measuring, proportion, and structure, as well as appropriation and the use of photography as reference material. Saturdays November 18 - January 27 9am - 12pm Students in this course will explore and practice painting techniques to create exciting and compelling still lifes and portraits with oil paint. Traditional and contemporary approaches will be discussed while learning the fundamentals of color, form, composition, proportions, and perspective. Develop what it takes to make images happen and make them come alive. Experiment with different techniques such as glazing, knife painting, dry brush, broken color, and wet-in-wet. paint to enhance a personal creative expression. Students will be encouraged to do a series of paintings while elaborating on their own visual language. Open to all levels. $300

Explore a rich variety of methods, including brushwork, knife techniques, glazing, and anatomy. Develop a critical eye by deemphasizing distracting details to construct a compelling image. All levels welcome. $300

This class will introduce historically based skills and concepts for figure drawing and oil painting. Each lesson will discuss principles such as proportion or gesture and clearly define and demonstrate a path to improvement. The instructor will start by showing how to simplify the subject into accurate shapes and values which are essential for achieving a likeness of the subject. Later, discussion surrounding light, anatomy, and color will help bring refinement and resolution to the painting or drawing. Students unfamiliar with these concepts will begin by drawing in graphite pencil, and more advanced students may work in oils. The model will assume the same pose for multiple sessions so that each lesson can be thoroughly implemented and understood. The instructor will be present on Mondays and Wednesdays.

This class will help you to start or continue the practice and criticism of painting. Open-ended exercises stimulate creative and technical growth, while individual instruction can help you develop your awareness of critical concepts. Students work individually with the instructor and then come together for a group discussion once a month. What does it take to be creative, selfexpressive, conceptually sound and an innovator in today’s Art world? You will work to develop your personal project to create work that has both visual and conceptual impact. Please note that this class does not use a model. The instructor will be present on Fridays.

Mondays November 13 - January 22 4pm - 7pm Paint the human figure in costume, delving into themes such as historical dress, the use of hats, musical instruments, and other evocative or historically significant props. Develop a fuller understanding of light and shadow, warm and cool colors, sculptural strokes, and expressive simple shapes while using the painting medium of your choice, including oil, pastel, or watercolor. Open to all levels. $300

Painting: The Essential Elements Mondays November 13 - January 22 1pm - 4pm Explore your potential as you handle the material of oil paint. Learn to stretch canvases, prepare surfaces, and clean brushes correctly. Become acquainted with the language of painting through different approaches to working from life. Historical examples will be presented. While not necessary, the student is encouraged to continue for the 16-week semester. Being a structured 16 week course, in which one exercise leads to another. It runs through the first and second quarters and repeats again through the third and fourth quarters. Students can enter in the second or the fourth quarter as long as they understand that some of the information will have already been covered. $300

14 Printmaking Alternative Processes in Printmaking Karen Lindsay

Thursdays November 16 - January 25 12:30pm - 4:30pm Create images rather than capture them. Fine art papers, hand-applied archival emulsions, and the mercurial effects of chemistry and changing light provide surprises and opportunities for the adventurous image-maker. Topics will include cyanotypes, toning, paper selection, and photograms. Most materials will be provided. All levels are welcome. Overall you will go home with your marvelous complete edition! $350

Intro to Printmaking Kathy Caraccio

Mondays & Tuesdays November 13 - January 23 4:30pm - 7:30pm This hands-on class will introduce basic techniques and tools, encouraging students to develop individual projects in mediums including drypoint, monotype, chine colle, carborundum, color viscosity, paper lithography, and embossment. We will handle and discuss fine art, Western, and Asian papers. In the spirit of green printing, the workshop features environmentally-friendly water miscible inks. Printmaking: Intaglio, Monoprint and New Experiences Kathy Caraccio

Mondays - Wednesdays November 13 - January 24 9:30pm - 12:30pm This workshop will serve as a guided exploration of combining and creating relief, intaglio, and mono printing and experimenting with a variety of image making in prints. We will carve, incise, transfer images, and learn the secrets of ink on paper. Students will be encouraged to develop individual projects layering plates and creating textural images built from a variety of materials. In the spirit of green printing, the workshop features environmentally-friendly water miscible inks. Printmaking experience in monotype, relief, or lithography is desirable but not mandatory. Discover the creative potential of printmaking, starting with monotypes and dry-point and moving to more complicated techniques of etching, aquatint, and color viscosity roller techniques. You’ll learn to combine technical skill and expression into works of art. This course is ideal whether you’re a beginner who wants to understand the process of making a print, or someone who wants to improve technique.

Visits to museums and galleries, as well as lectures on the history of art, video, and photography, will immerse you in New York City’s abundance of cultural possibilities.

Learn to use technology as a powerful tool for your art career. You will learn how to effectively research opportunities, build an online portfolio, website or blog, and submit work online. Using social networking, you’ll learn how to promote yourself and design your own branding to attract traffic to your website. Personal laptops are required.

This experimental class will cover essential entrepreneurial skills, such as how to archive, promote, exhibit, curate, buy, and sell art. Learn about the various players in the art world, as well as how to prepare a portfolio and organize an exhibition. Tackle all aspects of the art business, ranging from loan agreements to shipping, insuring, storing, and marketing. $200

20 The Sculpture: Remixing the Ordinary Nadia Martinez

Thursdays & Fridays November 16 - January 26 9:30am - 12:30pm Explore the transformative qualities and learn to use inexpensive and even disposable materials to transform the ordinary and familiar into the extraordinary. With an emphasis on “play,” you will work with discarded materials including textiles, vinyl, Styrofoam, cardboard, and a range of industrial remnants while expanding your visual vocabulary and developing a professional art practice. The Sculpture: Unconventional Materials Nadia Martinez

Saturdays November 18 - January 27 10am - 4pm

Thursdays & Fridays November 16 - January 26 1pm - 4pm

Learn the basic traditional technique of terracotta sculpture, including clay-work skills, modeling, and handling the process of the clay from wet to dry then baked in a kiln. Through demonstration and individual instruction, you will learn to make a complete sculpture in terracotta. Sculpture in a variety of styles will be encouraged. Open to all levels.

Visualize and produce sculptures of different scales using a mix of unconventional and unusual materials. You’ll focus on design principles, repetition, contrast, rhythm, balance, and movement to create sculpture and/ or installations. Students are welcome to work with any kind of materials – whether new or old, purchased, recycled, or found. The instructor will be present on Thursdays.

22 Watercolor Watercolor: The Exploration Elizabeth O’Reilly

Elizabeth O’Reilly

This course will combine loose and controlled watercolor techniques focusing on both still life seasonal motifs which are in bloom and the model. A major focus will be on composition, color, and issues related to the mediums. Students will receive individual attention and instruction, as well as group critiques at the end of each class. There will be a brief demonstration for those who are unfamiliar with the medium.

Watercolor: Still Life, Model, Life

Work from still life and the model. Emphasis will be on massing in layered, transparent washes initially with a gradual buildup of detail through color and tone. The particular qualities of various pigments will be examined and incorporated to build up areas of transparency and opacity, with emphasis on composition and rhythm. The instructor will be present on Thursdays. $550

Perception as a source for imagery will be explored in this class. Formal elements of painting such as composition, tone, and color will be pursued while maintaining an appreciation for the immediacy and fluidity of watercolor. We will cover basic technique such as wet on wet, dry brush, color mixing by layers and so on. Individual attention demonstrations and group critiques will help each student develop their own voice. All levels are welcome, although prior drawing experience is helpful.

Weiqing Yuan

Gain an understanding of traditional watercolor techniques: wet-into-wet, layering transparent washes and experimenting with various papers. The instructor—classically trained in portrait, figure, cityscape, and landscape—will demonstrate loose and controlled watercolor techniques. Teaching will be individually adapted to your direction and level. The instructor will be present on Tuesdays and Thursdays. $1,200
