The New York School of the Arts is offering a special 4-week session of workshops beginning October 16th. This series has been designed to explore both traditional and non-traditional techniques and to explore new materials in an environment that is comfortable and inspiring. We will offer a variety of workshops in different mediums each week, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and new media.

Workshops OCT 16 – 20 A New Season for New Paintings

Drawing the Figure

October 16, 17, 19 (3 days) 1 - 4 PM Maurizio Pellegrin I n this i ntensive learni ng experi ence with a variety of media, you will produce paintings with the rule of three: 3 small paintings per session (a total of 9) or 1 painting per session (a total of 3). We will plant the seeds for an entire season of painti ng. $400.00

October 18 - 20 (3 days) 9 AM - 12 PM Eric Michelson The basics of drawing the figure allow the regulati on of light, shade, gesture, and rhythm into a single expressive whole. Working individually with the instructor, students will be introduced to a variety of drawing approaches and techni ques, and develop skills and insights. Open to students of all levels and ready to treasure a passion that will remain within them. $300.00

Perceptual Watercolor October 16 - 17 (2 days) 9 AM - 12 PM Kamilla Talbot Students will work from the still life in this two day workshop. We will investigate the formal elements of painting such as composition, tone, and color while maintaining an appreciation for the immediacy and fluidity of watercolor. I ndividual attenti on and group critiques will help each student develop their voice. All levels are welcome, as well as the use of all water-based media. $200.00

One Shape in Three Sessions October 18 - 20 (3 days) 1 - 4 PM Ingo Appel Students will gain extensive knowledge and familiarity with the technical aspects and methodology of sculpture. All media and processes will be considered; including wood, clay, metal, plaster, and more. I ndividual needs will be considered and addressed to find th e necessary personal soluti on. This workshop will help you to plan for the entire year. $300.00


Portrait Drawing

for organizing a plan with visual structure. A fi nal goal is the producti on of a short individual video. Must have own portable external drive 1 -2TB, 7200rpm (not 5400rpm) to use in class. All levels are welcome.

Yuka Imata Learn to draw the structural landmarks of the facial anatomy by combi ning the variati ons of form and plane. We will begin by simpli fying light and shadow to create shapes with a step-by-step approach, which will then allow students to build the detail of the face and achieve a likeness with human expressi on. Three dimensional effect with depth of space will be introduce d. All levels are welcome.

Projects in Abstract Painting October 26 - 27 (2 days) 9 AM - 12 PM Peter Bonner This workshop will offer a range of activities; exploring inspirati on and ideas, i nvestigating processes and using a language specific to each artist to develop coherent abstract images. Open to all levels.

Cyanotype October 18 - 20 (3 days) 1 - 4 PM Karen Lindsay Create images rather than capture them. Fine art papers, hand-applied archi val emulsions, and the mercurial effects of chemistry and changing light provide surprises and opportuni ties for the adventurous image-maker. Topi cs will include cyanotypes, toni ng, paper selecti on, and photograms. Most materials will be provided. All levels are welcome. Overall you will go home with your marvelous complete edition! $300.00

Exploring Watercolor and the Techniques October 24, 26, 27 (3 days) 9 AM - 12 PM Elizabeth O'Reilly Gain an understanding of traditional watercolor techni ques: wet-into-wet, layering transparent washes and experimenting with various papers. The i nstructor—classically trained in portrait, figure, cityscape, and landscape—will demonstrate loose and controlled watercolor techni ques. Teaching will be i ndividually adapted to your direction and level. Open to all levels. $300.00

New Projects in Drawing Three Sessions for a Small Exciting Movie October 23, 30, Nov 6 (3 days) 1 - 4 PM

Hall Powell Produce a video from concept to completion using your own video camera or phone camera. Work together or i ndividually to create storyboards, drawing, or beat sheets

October 23, 24, 26 (3 days) 1 - 4 PM Henry Finkelstein Visual structure and personal discovery will help guide you through drawing from various subjects, developing skills along the way. Students will enj oy the act of drawing, and overall, they will learn how to overcome fear in order to create controlled or s pontaneous drawings. $300.00


OCT 30 - NOV 3 Terracotta Dreams

Understanding Facial Features

November 1 - 3 (3 days) 1 - 4 PM

October 31 - November 1 (2 days) 1 - 4 PM Gabriela Dellosso This is a workshop designed to bri ng a deeper understanding to the student of how to draw and paint facial features more accurately and 3 dimensionally. The i nstructor will analyze t he structure of the eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, chi n, and ears. This will be done in a two -part process. $200.00

Weiqing Yuan Learn the basic traditional technique of terracotta sculpture, i ncluding clay -work skills, modeling, and handling the process of the clay from wet to dry then baked in a kiln. You will learn to make a complete sculpture in terracotta. Sculpture in a variety of styles will be encouraged. Open to all levels. $300.00

NOV 6 – 10 Let's Think Printmaking

Processes in Abstract Painting

November 6 - 8 (3 days) 1 - 4 PM

October 31 - November 1 (2 days) 1 - 4 PM Cathy Choi This workshop will guide you through the process in Abstract Painting. Through exercises, the class together will create variati ons of topi c and subjects, usi ng acrylic, charcoal, and ink. Spontaneity and visual sensati on through repetition, color, will help the intuitive responses.

Kathy Caraccio This hands-on workshop will introduce basic techni ques and tools, encouraging students to develop individual projects in a variety of mediums. We will handle and discuss both Western and Asi an papers. I n the spirit of green printing, the workshop features envi ronmentally - friendly water miscible inks. You will like the pri ntmaking expression forever!

Large Prints

Painting the Figure in a Contemporary Way

October 31 - November 2 (3 days) 1 - 4 PM Taka Maruno Create your image on a plate larger than full -size paper (22” x 30”) that extends far beyond your imagination. Projects in differe nt mediums such as monotype, drypoi nt, linocut, collagraph, carborundum, and chi ne -colle', will improve your skill and nurture your passi on for printmaking. All levels are welcome. $300.00

November 6 - 7 (2 days) 1 - 4 PM Kristy Gordon Learn to create a personal painting while working from a live model. Studio practice and technical creation will be focused on a nude figure. Students will be encouraged to utilize composition, color, and personal expression in order to develop thei r own visual language in their work. Workshop will include demonstrati ons, discussions and indi vidual i nstruction at the easel. Open to all levels. $200.00
