Got Gay-tention Deficit Disorder? Is a Beyoncé-themed playground in the works for New York City and is Tyra Banks jealous? Read on… BY MATT BELL
1. Paging MISS TYRA SANCHEZ! If winning RuPaul’s Drag Race didn’t fulfill your dreams of connecting with the spirit of Beyoncé, perhaps sleeping on her new collection of bedding—from House of Deréon, Deréon and Arrow Home Fashions—will! 2. BETTY WHITE and her muffin tore up the SNL stage so well that a Facebook campaign has launched to have the white-haired sweetheart host the Oscars! 3. Second-class citizens, grab your bubbly! After 17 years of registering same-sex partnerships, New York City will now provide marriage-like ceremonies to, uh, celebrate these couples’ marriage-like commitments. Meanwhile, on The Bachelor... 4. When IMAN takes over! Move it, Kelly Rowland! Bravo’s enlisted fashion icon Iman to partner with Isaac Mizrahi for the second season of its lackluster Project Runway replacement, The Fashion Show. 5. The new David Barton Gym in Astor Place will be getting some stiff competition when a new Equinox opens in the old Tower Records on East 4th and Lafayette Streets. Choices, choices, choices! 6. New, Now, Nash! NIECY NASH didn’t win Dancing with the Stars, but she is co-hosting the NewNowNext Awards with CHEYENNE JACKSON on June 17! 7. Just in time for spring cleaning…Gilt Groupe, which has transformed online shopping for discount designer fashion, just launched a home edition offering up to 70% off of anything from furniture to tchotchkes. 8. Tyra Banks is penning a trilogy of fantasy books about modeling to be called Modelland, which will not be published on her forehead. 9. Starchitect Frank Gehry is designing his first playground, chock-full of his signature wavy modernist designs, to open near Battery Park sometime in 2012. 10. Most in need of a drink? LINDSAY LOHAN. She threw hers at supermodel Jessica Stam at 1Oak this week so we’re sure she needs a refill. Make it a Redheaded Slut: 1 oz Peach Schnapps, 1 oz Jägermeister and cranberry juice. 8 MAY 21, 2010
GETTING
PERSONAL WITH... <<< MONA MOUR
The first time we saw Mona Mour was at The F Word, pleasuring herself with a cucumber while lip-synching to Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love.” But the sassy starlet has been shocking-andawing all around town—alternate Sundays at Phoenix’s Sh*t Show, every other Tuesday at Metropolitan’s SRSLY LOL (where she had an infamous wig-grabbing row with an audience member) and all over P-Town, where Mour spends her summers. She started doing drag as a wee thing in her grandmother’s attic. “She had fierce clip-on earrings,” Mour tells us. “Then Mona would walk around the block in a gorgeous matching polyester skirt and blouse. Unfortunately, Mona’s milkshake drove all the boys from the yard!” We threatened to snatch Mona’s weave and got her to spill the shiznit.
The song on repeat in my iPod right now is...

WHAT’S
NOW SURE, SOCIAL NETWORKING HAS CHANGED the way we communicate, but for those who have trouble hearing or speaking in the first place, social networking offers them whole new world. This potential in communication inspired out web developer Michael Bamford, along with film producer Mich Lyon, to create Frisky Hands, a social networking website specifically aimed at the gay deaf community. “After meeting Martin Ritchie [of The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency fame] we came to understand the unique isolation many hearing-impaired members of the LGBTQ community face,” says Bamford, 35. “We went looking for a social networking site focused on the hearingimpaired LGBTQ community [but] none existed. [We were] determined that these friends deserved a whole lot better.” Using a new combination of online chat, messaging and live-video systems called “the wave,” FriskyHands.com (launching June 1) will allow hearing-impaired users to make new hearing-impaired/interpreter friends around the world. “We’ve surveyed a broad spectrum of the deaf/interpreter LGBTQ community [and] one of the first things everyone mentioned was the desire to have a private online space to make new gay hearing-impaired/ASL friends,” Bamford says about the need for FriskyHands.com. “Many felt sharing online space with their family was too public and other gay sites did not cater to the unique needs of the hearing impaired.” And the glowing response to Frisky Hands has already led them to start development on a second site, PositivelyFrisky.com, which will provide the HIV+ community a private space to interact without prejudice. “We have friends, lovers and business associates [who] belong to various groups within the broader gay community [who] have been marginalized to one degree or another,” Bamford says of his desire to create these “private spaces.” “We have been successful in building relationships with these individuals despite our differences and we wanted to help them find the joy in their lives that we have found in ours.” —Benjamin Solomon

More Karaoke! (See Page 36)
—JR Lee, karaoke performer
16 MAY 21, 2010
They are staring at Kathy Apollo, who is absolutely tearing into a karaoke rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Believe in You and Me.” As the heavyset young Puerto Rican hits her high register, the audience offers up hoots, applause and shouts of “Work, mama!” This is a crowd that knows talent. It’s a bad night to be a go-go boy. Apollo is just one of many gifted performers who walk through Splash’s door every week for Karaoke Idol. The Tuesday night event draws all kinds of people, but this isn’t your usual drunken after-work horror show karaoke. Real talent is lured here by the $400 prize that host and nightlife maven Ginger Snapt doles out each week. “I love anywhere where there’s amazing talent,” says Snapt, who took over emceeing duties from Shequida several months ago. “People think karaoke is boring and it’s long when you’re just hosting it. I just have a really good time with it and I admire the talent that’s up on the stage. It’s just phenomenal. Especially here,” she says. Yes, especially here. Is any city spilling over with more untapped talent than New York? Starry-eyed hopefuls come here from all over the world for their shot at the big lights, and many wet their feet at competitions held at gay bars and clubs throughout New York’s boroughs, where professionals mingle with diamonds-in-therough and work-a-day artists who are trying to break through. Some come because they love to perform. Some come for the camaraderie and free entertainment. Many come to network and maybe, just maybe, get discovered. If you’ve got a talent, there’s a venue for flaunting it here: every week bars across the city play host to karaoke competitions, drag queen throw-downs, hot-buns challenges, drinking contests, stud searches, gay comedy revues, dance tournaments, mud and Jell-o wrestling matches and other competitions too bizarre to be classified. The talent at each is as diverse as the city itself. Back at Splash, JR Lee takes the stage in a form-fitting green V-neck T-shirt. He flashes a devilish smile and flirts with Ginger Snapt a bit before launching into a dramatic rendition of Heart’s “Alone” in his soaring countertenor. Lee, 29, is an actor, singer, model and a veteran of the talent-show circuit. He’s been coming to Splash’s karaoke competition since it began four years ago, and has won it at least 10 times. “It’s not just to be seen,” he says. “There’s money and I can actually get paid for what I love to do.”

“It’s not just to be seen. There’s money and I can actually get paid for what I love to do.”
AT LEAST A DOZEN BUFF, shirtless men are milling around the bars and alcoves of the main room at Splash on a recent Tuesday evening. Their chiseled jaw lines, taut chests and sculpted arms beg for attention, but few are looking. All eyes—and ears—are riveted to a large woman on the stage.
Lee doesn’t win the first round. But he doesn’t sweat it. There’s another round coming up, so he saunters down off the stage and rejoins his table of friends, several of whom have also just performed. “If somebody wins more than a couple times, he’ll say, ‘Hey I’m going to split the money’ or, ‘I’ll split the money with you fifty-fifty,’” says Lee. “We do that sometimes. We all like to hone our craft and get paid for it and we all know this crowd isn’t as fair as it should be.” The roots of talent in New York’s gay scene run deep, and legendary careers have been forged in the beating heart of its gay venues. The Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse in the basement of the Ansonia Hotel, played host to a bevy of A-listers in its day such as the Pointer Sisters, Nell Carter, Barry Manilow and, of course, Bette Midler. The Divine Ms. M began singing there in the summer of 1970 and the popularity she gained from her lounge act propelled her into superstardom. In present-day New York, several blocks north of Splash, three avenues over and a world away, Chanell Divine Roberts is teasing her black and magenta hair high towards the fluorescent lights in a sweltering basement in Hell’s Kitchen. “Tonight I’m here to enter the talent show for the hundredmillionth time,” she says. “I’m hoping to win. I’ve won so many times, but tonight I’m hoping to land a gig or something like that.” Roberts is in the “green room” for therapy’s Cattle Call, a talent competition that host Peppermint likens to an open mic
Stars have been born on the stage at therapy. “We had one girl who was a regular on the show for a while,” says Peppermint. “She was winning and winning and winning, and then one day she didn’t win and she was quite disappointed. But then we had the pleasure of tuning in and seeing her on Oprah [Winfrey’s how] next week.” A muffled din slowly rises in volume as the patrons packed into the top floor of therapy get into their second and third drinks. The show is running late. “I produce talent, honey,” says Peppermint, before she trots up the back stairs to open the show. “Come to my show, get on Oprah. That’s how it works!” As Lea Michele and the rest of the Glee cast sing their high school hearts out on the televisions screens around Posh, a band is tuning up while Orlando Powers scurries around, handing out song lists and submission slips and introducing himself to the crowd. Powers, 41, who looks like a youthful, hot Bill Cosby, is hosting his first ever Rock Star Karaoke night at the popular watering hole. Here the vibe is more relaxed, drunker. There is no money on the table, but patrons get the unique pleasure of singing along to a live three-person band playing drums, electric guitar and electric bass. Dressed in a stylish and sporty red and white track suit, Powers busts out a rousing rendition of “Brick House” before calling a Molly Shannon look-alike up on the stage for a wayward version of Madonna’s “Holiday.” A bit later, Will comes sauntering up
TJ the DJ at Xes’ Sing Out Sister; Jaslene Gonzalez of America’s Next Top Model at Barracuda’s ’Cuda Karaoke; Alexis Arquette at Xes.
night. Though Roberts is an old pro on the talent scene, these days she only participates in Cattle Call, “’cause the other girls are kinda shady,” she says. With money on the table here as well, the talent comes out of the woodwork to strut their stuff. “Because this is the Theater District, it’s a good standard,” says the sparkly Peppermint of the talent at therapy. “Obviously with any competition that’s open there’s a mix, and some of them are fantastic and sometimes there [are] people that maybe need a little more work,” she says, making a face. “Sometimes there [are] people that are like, ‘You know what? I’m drunk and I haven’t paid my bills; I’m going to do whatever I have to do!’ It’s a mixed bag but I’ve been wowed more times than I’ve been disappointed.” Roberts, who specializes in lip-synching to Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle, is hoping to get discovered, but that’s not really why she’s been performing for so long. “I love entertainment,” she says in her deep baritone. “I’ve been doing this for over 20 years. This is what I love to do, and you have to have a love for what you do.”
sipping an overflowing cosmo, and gives a less-than-pitchperfect rendition of “Dancing Queen.” But that’s not quite the point. Tonight at Posh, no future Broadway stars emerge, but Powers’ star power shines through. “I would love to land on a hit TV show,” he says with a wide grin. Powers has kept busy working in the entertainment industry for years, modeling, acting and singing in groups such as The Fonic, an a cappella quintet that once opened for Wayne Brady. “I’ll always sing, so Broadway is in my sights,” he says, sipping a beer after the gig. “I’d like to have this band parlay this gig into other opportunities.” Back at Splash, Apollo, who had been channeling a younger Whitney Houston, stuck around for the third where she won with an outstanding Mariah Carey cover. She vowed to come back the next week, but didn’t show her face. “I always tell people, you can be going out for American Idol, you can do that,” says host Ginger Snapt. “And sometimes I think you need a push.” Perhaps Apollo finally got the push she needed. THERIGHTTRACK BY KEO NOZARI Agnes’ “Release Me” is another former dance chart topper, released ages ago, that may continue to have strong showing While Christina Aguilera’s “Not Myself Tonight” hasn’t faired well on the pop charts don’t count her out—her new album, Bionic,. e’re just a week from Memorial Day weekend and And don’t rule out these folks either: Janelle Monáe with the official kickoff off the summer season. So it’s only “Tightrope,” Taio Cruz as he drops his debut Rokstarr on June fitting that we make our list of early contenders for 1 with mega-hit “Break My Heart” and explosive new single the Song of the Summer. “Dynamite,” Kylie Minogue’s “All the Lovers,” child star Charice’s As mentioned last week, an obvious contender is Katy “Pyramid” and baby boy Justin Bieber’s “Baby” (and songs from Perry’s “California Gurls.” Released just days after we wrote his latest My World 2.0), Girlicious’ “Maniac,” B.o.B. with The our gurl-orious review, it already landed at the Number 1 slot Adventures of Bobby Ray, electro-pop queen Robyn’s “Dancing on iTunes’ Top Singles Charts. Miley Cyrus has a winner with “Can’t Be Tamed,” which will undoubtedly unleash untamable gyrating on the dance floor. Lady Gaga has her latest monster single, “Alejandro.” Usher With his new video for “I Am the DJ” on iTunes, already has a surprise acronym worthy hit with “OMG.” And songwriter/producer/DJ popular Ke$ha has pop revelers jonesing for “Love Is My Drug.” Kindbud keeps the beats Estelle, 2008 Song of the Summer champion with sexy at Big Gulp Tuesdays @ “American Boy,” has a definite club hit on her hands with The Cock, The F Word “Freak.” Could it freakishly be the winner? We’re predicting it’ll Fridays @ Club Rebel, and Vice Saturdays @ Vlada. at least reach Chelley’s favored status last summer with “Took the Night.” I Am the DJ Then there last year’s winning duo Kelly Rowland and Kindbud David Ohana Remix David Guetta (for “When Love Takes Over”) who may strike Earth Is the Place (Re-visited) gold again with Rowland’s “Commander” (which Guetta also Verna Francis produced). Guetta himself has his own remade single “Gettin’ Down to Earth Version Over You” featuring Fergie, Chris Willis and LMFAO. Killing Me Do The Right Thing The Wizard Brian Coxx Perhaps delivering the best “When Love Takes Over”Quentin Harris & Inaya Day feat. Sandy Spady Extended Mix esque dance anthem this year, however, is newcomer Alexis Love Me Devotion Daniel Bovie & Roy Rox Jordan with “Happiness.” Remixes bringing added happiness— Bingo Players feat. ARIES (MARCH 21–APRIL 20) Go with the flow and accept being influenced by others’ temporary memory loss and confusion. Don’t buy something you can’t afford just to make yourself feel better!
TAURUS (APRIL 21–MAY 21) Others who don’t understand your range of flavors may question your shift in fashion, décor and flings. It may confuse those used to a certain routine, but they’ll get over it!
NEXT
PARTIES
11pm/$10 general. (THU) Campus Thursdays by Alan Picus w/John Marto, Vito Fun and Steve Sidewalk (pop). 10pm; free before midnight with student ID/$5 without/$10 general admission.
WEST VILLAGE
GEMINI (MAY 22–JUNE 21) Don’t ruin a good thing by allowing ego to outshine your true personality. Instead talk from a deeper part of your soul and you’ll be surprised to see the soul connections that are made!
CANCER (JUNE 22–JULY 23) Doing your best to avoid rejection costs too much vital energy. Enjoy the who, what and where surrounding you! Sort out conflicts between thoughts and emotions bit by bit.
LEO (JULY 24–AUGUST 23) Blessings pop out of thin air; know the signs and grab opportunities that open to better tomorrows! Say the right thing to the right person at the right time and voila! Instant new life!
NEXT >>>
HOROSCOPE
WWW.NEXTMAGAZINE.COM
VIRGO (AUGUST 24–SEPTEMBER 23) Testing deeper levels of your conscience means taking steps out of your comfort zone. Trade ideas with others who contribute to society at large; you’ll like what you see!
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 24–OCTOBER 23) Get lovers or friends to try new things in their sex life, diet or wines they drink. Breathe new life into tired routines. Stimulate fresh conversation and invite new friends into the circle!
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24–NOVEMBER 22) Some deep conversation with a surprising individual may just help you change your perspective on people in general. As exciting as it is, don’t go too far and ruin a good thing!
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 23 –DECEMBER 22) Get the new job with the higher salary first; don’t spend the hypothetical first paycheck on yourself as a reward. Keep a checklist of what you’ll be able to do, but don’t spend it all at once!
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 23 –JANUARY 20) We all make mistakes; you just don’t like to admit to it! Meet others halfway and be pleasantly surprised if they do the same. Don’t let your ego get in the way of compromise!
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21–FEBRUARY 19) Expect to be the flavor of the week; brace for some confusing tug-of-war with your heart and dreams. It’s just the ebb and flow of those who can’t decide what they want as fast as you can!
PISCES (FEBRUARY 20–MARCH 20) Contribute your brilliant ideas to every conversation you’re involved in. Though there may be challenges from the usual suspects, proving you’re right comes with time and actions!

Everyday Rapture
EVERYDAY RAPTURE THE KID
BY DAVID HURST ollowing a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run at 2econd Stage last year, it’s easy to imagine that Sherie Rene Scott and her collaborators are thanking their lucky stars—in this case, Megan Mullally and the Roundabout, following the Roundabout’s decision to yank Lips Together, Teeth Apart after Mullally’s decision to leave the production over “artistic differences.” Truth be told, it’s the Roundabout who should be getting down on their knees to kiss Scott’s feet and thank her for saving their season—and their ass! For the show’s part, Everyday Rapture is wry, smart and funny send-up of autobiographical one-man shows that’s neither completely autobiographical nor one-man. Raised in Topeka, Kansas as a half-Mennonite who loved Jesus, Scott was also an aspiring performer who loved Judy Garland and Mr. Rogers even more, and she eventually moved to New York where she’s starred in such shows as The Last Five Years, Aida, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Little Mermaid. With Everyday Rapture, the gayest musical in New York next to La Cage aux Folles, Scott’s diva and gay icon status are now firmly secure, not that it was ever in doubt! Seemingly out of nowhere, the infant 2010–11 theater season took its first breath and screamed last week with the best musical of the year. Based on a book by sex advice columnist Dan Savage, The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Go Get Pregnant, the musical The Kid by Andy Monroe (music), Jack Lechner (lyrics) and Michael Zam (book) isn’t just the most important piece of gay theater written since William Finn’s Falsettos, it’s a landmark piece of theater all on its own. Ostensibly just a story about becoming parents, albeit from an adoptive, gay couple’s perspective, The Kid’s greatest triumph—aside from its tuneful score, hilarious book and the cast’s moving performance—is the universal story of love and acceptance told through a prism of gay “ordinariness” that elevates an innocent tale of adoption into one of supreme importance and immense entertainment. And if the heart of the show lies in the character of Savage, played with effervescent charm by the delightful Christopher Sieber, then the soul of the

show lies in the homeless couple Melissa & Bacchus, beautifully played by the understated Jeannine Frumess and Michael Wartella, who make the wrenching decision to give their son a chance in life by giving him up. Unbelievably, The Kid’s limited run at The New Group is set to close May 29. Not only should it extend, it should move to Broadway as soon as possible. N Everyday Rapture plays through July 11 at Roundabout (227 W 42nd St, 212-719-1300). The Kid plays through May 29 at The New Group @ Theatre Row (410 W 42nd St, 212-279-4200).
BOOK REVIEW SHE AIN’T HEAVY, SHE’S MY MOTHER: A MEMOIR BRYAN BATT HOT OFF THE PRESSES (and released just in time for Mother’s Day earlier this month) comes Bryan Batt’s deliciously funny “mom-oir,” She Ain’t Heavy, She’s My Mother. A successful Broadway performer for decades (appearing in everything from Cats and Forbidden Broadway to the 2004 revival of La Cage aux Folles where he understudied and went on as Albin/Zaza), Batt was best known for playing Darius in Paul Rudnick’s Jeffrey (both Off-Broadway and in the ’95 film version). Then fate shone on him in the guise of gay art director Salvatore Romano in AMC’s Mad Men. Now he’s one of the few out Hollywood stars who continues to work but and Batt hasn’t forgotten his New Orleans roots or the woman who made his success possible: his mother, Gayle Batt. By turns sassy and heartbreaking, Batt’s memoir about his relationship with his mother reflects on who he is as a gay man—and how he got that way—as much as it makes a statement on his mother’s intuitive understanding that her son was “different, in that theatrical way.” Set in the milieu of Creole and cocktails in 1970s New Orleans, She Ain’t Heavy… is a rich, hilarious portrait of unconditional love that has plenty of “conditions.” So pour a pitcher of highballs and sit back for the breeziest summer read in memory. REEL LOVE SOLITARY MAN
HOLY ROLLERS Time Investment: 89 min. Return on Investment: 50 min.
Time Investment: 90 min. Return on Investment: 80 min. n case you were wondering, Michael Douglas still has it. In spite of some readily apparent age lines, Douglas manages to draw us in right from the opening credits of Solitary Man (Anchor Bay), as he walks the streets of New York ogling women. He is just that good at playing the slimy business guy who tries to get away with it all: as Ben Kalmen, he is both Wall Street’s Gordon Gekko and Fatal Attraction’s Dan Gallagher (if he’d gotten away with the affair): Kalmen thinks he’s untouchable when it comes to both sex and business. But throughout much of the film he’s oblivious to the fact that he’s growing into the title character: a solitary, single man. Granted, his fall from grace is not as hard as we might like—the women in the film are a little too gentle with him (save for a deliciously catty turn by MaryLouise Parker channeling Nancy Botwin on a very bad day). Susan Sarandon, with whom Douglas shares a chemistry that oozes off the screen, is his super-affable ex-wife, while Jenna Fischer is the weak link as their bland daughter. The two women who turn out to be more than a match for Ben are the youngest in the film: the always-awesome Olivia Thirlby and newcomer Imogen Poots. Poots, who at first seems like a ScarJo knockoff, earns her presence opposite heavyweight Douglas, managing to make their tryst (yes, another coupling between a geezer and a hot young girl) carnal and believable. —Dan Heching

esse Eisenberg wants to be the new Woody Allen. Not in the creative—or sexually freaky—way, but as the ultimate Jewish nebbish bound by his neurosis, his stuttering wit and, possibly above all else, his tremendous quantity of films. With eight flicks released or coming soon, Eisenberg has suddenly become Hollywood’s new Everyman. It’s too bad that when he has a chance to stretch his acting chops, like in his newest film, Holy Rollers (First Independent Pictures), he can’t bend very far. You’d think it would be easy for him to playing Sam Gold, a disillusioned, sexually stunted Hasid living in 1998 Brooklyn. Sam’s more concerned with his family’s dwindling income than his
J
father’s wishes for him to become a rabbi, but that all changes when his swarthy manipulative neighbor, Yosef Zimmerman (Justin Bartha) convinces Sam to help him transport “medicine for rich people” to the States from Europe. Sam soon realizes this “medicine” is really ecstasy, but sees how the money could be a way to solve his problems. But drug movies and happy endings rarely mix. Rollers is based on actual events but as fascinatingly bizarre the tale is, freshman filmmaker Kevin Asch fails to inject the authenticity his film needs, both in its depictions of Hasidic life and late-’90s drug culture. Eisenberg may be the perfect Woody Allen, but that mumbling frustration lacks sufficient emotional weight to carry a film that attempts to take God on an ecstasy trip. —Benjamin Solomon

SPORTS QUICKIES Ow! My face! Big Apple Dodgeball’s teams Eagle, C-in2, and Duplex are all duking it out for first place. All have played strong and with one week of regular play to go, it’s anyone’s game. These ball-throwers have a tournament on May 24 where one “dodgy” team will be crowned champs of the season. And don’t miss the end-of-theseason party at therapy on May 27! Also, The Mariah Scareys are kicking ass and taking names in the straight dodgeball league for NYCSSC. They are vying for first place, and with the competition heating up, they are making quite the name for themselves.

hen Peter Tomasello was a kid, he was infatuated with Wonder Woman. After school, he would watch Lynda Carter “in her satin tights, fighting for your rights,” roping up thugs with her golden lasso—and all with fabulous hair and make-up! All of that excited Peter, but what he enjoyed the most was when she would stop bullets with her indestructible feminum bracelets (made from a metal found only on Paradise Island). Peter would go to the kitchen cupboard, break out the Reynold’s Wrap and fashion his own feminum (err, aluminum) bracelets to his limber wrists, and soon he’d be stopping whatever was hurled upon him by evil foes. Today, at 33, Tomasello isn’t stopping imaginary bullets; he’s blocking hockey pucks as the starting goaltender with the Wizards, a recreational ice hockey team in the New York City Gay Hockey Association. Tomasello has played 83 career games for the Wizards and has a goals-against aver-

age (GAA) of just 3.23, including 10 shutouts. Peter also has five assists, which shows his skill at sending the puck up to his defensemen, a rare quality in goaltenders. Tomasello does agree that there is a strong link between his childhood obsession with the super heroine and his affinity for goaltending. “I was infatuated with Lynda Carter, “ he says. “That’s probably why I’m a goalie. I used to love blocking bullets like Wonder Woman!” Vince Aita, captain of the Wizards says, “Pete gives our team a huge boost in confidence. Anytime you look back and see him in the net, you skate that much harder knowing the better goaltender in the game is on your team.” Wonder Woman had the same effect on the Justice League. He shoots! He scores! NYC Gay Hockey Association quickies: the Spiders and B-17 Bombers kicked off their Spring 2010 season this month with a shut-out win for the Bombers, but they lost this past Saturday in a crushing 71 loss to those pesky Scapegoats. Sadly, the Spiders were squashed with a very tough loss as well. Keep your eyes on the ice for Brian Harrington, star skater on the Wizards Hockey team—he’s about to reach his 500th game! Goaltender Peter Tomasello is one shut out away from a record of 50! The Wizards beat the Hornets in Game 1, 4-1. Finally, the NY Stonewallers Ice Hockey Team is hosting a Bachelor Auction on May 19 at 6pm at Splash with Peppermint! Win great prizes including Yankees tickets, tickets to a Broadway show, gym memberships, dinner at a hot New York restaurant, 50-50 cash prize raffle and more! Nailed it! Congratulations to the newly elected Executive Board of the Gotham Volleyball League: Seth Eichenholtz (Commissioner), Josh Christensen (Vice Commissioner), Lew Smith (Treasurer) and Craig Skelton (Secretary). Keep up the great work, guys! Why is a pool table green? The New York Gay Pool League is rackin’ ’em up for their Spring Nine-Ball Series Tournament. The games are on Mondays or Tuesdays each week at various locations. Cost: $30 and there is $1000 in cash prizes divided amongst the top four teams. I Want to Ride My Bicycle! Three members of gay cycling group, the Fast and Fabulous, made it all the way up to the Orchards, a 300-year-old farm store in Pomona, New York and a distance of 80 miles roundtrip on Sunday, May 9. It was a chilly and windy ride. On arriving at the farm store, the proprietor advised the riders:“Folks are coming in to buy a nice plant or flower for mom on Mother’s Day. Hell, I tell ’em, weather’s cool enough; buy her a cord of wood!” Dribble & Shoot! The New York City Gay Basketball League is in the final weeks of their spring season. ADivision: Bone Lick Park, led by Captain Jesse Gauf, remains undefeated and is looking to hold on to the No. 1 seed. BDivision: The Natural Burn Killahz led by Captain Burnie DuRant Jr. is the team to beat! In other basketball news, the NYCGBL just returned from the Coady Roundball Classic in Chicago, a national tournament in the Windy City. No trophies but more fun than any baller should have. BY PETER SHERWOOD uite unexpectedly, I had the most extraordinary cheesesteak when I stopped into Shorty’s one afternoon where I found myself with some time on my soon-to-be-greasy hands. I love their claim of “Authentic Philly Steaks & Sandwiches,” and when the opportunity presented itself I planked my ass on a barstool and ordered the Shorty’s Special. A mere nine clams gets you a pint of brew and a Shorty Cheesesteak. Stinkin’ good. Having asserted my position at the bar, I first slaked my thirst with a Stella Artois and basically ordered my Shorty with the works. It arrived as if sent down from the heavens above, wrapped in swaddling paper with a host of things stuffed inside the most delicious, crusty and warm Italian hoagie roll from Philly’s own Le Bus Bakery, which I’d requested with the conviction of a glutton: grilled onions (served “witout” unless you ask), Wiz (their somewhat more rarefied version of Cheese Whiz that tastes like a sneaky version of McDonald’s special sauce), shredded lettuce, sliced tomato and a side of mayonnaise. It was beyond. The meat itself was gorgeous perfection and all conspired to form a rare moment when I felt, at least sitting at the bar at Shorty’s, that everything was right with the world. On the next trip back, my fella got the cheesesteak deal with a Bud Light Lime but topped his meaty meal with provolone and a side of juicy red marinara sauce. We also got an order of Yuengling Rings ($6), sliced onions dipped in Yuengling beer batter. Unfortunately, they were overly fried and not as good as we had assumed they’d be—they were decent enough though, as we noted the resonance of herbs in the batter and continued to dip the fairer share of the rings in ketchup and more of the marinara sauce. Shorty’s also offers nightly specials and over the weekends boozy bargains are on offer like Select Pitchers ($12) and Bloody Marys ($5). Wiz Sliders ($6) and Breakfast Sandwiches ($7) are served up, too. But what’s really happening here: cheesesteaks and beer. Mmm… N 58 MAY 21, 2010

ctor, model and tabloid golden boy Nick Adams is best known for his role as Larry opposite Mario Lopez in the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line. Adams currently plays one of the Cagelles in the Tonynominated revival of La Cage aux Folles and his list of Broadway credits also includes the Mary Sunshine standby in Chicago, the original Broadway cast of The Pirate Queen and Liver Lips Louie in the revival of Guys and Dolls. The New York Post also hailed him as having the best biceps on Broadway. Adams made his film debut earlier this year in An Englishman in New York starring John Hurt. So for a Gay Takeaway, what does Nick pick? “My number-one spot is hands down the smoothie bar at Gold’s Gym (250 W 54th St, 212-307-7760). I always grab a healthy meal replacement shake. Their options range from weight-gaining deliciousness to energizing potions. I constantly graze to keep size on and my energy up, so this quick fix is perfect before I hit rehearsal or the stage. WESTCOASTPLAYAZ (Pitbull/Thugporn Platinum, 1-877-THUGPORN, ThugMart.com) est Coast Playaz isn’t a documentary about Spanish beaches. It’s 109 interracial minutes of black and Latin thugs hittin’ it L.A. style.

ROD: Dark-on-light action with some tattoos thrown in? I love it! I’ve said that so often, I must sound like a broken record. MANUEL: For our younger readers, “records,” you see, were these big vinyl disc things— never mind. ROD: When I see a lean, white cutie like Orion Cross chowing down on a big black cock like Justin Blade’s, all I can think is “Wait’ll he fucks you!” I love that mix of anticipation and fear. MANUEL: This scene starts as a 4-5-9 (burglary) in progress. Blade is nervous the owners will

ROD: I’m still getting used to watching porn on my home computer. (It’s much more fun at work—just kidding, boss!) But when Titan gave us online access to check out Thrust, who was I to say no? MANUEL: A porn feature with three scenes sounds meager until you realize each one is 40 minutes long and everyone comes twice. ROD: The site lets you choose in advance which guys you want to concentrate on. My choice? François Sagat, Dakota Rivers, and especially Christopher Saint and Tristan Jaxx. MANUEL: Jimmy Fallon look-alike Viktor Jones heads up to the woods with Sagat during a sunshower to wet their dicks in the mist. This scene is shot beautifully, and Sagat (bottoming) is as sexy as ever. The fact that he and Jones have

Max Sanchez isn’t breaking any L.A. laws. But this Mexican-American is discovered at the top of Scene 3 looking tattooed, mohawked, and mopping a floor—enough to get him arrested in Arizona. ROD: Billy Long was so fucking hot in the final scene it made me stop wondering why Dominik Ryder’s hair was so black. Was he sporting a bad dye job or a bad wig? Either way, this pair had me sporting wood. MANUEL: To me, Ryder was a porn version of Rod Blagojevich while tall, keen-featured Long—the sexiest and best-hung in an average cast of nine—resembled Darryl Strawberry. It was only fitting that their fuck-scene was set in a prison cell. ROD:

virtually identical dicks only adds to the pleasure. ROD: Online video isn’t as much fun as my big screen at home, but Titans like Dakota Rivers are so big, I’d even enjoy them on an iPhone. His cubicle three-way with Ethan Wolfe and Leo Alarcon was a workplace fuckfest. MANUEL: Speaking of streaming video, Titan Exclusive Christopher Saint turns into patron saint of watersports, baptizing himself with a stream of piss before Tristan Jaxx brings out his own big gun and canonizes Saint. Mother Teresa would be jealous. ROD:
