SEPTEMBER 21, 2016 PASS THE BALL The UK’s Premier League is still waiting for its first out player, but a new film starring none other than Russell Tovey hopes to push the process along. The Pass has already screened at a few festivals, and stars Tovey as an upcoming soccer star who makes a pass at a teammate (Arinzé Kene) the night before a major match — and then doesn’t make a pass of the other sort during the game itself. The film then revisits him a couple of times during his career as he tries to deal with his success and his sexuality. Go to nextmagazine.com to watch the first look trailer. YAS, QUEEN! RuPaul just made herstory, winning his first ever Emmy, for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition. The drag superstar picked up the award at last night’s Creative Arts Emmys ceremony, the second of two shows this weekend. The win was a surprise to a lot of people, but apparently to no one more than Ru himself, who’s always said he never made the show for mainstream recognition. “I haven’t 12 SEPTEMBER 21, 2016

landed yet,” he told Yahoo! backstage. “I can’t believe it. This is really so crazy. I really did not expect this… I’m still not sure if I won! I don’t know if I’m dreaming or not, because I’ve never felt like this before — maybe in a drug flashback or something.” WE REMEMBER The queer community is mourning the lose of trans activist and actress Alexis Arquette who passed away last week surrounded by family and friends. Her sister, Patricia Arquette, beautifully wrote, “She fiercely lived her reality in a world where it is dangerous to be a trans person — a world largely unready to accept differences among human beings, and where there is still the ugliness of violence and hostility towards people that we may not understand,” the statement continued. “We are comforted by the fact that Alexis came into our family and was our brother and then our sister, and that she gave us so much love. We will love you always, Alexis. We know we were the lucky ones.”
JOANNE Joanne The Scammer may have a whole new reason to scam this fall. Lady Gaga announced that her highly anticipated new album would be out on October 21. The name? Joanne. Her middle name, Joanne is also the name of her father's late sister who passed away from Lupus three months shy of her 20th birthday. “[Joanne] is the woman of my past,” she said on Apple Radio's Beats. Gaga also hinted that the album art will be out soon. CAROL'S QUEENS Last Thursday, the hilarious Marti Gould Cummings, Mimi Imfurst, and Sherry Vine went behind the bar at Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens, Live in some amazing Carol Burnett looks. Burnett was Cohen' special guest for the night, plugging her shows over the weekend at the Beacon Theater. Watch the clip on nextmagazine.com. Go to NextMagazine.com to find out more weekly gossip.

Bushwig
GETS BIGGER, BETTER, AND BOLDER WITH AGE BY ALEX KACALA
Bigger and better was the theme at this year’s Bushwig.
B
ushwig returned for the fifth year and ventured into uncharted territory – Queens. With Brooklyn’s rising rent prices partially to blame, the annual drag festival was held at the Knockdown Center. The 5000-person capacity previously hosted shows by big-name-artists like M.I.A., Beach House, and Deadmau5. “Right now we are in a drag explosion. Bushwig is part of this revolution; the new wave of drag and the next generation of queens. The latest performers in New York are struggling as the city is getting gentrified faster than ever. But the creativity and the freaks aren’t going anywhere--we are dealing with the fact that this city is constantly evolving and what really matters is the art will always be here. We are beyond excited and grateful to be at the Knockdown Center as we celebrate our fifth year,” said Horrorchata, co-founder of Bushwig. This year was Ultra Violet’s third Bushwig, second on stage. “I am looking forward to seeing queens that I know or have met in the past who I don’t get to see a lot. It’s nice to have a place where everyone can come together and share their craft.” Momo Shade and Kandy Muse dished with us right before they took to the stage to host. This was Shade’s fifth year at Bushwig, having been there at the very beginning. When asked how it has evolved, she replied, “The venue and just the quality of the whole thing. I feel like now it is bigger and better and more modern. Before it was little bit more old school. 18 SEPTEMBER 21, 2016

Wooden stage. You would get your fucking high caught in the fucking wood. (Laughs) Everything has gone up.” Drag Race’s Thorgy Thor was another queen commenting on the upgrade of the venue. “The first year I went to it it was literally a mud pit and I lost my shoes and I wore something I should not have worn. Last year, it was the same deal, too. It was outside and it started raining. And I was like, ‘Oh, girl!’ And I wore floor length feathers. Big mistake. This year I am wearing no tights with hairy legs and I get here and it’s this beautiful indoor gorgeous venue.” Even though she was there, she wasn’t performing per se. “I am hosting for one hour. Introducing all my best friends. I just knew there would be all this pressure to do this big fucking fiasco. Shave my dreads off. Play an orchestra. And I was like I don’t have time to prepare something I would be proud of. So why don’t I just show up, be fierce, and introduce all my best friends in Brooklyn and that is exactly what I am doing tonight. I am going to give flavor, attitude, and have a fucking good time.” Drag artists weren’t the only artists there. A room behind the stage was full of makers selling their wares. One of them was Harlem’s Tyler Wallach. “This is my fourth year coming to Bushwig but they are finally letting vendors come and sell their work. It’s wonderful.” “There is a wonderful group of queer people in the community that are makers and we get to represent ourselves
this year. I have been painting for four years and making clothing for about three.” Wallach is inspired by influences like Keith Haring, Patricia Fields, BCALLA, and Ben Copperwheat to name a few. But he also sources inspiration from the queens around him. “I am inspired by all of the queens and their homemade looks. There is nothing better than something that starts homemade and gets bigger. I love all of the color, the glitters nine queens out of ten have sequins on and you can never go wrong with that." Outside, empanadas and vegan tacos were being devoured by some while free acupuncture and video installations were enjoyed by others. Trade like Boy Radio took over the dance floor, while more trade waited in the long lines for beer or booze. Queens like Michael Musto and Violet Chachki sat in the shade while possibly throwing some shade, gossiping and kibitzing over the latest chatter. The elements were so fantastic it was hard to decide between the fabulous performances inside or the fabulous weather out to enjoy. Some were glued to the stage the entire time like Drag Coven’s Courtney Conquers, who drove eight hours from Toronto to be front row filming for her YouTube channel with fellow bio-queen Jamie Lynn Lambert. “It is a little bit of the New York drag we are used to whenever we visit because the New York queens obviously always have hilarious mixes and are very theatrical. But then there is like an underground, ‘I am going to paint all over myself,’ and use all the props or no props depending on how I feel. Like a dirty vibe that is the greatest thing ever. We have been so excited about this weekend because we don’t really get that in Toronto.” Conquers and Lambert travel far and wide for drag, as they are devoted stans of the genre. So they know what they are talking about. “A lot of the other places we visit, it’s either very gender bendy or pageanty and here it is a mixture of everything mashed into one bucket and stirred around.” One of the stirrers of the bucket is Merrie Cherry, who has cultivated a strong nightlife community in Brooklyn since she started performing in New York five years ago.
“The first Bushwig was DIY. The stage floor was rickety. We were able to drink for free. There are a lot more rules and regulations but what comes with that is more attendance. Bushwig has become more of a real professional production. You know? Slowly but surely. I am excited to see it ten years from now. It is still growing. I would love to see what would happen in ten years.” She gets distracted for a moment, looking over my shoulder and not paying attention to our conversation “Sorry! Someone got close to my drink and I got nervous. So it hasn’t changed that much! (Laughs) You still gotta watch your drink!” I brought up the parallels between Wigstock and Bushwig, as some have compared the two drag festivals and said the latter has carried on the former’s torch. “That is why Lady Bunny is such an important part of this and will be a part of it every year we do it. I would hope so at least. It’s a really huge thing having her involved with it because it connects the two worlds. They are people here who definitely went to Wigstock but since Wigstock stopped, there was a void. Those people who may have felt disconnected from what is happening in the community and what is happening in the bars that we go to now. At least now they have Bushwig and a few other events that they feel comfortable to go to and do their thing.” Shade and Muse, both Latin, process Bushwig in a post-Pulse existence. “I think it is all about being supportive of one another. Now everyone has a censor. Now it’s really about respecting other people’s choices and really loving each other,” Muse reflects. “It’s about time. Everyone has consideration for each other. I am a big believer that whatever you throw in this universe you will get back. I feel like we need to treat each other with respect and love,” Shade adds. “It’s great to see all these queens and artists come together in one place and just be. Just live their fucking live. Literally anybody can come to Bushwig and dress up however the fuck they feel and not get judged. People are going to accept you with open arms.” Here is to ten more years of Bushwig, baby. WORLD OF WONDER AND MAKE BELIEVE BY ALEXANDER KACALA
We ventured to Bushwick to step into the wondrous world of fashion designer BCALLA with his muse model Maya Monés. This is what we discovered.
24 SEPTEMBER 21, 2016
Whether it is with his smile or with his energetic and ostentatious designs, Callahan has established himself as a fixture in New York's queer culture. In a world where homogeneous sensibilities easily become the norm, he and his brand, BCALLA, are constantly attempting to dismantle that institution. His designs have been worn by some big names and graced some bigger stages, but it's our local community that supports him. That doesn't come with its obstacles however.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMES BECKERMAN
Bradley Callahan is one of these people who leaves a room a little better than how he found it.
"The nightlife community is really what has made my brand and has supported me," he told me surrounded by thousands of brown boxes in the middle of his studio, a shared warehouse space in the heart of industrial Bushwick. "It is amazing. I love my brothers and sisters. But it can be a little detrimental for people taking you seriously because you are having so much fun. Fashion doesn't like to see that. For an industry that moves so fast, it moves super slow. It takes forever - it takes until somebody sees that something is making money for them to get behind it usually. So if you are far ahead they don't care essentially." How far ahead is he? Before Vivienne Westwood featured Colby Keller, he was in a porn presentation of BCALLA's FW15 collection. Before drag was a household name, BCALLA was dressing queens for gigs at the queer clubs in Brooklyn. Before trans modeling agencies existed, BCALLA was casting trans models in shows and campaigns. That is how far he is. Fun is exactly what his showing was during a special event at Stage 48 last week. Instead of a runway, BCALLA opted for a blown up wrestler's ring. His models? Drag queens and local nightlife celebrities of course. Will Sheridan was the emcee, with Drag Race winner Violet Chachki outfitted in a referees's ensemble hanging high above the crowd from a Lyra. One word fits it all: fun. His latest collection, a collaboration with Print All Over Me, started with Callahan's comic book drawings. The protagonists are three female super heroes named X, Y, and Z. "This collection was inspired by my brother's comic book collection which he gifted me a couple years ago. It totally inspired my whole fashion career. Specifically female fronted comic books from the 90's like Lady Death, Dawn, and WitchBlade." "After my brother grew out of comic books, I continued on with anime, especially female fronted anime. That was a big source of inspiration for me because of the fashion element and the general story line of strong woman in good clothes kicking ass. Sounds good to me." Strong women occupy BCALLA's narrative, having dressed Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, and Azealia Banks. Banks is somebody he is still working with on and off, regardless of the drama overwhelming her social media self. "I don't follow that. The best thing about Azealia is she pays, she pays on time, and she doesn't argue. She respects the people that she works with, you know? Which is hard to find in this industry, especially in this industry when people think of you as so disposable. Or there are ten more designers down the road. When you get to bigger stars like Gagas and Mileys or things like that, literally people are throwing clothes

for Gypsy Sport, and fashion week shows for Chromat. She was also recently featured in Paper Mag, whose feature article's headline read, "NYC Nightlife Staple Maya Monés On Transitioning And Keeping Your Queer Family Close." "I always wanted to become a model but it just never felt like it was a possibility because I never felt comfortable with myself growing up until I started transitioning. I am still in the process of learning how to be comfortable with myself and loving myself a lot. I just wanted to spread that and try and help other trans people who are coming into themselves. Or gender non-conforming people. People of all walks of life who need a boost. That is what I do it for." She, too, cites another powerful woman as her inspiration, Naomi Campbell. "We lost a lot of life behind models and personality and an appreciation for models as people. We went from the super model age of things into this new era where it is really white washed and you didn't really have to have a personality. You just have to be a stick that had white skin to pass. Naomi brought so much more to it. She was so unapologetic about it and I love that." Monés is unapologetic too, especially when it comes to her quest of breaking down barriers and exposing transphobia in the fashion industry. "I think [transphobia] comes from the idea that trans is a trend and not seeing trans people as
at them. It's insane. Gaga changes clothes like three times a day when she is on a press tour. They are pulling pieces from senior collections all around the world." "It's different when you work with someone like Azealia who believed in me - believes in me. She doesn't argue with budget, she lets me do my own thing and that is a wonderful, wonderful thing in this industry." But the largest female inspiration in his life is his mother. "My Mom is a super strong woman. She was the bred winner for our family. I love a strong woman. They are very inspirational." One of the other strong women who inspires Callahan on the daily is model Maya Monés. After traveling around for most of her childhood, Monés settled down here almost two years ago. "New York feels like home." "I live in the Bushwick-Ridgewod border. I like that border specificity because it hasn't gotten gentrified. It definitely has but not to the extent that Bushwick and Williamsburg have. It feels more like home to me to be surrounded by people who are like me. It feels right." Like Callahan, Monés also occupies both worlds of fashion and nightlife, with various hosting gigs around the city, campaigns 26 SEPTEMBER 21, 2016
people or treating trans people as people. Specifically trans people of color. I have had to deal with all kinds of dis-respect from like very simple things like mis-gendering or trans misogyny or classicism and racism. It's really, really, really, really real and nobody wants to talk about it. They know it's there and they think we are talking about it when nobody is really saying shit. And everybody needs to." "I went to a shoot once where they didn't have clothes for me but they had clothes for the white models sitting next to me. That is just reality. We have to deal with it. It is kind of a bitch but like I said I am not doing it for myself. It hurts in the moment but it is something we just have to push through to get where we want to get to." MonĂŠs knows exactly where she wants to get to, and this tenacity has broken down barriers and the high walls built in an industry easily overwhelming to the meek or mild. When she saw Callahan at a friend's BBQ, she knew his work well from Instagram and walked straight up to him and said, "I just moved here. I am trying to be a model and I would love to model with you." His response? "Done." "Who is going to do it for me if I don't go up to him?" she asks. "Who is going to do it? Nobody is going to do it for a black trans girl." "She has a customized niche career that there is no blue print for," Callahan explains. "Nobody can apply that blue print to Maya like they can with a lot of others girls. That is a good thing because she will end up doing something more special and more rewarding in the end." What about the blue print in fashion? How is this applied to BCALLA and how does Callahan fight against it - if at all? "The main source of fashion is to sell as many units as you can which is the antithesis of what I do. You know? A lot of factories in Midtown wont even work with you if you don't have something like a 200 unit minimum which means you are moving at least 200 shirts which really isnt that many but it doesn't interest me at all. I don't like going into a store and seeing multiples on a rack. It makes me freak out a little. I like finding things and having them be your treasures and have them feel a little personalized." "Be your own thing. I grew up thrifting so that has set my mentality towards clothing. Where you know if you thrift something you are not going to walk into the party that night and be wearing something that someone else is wearing." Back to nightlife, we come full circle with this narrative and space that BCALLA thrives in. Callahan's queerness lives out loud, and that is something instilled in him at a young age by his stay at home artist father who took care of the kids and home. "When I was getting picked on or beat up as a kid for being effeminate or whatever,
my Dad would show me Andy Warhol, Tennessee Williams, and Oscar Wilde and that is what gave me the strength to be who I am and to accept who I am. He really inspired my creative outlet to make something of myself." But have they seen his porn? "My parents have always fully supported me. Even after the porno. They said they watched it all the way through." "Just once. Just to be supportive." SEPTEMBER 21, 2016 27

6 tips on how to travel well-equipped for fun and adventure BY MIKEY ROX
SEPTEMBER 21, 2016 29

f there’s one aspect of traveling that most people dread, it’s packing. Set off too light and you run the risk of having to spring for extras while on vacay. Stuff your suitcase to the gills and you’ll need to make a date with a chiropractor when you get home—not to mention the potential baggage overcharges you may incur in the interim. To avoid both these scenarios, lifestyle expert Bob Caputo details his packing best practices for your next easy-breezy getaway.
4
1
Make a list
Ease up on the toiletries
of what to pack a few days in advance
To save space in your luggage—and to prevent a headache at airport security— leave more common toiletries at home. Most hotels provide everything you need to stay fresh and clean, and these items are included in the price you’ve already paid.
Avoid throwing half your closet into your bags in a last-minute frenzy. Give yourself at least 24 hours lead-time to start prepping your belongings so the essentials are covered and nothing is left behind. “Make a master list of the items you normally bring on trips—clothes, toiletries, computer and phone charger, medicines, workout gear and sunglasses,” Caputo suggests. “Print the list out and check off the items as you pack them.”
Ditch the books and read from your devices

Plan your outfits
Instead of bringing paperback books to read, download electronic versions to your tablet or notebook. And download movies to watch when transportation boredom sets in. To save even more space, you could download them onto your phone.

When traveling, choose items wisely—and sparingly—so they can be mixed, matched and get more individual mileage. “You might want to bring all outfits that are black, for example; by using that black jacket with several outfits, you can pack less and still look great,” says Caputo. “Select accessories that also can be used with several outfits. Chances are nobody is going to see you every day and judge you if you repeat outfits.”
Make photocopies of important documents
You’ll never be stranded if you practice common sense. “Bring a photocopy of your driver’s license, passport and medical insurance cards in your carry-on,” Caputo advises. “Also, keep pictures of the documents on your phone. This way, if you lose them or if you’re robbed, you’ll still have your vital info.”

Workout For The Gay-On-The-Go Being too busy should never been an excuse to not get into the gym. BY DAN WELDEN
32 SEPTEMBER 21, 2016
FITNESS
F
all is here and many of us are back to our non-stop chaotic routine of working 90 hours, binge eating takeout when we should actually be resting, and chugging caffeine to continue our hectic work schedule with minimal sleep. So when are we supposed to squeeze in any form of fitness with this mundane sleep deprived schedule? Here’s a routine that might work for you. No, it wont get you massive or jacked but it will help keep you stay in-shape and keep active when your fighting a #GayOnTheGo type of daily routine.
DAY 2 - Upper Body • 5 Minutes of stretching/warm-up • 5 minutes on the Elliptical at Level 8 or higher
You’ll need to push your limits with this routine every time. If it seems too easy, kick up the weights, repetition, or intensity in order to make it more challenging. Feel free to contact me if you want recommendations on additional modifications you can make to further intensify this workout. My contact info listed below. As always, speak with your physician to insure you are physically capable of starting any workout routine.
Superset 2 • Machine or Cable Chest Fly - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • Rear Deltoid Fly - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • Reverse Grip Barbell Curl - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • Side Dumbbell Raise - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • 5 minutes on the Elliptical at Level 8 or higher • 5 minutes of stretching/cool down
GAY-ON-THE-GO 45 Minute Circuit Workout DAY 1 - Lower Body • 5 Minutes of stretching/warm-up • Power Walk on Treadmill at Speed 4 or Higher Superset 1 • Seated Leg Press - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • Calf Raise on Leg Press Machine - Complete 3 sets of 20 reps • Power Walk on Treadmill at Speed 4 or Higher Superset 2 • Leg Extension - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • Seated Leg Curl - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • Power Walk on Treadmill at Speed 4 or Higher • 5 minutes of stretching/cool down
Superset 1 • Chest Press or Bench Press - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • Dumbbell Bicep Curl - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • Dumbbell Hammer Curl - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • Front Dumbbell Raise - Complete 3 sets of 15 reps • 5 minutes on the Elliptical at Level 8 or higher
Additional note. The set repetition is a goal to hit. If you can easily hit the set repetition number with the correct form, you are not pushing yourself. Ideally, you should fall a few reps short, have to take a couple second pause, and bang out the rest. I also highly encourage you to attempt to make time to take at least one circuit class a week. This will help you better understand the level of intensity you should strive for. Many gyms have them available with your gym membership. A great example is Jillian Michaels BODYSHRED offered to CRUNCH members. Its a 30 minute full body circuit. If you have additional questions or suggestions for future articles, feel free to message me on Instagram @Danwelden or contact me through my website Danstotalfitness.com.
