GOT GAY-TENTION DEFICIT DISORDER?

From the hot topics to the hot messes, here is what you may have missed last week. COLTON CRUSH Actor Colton Haynes has opened up about his past in an emotional new interview with Out, discussing his chronic anxiety, his father’s suicide, and how he felt about Noah Galvin slamming his coming out interview. Our favorite part was finding out he is very single. He says his ideal man is a combo of his three celebrity crushes (John Cena, Idris Elba, and Ryan Reynolds), but be warned, he doesn’t let many guys get close: “I haven’t had sex in—I couldn’t tell you how long.” BYE, BYE DUBAI YouTube celebrity Gigi Gorgeous was detained last week in Dubai because she is transgender. 24-year-old Gorgeous was detained for five hours after landing in the country where the “imitation of women by men” is illegal.

JUST DO IT Nike continues to be a leader in diversity and inclusion when it comes to the LGBT community - including our community in the narrative of their brand in a space where so much exclusion has taken place. “Chris Mosier is Nike’s first transgender athlete and is featured in “Unlimited Courage,” the latest installment in Nike’s “Unlimited” campaign. Mosier is the first openly trans athlete to earn a spot on a U.S. men’s national team. How incredible is that?

TRANSPARENT There’s just over a month to go until Transparent is back on our screens, and Amazon has finally released the first full trailer for the show’s third season to get us excited. And it looks like change is afoot for the Pfeffermans. Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) is finally ready to stop being ‘Moppa’ and start being ‘Mom’, while she’s also considering gender confirmation surgery, and the voice over tells us that when one member of a family transitions, they all do.

MANIC MODEL Remember when that male model stripped naked in Times Square in late June? Well, the model’s name is Krit McClean, and he just spoke to The New York Post’s Melkorka Licea - coming clean about the incident and his mental illness He told them, “After meeting my current therapist, Dr. Samoon Ahmad, I began to understand and accept my diagnosis — I was bipolar, and my nude jaunt was part of a manic episode.”

A-LIST Barbra Streisand entertained an A-List crowd at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center last week which included Sarah Jessica Parker, Andy Cohen, Gayle King, music mogul Clive Davis, Ralph Lauren, and Rosie O’Donnell. Go to NextMagazine.com to find out more weekly gossip.

MERYL

WHAT’SNEXT I AM NOT SURE WHY WE ARE IN THE SUPERHERO MOMENT. MAYBE BECAUSE WE NEED ONE.

W

hen Meryl Streep looks at you and tells you she is kidding – it’s over. I don’t know what is over but it’s done. It’s like, “Did Meryl Streep, queen of everything, just tell me she is joking?” She did. I didn’t get the joke. But now I do. Her humor is so effortless I missed it! And she needed to give me a disclaimer. Let me rewind.

myself, “I don’t know! Is he? It’s kind of hinted to in that one scene. There is something!”

Streep sat on a panel with fellow actors Hugh Grant (Elizabeth Hurley’s ex-husband) and Simon Helberg (Big Bang Theory) to promote the opening of Stephen Frears’ adorable new film Florence Foster Jenkins, opening nationwide August 12.

She heard the panic in my voice and then with affection and humor she yelped, “I’m kidding!”

Set in 1940s New York, Florence Foster Jenkins is the true story of the legendary heiress and socialite (Streep) who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great singer. The voice she heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was hilariously awful. St. Clair Bayfield (Grant), an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. Helberg plays her gawkish and timid pianist Cosme McMoon, who during one party scene, is hinted to be gay. I was curious about this, so when I was called upon by the moderator, I decided to bring it up. The first few questions were all about “the process,” while the rest were ego stroking the queen who sat before us and demeaning the peasants who sat beside her. But I was interested in the gay shit. I first asked Streep and Grant a question about pre-conceived notions, similar to what happened to her and Cher (again, gay shit) when they first worked together during Silkwood. But that question got overlooked by the fervor my second question caused in the tiny Ritz Carlton conference room we sat in.

The microphone had already been taken away from me, but that didn’t stop me from speaking up. I never really needed a microphone to begin with.

Streep’s tone was like that of the crunchy granola, academic mother, making jokes in the kitchen before she heads to her pottery class at the Community Arts Center or her monthly four hour shift at the Co-Op. About to oven roast some brussel sprouts with vegan bacon, she shows she can get down with the kids and make jokes about things like queerness and gayness. Similar to Amy Poehler in Mean Girls, but instead of wearing a Juicy Couture sweat suit she is wearing a kimono inspired blousey top with sandals and socks. I really didn’t know it was possible to love her more but here I was – rosy cheeked and sweating and thinking, “I know this woman.” Now to Simon’s answer that he finally got to after the room calmed down: “It’s insinuated. It’s dealt with beautifully because it is not really talked about or hit on the head and it is just accepted and lovely. Probably at that time it wasn’t accepted but in these circles it was. It’s just interesting to look at him at that moment thinking – finding this affection for bodybuilding and these muscle men in the magazines he looked at. He probably didn’t know why he liked looking at these guys lifting weights so he thought I must like weight lifting. It’s an innocent moment before he realized what he was.” That was good enough for me.

Simon, can you tell us about Cosme’s gayness? The room burst with laughter, and after it died down, Meryl blurted out, “Cosme is gay?” The room laughed more. Worried I made a mistake outing the non-fictional character, I quickly retorted trying to explain

I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR MERYL TALK ABOUT BEING A WOMAN WORKING IN HOLLYWOOD TODAY. ARE THERE ENOUGH ROLES FOR WOMEN OVER 40 OR 50 YEARS OLD? WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS?

Of all of Streep’s quotes from the conference, her most amazing answer was in response to a rather generic question from one reporter, “I would like to hear Meryl talk about being a woman working in Hollywood today. Are there enough roles for women over 40 or 50 years old? What are your thoughts on this?” “There are not probably enough but what I think is under siege in movies are stories about human beings... of all shapes and sizes and races and creeds. Yeah. I am not sure why we are in the superhero moment. Maybe because we need one.” Florence Foster Jenkins opens August 12. N AUGUST 17, 2016 15

BRIEF ENCOUNTER

SHAKINA NAYFACK

THE ‘TRANS TRUTHER’ FROM ‘DIFFICULT PEOPLE’ BY JOHN WALKER

We chatted with the Hulu star about casting trans actors, North Carolina’s bathroom bill, and, yes, whether jet fuel can melt steel beams.

T

he TV Tropes wiki might be packed full of television’s most overused clichés and storytelling devices, but nowhere throughout its thousands upon thousands of web pages will you find an entry for “trans truther.” That’s because there has only been one such character in the history of TV, and she’s played by New York’s own Shakina Nayfack. Nayfack, a performer and actress who debuted her one woman rock musical, Manifest Pussy, at Joe’s Pub last June, recently joined the cast of Hulu’s Difficult People. She plays Lola, a selfdescribed “trans truther” who’s as eager to call out transphobic comments as she is to tell anyone within earshot that “Bush did 9/11.” I recently had the chance to speak with Shakina over the phone. Over the course of our conversation, she touched on a number of important conversations like casting trans actors in trans roles, playing an “imperfect” trans character (i.e., a narcissistic asshole who happens to be trans), taki ng Manifest Pussy on the road in protest of North Carolina’s anti LGBT legislation, and, yes, whether or not jet fuel can melt steel beams. 16 AUGUST 17, 2016

Have you watched the latest episode of Difficult People yet? Oh, of course! I stayed up till midnight last night to watch it as soon as I could. I know some actors feel weird about watching themselves on screen. Do you feel that way? No, I don’t have that dissonance. It’s exciting! I mean, acting on TV is so new to me, but it’s awesome. How did you land the part of Lola? Did Julie Klausner reach out to you, or…? I auditioned just like everybody else. There was a casting call that was distributed rather discreetly, looking for a transgender actress to not only play the role but also consult with them on the character. The one thing they knew was that they wanted this character to be a “trans truther,” so the jokes were all about 9/11 and assumptions people make about being a trans woman. After I was cast, I read all the scripts, gave feedback, and made suggestions about what Lola might say or do in a scene

WHAT’SNEXT What are some of the suggestions you made? I don’t want to give away any jokes that are coming up, but, well, I introduced everyone to the concept of biological essentialism. And in the first episode, I wrote the line: “Check your privilege, faggot! And I can say that because I was one.”

How does Lola differ from the, albeit super limited, number of trans characters we’ve seen on TV in the last few years? I think Lola might be the first, or at least one of the first, comedic transgender roles played by a transgender actress on TV. Even though people will qualify other shows as “comedy,” the trans characters don’t get to do anything funny. There might be comedy happening a round them, but they’re never the ones generating the laughs. That’s what’s really exciting about Difficult People. The show is about narcissistic thirtysomething New Yorkers, and Lola is allowed to be just as imperfect and offensive as everybody else—while still being on the right side of the joke.

Do you think that balance would have been more difficult to strike if the show had cast a cis actress in the role of Lola? Sure. I mean, if you let someone else tell your story, they’re going to get the details wrong. Trans representation is really on trend at the moment. We’re seeing it more and more in pop culture and in national conversations about civil rights and legal protections. So if you introduce trans characters that aren’t played by trans people, you’re not really doing any favors to further trans visibility. It’s not just our narratives that are on the line; it’s our bodies, our presence—our very existence. This past year, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in hate crimes and murders of trans women of color, and it’s no coincidence that this uptick in violence comes at a time of increased trans representation in popular culture and political discourse. For more from our interview with Nayfack, go to nextmagazine.com. N

The levels to that line! I’ve literally never heard anything like it on TV before. It’s so cool how you get to break a lot of new ground with this character. She’s a politicized character, however flawed and hyperbolic her politics may be, so I get to speak some real truth on the show. I really love when Lola’s able to call out people’s assumptions, label them, and correct them. There’ve been times in my own life when people have treated me like a drag queen or a sex worker just because I’m a trans woman, so we bring those experiences to Lola so that she can shut them down and give voice to a trans experience that, so far, isn’t reflected in mainstream media.

HOROSCOPES FOR YOUR EX-BOYFRIEND BY TOPHER CUSUMANO

LIBRA (Sept 22-Oct 23) Astral projection requires less energy than dating a Libra. We all crave validation to some extent, but this guy’s desire for constant handholding is more exhausting than going to SoulCycle with a hangover. Today he’ll get a few inches trimmed off of his hair then he’ll ask all of his coworkers if they notice anything different about him. Spoiler: They don’t. Later, the indecisive Libra ex will find himself torn between going to work out or going to see his friend’s new play. He’ll end up skipping both to spend more time fishing for compliments on Instagram. Yes, your Libra ex was a charmer and there was something empowering about getting to call the shots, but the whole relationship ended up being more work than it was worth. Trust me, you can do better than Libra. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21) Jealous and cunning, Scorpio exes make great reality show contestants, but stressful partners. Scorpio is the type that hacks into your phone, reads your texts, and then convinces you this breech of privacy is actually all your fault. Today Scorpio will discover someone started a silly rumor about them. Instead of letting it go or addressing the problem directly, Scorpio will befriend their new enemy, learn their secrets, and use those secrets against them, thus destroying that person’s life forever and ever and ever. Then he’ll stand at a window drinking wine like Cersei Lannister after she blew up Winterfell. The real scary part is that he’ll manage all of that before his 4:00 pm Pilates class. Even though your Scorpio ex is fearless, determined, and seductive, it’s always a good idea to pass on passive aggression. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 31) Let’s not mince words here, your Sagittarian ex is a fucking mess. His boundless energy was infectious at first, but his inability to contain his impulses wore thin on your nerves. Today, the impatient Sagittarian will go to Coney Island and cut a bunch of upset kids in line for skeeball. Later, he’ll go to a drag show, drink four Red Bull & vodkas, then try to tip the queen with Adderall and unwanted hugs. By the end of the night, he’ll either be thrown out for trying to light a blunt in the bathroom, or he’ll end up face down on the dance floor in a puddle of his own vomit. Either way, be glad he’s not your problem. You’re all for spontaneity and having a good time, but you’re way too mature for his sloppy antics. 18 AUGUST 17, 2016

COMMENTARY

N

eed help getting over a recent breakup, or just want to make sure he’s completely miserable with-out you? Feel better about that string of failed relationships by convincing yourself it was always the other person’s fault! The universe has all of the answers you need in these horoscopes for your ex-boyfriends. This shady psychic is ready to spill all the T, and in this case T stands for: Trust me, you can do better.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19) Watching CSPAN on mute is more fun than a Capricorn ex. Chances are good you met him at work, because not even a shot of Propofol could get the ambitious Capricorn to relax. You thought he might be the one to get you to settle down, but he ended up boring you right out of his life. Today he’ll make a list of all the lists he has to make, before worrying if his navy blue shirt is too showy for the office. Later, the socially awkward Capricorn will suck the energy out of a coworker’s baby shower by explaining how newborns are more susceptible to deadly strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria. There was a lot of security in Capricorn’s levelheaded pragmatism, but you were just too colorful for his beige ass life. Trust me, you can do better than Capricorn. AQUARIUS (Jane 20-Feb 18) The planet Neptune is warmer than the icy Aquarian ex. Aquarians are aloof nonconformists, so even if you were dating exclusively, chances are good he avoided being labeled as your boyfriend for as long as he could. Today the Aquarian’s new boyfriend will say I love you for the first time, to which the Aquarian will reply, “Are you hungry?” A connoisseur of conspiracy theories, your ex will spend his night trying to convince his friends that Louis Tomlinson’s baby doesn’t actually exist. That’s a real conspiracy theory, by the way. Sadly, the only thing his air of mystery couldn’t hide was his fear of commitment. Trust me, you can do better than Aquarius. PISCES (Feb 19-March 20) A Pisces is like a puppy or other people’s kids: they’re adorable, fun to play with, and completely obnoxious after a few hours of direct contact. Breaking someone’s heart is never a good feeling, but he left you no choice as Pisces’ scatterbrain personality quickly lost its charm. Today, the gullible Pisces will give his credit card info to a guy in the middle of the sidewalk just because he has a clipboard and claims to work for a charity. Later, your romance hungry ex will go on a third date with a guy he likes. The guy will bring some condoms, the Pisces will bring a list of baby names. Pisces was a sweet guy, but long distance relationships are hard, and he lives in outer space. Trust me, you can do better than Pisces. N

MAKINGTHEPINESGREATAGAIN

Y

ou may have seen black hats litter heads of cute boys on the boardwalks of Fire Island that read, “Make The Pines Great Again.” The hats are the genius marketing tool of this year’s Pinefest, raging September 3 to 5 on the beaches of Fire Island Pines.

Pines Party producers Frank and Alan Baum loved the idea and said they would help Dyer, but he still wasn’t sure about how to execute his concept. “It started off as a beach club idea. It grew from there. My friends and supporters wouldn’t let me let go of the idea but I still wasn’t sure.”

Pinesfest is a celebration of both Fire Island and also the broader LGBTQ community, and a major source of fundraising for beneficiaries The Hetrick Martin Institute and Fire Island Pines Seashore Defense Fund. A music and arts festival with a VIP beach club attached to it, the festival looks to transform the vibes this Labor Day weekend for its inaugural takeover of the island. We chatted with Greg Dyer, organizer and creator of Pinesfest, before the big weekend to find out why he is doing this and how Pinesfest will make the Pines great again.

“Then I went to Coachella and I had a light bulb moment,” he excitedly says. “What if we married the beach club idea with a music festival idea? And we could set it up with food tents and different bands and DJs. What is going to keep people at a Beach Club all day ? They will want something more like good music. So that was the inspiration.”

“It really started when I started to travel,” Dyer told us over coffee at Fika in Hell’s Kitchen. “Places like Mykonos, Rio, St Tropez. I found myself over there with friends looking around at the different things they have on the beach. You can go there and get a beach chair for the day, get food, there are bars right there on the beach. And then I would come back to Fire Island and ask, “Why don’t we have this here?” It started off as question and then led to an answer, “Lets create this here.” “I talked to friends last year around Labor Day, and I started asking them what if we did a beach club on Fire Island. Where you can get a chair, a towel, with entertainment - would you go to it? Is that something you would want? It was a resounding, “Yes!”

So what types of music and art can people expect? “We have all different kinds but its mostly electronic because that is what the market wants. We have some live bands Midnight Magic are a nine piece disco band. Betty Who is headlining Saturday. It is meant to appeal to a wide audience. Local people, there are people flying in - Jason Kendig is coming from San Frasisco. Robbie Leslie, who is one of the original Studio 54 DJs. He lives down in Fort Lauderdale. He is coming in. The Cube Guys from Italy. They just played Pride in Toronto. Felipe Lira is from Brazil, he plays a lot of the big festivals there.” “In terms of art, we have commissioned a lot of pieces here. All these different cool pieces - so visually it is going to be stunning. We are building a huge replica of a beach chair. I went out to the builder in Queens who is working on it and they put it all together and tested it out. It looks amazing.” Sounds like the perfect photo opt to us. AUGUST 17, 2016 21

Iman Le Caire reigns supreme as the true monarch of the gay mecca. BY ALEXANDER KACALA PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILSONMODELS

24 AUGUST 17, 2016

ONTHECOVER I will not be triumphed over. - Cleopatra

L

ike Cleopatra, the last active pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt, Iman Le Caire will not be defeated. Her journey is one that starts in Egypt and continues today in Fire Island Pines, where she has created a home for herself and husband Jean-Manuel Pourquet. Some may say that The Pines is full of queens, but only one woman reigns supreme over them all - and that is Le Caire. The list of obstacles she had to overcome - stabbings, anti-gay persecution, rape, prostitution rings - reads similar to the plot line of an epic historical drama. In her homeland, gay and transgender Egyptians are harassed and entrapped, as the headline of a recent New York Times article reads. They wrote, “The crackdown has primarily targeted gay men and transgender women, some of whom have been arrested in raids on private homes or picked up on the street if their appearances raised suspicions. (Transgender women are usually prosecuted as men because the police, courts and news media in Egypt, unlike those in the West, make no meaningful distinction between gay men and transgender women, activists said.)” But today, Le Caire isn’t here to talk about that. Her husband and best friend Pourquet tell me via text before we sit down that, “She would like to talk more about the obstacles she encounters now in the gay community and nightlife as a transexual.” “Most trans people before they transition, in the beginning - they are not secure enough,” she tells me from the veranda behind Share Gurl. Our one hour long interview is constantly interrupted by passer-bys who just have to come over to hug and kiss, kiss Le Caire. True queen status. “They need help. They need to feel secure. This is only going to happen if we give them that, you know? I became secure because of my husband. He secured me. He was always pushing me to be myself. He gave me that self-confidence so I can fit in my own skin and not be scared.” Le Caire didn’t expect Pourquet to stay with her during her transition because they met, “when I was a boy.” Jean-Manuel Pourquet, a store owner in The Pines, met Le Caire before her transition. At that time, she had just come from the Middle East on a visa secured through many denials. Working at the front desk at a David Barton gym, Le Caire was stoic, quiet, and introverted. Shy and struggling with identity issues, Pourquet saw through all of that and complimented her smile one day.

AUGUST 17, 2016 25

MY FAMILY IN EGYPT SAY THAT I DIED. THEY BASICALLY HAD A FUNERAL AND KILLED ME

BECAUSE THEY HATED ME.

“I was not use to that. I was new to the country. When people told me I was beautiful here, I would never take the compliment. I never believed I was beautiful or sexy or gorgeous or anything.” Pourquet gave his number to Le Caire. After six months, she finally called him. During this time, Le Caire developed an intense addiction to crystal meth. “It was my only escape. One day I was really desperate and I said to myself, ‘It is time to get the fuck out of this life and just kill myself.’ Jean-Manuel showed up and told me we would change this together.” Pourquet helped Le Caire go to doctors and therapists to resolve her addiction issues, which led to a revelation she had one night lying in bed looking into the eyes of her lover. She turned to him and said,”If I want to have a life again, I have to do my transition. He didn’t even hesitate, ‘Whatever you want, I love you. You become a woman or you are a man, I will love you.’” “Then, in that moment, I knew what love was. He just stole my heart. It was all about love.”

IF I WANT TO HAVE A LIFE AGAIN, I HAVE TO DO MY TRANSITION. But despite being pushed to true authenticity by Pourquet, she still faced judgement from friends and was ostracized for her decision. “I lost so many of my friends during the beginning of my transition. My gay friends - not even talking about my straight friends. I remember one person, who was a friend of mine, when I did my transition, he told me, “ I don’t want to know you anymore.” I then asked him,’Why?’ He said, ‘Because look at you.’ It made me feel really hurt inside.” Others rudely questioned Le Caire’s decision because of her masculinity, “How dare you Iman. Why did you do that? You were a beautiful boy. How dare you transition to look like this. In the beginning it was tough. I didn’t know myself and I was trying things out. I am not that tiny. But I was really big and huge and muscular.”

26 AUGUST 17, 2016

I did not know who Le Caire was before her transition, I only met her for the first time earlier this summer in The Pines. I had heard about her and seen photos from photographer Jeff Eason, but I didn’t really get it to be honest. When I met her for the first time, I understood. There is a light that sort of emanates from her being. Yes, for a woman she is big. But her size only highlights and accentuates her grandness. She pounds down the pedestrian boardwalks of The Pines with deviance and grace - two things probably not usually in the same sentence. But if you see her walk, you understand. She has created respect for herself in a male dominated environment that at times - still has a long ways to go when it comes to inclusivity.

While Egyptians are throwing transgender woman and gay men together in an offensive classification, here we are dividing ourselves that has negative effects on our community. Judging each other and at times demeaning the other letters in “LGBTQ.” “This is what I am asking. When you see a woman, a trans woman transitioning remember where you come from. Remember Stonewall. Remember how you had to fight. It was not easy for you. Don’t feel that you are normal and we are fake. Show some respect for these people and treat them with love. This is my message to gay people. We all come from the same place. Gay, trans, - some say they are transgender, others say they are transsexual. In the end - we all come from the same issues. We should support each other.”

“Give people the eye of love. No judgment. It doesn’t matter what the fuck people look like. If you are ugly or beautiful, it should not be an issue. As long as they are respectful of you, why should you look at them with judgment?” I bring up that this happens on the Island a lot at times. Boys walking down the boardwalk in a cute look that when they get a compliment from a passerby, they can’t even crack a smile or God forbid say, “Thank you.” I think to myself, “I’m not trying to fuck you, dude. I am just trying to be nice.” This ego and air annoys Le Caire. “It happens here a lot. It is annoying. It’s not funny. It’s not fucking funny,” she assertively says. But regardless of the airs that exist, Le Caire has found a tribe. A diverse tribe, they have become her family - following in her shadow to the countless events she makes appearances or sleeping on the floor of her and Pourquet’s flat on Bay Walk. “My family in Egypt say that I died. They basically had a funeral and killed me because they hated me. So I never really had a family. So when I came here, I had this dream to create a big family around me.” “I started being selective. Jean-Manuel taught me how to be nice to everyone but know who are your friends. I chose a group of people who love me. They really love me. They treat me the way I should be treated, with respect and love. People will say when you have one friend you are lucky. I thank God for giving me such an amazing group of people who love and respect me.” “They are not my friends. They are my family. I am their mother. They are also my brothers and my sisters. If I am down, they will run for me. And when I have a bad moment, they come and lift me up. And for this, I am blessed.” N AUGUST 17, 2016 27

3 SPOTS FOR THE NIGHTLIFE SEEKER

F

or some, vacation isn’t all about relaxation. Or, I should say, some people are at their most relaxed with a couple vodka-sodas in their gut, twirling on a dance floor or floating like a butterfly among throngs of fellow revelers on a bar’s smoking patio. For these individuals—gay men who seek drunks, DJs, drag queens and various other creatures of the night while on holiday—there are cities the world over whose nightlife scenes are the stuff of legend. These are but a few tried-and-true favorites. SAN FRANCISCO The Bay Area—a prime locale for the Angeleno who only has the weekend to spare— has a ton to offer those seeking boozy nights amidst a new crowd of hunky men. Much like our own SoCal city, it boasts two markedly different gay scenes, made up of West Hollywood-like gay ghetto The Castro and the more rough-and-tumble neighborhood of SoMa.Book your travel right and you’ll start your evening out with one of Peaches Christ’s legendary stage parodies at the Castro Theatre. Past productions—generally starring Drag Race queens—have included She-Devil, Sister Act and Hocus Pocus. Those looking to spend the rest of their evening in the Castro can hop between 440 for draft beers, Badlands for a sweaty dance floor or popular video bar Midnight Sun for Top 40 and a drag performance. Those seeking beards, leather and even cheaper drinks can head South of Market to mainstays SF Eagle, Lone Star Saloon and the Heklina-owned club (which also hosts the weekly drag night Mother) Oasis. Come 2 a.m., those willing to carouse with heteros (and pay a stiff cover) can party ‘til morning at The Endup, open til 8 a.m. on weekends. LONDON It’s hardly a surprise that one of the world’s most vibrant destinations would also house a thrilling nightlife scene.

Whether you’re seeking a casual night out at the pub (head to The Duke of Wellington in Soho or the nearby Comptons, both of which are perfect pre-gaming spots), a night of dancing to the gay divas (you’ll want to join the young crowd at G-A-Y Bar) or a night of campy drag, live music or cabaret (all of which is offered at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern), you can find it here. The one event not to be missed by those seeking hairy men and hedonism—and, really, who isn’t?—is Horse Meat Disco, a party that sees the world-famous DJ collective take over the dance floor of Eagle London every Sunday night. It’s an assuredly packed crowd, and a guaranteed good time. MONTRÉAL You’d be hard-pressed to find a city more ready, willing and able to party than Montréal during its annual Black & Blue Festival, which coincidentally celebrates its quarter-century anniversay this October. But the city is a lively one after dark nonetheless; simply head to the gay village of Saint Catherine Street (a pedestrian street from May to September) to have every type of night out at your disposal. You’ll find drag each night of the week at Cabaret Mado, which doubles as a popular dancing spot. Those seeking raunch and fetish gear should head to L’Aigle Noir (the city’s own Eagle establishment), and head back for a Sunday afternoon spent on the rooftop patio. Take your pick of hip-hop, house or pop music at Complexe Sky, Canada’s largest gay club, which offers four floors and a pool and hot tub on the terrace. And those looking for the attention of male strippers—who regularly strip down completely and are quick to offer you a lap dance—should head to Campus or Stock Bar in the village. —S.H. 5WAYS TO CREATE

A STRONG SEXY BACK

BY TOM BONANTI

B

ecause your back consists of such a large series of muscle groups, there is no single exercise that hits the entire region effectively. It’s made up of many interconnecting muscles – including, but not limited to the upper and lower latissimus dorsi (lats), trapezius (traps), rhomboids and spinal erectors. These are also powerful and highly functional muscles that need to be strong and flexible. Your approach to training back should reflect the need for a variety of different movements and exercises.

32 AUGUST 17, 2016

FITNESS Here are five essentials for back that are sure to improve strength, develop size, and insure that V- shape symmetry so prized by so many! Work back twice a week using this routine. For optimal results, go for 3 sets of 8-12 repetitions for each exercise. Always be mindful of proper form. WIDE GRIP LAT PULL DOWNS The best way to begin your back workout. These can be performed at the Smith machine or any cable device in your gym. Sit on the bench facing the machine and wedge your knees under the restraining pad provided if they are provided. Take a very wide, overhand grip on the bar above your head. Inhale and pull the bar down to your upper chest, slightly arching your back and bring your elbows back. Exhale as you complete the movement. This exercise is excellent for adding thickness and width to the upper and middle back. A special note: I prefer to do lat pull downs to the front and never behind the neck and head, since the latter movement puts undue stress on your rotator cuff muscles. SEATED ROWS Superb for both building and stretching your lats. Sit on the floor or long bench close to the floor facing the machine. Place your feet against the foot stops and lean toward the pulley. Inhale and pull the handle until it touches your lower rib cage. Never arch or round your back as you do these rows with heavy weights. As you pull the handle toward your torso be sure your elbows travel as far back as possible. Exhale as you complete the movement. ONE ARM DUMBBELL ROWS Help you to isolate and sculpt each side of your back. Grasp a dumbbell with your palm facing inward. Rest the opposite hand and knee on a bench. Keep your back straight as you bend forward from the waist. Steady your upper body in position, inhale and pull the dumbbell as high as possible, keeping your elbow up and back. Exhale as you complete the movement. BARBELL DEADLIFTS Great for back development and perfect for those times when you wish to work a little hamstrings, quads and glutes into your routine. Simply stand, feet apart, knees unlocked in front of the barbell. Sort of “square” your body off into a solid fighting stance. Bend from the waist, knees bent as well and bring the barbell up to your waist as you exhale. Inhale on the downward motion. DUMBBELL SHRUGS Superior for developing superlative upper traps and a strong neck. Grasp two heavy dumbbells of like weight tightly in each hand and shrug your shoulders ( no bending the arms) to your ears as if to motion, “ I could care less!” Exhale as you shrug upward, inhale on the way back down.
