Got Gay-tention Deficit Disorder? Are Lady Gaga and Robert Pattinson starring in the Broadway musical about the Barneys Warehouse Sale? Read on… BY MATT BELL
1. The dates of the infamous Barneys Warehouse sale have been announced! End of summer be damned— they’ll be helping you get your fall look on from August 19 till September 6. 2. Very high tea! Rumors are circling the ’Net that LADY GAGA’S next corporate endorsement will make her the face of Twinings Tea and that they’ll create their own new flavor in the fame monster’s honor. 3. Despite having lesbian Council Speaker Christine Quinn, THE NAKED COWBOY, and a little bar called Stonewall, New York City got bested by San Francisco as America’s No. 1 gay city. This according to UCLA’s Williams Institute and its, shall we say, fuzzy math. 4. Case in point—tickets for the Broadway Revival of Angels in America go on sale this Tuesday, August 3, with shows starting on September 14. 5. Put that shit away! According to new numbers from the City’s Department of Criminal Justice, POT POSSESSION and open alcohol containers made for the most busts and summonses in 2009. 6. ELTON JOHN is working on a musical adaptation of George Orwell’s classic allegory, Animal Farm. Too bad, we were hoping for the porn version. Mr. Lucas? 7. Hollywood’s “coming out” guru, Howard Bragman, is set to film a new reality-TV show featuring public figures ready to ditch the closet for the limelight! 8. If you’ve got ROBERT PATTINSON all up in your daydreams, it’ll soon be easier to put him in your pants! This September, Britain’s Marks & Spencer is releasing briefs inspired by the Twilight stud! 9. Shhh! Don’t tell The Real World: New Orleans’ RYAN, but GLAAD gave MTV top honors for their portrayal of gay characters on TV. 10. Most in need of a drink? Mayor Bloomberg, who this week suggested that city residents be charged a fee according to the amount of trash they throw out. Um…like, do the boys we kick out count? Make it a Garbage Pail: a cup of beer, a cup of OJ, a shot of Amaretto and a dash of rum. 10 JULY 30, 2010

If you’re a bear—or just a Goldilocks who likes hangin’ with a hairy harem—then you’ve probably know Joe Fiore. He’s the mastermind behind the Drenched pool parties, Woof!, Dance 208, Rockbear Sundays at Rockbar, and the recent Howl party at Cherry Grove’s Ice Palace. On August 7, he’s bringing back the flavor of legendary DJ Lary Levan and the Paradise Garage with Dance: 208 Garage Classics at the LGBT Center. “I was a DJ wannabe and volunteered at the Center Dances to get experience,” Fiore says of his nightlife origins. “When the head of the dance committee left they asked me to run it. Honestly I just wanted to dance but I found out I liked running the party, too.” We threatened Joe with a bottle of Nair and got him to spill his guts. —Dan Avery
WHAT’S BEST INTENTIONS (Clockwise from top left) Farrad, Angelo Tursi, Heather Litteer, Sean B and Eric White
WHAT CAME FIRST, THE BAND OR THE STUDIO TRACK? In today’s producer-run music biz, that line gets blurrier by the hour. And so it was for Sean Bumgarner, best known as DJ Sean B, one of the creative forces behind the nightlife phenomenon known as Spank. “[Best Mate] was formed as a way to perform tracks from a studio project I started in 2008,” he explains. “Now the band and live performance is finding its way back into the studio, influencing my music writing and developing parts for tracks we have been playing.” To bring his boogie-disco sound from the late ’70s and early ’80s to life, Bumgarner tapped a Who’s Who of talents from New York’s small queer-rock scene, including vocals by Farrad and Big Art Group’s Heather Litteer, with Street Heroes’ Eric White and Angelo Tursi rounding things out. “It’s been amazing to write music and see it come to life through these amazing players,” Bumgarner notes about stepping out from behind the turntables. “Performing these songs really gives a different insight than DJ-ing them.” They’ll continue to grow their new-disco sound at upcoming shows at Bowery Electric and Public Assembly and, of course, in the studio. (Their new single, “So We Rise,” should be released in August.) “Most of what has made this band become more than a one-time performance of a club track has been the audience response,” says Bumgarner about their growing fan base. “We consistently get screams outta the crowd!” —Benjamin Solomon Visit MySpace.com/BestMateNYC for more info.

A LOOK AT NEW YORK CITY’S GROWING ATTEMPTS
DOOR-TO-DOOR SERVICE Rainbow Station, Les Hommes, DVD Video and The Blue Store
D
URING ITS LONG HISTORY, a certain midtown Manhattan adult store—let’s call it the Love Shack—rarely, if ever, closed its front doors. It was a point of professional pride for the owners, not to mention a convenience for the randy customers. Yet one day four years ago, those doors were locked to the public permanently. You could see the Shack’s shuttering as a victory for the city. Since Giuliani’s reign, New York had embarked on a mission to severely limit (to be diplomatic) the location and number of adult businesses via zoning laws. At the time of its closing, in fact, the Shack was technically a “60/40” store, the result of a 2001 ordinance that only allowed 40 percent of an establishment’s content to be designated as “adult,” or ex-

plicitly sexual. It’s a landmark ruling the city has used to regulate sex shops in ever-gentrifying New York. In addition to hampering the Shack’s offerings, the authorities were citing the store for violations ranging from noncode signage to alleged hustling, as well as whatever trivial infractions they could dream up that would necessitate a fine or a time-consuming court appearance. It was like a torturous game—one designed to see how long it took before your opponent forfeited. The ongoing legal battles were devastating to the store’s already declining profit margin (thanks to the availability of online porn), so staying in business made less and less sense. When a forced closure seemed imminent, the owners reached an agreement with the city that they would shutter of their own volition.
SPLIT
TO BRING ADULT-VIDEO STORES TO THEIR KNEES.
I knew this store well. My family owned it. It put me through college, sent me to summer camp, paid for my braces and helped buy my first car (which was used, mind you). It helped afford me a comfortable, but by no means spoiled, Jewish middle-class life. My father had to deliver the bad news that day and wasn’t looking forward to it. The morning-shift employees (some of whom had worked there for more than 20 years) had assembled for his mysterious announcement. After he explained that the store would cease operations, there was no time for tears—we had to start stripping the shelves, dismantling booths (which over the decades had gone from screening Super-8 reels to VHS to a fully computerized system), packing inventory and removing all signs of what had once been there.
Later this year, a similar scenario could play out all over the city, forcing other adult shops—including, potentially, Chelsea’s Blue Store and Unicorn, and Uptown’s Les Hommes—to either close or comply with draconian regulations. The measures in question include rules about store layout and a ban on any booths whatsoever, if a 2001 judgment withstands appeal. You see, in March, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Louis York ruled that, “certain bookstores and video stores which purport to operate on a ‘60/40’ basis… but nonetheless exhibit a focus on adult materials, are adult establishments notwithstanding their 60/40 configuration.” The decision is already facing a battle from lawyer Herald Fahringer, representing a group of storeowners dubbed the Coalition for Free Expression (COFFE). They have until SepJULY 30, 2010 17
tember to mount an appeal, which could take up to another year to settle. “What we’ve done is challenged the constitutionality of this new ordinance,” says Fahringer. “We’re arguing that the law goes too far. You can’t micromanage the store; you can’t tell the operator of a store where his cash register can be. You can’t tell them where to put their merchandise and how many [non-adult] titles they have to have.” This brand of micromanaging, as Fahringer calls it, began during Rudy Giuliani’s first term in 1995, when he started “cleaning up” Times Square. Strict zoning laws were passed, detailing where sex shops, topless clubs, peep shows and porno theaters could be located— not within 500 feet of a school, day-care center, house of worship or another adultoriented business. According to one source, 95 percent of the city is no longer zoned for adult businesses, in effect creating a censorship zone. And unlike other U.S. cities where zoning limits have been implemented to control adult businesses, New York refused to “grandfather” in existing establishments. Enter Fahringer and COFFE, fighting for their rights and their livelihood. The 60/40 rule followed, dictating that no more than 40 percent of store space and quantity could be dedicated to adult material. “To keep it simple,” Fahringer explains, “if
Downplaying the severity of the situation, Deputy Chief Robin Binder of the New York City Law Department’s Administrative Law Division—one of the team behind the 2001 60/40 ruling—insists that, “the zoning regulations provide plenty of space for places with adult uses to operate. They’re just restricted from being near schools, houses of worship, and near residential districts.” Ironically enough, by the time the 2001 case is finally wrapped up—and nobody knows when that will be—there may not be any 60/40s left to shut down. New York City’s strict ordinances, coupled with the rise of high-speed Internet porn and a sluggish economy, are doing a fine enough job of driving the adult businesses into oblivion. “I don’t think they have to worry about people opening a new store nowadays,” says one store manager. “A lot probably will close on their own.” What will we lose when these sex shops disappear altogether? Certainly not the merchandise—adult-video sites are booming, Walgreens and Duane Reade sell an increasingly sophisticated variety of lube and condoms, and dedicated boutiques like Babeland and The Pleasure Chest—currently unmolested by the city’s witch hunt—offer anything you’d want to stick inside yourself or a partner.
“What We are arguing is the laW goes too far. You can’t micro-manage the store, You can’t tell the operator of a store Where his cash register can be.” — COFFE lawyer Herald Fahringer you had 1,000 DVDs, 600 would have to be non-adult and 400 could be adult. But if the store was 1,000 square feet, 600 feet would have to be allocated to non-adult material. Basically that’s what we’re operating under now.” When first enforcing the codes, city inspectors took them very seriously, coming in to measure square footage and count merchandise. Fahringer recalls taking his own tape measure around to the COFFE stores he represented. Some stores filled their non-adult space with any bargain videos they could find—say, 500 copies of a single Laurel & Hardy VHS title. This practice was quickly regarded as a “sham” by the city—the videos were obviously filler, never intended to fly off shelves—and the stores were still deemed adult in focus. In 2001, amendments to the zoning laws were added to close the loopholes. Challenges to these rulings, meanwhile, have been filed regularly ever since. When Mayor Bloomberg took office in 2002, many expected a less aggressive atmosphere regarding adult businesses (and raunchy gay nightlife, for that matter, which had also been hampered by Giuliani and his enforcement of arcane cabaret statutes). But according to several bookstore owners and managers, within a few years of Bloomberg’s election, an influx of new 60/40 stores in Chelsea and around Port Authority drew the city’s ire with glaring signage and neighbor complaints, and a crackdown ensued. 18 JULY 30, 2010
Which leaves the sleaze—an element you can only find in brick-and-mortar “dirty bookstores.” Manhunt and Grindr are great, but they don’t offer the spontaneity of buddy booths or the alluring scent of sex, poppers and disinfectant. Such things are electric—and part of New York’s rich gay history. I had my own special moments trolling Times Square booths back in the day, getting a visceral thrill from the occasional hand job. I’m not so interested in that scene anymore (in fact, not at all), but its disappearance is a loss. It should still be an option for consenting adults. Maybe it’s time to start over. Some enterprising P.T. Barnum of erotica could get their hands on the zoning map, invest in a chunk of what few free-expression zones still exist—even if they’re in a less-convenient industrial nook in one of the outer boroughs—and create something new and exciting. Something that says, “fuck you” to bureaucratic Puritans and delivers raunchy fun off the city’s radar. Yes, perhaps it’s the 60/40’s time to go the way of the dodo. But not sex—not from this city. “Without sex and vice you can’t have a great city,” says longtime gay civil libertarian Bill Dobbs. “The campaign to get rid of erotica in this town is like cutting the underbelly out. Eventually it will suffocate New York. Pleasure and erotica refresh culture—we need to accommodate pleasure, erotica and sexiness rather than try and suffocate them.” N

RAINBOW OF COLORS UNDER THE SUN The packed beach in Cherry Grove during FIBO in 2009
ire Island is truly an escape for everyone. And that’s never more apparent than during Fire Island Black Out, or FIBO, an annual weekend welcoming gays of color and their friends to the gay island paradise for performances, parties, and plain old fun in the sun. However, Philadelphia promoter and FIBO organizer James Wellons notes that FIBO is not just an all-black event. “The original organizers of FIBO chose the name due to the event’s locality and as a reflection of the majority of its initial attendees,” he explains. “As FIBO progresses so does its ethnic composition.” We chatted with Wellons about this year’s event and what guests of all colors can hope to find.
F
FIBO was created as an alternative beach event for the New York LGBT community. Why is this alternative necessary? While FIBO welcomes everyone regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation, the majority of our attendees are LGBT people of color. FIBO is one of a handful of national events where the LGBT community of color can come together to celebrate and share
38 JULY 30, 2010
our community with our families, friends and the rest of the world. What do you feel has made the event so successful over the past few years? The atmosphere is exciting, welcoming and friendly. Everyone is there to have a good time. What started out with 50 people in 2003 has grown to an expected 4,000 people this year. Speaking of this year, anything new or different about the festivities? A lot! We added a writers’ panel featuring four prolific and accomplished gay authors of color discussing relationships, the down low, gay marriage and other interesting topics. We also added a poetry slam and spoken-word contest at the Ice Palace. And we celebrity hosts for all of our events! What performances are you most excited about? Grammy-nominated artist Brian Slade [formerly known as Tonéx] will perform with a live band. Tonéx is known for his gospel records, but his musical efforts
also include R&B, soul and hip-hop. He will present his distinct secular sounds exclusively to FIBO attendees during our legendary Bump & Dip Dance and Pool Party. What challenges face New York’s gay black community in 2010? If the gay black community in New York is like that of Philadelphia, then I would say that one significant challenge is funding for those organizations that benefit our community. This is why part of FIBO’s mission is to raise awareness about nonprofit organizations that provide life-sustaining resources to the LGBT community of color. This year the net proceeds from FIBO will benefit the Housing Works Haiti AIDS Relief Fund and the Ali Forney Center for homeless LGBT teens. In addition, we will make a contribution to the Beach Preservation Fund of the Friends of the Fire Island National Seashore. N Fire Island Black Out (FIBO) runs August 13–15 in Cherry Grove on Fire Island. Visit FireIslandBlackOut.com for more info.

Katy Perry
BY KEO NOZARI
THERIGHTTRACK e may be in the thick of summer, but fall is just six short weeks away. That’s not such a bad thing with the inevitable slew of new fall music releases. And ironically, a lot of the summer’s hottest songs are translating into fall’s most anticipated albums. Dreaming up something big is Katy Perry with her forthcoming Teenage Dream. Boasting a cottonRobyn candy-cloud cover (and Perry’s naked, sun-kissed skin), her sophomore album surfs in on August 24. First single “California Gurls” has already been a dream come true for Perry. As we predicted last spring, “California Gurls” is one of the biggest songs of the summer—and even one of the biggest songs ever—smashing the record for all-time spins at Top 40 radio with over 13,000 spins in one week! The also track spent three weeks at No. 1 on pop radio (setting the record for the quickest rise to the top spot since Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” in May 2005), and topped the iTunes Singles chart for eight weeks. And already looking ahead to next summer, Perry will make her film debut in the The Smurfs as the voice of Smurfette. Another breakout of the summer, Robyn—who had us crying on the dance floor (and loving it) with her heartbreaking “Dancing on My Own”—returns with her new new album Body Talk Pt. 2 on September 6 in the U.K. Lead single “Hang with Me” is a synthed-up dance-floor-ready treatment of the lush acoustic track featured on Body Talk Pt. 1 (released in June). Robyn is said to be releasing a Pt. 3 before the year is up! Those loving “Commander” will get in line for Kelly Rowland’s third album. Originally slated for September 21, the as-yet-untitled work has been pushed back until October 26. We thought she was poised to be a modern version of Donna Summer after last summer’s sensational “When Love Takes Over” made a huge splash. And while DJs and club audiences love her latest, “Commander,” American radio’s cool reception to the song may have scared her camp into going back to her urban roots. We’re a little underwhelmed by the dual singles released for the
U.S.—“Rose Colored Glasses” and “Grown Woman.” We hope the other songs command some better attention ’cause we really want her to win! Brit band The Script, coming off their well-scripted hit “Breakeven” already release their sophomore album, Science & Faith, on September 13. Lead single “For the First Time” is another pop/rock pop ballad beauty. Swift to release a new album as well is Taylor Swift. Her third studio album, Speak Now, hits October 25 with first single “Mine” expected to be all yours by mid-August, just in time for, well, the end of summer. N

DEAD, AND LOVING IT Robert Duvall and Bill Murray in Get Low
reel loVe GET LOW Time Investment: 100 min. Return on Investment: 80 min. he premise of Get Low—a man throws his own funeral party—suggests a quirky “based on a true story” comedy. Instead, Aaron Schneider’s film is decidedly serious, with Robert Duvall in an impressive (Oscar-worthy?) turn as eccentric loner Felix “Bush” Breazeale. The film’s striking opening shot, a house in flames in the dark of night, immediately establishes the tone. David Boyd’s hauntingly beautiful cinematography and authentic Southern locations establish a strong sense of place as we are introduced to Felix and the 1930s Tennessee townsfolk who fear and shun him. After the hermit confounds the local preacher with his request, an undertaker’s protégé brings the idea to his boss, savvy salesman Frank Quinn (Bill Murray, always a pleasure). Soon, Quinn and Buddy (nicely played by Lucas Black) are putting together the service. When Mattie Darrow (Sissy Spacek), who has a mysterious connection to Felix’s past, enters the fray, he begins to open up to those around him. Handsomely produced and well acted across the board, Get Low is a strong piece with only occasional missteps into heavy-handedness. The main draw here is Duvall, who gives an involving, lived-in performance befitting his legendary status. There’s an awful lot riding on the third-act speech he gives at the party, which finally reveals his true demons. That the moment of catharsis underwhelms would seem to be the screenwriters’ fault, not Duvall’s. Get Low is a passionate and unusual film, but it’s the star who renders it memorable. —Justin Lockwood

THE EXTRA MAN Time Investment: 108 min. Return on Investment: 93 min. eading Jonathan Ames’ 1999 novel, The Extra Man, the quirky characters and New York setting make it an obvious choice for transferring to the silver screen. Fortunately directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini have delivered a cinematic version of The Extra Man (Magnolia Pictures) that possibly improves on Ames’ outstanding book. At the outset, Louis Ives (Paul Dano) has been let go from his job at a cushy private school—the consequence of nearcrippling awkwardness and a tendency to cross-dress. Making lemonade out of lemons, Ives ventures to Manhattan and rents a room from the eccentric Henry Harrison (a divine Kevin Kline). As Ives attempts to decipher his transvestite
R

interests, he also tries to get closer to Harrison, a bachelor living off the largess of wealthy Manhattan widows as a walker. Harrison takes Ives under his wing, introducing him to his lady friends and the finer points of being “an extra man.” (The term comes from the ability to even out an odd-numbered social occasion.) Dano conveys the right amount of naïveté for Ives, but this is Kline’s vehicle. Harrison is at times delightful, delusional, selfish and hilarious, and Kline masters him at every turn. Playing Mary, a sweet if overly P.C. colleague at the magazine Louis works for, Katie Holmes is, dare I say, charming. Also great is John C. Reilly as Gershon, Harrison’s downstairs neighbor who looks like Hagrid and sounds like Tiny Tim. These are the off-kilter characters we all moved to New York to meet. —Dan Avery

CURTAIN UP WITH GLEE
THE GAY IVY LIVIN’ ON THE REAL BY DAVID HURST fter an unaccountable rave review for John Gregor’s With Glee in the New York Times, the press descended on this whimsical production and we scratched our collective heads in befuddled amazement. First seen at the 2007 New York Musical Festival (NYMF) and well-directed here by Igor Goldin (late of the Yank! team), With Glee, I’m sorry to report, is a dreary, derivative, cloying, unfocused and underwritten waste of time. The five actors (Zach Bandler, Christopher Davis Carlisle, Jason Edward Cook, Dan Lawler and Max Spitulnik) who play thirteen-year-olds sent away to reform school, are fine—as are the two character actors (Greg Horton and Erin Jerozal) who play all the adult men and women in their lives, though Horton chews the scenery a bit as the 90-minute show progresses. But devoid of plot, dramatic build and any basis in reality, With Glee is a grim 90 minutes of relentless disappointment. Dixon Place’s 19th Annual Hot! Festival (HotFestival.org) has offerings for queer people everywhere. I recently saw The Gay Ivy, a pseudo-documentary piece about the fallout from a 2009 Yale Alumni Magazine issue that highlighted the gay and lesbian presence at Yale, past and present, through a series of songs, monologues and readings from the actual letters alumni sent in response to the controversial issue. Well put together with a superb cast that includes original conceivers Thomas Dolan and Megan Stern along with Tim Eliot, Emily Jenda, Kobi Libii and pianist Jonathan Breit, The Gay Ivy is off to a good start but still needs shaping, perspective and more tension to be truly effective. Its songs, by a collective of composers, are especially strong and it will be interesting to see how The Gay Ivy continues to find its voice. Already in full voice is the diva performer, Michael Lynch, who wowed his audience with his autobiographical cabaret show, Livin’ on the Real. A series of reminiscences told with a

background of funk, R&B, disco, gospel and soul—all courtesy of the talented (and adorable!) Steve Kaufman—Lynch rocked the house with his ferocious, take-no-prisoners approach to survival in the rough-and-tumble world of growing up a gay African-American child in the South and in the Bronx in the ’60s and ’70s. True, Lynch needs to edit and streamline his stories to make them cleaner and more effective, and he also needs to give more attention to his diction as his words fly fast and furious. But overall, Livin’ on the Real is an entertaining and moving testament to a life fought for, lived and loved. And that’s a message more of us need to take to heart. BY PETER SHERWOOD f for some peculiar reason you haven’t actually been to Cola’s, it’s probably fair to assume that you’ve at least walked by the Chelsea mainstay many times. But most are aware that the little Italian eatery has been a neighborhood staple for years, offering a vibrant menu inspired by owner Nicola Accardi’s recent travels to Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily and Rome. We sipped lightly fizzy glasses of Astoria Prosecco ($9/glass; $36/bottle) that were on the drier side and nibbled on bread and herbed ricotta while mulling over the ecclectic menu. Grilled Baby Portuguese Octopus ($10.95) was a fine start, well cooked with plenty of garlic, delicious roasted potatoes (in olive oil—no butter is used here) and some arugula for greens. Apart from the alwayspesky little bones, Grilled Sardines ($9.75) were quite tasty with a beautiful greenish-gold iridescence topped by a huge, handsomely grilled jalapeño pepper. All of the pastas were tempting, such as the Pappardelle Wild Mushroom Veal Ragu ($13.95), the Rigatoni Pollo Pazzo ($11.95) that we spied at a neighboring table, and of course the Lasagna Classica ($11.95), but having just left the oppressive heat outside, we felt we should curb our carb loading. The Gnocchi di Casa Gorgonzola Dolce ($11.95) entrée was a good solution—the gnocchi weren’t too dense, nor was the sauce too rich; it was great to slather around in the hearty orbs. Wild Boar Meatballs ($7.95) with pine nuts were roughly formed (just like Mama would make!) and covered in a home-style Sunday sauce, which was stunning both in taste and hue. Veal Prosciutto e Piselli ($17.95) was a delectable dish indeed, with thinly sliced fresh mozzarella evenly sandwiched between excellent, tender veal and tangy prosciutto. From the list of homemade desserts, we wavered between the Lemon Ricotta Cheese Cake ($5.75) and the Tiramisu ($5.75) but went instead for the Chocolate Mousse & Berries ($5.75), a delightfully aromatic confection full of dark chocolate flavor balanced by a considerable dollop of whipped cream. So pop in and see what’s cookin’ at Cola’s! N

ick Accardi has been an proud Chelsea business owner since 1988, first opening Italian eatery Cola’s Restaurant in Chelsea before delivering a much-needed breath of fresh air to ’mo central with the neighboring Viceroy. Accardi trained for many years in Italy studying various regional styles of cooking, and his passion for food has led him to eat his way all through Manhattan. So what cuisine quells Accardi’s cravings? “In this culture of carb-and-calorie counting, I insist that the best comfort food is still pizza and we’re not talking runof-the-mill pizza; it must be the best. I have relied on Rocco’s Pizza (162 Seventh Ave, 212-633-9555) for over 12 years— and not just because I own the joint. It’s managed and run by real Italians, and I always can rely on Pasquale (from Naples!) to help me custom order my pizzas. Grandma Pizza ($17), Fresh Mozzarella Pizza ($14.75) and Chicken Breast Parmigiana ($8.50) are favorites and the Lasagna ($7.50) is my grandmother’s recipe. Rocco’s imported tomatoes and fresh basil and top-quality mozzarella have always satisfied my special urges. Plus, they cater, so your group can satisfy those special cravings together.” N

BOY FOR SALE Matt Richie in Brothel Boys
ROD: These average-looking Brothel Boys are surprisingly hot. Take Jackson Kay, whose body is O.K., but whose cock is a K.O.! Kay uses it to best advantage on Benjamin O’Neil’s ass, which also takes a licking. MANUEL: Not every porn actor has to be an Adonis, but some of these blokes should really lay off the Yorkshire pudding. Jae Anderson—a 20-something brothel patron whose girlfriend won’t do anal—has a cute face and a killer dick, but that layer of
EsCoRTDiaries (Pacific Sun/Seal Productions, HardOnTV.com, PacificSunEntertainment.com) ear Diary: Today I saw a boy and I’ve got a feeling we’ll be so much more than friends—once I get the approval code on his Master Card!
D
ROD: When a guy like Kris Kringle body double Matt Lowe gets his stocking stuffed by someone as hot as Danny Star, you know it’s got to be a commercial transaction. But honestly, there was something about “Santa hires a hustler” that turned me on in a twisted way. MANUEL: Lowe is an older, heavyset white-haired man with red pubes, a small dick and sweaty-asscrack undies. The contrast with young, fit, cute Star couldn’t be more extreme. Still, through sucking, fucking and dildo play, Star’s gorgeous, thick, uncut dick stays rock-hard. What a pro. ROD: Talk about contrasts. Skinny, hairless James Allen hires buff rent boy Warren Rodgers (an older hooker version of Erasure’s Andy Bell)
54 JULY 30, 2010
body blubber was too much to ignore. ROD: I love a “straight” guy who can’t wait to get a hold of cock, so Anderson’s body didn’t matter to me. It was hot when the brothel owner lined up four of his boys on the couch and pulled each cock out to show Anderson the merchandise. The best scene is with Matt Brooks and Matt Richie, who go at each other’s asses forever (even though I could’ve done without Richie’s killerclown tattoo—scary!). MANUEL: These fit, hung brunets were a welcome sight. Like several Brothel Boys scenes, though, this one was shot in cramped quarters (a narrow kitchen made to look like a locker room), which meant limited camera angles and unflattering lighting. And when you have a guy as good-looking as Richie, give him more face time. When he doesn’t have his back to the camera, Richie’s face is against the wall. Or buried in Brooks’ butt! ROD:
MANUEL:
and then turns the tables by fucking him. MANUEL: And his mastery of the flaccid cumshot. (Soft-serve, anyone?) Dear Diary offers a variety of types and a penchant for mild kink. While I THE OLDEST PROFESSION wasn’t attracted to anemic Paul Danny Starr in Escort Diaries Shayne (think Scooby-Doo’s Shaggy after a rough night of partying), I loved his eagerness to eat cute Jeremy Williams’ load, even wiping it up off the kitchen linoleum! ROD: This all-Brit movie is chock-full of rimming, not to mention those great accents. I mean, what gay man doesn’t love Cockney?
ROD:
