PEOPLE GET INTO DRAG FOR MANY REASONS. Some introverts create a character who’s larger than life. Others use it as a vehicle to launch their comedy. But for 26-year-old Shane Galligan, his drag alter ego Thorgy is more like unleashing a split personality. “It just comes out of me!” he explains. “Thorgy comes from my middle name, Thor. My grandfather is Thor and he married a Thora. We’re all eccentric! Thorgy is where my coocoo crazy eccentricity and love for fashion meet the stage.” An accomplished violinist by day, the Greenpoint resident created Thorgy (YouTube.com/ThorgyThorgy) seven years ago, but has recently garnered a local cult following at venues like Bar 4, Southpaw and Sugarland (where he performs every Wednesday and Sunday). His high-energy shows combine music, props, comedy, dance and current events into a unique theatric narrative. “This past month I’ve morphed from a fierce femme fatale to an angry pregnant mother to an old woman with a walker!” Thorgy’s sense of humor, positive outlook and willingness to try anything is refreshing in New York’s drag community—where one-upmanship and cutthroat cattiness seem routine—and has helped elevate his shows to performance art. “I have a lot of people come up to me and say, ‘You don’t just lip-sync a song—you put on a show! In my head, I’m just trying to merge hundreds of crazy ideas and end up with something quite different.” And big ideas Galligan has in droves: “I’d like to pitch Cafe Music with Thorgy. It’ll be a live music night and we’ll have string quartets, an Ethiopian choir and a xylophone player. It’s a tough night to pitch, but it’s in the works. or years, Sunday tea has been a hallmark of the gay party circuit, from Fire Island Pines to Hell’s Kitchen (home to Rooftop at Hudson Terrace, Summer Camp at High Bar and Confession at The Ritz). But who says the end of summer has to mean the end of tea? Certainly not 20-something promoters Brian Rafferty and Shawn Paul Mazur, who after a summer of getting boys in their skivvies as hosts of the Underwear Party at the High Tea Deck are looking to take a high-end, clothed approach to Sunday tea at swank Meatpacking gem The Griffin. We chatted with the over-the-top duo about their upscale party, their unpretentious vibe and their love of costumes.

How was it spending all summer throwing underwear parties? Shawn Paul Mazur: It was amazing. Hot Pines boys in their underwear with great music and tons of booze— what’s not to love? It started off in a small section of the High Tea Deck and became so popular that we had to move it inside to the Pavilion, which is at least double the size of the entire High Tea Deck. Any crazy stories? Brian Rafferty: Of course. But what happens on Fire Island stays on Fire Island. Sorry! Unless you get crabs. Those are coming back with you! Was the success of the Underwear Party the reason you decided do a party at The Griffin? BR: After finishing up an amazing summer on Fire Island

we wanted to keep the momentum going. Knowing that two of our favorite Sunday parties [Rooftop and Summer Camp] were finishing up for the season, we wanted to kick-start something new for the fall. So will it have a similar vibe to those parties? SPM: We want to create a fun, laid-back, unpretentious party that everyone can enjoy all within an upscale venue, with cheap drinks and great music. How did you score The Griffin? BR: The Griffin is the Meatpacking district’s newest and hottest venue that caters to celebs such as Katy Perry, Rihanna and Fergie. It’s located on 50 Gansevoort Street, steps from the Gansevoort Hotel, with interior décor inspired by the Gilded Age of the 19th century. It really is an amazing space and is a “virgin” to the gay scene. I’m really stoked to be able to show it to everyone. Rumor has it DJ Vito Fun will be spinning. BR: One of the most kick-ass parties of the summer was Vito Fun’s Middle Tea at the Pavilion. We want to bring the same type of music and energy to a venue in the city. Who else is involved with the party? BR: Eric Perman, Frankie Sharp, Ryan Sorkin, Jessica Resler, Michael Osterhout. We chose this group because we know that they will each bring their own unique style and brand of fun to the party because they’re each from a different aspect of the scene.
Why Sunday? BR: We knew that there wouldn’t be many earlier options on a Sunday for people to go out and party and any real New Yorker knows that Sundays are the best days in this city to have a good time! SPM: It’s early so you can come party, bring home a sexy trick and still wake up fresh/ready/laid for your 9-to-5 job. You guys are relatively new promoters on the scene. Do you think you have a fresh outlook on what works? SPM: It’s one thing to promote someone else’s event but starting your own and making it a success really relies on you and how much of your time you are willing to invest. It’s more then just Facebook invites and emails. I’m confidant that Griffin Sundays will bring something new to New York nightlife. So what does gay nightlife in New York need? BR:It needs to be exciting again. The current parties are great but I really think New Yorkers need more options. Personally, I would really like to see more of the downtown scene again. THERIGHTTRACK ontinuing our Fall Preview from last week, here are more releases ready to heat up our turntables in the coming months! Fresh off the presses is the surprise announcement that Rihanna’s new album—possibly called Cheers—is coming out in November. With RiRi being on tour, we were certain the album would be delayed until next year. But she heard our plea: please don’t stop the music! Thus, by the time you read this, her new song may have Rihanna already hit the radio (as we write this, Rihanna has tweeted Ryan Seacrest that she will be delivering him a new single in just a few days). Hopefully, the tone will be a lot more cheerful than her somber 2009 album, Rated R. Another diva with a surprise new album is Shakira. On sale November 2, Sale El Sol is her seventh studio album. Shakira says she’s gone back to her roots with this one, comparing it to her Oral Fixation era and reflecting influences from the Dominican Republic and Columbia. Will her hips lie? Also tipping in this November is Nelly with new CD 5.0. Duo singles “Tippin’ in Da Club” and “Just a Dream” are already impacting radio. Blazing hot “Tippin’” is admittedly a bit of a retread of his big 2002 hit “Hot in Herre,” while he surprises with “Dream,” a more laid-back track about love lost. There’s nothing lost with R&B soul man Seal on his new album, Seal 6: Commitment, out September 28. Mr. Heidi Klum commits to some serious emotion with the lead single, guitardriven mid-tempo “Secret.” Speaking of soul, as mentioned last week, Jamiroquai’s new album Rock Dust Light Star makes its space cowboy landing in November. Lead single “White Knuckle Ride”—which we love—already has a remixs by Seamus Haji, Monarchy and Penguin Prison, though they lay down some mellow knuckles instead of some big brass ones. But some deeper mixes are in order if it’s to have a fighting chance in clubs! Another of our fave British bands, The Ting Tings, release new single “Hands” on October 11, the first single off their forthcoming album (working title, Kunst). It might be us but we
thought “Kunst” was slang for Kirsten Dunst! And in a fun throwback to another Euro pop band, ’90s hitmakers Ace of Base return with new single “All for You.” The lineup may have changed—the two guys (Jonas Berggren and Ulf Ekberg) have stayed though their former leading ladies have left and been replaced by two new ones (Clara Hagman and Julia Williamson)—but that doesn’t mean the sound strays far from the tried-and-true. “All for You” is very reminiscent of their past singles (like “Beautiful Life”) with its poppy, Euro-synths and big melody. Cascada, we’re seeing the sign that you better watch your back! N

REEL LOVE THE ROMANTICS Time Investment: 95 min. Return on Investment: 78 min. hree otherwise annoying actresses (Katie Holmes, Anna Paquin and Malin Åkerman) come together quite harmoniously in the bizarrely fun and natural-feeling The Romantics (Paramount Famous Productions), an ’80s-style ensemble piece involving a lavish wedding party for an oblivious bride-tobe (Paquin), an unfaithful groom (the bland Josh Duhamel) and a maid of honor with a secret (Holmes, in her best role so far). The potential for soapiness is tempered by a smart, biting script and exciting acting all around, helmed by first-time director (and writer of the novel on which it is based) Galt Niederhoffer. The film certainly isn’t kidding about its inspiration; romanticism, poetry, crazy acts of love and passion are all present here in spades. So is a highly cringe-worthy wedding toast scene that stands up to a similarly marvelous moment in Rachel Getting Married. The weak link is definitely Duhamel, but perhaps it’s because his twotiming character is a total and utter jerkoff—one wonders what either of these women could possibly see in him. But that aside, Niederhoffer gets major points for creating a believable group of fun-loving friends, evidenced by the amazing ease and camaraderie between these actors, something not seen since The Breakfast Club. Åkerman is perfect as the resident party animal, and bit parts by Candice Bergen and Elijah Wood as the control-freak mother of the bride and the nuttiest friend in the bunch are delicious. Think of The Romantics as a sleeker update of St. Elmo’s Fire, for the “kids.” —Dan Heching

Return on Investment: 80 min. ike Pedro Almodóvar, French auteur François Ozon has a profound fascination for women and motherhood, as evidenced in his past hit 8 Women and in his new Hideaway (Le refuge) (Strand Releasing). Isabelle Carré’s refreshing performance as a drug addict who loses her boyfriend and then becomes an erratic, haywire would-be mother permeates the heart of the film, which showcases the actress during her real-life pregnancy. From the moment we see her, when she lies in a daze and we can’t tell if she is a man, woman or just a lump of clothing, she exudes a reluctance that is both perplexing and compelling: a reluctance to be a mother, to connect with the gay

brother of her dead boyfriend (the dreamy Louis-Ronan Choisy), a reluctance to even be a participatory character in the story. Why is it that seemingly only with French cinema does a main character win us over through this type of restraint? As opposed to American movies where everything eventually gets explained, and it ends up being just a “Julia Roberts movie,” here we never truly know what’s going on with our heroine. And Ozon’s tender, studied exploration of his characters is just as effective with men. Choisy, a singer making his screen debut, is captivating as the slightly-more-complicated-thanhe-looks companion to Carré’s brooding mother hen. Together, they even channel a bit (or a lot) of Bardot and Gainsbourg in the film’s beautiful title song. BY DAVID HURST he biggest surprise at this year’s Fringe Festival was Tom Jacobson’s extraordinary The Twentieth-Century Way. Reprising their roles from the world premiere at the Theater at Boston Court in Pasadena, Calif., the extremely talented Will Bradley and Robert Mammana portrayed two actors (and a dizzying array of associated characters) hired in 1914 by the Long Beach Police Department to entrap and arrest gay men at popular cruising spots. Instead of presenting this factually based material in a dry narrative or boring docudrama format, Jacobson envisions it as two actors showing up for an audition who then proceed to play mental games with each other for the next 90 minutes. Directed with style by Michael Michetti, Bradley and Mammana impressively change personas on a dime as Jacobson carefully lets the story unfold. The most disappointing entry at this year’s Fringe was Stan Richardson’s Veritas. In 1920, following the suicide of a Harvard student that revealed a hidden gay subculture at the school, administrators conducted a gay witch-hunt that resulted in the expulsion or firing of eight students, a recent graduate, an assistant professor and four men unaffiliated with the institution. Leaving shattered lives and at least two more suicides in its wake, “The Secret Court of 1920” was discovered and brought to light in 2002 by an enterprising student reporter. Veritas starts off well, and you can’t fault the talented actors, but the choices Richardson and director Ryan J. Davis make in telling this story don’t do justice to the material. We’ll have to wait for Tony Speciale’s take on the same story, entitled Unnatural Acts and developed at Columbia University as “The Harvard Project,” which will be staged at Classic Stage Company next June. In an ironic twist, Richardson and Speciale had been collaborating together on this subject matter several years ago before they went their own ways. Let’s hope Speciale’s version is more worthy of dramatization.

And, finally, definitive proof that there’s nothing more excruciating than watching talented actors floundering in a terrible play exists in It Must Be Him, a vile vanity production penned by Kenny Solms. Not even an outrageous musical S&M number can salvage this stultifying “comedy” about a self-loathing gay writer whose life is falling apart, though everyone loves him anyway. ith its cellar entrance, Bar Henry is a little hard to pick out, but thanks to the newly installed brightred awning announcing “Bistro,” the challenge is somewhat diminished. This is a great neighborhood place with a wonderful bar and the whole thing feels like it’s been a comfortable friend forever. The red velvet banquet chairs in the dining room were plucked from the old days at the Plaza and lend a certain ragtag grandeur to the proceedings with hardly a vestige of the smoke-filled Zinc Bar that formerly occupied the space. We grew readily accustomed to the Henry Dog Cocktail ($14), with Tito’s vodka, dry and sweet vermouth, and cherries soaked in brandy, before moving on to some wine from their extensive list—and take note, most labels may be sampled as half bottles as well. As we sipped on an Australian Betts & Scholl Riesling ($49/bottle, $25/half bottle) we slurped down a few Oysters ($2.50) with an excellent ginger cocktail sauce: the Beau Soleils were like velvet brine, while the Malpecs had a fuller flavor. Endive Salad ($8) was perfect for summer, with a fine balance of watermelon, feta cheese, almonds for crunch and a pure lavender vinaigrette. Organic Bedeviled Eggs ($5) weren’t hard to take either, with a fair balance of paprika and truffle oil. Earthy Chicken Liver Mousse ($11) was creamy, served with raspberries and a chiffonade of chopped dates. Short Rib Tacos ($12) wrapped in corn tortillas stopped the show—how toothsome and delicious! Naturally with our entrées, more wine followed. The Austrian Nigl Sauvignon Blanc ($68/bottle, $34/half bottle) was most unusual, with a flinty hint of asphalt and a taste of gooseberries flocking to the palate. Chicken Under a Brick ($19) is an absolute must, with wilted kale and lemon pan jus. We found the Branzino ($25), a special of the night, to be wonderful, with crispy skin and a frizzle of leeks on a healthy bed of corn, tomatoes, squash, shallots, epazote and a bit of butter thrown in for good measure. When it comes to neighborhood dining, the bar has indeed been raised! N

ROBIN REARDON TALKS STRAIGHT hen asked whether her new work, A Question of Manhood, out this month from Kensington, was inspired by the outrage that led to her previous novel’s dissection of ex-gay ministries (2008’s Thinking Straight), young adult writer Robin Reardon considers briefly before deadpanning: “I think it was more inspired by Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer, than anything else.” Well, you know gay men and their dogs. In fact, A Question of Manhood focused on both dogs and the tensley nuanced dynamic between gay and straight men via a delinquent straight male protagonist who must choose between his homophobic friends and a new, masterful gay dog-trainer at his father’s pet store. “I’ve seen bigoted men react to gays like pack animals,” Reardon says. “They’re not sure what to do, so they attack.” Another twist is that the story is set in 1971, and the main character’s older brother confided his own homosexual leanings before being killed in action in Vietnam. The staples of Reardon’s fiction are on display more strongly than ever: sarcastic protagonists with inner conflicts, unapologetic gay romance, addictive cliffhanger drama and an upbeat but realistic ending. Reardon’s career thus far places her proudly in the tradition of women writers who depict gay male relationships with unabashed sensuality (consider Patricia Nell Warren’s The Front Runner and Mary Renault’s The Persian Boy, both staples of any serious rainbow bookshelf )—but out of the vein of those serious “literary” authors who feel the need to punish their gay characters with tragic story arcs. “I suppose I should come out as straight,” jokes Reardon, a married Boston-based writer whose breakout title, 2007’s A Secret Edge, began with its athletic protagonist’s homoerotic wet dream. Never shying away from sexual content, she finds herself in a unique position with her publisher—the books are marketed to adults because of their matter-of-fact content before being discovered by the precocious teens at whom they are aimed. “I know what it feels like to want a man,” Reardon explains. “Sex is very different for teen boys than for teen girls—and I wish someone would get that through to teen girls! If [my work] is going to be at all realistic, it has to include the sex.” Reardon, whose website features a witty, combative

dismantling of classic anti-gay arguments entitled The Case for Acceptance, makes no bones about the fiercely pro-tolerance agenda informing her work. “If you want to be a reptile, go back to the swamp—just get out of the voting booth!” Young adult fiction is an ideal platform for Reardon’s ideas because, as she acknowledges, “It’s harder to change the mind of a 40-year-old.” Reardon’s activist tendency finds its expression on the page, but it would be a mistake to call it limited—and her latest novel is another reminder that words on a page can be more far reaching than those spoken through any megaphone. ROD: Disc Two’s opening recap of the action was so hot, I popped Disc One back in before watching the rest of Brandon and Josh’s saga. I mean, we already know neither of these smooth, oversexed Euroboys has the ability to stay faithful. With guys like blond Troy Allen floating in the pool and showing off their perfect asses, who would? MANUEl: I couldn’t get past Allen’s Shirley Temple hair, but his three-cumshot poolside fuck with Joel D’Amici was just a warm-up for the pièce de résistance. ROD: A four-way and a five-way!
