1. The M101…101 ways to die! Last year, the M101 was the bus to avoid getting on or in front of—it crashed 268 times on its 12-mile route between Washington Heights and the East Village, according to the New York Post. 2. Don’t get any bright ideas but… according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics, about one in ten sexually active New York high schoolers have had at least one partner of the same sex. 3. LADY GAGA and ELTON JOHN are teaming up for a duet called “Hello, Hello” that’ll be available on the soundtrack to the upcoming Disney film Gnomeo and Juliet. Will they give us a music video too?!? 14 OCTOBER 29, 2010

4. Long Island just got a little farther away: the LIRR announced that they’d be jacking up the prices for booze sold onboard starting in 2011. 5. MADONNA will be opening danceoriented Hard Candy Fitness Centers around the world, the first in November in Mexico City. 6. Bed bugs be damned! A new Marist College Institute for Public Opinion poll revealed that 84% of New Yorkers are “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with life in the Big Apple. 7. American Apparel has donated 500 “LEGALIZE GAY” T-SHIRTS to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater after an on-campus hate-crime last week.

8. The cast of Jersey Shore actually did some good for the world this week! JWoww announced that her “couture” line was stopping production and VINNY spoke out against anti-gay bullying in schools. 9. Madison Square Park’s yearly makeover is here! Stop by to check out Jim Campbell’s “Scattered Light,” featuring 80 feet of 2000 LED lights in the shape of human silhouettes. Hello, date-night stroll! 10. Most in need of a drink? YOU— standing around in a wacky Halloween costume! So, Happy Halloween— make it a Devil’s Punch: tequila, Triple Sec, limoncello, sour mix and a touch of OJ.

GETTING

PERSONAL WITH... <<< GUSTY WINDS

It seemed only right to profile Gusty Winds in our Halloween issue: Not only does she scare small children, but she was “born” on the holiday. “A bunch of us started on Halloween and then it turned into a once-a-month thing,” she says. “My first performance was at the old Rome Bar in Chelsea.” The Rubenesque queen moved on to Urge, The Hangar Bar and Barracuda and currently haunts Cherry Grove, Lips and Posh’s Monday-night Bingo Bake. We stole her stash of candy and got Gusty to blow in our ear.—Dan Avery

YOUR WORST GAY NIGHTMARE We asked our readers to submit the most terrifying true tales of gay life gone bad, and boy, did you have some frights to share. Next Magazine and Gaydar.net want to warn you of the evils lurking behind every corner of gay New York. Bat-shit-crazy bigots, horrifying hookups and suspenseful sex romps are often a frighteningly real part of our everyday lives. So many readers were dying to tell us about their personal poltergeist; unfortunately we could only pick the five scariest stories to illustrate for you, our loyal, but vulnerable reader. Our grand-prize winner (announced at our issue launch party on October 28) will receive the ultimate intervention—a three-year membership to Gaydar.net, where thousands of friendly boys are eager to alleviate any frights our city has haunted them with. So take a look, if you dare. Because this haunted house of homo horrors is all too real—and could happen to you!

WHAT LIES BENEATH MY BED MOVING MEANT GETTING RID OF MY STUFF. After posting many items on Craigslist, I found a buyer for my bed. A timid woman in her 50s with a cross around her neck arrived at my apartment. The bed was intended for her daughter at a Christian school. After settling on a price, I offered to carry the bed out to her truck. As we lifted the box springs from the frame I realized I had forgotten to clear out some items from under the bed that my God-fearing customer immediately saw: lube, condoms, Fleshlight, handcuffs, a book of gay sex positions. My conservative college-mom immediately morphed from friendly to frightened! —J.D., Hell’s Kitchen TIMID WOMAN: Do your best to shock lesbian pornographer Jincey Lumpkin. INVASION OF THE AUTO SNATCHERS IT WAS HALLOWEEN AND MY GROUP OF GAYS decided to dress in drag. We’re at a party when my friend says to me, “Hey, Brian? Isn’t that your car coming towards us?” My car was stolen! I had to talk to the cops in my wig, skirt and high heels, drunk and dying from embarrassment. They said they’d call if they found anything so we went to the club. While dancing I get a call that my car has been found, abandoned. I said, “Can I come in a few hours? I’m kinda busy.” —Brian, Lower East Side COP: DJ Tracey Young arrests you with her world-famous beats at Showboat’s Club Worship on October 30, part of the Out in AC weekend. THE NIGHT I DIDN’T LOCK MY DOOR IT WAS A WARM SUMMER NIGHT and I was visiting my parents. I had gone out with friends and tied a few on. I also was very horny and needed to get off. It was late and no one was awake, so I went into my bedroom, shut the door and started to get comfortable. I took off my shirt, took my boxer briefs down to my ankles and got down to business. The next morning my mother woke me up, boxers still at my ankles, shirt still off. I had passed out playing with myself! —Michael, Hell’s Kitchen MOTHER: Stella D’oro is the Queen Mum of Project Achieve and the NYC HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Visit ProjectAchieve.org for more info. THE STALKER OF CHELSEA A FEW YEARS AGO I MADE MY FIRST attempt at drag by entering a talent contest at Xes. Afterwards an older gentleman struck up a conversation with me realizing I had performed earlier. When I decide to leave he follows me, saying he wants to make sure I get home okay. He tells me he only dates drag queens and how one of his past lovers was killed by the mafia. I end up walking 20 blocks past my building to try and get rid of him. Eventually he hops on the train alone and I make a mad dash to my place looking back every block to make sure [I’m not] being followed. —Marti, Harlem DRAG SHOW CONTESTANT: Stalk Busted every Tuesday at Barracuda. IT CAME FROM THE DEEP I BOUGHT DINNER FOR THIS CUTE DUDE I met by chance on the street, then took him back to my Wall Street hotel for some action. Immediately, he wanted to deep throat me. Within ten seconds, he gagged and vomited his chicken paillard, spinach, creamed corn and two glasses of Riesling into my pubic hair. Apologetic and still reeking of puke, he tried to kiss me as he left, but I demurred. The hotel room stank for hours afterward. —William, Financial District BUSINESSMAN: Get down to business with porn star Ben Andrews. Follow him on Twitter @BenAndrewsNYC. NIGHTLIFE

The Very Gay ’90s A LOOK BACK AT NEW YORK GAY NIGHTLIFE IN THE 1990S hile no one could have predicted exactly how the gay community would evolve through the ’90s, a few things were certain as the decade first hatched: We were more than relieved to see the ’80s come to a close, determined to become visible and leave our stamp on culture, cautiously optimistic that our efforts to support LGBT Americans would become a more universal initiative, and (of course) ready to let our hair down in celebration of who we really were. It was an incredible era for gay life. Looking back on the cultural milestones, it’s mind-blowing, really. Tony Kushner’s Angels in America premiered in 1991. MTV’s first season of The Real World aired in 1992. (Its third, featuring AIDS activist Pedro Zamora, aired in 1994.) Philadelphia hit cinemas in 1993. Rent captivated the theater world in 1996. Ellen DeGeneres came out on Ellen in 1997, followed by Will & Grace in ’98. The AIDS crisis had finally begun to register as a human disease, inspiring gay and straight citizens to come together to confront the epidemic and their differences. Here in New York, the crescendo of a new “gay normal” was exhilarating, and despite Mayor Giuliani’s efforts to sanitize the city for tourists, diverse businesses and nightspots popped up around town to cater to ever more diverse queer tastes. Christopher Street’s mainstays remained as

rocking as they had been, but the Chelsea scene (and look) started catching on, with Eighth Avenue declaring itself the world’s premiere gay drag. All the while, supersized nightclubs—Roxy, Palladium, Club USA, Twilo, Limelight, Tunnel, etc.—hosted shirtless bacchanalian, as famous for the notorious partying as they were for their world-class sound systems and soughtafter DJ sets. Not to be ignored, of course, is the fact that the HIV/AIDS epidemic continued to wreak havoc in the community for much of the decade. The protease inhibitors that keep so many alive today weren’t available until the mid-’90s, and we lost many brave brothers and sisters along the way. Pride parades in New York and across the world were not only declarations of sexual freedom, but rallying cries to promote safer sex and eulogize those we had lost to the disease. It was intense and emotional, and felt like all we could do. Bob Pontarelli—one half of the team behind Barracuda, Elmo, the forthcoming Industry, and departed hotspots Crowbar and restaurant Leshko’s—recalls that the bars and clubs of the day where gays came to commune and channel their passion into a fun and full life. “Anyone who was at Crowbar for the nights like 1984, Crisco Disco or Star Search knew you could completely let go and celebrate,” he remembers. “Nightlife was vital again.

Going out was what everyone did. Although the options were incredibly diverse, nightlife itself became integral to who we were.” N

MEMORY LANE BAR AND CLUB PIONEERS RELIVE SOME OF THEIR FAVORITE MOMENTS. “as a 21 Year-OLD trYING tO cOMe OUt in Toronto, in 1980, I was clueless and didn’t even know where to begin. Fortunately I met a man who, sensing my helplessness, invited me to join the gay softball league. Our team went to Milwaukee to play in a tournament where a certain third basemen for the Eagle NYC team lured me to the Big Apple. Newly out and very inexperienced I felt suprisingly safe at the Eagle. The hot leather and Levis-clad guys looked formidable and unapproachable but that was the furthest thing from the truth. They turned out to be really nice guys who just happened to be very kinky. The Eagle helped me to redefine what I thought about being gay, that being different was not only accepted but encouraged.” —Derek Danton, Eagle NYC owner

The Puppini Sisters

The Right Track Another group covering Carey’s classic is the Andrew Sisters-inspired The Puppini Sisters on their new holiday collection Christmas with The Puppini Sisters. While less successful than Lady Antebellum’s version, the trio’s rendition of “All I Want” starts slow before launching into a New Orleans-infused jazz -meets-doo-wop adaptation. Their ’40s styling does more justice on Elton John’s “Step into Christmas,” big band-y “Let It Snow,” and the as-sultry-as-ever “Santa Baby.” While the Puppini album is more holiday treat than lumps of coal, it’s Mariah Carey who steals the spotlight on Santa’s “Nice” list this year! N

By Keo Nozari hristmastime is almost here, and thankfully Mariah Carey has taken a holiday from the ghetto tracks that have dominated her last few lackluster albums to deliver Merry Christmas II You. A worthy and celebratory sequel to her 1994 classic, Merry Christmas, it’s a Mariah Carey welcome return to form, putting the emphasis back on her amazing vocals and creating a classy collection that’s easily on par with its predecessor. It’s everything we’ve loved about Carey—her stellar pipes, the gospel-inspired background vocals, the big, soaring moments. Fans of her early days will not be disappointed! In addition to coproducing the album, Carey co-wrote five of the album’s songs including lead single, “Oh Santa!” But the album leans more on traditional holiday fare with lush, fabulous renditions of “The First Noël/Born is the King Interlude,”“Charlie Brown Christmas” and “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus,” a spirited duet with her mother, Patricia Carey. The album’s utter stroke of genius, however, might be Carey’s version of the New Year’s anthem “Auld Lang Syne.” After all, there aren’t many good renditions of the staple. Carey’s may easily become the “go-to” mix for DJs and households alike as the clock strikes midnight in years to come. For safe measure, the album does include two songs off Carey’s previous Christmas effort: “O Holy Night,” presented here in a stunning live rendition recorded in a Los Angeles church, and, of course, the now-standard “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” this time “Extra Festive.”The latter is said to be “re-recorded,” but it really just seems like a slight remix with a new intro. Our only real critique is that we would’ve loved to have Carey re-do “All I Want for Christmas Is You” in a totally new fashion. An example being the breathtaking new version by Lady Antebellum where they transform the song into a heartfelt ballad. We love!

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake

Curtain Up A Life in the Theatre Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson

Bourne’s love affair—and tragic conclusion—between a handsome Prince (Simon Williams) and a male Swan/Stranger (Jonathan Ollivier) resonated deeply for men struggling to survive an epidemic for which none of us was prepared. More than a decade later, it is as heartbreakingly bittersweet as ever. N

By David Hurst hoever thought film and television stars Patrick Stewart and T.R. Knight together on a Broadway stage in David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre was a surefire, can’t-miss, million-dollar idea was wrong on all counts. With leaden pacing, flaccid direction and woeful miscasting where Stewart is concerned, Mamet’s charming love letter to his early days as an actor has been turned into a slow boat to China with no stops to disembark along the way. Knight, who was a struggling New York actor scraping by with a couple of Broadway credits under his belt until Grey’s Anatomy turned him into a star (and forced him out of the closet!), is perfectly fine as John, but Stewart seems out of sorts, uncomfortable and a little out of his element as Robert. Despite rave reviews by the majority of the mainstream press, it remains impossible for me to excuse the vile homophobia that permeates Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, the new musical that recently moved to Broadway written and directed by Alex Timbers (who is straight) with a score by Michael Friedman (an out composer). A satirical send-up of the seventh president and his attendant controversies (slavery, American Indians, etc.) that plays like a dreary, extended Saturday Night Live skit with an emo-rock score, Timbers’ sophomoric book continually and mercilessly uses the stereotype of effete gayness as its punching bag, leaving straight audiences content to laugh and giggle, completely oblivious to the subconscious and time-worn homophobia that such humor promotes and ingrains. Not seen in New York since its Tony-winning run on Broadway in 1998, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake is back for a limited run (through Nov 7) at New York City Center and it’s more amazing than ever. The staging gorgeous, the movement thrilling, this Swan Lake remains a triumph of imagination and creativity, with its sexy, unbridled homoeroticism front and center. Twelve years ago New York was reaching the apex of the AIDS crisis and

MAGNETIC PERSONALITY THE NEW FILM STRANGE POWERS ATTEMPTS TO CHRONICLE THE ABSORBING GENIUS OF OUT COMPOSER/LYRICIST STEPHIN MERRITT

he Magnetic Fields’ front man, Stephin Merritt, is almost synonymous with Manhattan’s East Village— where his instrument-riddled home studio and known hangouts are based—so it’s quite a shocker, especially for his longtime collaborator/manager/BFF Claudia Gonson, when he picks up and moves west to Los Angeles in the new documentary, Strange Powers. Reaching him at a 310 exchange via telephone, what the what, I ask. Actually, it’s much ado about nothing, he informs me. Merritt still spends almost half of the year living in New York, and will be back in Gotham for Strange Powers’ Film Forum engagement. “I only spend a few more days in L.A. [than New York each year],” he explains, “so I can maintain my California citizenship. All the footage of my making Distortion is after my so-called move to L.A. Dramatic license.” This is one of many liberties that directors Kerthy Fix and Gail O’Hara take in their consistently engaging documentary about Merritt’s work with alt-pop icons The Magnetic Fields, a band probably best known for 1999’s three-disc 69 Love Songs, which traversed almost every genre of popular music. “The Japanese label insisted on bonus tracks,” he recalls in his carefully measured, deep-voiced register. “Specifically, two bonus tracks. There are some principles for which I am willing to give up my entire Japanese career and that’s definitely among the highest. It would have been kind of fun if they wanted thirtyone bonus tracks. I probably would have considered doing thirty-one bonus tracks, but not two. What would you do for the album cover?” In Strange Powers a number of luminaries, including Peter Gabriel and author Neil Gaiman, chime in about Merritt’s work and status as one of our most important and wry modern composers/lyricists (his beloved Chihuahua, Irving, is named after Irving Berlin). Getting past an exterior that some regard as prickly (noted also in the press release), Fix and O’Hara delve

into Merritt’s background, from his complete lack of a relationship with his folk-singer father, Scott Fagan, to his friendship with Gonson; his work as a music journalist (O’Hara served as his former editor at Spin Magazine and Time Out New York); the formation of the Fields and their music; and his songwriting process, which typically takes place while hanging out in gay bars (he’s seen at one point entering Christopher Street bear bar, Ty’s). However, his musical endeavors outside of the Fields—including bands Future Bible Heroes, The Gothic Archies, The Three Terrors, and The 6ths, and film/theater scores—fall almost completely by the wayside (the filmmakers’ decision), as does his love life (Merritt’s decision) and inside involvement with New York’s nightlife scene. In 2005 he created and ran Runt, a weekly party for short gays and their admirers (Merritt measures at 5’3”) at Nowhere bar. “Runt lasted for a little over a year,” he says, “and it got too popular, which made it too loud for me, and then the bar manager decided she wanted to take it over because it was popular, not realizing that it was popular because she hadn’t taken it over. She wanted to make it an R&B night. I said no way. That was the end of my participation. I think actually at the end it was more popular than Big Lug, which had been taken elsewhere at that point.” Merritt, who recently won an Obie for his music/lyrics in 2009’s Off-Broadway’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline, currently has no solid plans to begin another party or event on either coast, but confesses to at least a concept for one. “I’ve thought of Quiet Night with no music,” he says. “Just the ice machine. I was thinking you could amplify the ice machine and every time some ice falls you hear a trail for several minutes through analog delay.” N Strange Powers in now playing at Film Forum. Merritt will be present for a Q&A at the 8:10pm screening on October 29. Visit StrangePowersFilm.com for more info.

WAR OF THE WORLDS Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able in Monsters

Reel Love Monsters

Waste Land Time Investment: 98 min. Return on Investment: 88 min.

Time Investment: 93 min. Return on Investment: 90 min. merica is different looking from the outside,” says photojournalist Andrew Kaulder (Scoot McNairy) as he stands outside the massive wall erected on the Mexican border to protect America in Gareth Edwards’ moody and delicately crafted special effects extravaganza, Monsters (Magnet). He’s speaking to his travel companion, Sam Wynden (Whitney Able). She’s the daughter of Andrew’s boss, who’s instructed him to return Sam back to the States and into the arms of her fiancé. In Edwards’ alternate reality, a space probe has brought alien life to Earth, and it’s manifested itself in the northern half of Mexico, or what is better known as The Infected Zone. It is through this desolate land of bombed towns and wreckage-strewn mountains that Andrew and Sam are forced to make the dangerous journey home. A metaphor for immigration, war, natural disaster and American aggression, Monsters takes its cues from Jurassic Park and other SFX-laden creature features, and gives it the intimacy of the lowest-budget mumblecore (Edwards has claimed a budget of only $15,000). Sure, comparisons will be made to the vérité-style, effects-carried District 9, but Monsters lacks 9’s humor and action. Instead it feels more like a romantic drama, a tale of souls lost in a strange, venerable new world of Edwards’ immaculate creation and artful creation. —Benjamin Solomon

he parallels of poverty and wealth, garbage and art come into stark and brilliant relief in Waste Land (Arthouse Films), an earnest documentary covering Brazilian artist Vik Muniz’ journey into the slums of Rio de Janeiro’s Jardin Gramacho, the largest garbage dump in the world. Why does this teddy bear-ish, cute, Brooklyn-based artist venture into the nexus of poverty in his home country? In candid interview excerpts, he states his desire for his art to do something more than just look good, or make a profit. It might seem trite or quaint, but what Muniz (and this film) ultimately accomplish is nothing at all to scoff at.

T

ONE MAN’S TRASH Vik Muniz and Magna in Waste Land

The people Muniz meets in the dump are called catadores, self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. They amble and hop around the piles of filth like hobbits or herd animals, expertly grabbing plastics, metals or the like while avoiding all manner of unspeakable waste. Muniz’s hope is to somehow create art for, with, or about these people, in order to ultimately give back to their community. After telling of the abuse, disease, death and all other impossible measures of suffering these poorest of the poor have endured, they in turn begin helping the artist and his team create some surprisingly insightful and deeply moving art pieces. Much like the pieces themselves, the film crystallizes into an unexpectedly refined expression of beauty, quite literally from a pile of shit. With an airy, moving scoreby Moby. —Dan Heching

By Peter Sherwood hile Pichet Ong’s Spot has the subheading of “dessert bar,” we stopped in for a somewhat more savory brunch—although we did have our share of sweets. Goodness knows there are enough of them to choose from on Ong’s cleverly curated menu created from a host of Asian inspirations. My fella and I ordered a strong, full-bodied Iced Americano ($3.95) to get us going as Spot currently lacks a liquor license. A steaming-hot, flaky Chocolate Croissant ($2.75) was a natural accompaniment and we slathered it with a most delectable honey butter, the balance of which we wanted to put in our pockets to eat later in the privacy of our own home. We then settled into the more lunch part of brunch with a Roasted Yellow Beet Salad ($7), quite delicious with arugula and a pat of goat cheese in a fine citrus vinaigrette. We loved the vibrant, deep orange color of the fish in our Smoked Salmon Sandwich ($7.50) with sliced tomatoes and horseradish cream served on a toasty baguette. The Prosciutto Gruyere Sandwich ($7.50) was yummy too, with a reasonable douse of extra virgin olive oil. We ventured back to breakfast with Crispy Nutella Waffles ($5). Since we cling to anything served with Nutella and/or topped with a macerated mash of mixed berries, this suited us very nicely. Cue the desserts! From a considerable list of Seasonal Dessert Tapas, we narrowed it down to five offerings for $35.95. We were compelled to try the Ovaltine & Malt Roll, an odd-sounding pairing of Rice Crispies and kabocha squash, but it worked out quite well. Mont Blanc Alaska featured chocolate, caramel, spiced pears and a chestnut meringue; and Satay Peanut Cream was like a do-it-yourself PBB&J with Concord grape sorbet and delicious, confounding bacon toast! Un-Red Velvet Cake featured a wry use of beets with transporting cream cheese ice cream. To wrap up before the inevitable sugar crash, we cherished the White Miso Semifreddo with raspberry sorbet, candied sesame and walnut soil clustered around extraordinary olive oil cake. All one needs is olive oil cake. N

BETTER OFF BLUE-BALLED

ADULT

ROD: Was it just me or did it seem like this movie was edited with a butcher knife? MANUEL: Rod, everything about this joint was ghet-TO. Eleven Detroit brothas with names like DNice and MagXL talking shit, getting busy in the projects, music blaring so the neighbors don’t hear—somehow it all works. ROD: These are some of the ugliest apartments ever. Someone should combine thug porn with home makeover shows and start a whole new genre! MANUEL: Call it “Pimp My Pimp”! The first contestant should be straight muscle guy Tre, whose tiny cinderblock bedroom looks like a jail cell. Along with a velvet

painting of a panther, he has two fulllength mirrors set up so he can watch himself work out then jerk off to straight porn. This alpha male got so worked up admiring himself, he actually beat his chest like a silverback staking its territory. ROD: I’m not a fan of solos. Jerking your own is a waste of dick when there are so many other guys around. But if getting to the three-way meant watching them, that’s okay by me. MANUEL: My favorite was MagXL raping the willing Kin, a fit bottom with beautiful eyelashes who takes big dick like a trooper. The best dialogue goes to Tone. After Dash has been trying so hard to suck some wood into Tone’s dick, Tone says, “This mothafucka’s dead, dawg. I was growin’ better without the head!” Ouch!

Getting Ahead In Business (UK Naked Men/Pacific Sun, PacificSunEntertainment.com, UKNakedMen.com)

G

ot a thing for horny businessmen, neckties, dress socks and garters? This movie will, um, suit you just fine!

ROD: God, Pacific Sun is versatile. They go from black brothas to British businessmen without missing a beat(off ). MANUEL: PS distributes movies from over 35 studios. Their website lets you browse DVDs by category: Bears, Bodies, Boys, Blacks. For this UKNM title, they needed a category called “Business Suit Fetish.” ROD: The whole point of all the suits is to get them off. Ross Hurston and coverguy Dillon Buck roll around on the lawn fully dressed in the pouring rain before stripping naked. Rain wasn’t the only thing making them wet. MANUEL: Grass-covered outdoor sex during a sun-shower was a first for me.

HOW TO SUCK-SEED Lucas Knowles in Getting Ahead In Business

Hurston’s enormous load all over Buck’s left foot was impressive, but it was outdone by bearded hottie Lucas Knowles’ long, thick moneyshot across the chest of Darren Robbins, whom he’d kidnapped, blindfolded with a necktie and fucked with a truncheon. ROD: Hurston returns later as a messenger stopping by Kurt Rogers’ office in leather delivery drag to drag Rogers’ clothes off him. Hurston gets his ass eaten and rides sexy bald Rogers’ huge cock all over his Ikea furniture. MANUEL: My favorites were Jed Wilcox and beefy brunet Toby Park (imagine Arpad Miklos as a young, smooth bottom) getting naughty in the storeroom. ROD: Wilcox goes trolling through the warehouse shelves and finds a hottie waiting to get his ass eaten and his dick sucked. Never happens to me at Costco.
