Hungry after a little cruise though Central Park? There’s an app for that! Free on the iPhone, CITYMINT uses GPS to offer Central Park “sunflowers” free delivery between noon and 7pm (till Labor day) from seven different restaurants around the park! 3. Fab abs! A recently passed bill en route to Governor Paterson’s desk would enable the State Liquor Authority to shut down nightspots if police are called six times within 60 days to quell rowdy behavior. 10. Most in need of a drink? MAYOR BLOOMBERG, who reignited his push to ban smoking from city parks. Make it a Manhattan—he does know who lives here, right? 10 JULY 16, 2010

New York personality Marti Gould Cummings doesn’t do drag per se. He’s more of an androgynous gender-bender with a hard-on for the Great White Way. In Take the Mic at Dixon Place he scouts for fresh talent, while his online series, Broadway Speaks Out!, sees stars like Liza Minnelli and Gavin Creel talking about LGBT equality. NOW

THE GAY AGENDA

14 JULY 16, 2010

WITH THE ONSLAUGHT OF NEW CABARET ACTS fronted by burgeoning gay Broadway stars, gay Glee-wannabes and gay musical-theater fanatics it’s hard to be gay and stand out in the crowd. But for geek-ish musicians Nicholas Williams and Micah Bucey, going gay was the only thing to do with their Smothers Brothers-influenced cabaret act. “Our goal is to take over the world through show tunes, so I can’t imagine calling ourselves anything else,” declares the rubberfaced Bucey, 30, who by day is studying for his Masters of Divinity degree at New York Theological Seminary. So with tongue firmly planted in cheek they named their band The Gay Agenda (ThatGayAgendaBand.WordPress.com) and have been performing their snarky original songs and mini-musicals (covering everything from Disney to the Virgin Mary) in sold-out shows at La MaMa ETC, Joe’s Pub and the Players Loft for the past two years. “I had always been interested in having a band of some sort,” says pianist and “straight” man Williams, 30, who also works as a music teacher. “But with Micah’s more inherent theatrical sensibilities and our mutual interest in musical theater, the band has become more of a hybrid comedy-theater-musical experience.” Lately the duo has been grabbing people’s attention, with their popular YouTube videos and a residency at Ars Nova. (They will be returning to Joe’s Pub on August 26—as Bucey flirts: “We might take our shirts off and we’ve been working out!”) And big things can be expected from these boys. “I’ve always wanted to write Broadway musicals, and I think we’re heading in the same direction together,” says Williams. “In 20 years, I think we’ll finally have a show starring Laura Bell Bundy running on the Great White Way. But maybe that’ll be the third or fourth one to have made it there.” —Benjamin Solomon

THE CRAZY MIXED-UP TOTALLY TRUE TALE OF

THE CASTLE ON FIRE ISLAND don’t you dare Call it liBeraCe’s Bathhouse or a haunted mansion. FOR CHERRY GROVE’S MAGICAL VENETIAN PALACE, THE BELVEDERE, is at the very Core of what makes fire island speCial. STORY BY BRIAN O’BRIEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILSONMODELS

W

hen taking the ferry from Sayville to Cherry Grove there is always that magical instant when, to the left of the boat, a bright light starts to come into focus. As you get closer, a white palace starts to solidify on the horizon. A glow in the distance, it looks like a magical realm, a place completely out of the ordinary, where unexplainable things happen. Of course this is the Belvedere, Fire Island’s storied all-male guest house. And anyone who has stayed here over its long history can tell you that magical things do indeed happen. But the history of this building on the bay, built and expanded to look like a Venetian castle, isn’t a simple fairy tale full of happy-ever-afters. Destruction, disrepair, and lots and lots of parties are also woven into the story. Once upon a time in the 1950s, John Eberhardt built the Belvedere as a private residence. He was a gay scenic artist who painted sets for TV and theatrical productions in New York. Like many gay men in his social circle, most of them professionals and many active in the city’s theater scene, he started going to Fire Island and camping on the beach before there was much there but woods and deer. Also involved in real estate projects in New York and New Jersey, Eberhardt decided to build a place for himself on the island and chose to do it in an ornate Venetian style. “It’s just my style I guess, and it seemed right,” says Eberhardt, now 88, from his home in Florida, where he currently spends most of his time. His house, though spectacular, wasn’t as large as the current incarnation and included just the main house where visitors now enter, with its large living room, residential quarters and rooms on both floors. In the Spring of 1956, right after the completion of Eberhardt’s house, the only hotel in town, Duffy’s, burned to the ground. Eberhardt decided to open up his home to guests, renting out the empty bedrooms to strangers. This was a very informal arrangement, with visitors checking in at his kitchen table. “It was more of a house party sort of thing,” Eberhardt says about the early days, when he was also building a score of rental houses in the neighborhood. “The people who stayed all

16 JULY 16, 2010

became friends of course, and many of them live in Florida. I see them now and they talk about the old days and what fun they had.” Duffy’s was rebuilt as the Ice Palace, which was, according to some, the first disco in America. But even then, Eberhardt says it was a more innocent place. “It seemed more conservative in the old days,” he says of the gay enclave’s nightlife scene. “There were so many rowdy people in the disco business and all the boys used to dance together, but the management would insist on having a girl nearby. Now it’s much merrier.” Outside of the disco antics, most of the shenanigans happened at house parties, and each of the houses had a different theme for their party. In keeping with his décor, Eberhardt’s parties were usually Renaissance or Roman. Lanterns and candles lighted most of these soirées, because the island still didn’t have electricity.

“Craig, John’s long-time partner and adopted son…first saw the Belvedere in 1980. he was staying in the pines and asked a friend what it was. ‘SOME OLD MAN LIVES THERE, AND HE’S BEEN HAULING JUNK OUT THERE HIS WHOLE LIFE,’ THE FRIEND SAID.” “The boardwalks were quite dark,” Eberhardt recalls. “We had a generator in the house for lights in the hallways. It was important to have [so people could] find their way around the corridors. But the generators went off at 12 or so. If you came in later, you had to stumble around in the dark to find your way back to your room—or any room, for that matter.” Things stayed pretty quiet at Belvedere through the ’70s, when the scene—and the gay scene in particular—on Fire Island started to heat up. Craig Eberhardt, John’s long-time partner and adopted son (adoption was something gay couples often did in the days before civil unions, because it was the only

relationship they could enter that was legally binding and recognized by the government), first saw the Belvedere in 1980. He was staying in The Pines and walked by the place and asked a friend what it was. “Some old man lives there, and he’s been hauling junk out there his whole life,” the friend said. “I first met John at a bar in New York and went home with him,” Craig says. “He invited me out to stay with him on the island, and when I got there, lo and behold, it was the Belvedere.” After staying there the first time, Craig didn’t leave for 13 years. A master carpenter, Craig helped John usher in the establishment’s second life. Together they added a pool and Jacuzzi area and started to add on to the house, annexing the buildings next door (which John also owned) to make additional wings to the right of the main house. Craig also built all the balconies, decks and private baths that guests enjoy today. While Craig was building, John was decorating. He painted all the gorgeous trompe l’oeil murals that are still in the house today and rounded up all the antiques—many of them from Europe—that give the house its infamous interior design. Each of the rooms was decorated in a particular theme, and while some of the hardware, fabric and linens have been updated, they’re still in the style that John intended. Also in the ’80s, the hotel went from coed to being a men’sonly, clothing-optional resort. Since then the hotel has had a

renovating the bathrooms, recarpeting the entire place, having artists restore the murals, and bringing everything up to code. Part of the rejuvenation was combating the negative reputation the hotel had gotten during its off years. “There is a misperception of the Belvedere,” Dorcelien says. “I used to hear people walking by on the boardwalk say that it was ‘Liberace’s bathhouse.’ These were people who never came in. I would stop them and say, ‘Have you been in here? Did you even know that this was one of the first gay guesthouses in America?’” His campaign seems to be working, and the hotel is enjoying a clientele that is a mixture of returning guests who have been coming for decades, and younger men who are discovering it— and the joys of laying around the pool naked—for the first time. Part of the attraction is the convivial atmosphere that guests enjoy, and the long history of parties at Belvedere. After Hurricane Gloria, the island lost power and Belvedere opened its doors so that people could eat all the food (and drink their booze) before it spoiled. This being the Belvedere, costumes were mandatory. In 1993 they threw an infamous Toga Tea Party (the flier is framed and on the wall in one of the hallways) that was a fundraiser for God’s Love We Deliver. “It was a spectacle,” Craig chuckles when thinking about it. “The Imperial Court brought in the empress dressed as Cleopatra carried in by six body builders in gold lamé bikinis. We had a huge

rather frisky vibe, one that the staff neither actively encourages nor frowns upon. Craig Eberhardt says they’ll never slap anyone’s hands as long as they’re being respectful. The structure was completed by the early ’90s, but that doesn’t mean the building hasn’t been touched since. The bell tower, one of the most noticeable features of the estate, blew off during Hurricane Gloria in 1985—destroying part of the house on its way down—and had to be rebuilt. In 2005, the top half of one of the other towers blew off in a tornado and had to be replaced. Eberhardt is happy to report that none of the building should be toppling over anytime soon. When Craig and John’s relationship ended in 1994, Craig moved to Florida and started a real estate career. John continued to run the Belvedere, but due to his advancing age, he couldn’t tend the property like he could in his younger years and it fell into a state of disrepair. In 2003, John asked Craig to take over the property and he moved to Florida full time. In 2005 Craig brought his new boyfriend, Julian Dorcelien, up from Florida—where he was working for CNN—to Fire Island to help him get the guest house back in shape. “When I got here, it was raining and gray and you know how it is in Fire Island in the middle of April,” Julian says about his first trip to the property. “Everything was shuttered. It looked like, I don’t want to say Grey Gardens, but that’s the best way to describe it. It was this beautiful place that’d gotten out of hand.” Dorcelien and Craig got to work fixing up all the rooms, 18 JULY 16, 2010

lighting bridge on the roof and good-looking men laid out on tables surrounded by grapes. Everyone came in togas and we had a six-foot mirror ball in the tower with lasers shooting at it.” Recently, Craig and Dorcelien teamed up with Dave Hickey and P.J. Jones, the pair who throw the popular Baña parties in Manhattan, to bring in a whole new crowd. “After I first stayed there [in the ’90s] and fell in love [with it] I always tried to get out there,” Hickey explains. “When we started doing [ Baña], I thought it would be the perfect place to do a party in this palace that was built for pleasure and enjoying the beach and each other and being nude.” In 2009 the pair threw Baña Belvedere: The Last Days of Pompeii, their first Roman bacchanal at guesthouse. This year they came back for a whole weekend of events that followed in the same vein. The new party isn’t the only improvement. Craig says that after this summer season, they’re going to redo the communal area adding a new pool, hot tub and a new single-level deck surrounding it. Of course, everything will be done in a style to fit in with the rest of the house. “You can buy new things, but you can make it into a sterile place where it’s like a hospital. That’s not what the Belvedere is,” he says. No, the Belvedere is a place where anything can happen— including magic. N Visit BelvedereFireIsland.com for more info.

ADONIS AFTERHOURS, THE NEW SATURDAY NIGHT/SUNDAY MORNING PARTY AT GREENHOUSE, TAKE THE FUN INTO THE WEE HOURS.

MAN OF THE AFTERHOURS (left) DJ Eddie Baez; (inset) Greenhouse.

hey may call New York the city that never sleeps, but finding a place to party after last call ain’t easy. Nightlife entrepreneur/promoter Shelby Stone saw a need for an after-hours party where the gays could dance till dawn—and beyond. Her brainchild, Adonis Afterhours, debuted in the Times Square Art Center earlier this year, but didn’t really click until she teamed up with DJ Eddie Baez and moved the early-Sunday-morning jam down to Soho’s eco-friendly Greenhouse, home to Suzanne Bartsch and Kenny Kenny’s legendary Vandam. We chatted with Baez about his style, his partnership with Stone and what he hopes to bring to Adonis.

T

been after hours. It’s well overdue. Adonis has been traveling from club to club with Shelby Stone. After working with her, I saw that she really cared for the party and the people who attended. She’s new to the scene, but she has talent and enthusiasm I haven’t seen before. I was searching for the right venue and Greenhouse is that venue. They also share the same ideas of what a party should be. Together we will write a new chapter in New York nightlife.

When did you get started DJ-ing? I started in 1990. Once I started going to clubs I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I entered a contest and won a residency at the Sound Factory. Since then I’ve spun at Tunnel, Pacha and all over the world. I also do Thursday night at The Ritz.

Vandam is known for being very eclectic, with Chelsea boys, freaks, bears and straights. You’ve got Chris Ryan and King Ralphy involved here too—so what sort of crowd do you expect? Adonis is really catered [to] the boys but as with any good party we’re sure to have a great mix. I DJ circuit parties around the world, so that scene is my home turf. But I want everyone there. I want to bring that eclectic vibe you have at Vandam.

Why do an after-hours party? New York’s most legendary parties have

lar about where you wanted to move Adonis. What was it about Greenhouse that you liked? Greenhouse is giving us freedom to create a party for music lovers and dancers, not to mention some of New York’s sexiest clubgoers. Once we’re established there, we’ll be showcasing some amazing new talents. How late will the party go? As long as there are still people dancing! Hopefully it’ll go really late, because they start serving again at noon on Sunday. Do you have a recipe or suggestion for people that want to stay up and start partying at 4am? Disco naps and Red Bull can’t hurt. And I know that Miss Shelby has a few things up her sleeve. Just prepare to let the music energize you! N Adonis Afterhours awakens at Greenhouse, 150 Varick St( @ Vandam St), 212807-7000, GreenhouseUSA.com, Sundays at 4am, $20.

THERIGHTTRACK

Scissor Sisters

BY KEO NOZARI t’s clear from the Robert Mapplethorpe-snapped, butt-cheekssqueezing album cover that the Scissor Sister’s new release, Night Work, is meant to be plump with a sexy, playful dirtiness. And it definitely delivers! While their sophomore full-length, Ta-Dah, boasted a fun title, the music wasn’t always as magical. Fortunately, Night Work feels more akin to their self-titled debut, retaining some of their fiery East Village roots and sense of glittery musical adventure. Co-producer Stuart Price helps the band slather some luscious sheen on their highheeled tracks making Night Work something like a 14th Street hustler turned higher-end hooker. He keeps Scissor Sisters true to themselves, but similar to his work with Madonna and most recently Kylie Minogue, the album is largely a non-stop dance affair. The standout song on the album is far and away “Any Which Way,” which feels something like Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” met up with The Bee Gees in the studio one morning after coming back from a naughty disco orgy. And Ana Matronic’s fantastic rap-porn sex-speak offers up a favorite moment—some delicious dialogue about pantyhose, bottle tans and getting boinked right in front of her parents. It’s a must listen. Look for dance revelers to be dancing to this any which way they can! Matronic returns for sultry “Skin This Cat,” but front man Jake Shears gets the most play time—channeling David Bowie and a host of ’80s male New Wave singers—lending an effective, sexy chameleon-like quality to the vocal performances. This does, however, point to the Sisters’ Achilles’ heel— The band is steeped so high in their influences, they can sometimes sound too much like a nostalgia act. Some songs feel more like “homages” than originals, with New Wave acts getting the nod this time around. The title track definitely owes a debt to Sparks’ 1979 Giorgio Moroder-produced hit, “Beat the Clock,” while “Night Life” owes one to ’80s Prince. And “Running Out,” while a fun song, is something of a New

Wave megamix that could easily have already been performed by Wang Chung, The Knack or a host of ’80s male bands. Still, this album is certainly the band’s most cohesive and succinct to date—both musically and conceptually. It starts out buoyantly (as Shears informs us on the title track opener, “the 9-to-5 shift is over”) and gradually gets darker and dirtier, like a night out where we leave work to party and get progressively more wasted, creating a great dramatic arc. From their selftitled debut it was clear Scissor Sisters have a lovable quirkiness— and it’s great to see that quality still works for them, day or night. N

Jack Mackenroth

The Mariah Scareys

THE SCORE

BY JEFF KAGAN

JACK BE NIMBLE. JACK BE QUICK. ack Mackenroth, decorated swimmer. No, this doesn’t refer to a sequinspeckled Speedo. The shiny metal discs are medals—and lots of them. Mackenroth has competed as a swimmer in every Gay Games for the past 20 years and he’s accumulated more than 25 medals from the quadrennial competition. In a few weeks, Mackenroth, 41, will be heading to Cologne, Germany for Gay Games VIII. He’s got quite a challenge ahead of him as this year’s competition is stiffer and his opponents are younger. However, he’s going into this with his head above water, knowing that he will strive to do his personal best. “The Gay Games are so important for that reason because all athletes of all levels from all around the world support each other in a way that I have never experienced at any other sporting event,” he told us recently. Gay Games VIII is expected to have 10,000 athletes participating, with a million spectators. There are 35 sports and five cultural events being offered. This is the first time the Gay Games will be held in Germany, and it also marks the event’s first return to Europe since Amsterdam’s Gay Games V in 1998. The openly gay German Vice Chancellor, Guido Westerwelle, is the official patron and will host the Opening Ceremony on July 31, as Taylor Dayne performs “Facing a Miracle,” the official Gay Games VIII anthem.

For it, Mackenroth has kicked up the intensity in his training. Recently, at the U.S. Nationals, he came pretty close to some of his best times. He’s hoping to bring home some more hardware but he feels it’s really more about the experience. “My fondest memories of the Gay Games are from my first, in Vancouver, in 1990. I had just come out to my mom and I remember having to tell my aunt and uncle who lived in Vancouver that I would like to stay with them because I was coming there to participate in the Gay Games.” For many athletes, the Gay Games showcases a very personal connection between their sexual orientation and their ability to succeed at something they love. For Mackenroth, this couldn’t be truer. “I will never forget the moment of walking into the stadium during the parade of athletes in the opening ceremony. I had never been around so many people like myself and after years of torment, to have a stadium full of spectators cheering for me was indescribable. I was literally moved to tears. After competing, Mackenroth plans to watch some of the other sports. “You haven’t lived until you’ve seen same-sex synchronized swimming. Amazing.” N Gay Games VIII will be held from July 31– August 7 in Cologne, Germany. Visit Games-Cologne.de for more info.

In overtime Evan Ignall continued his huge defensive play-blocking shots, as Ed “Oh My God” Mangosing hit two huge three-pointers, leading his team to victory. More at NYCGayBasketball.org. Gay Vollies: The Gotham Volleyball’s fourth week of summer league play gave us a major upset in Division A, with upstart sixth place Team 2 captained by Shawn Moore winning against the first place Team Empanada X, captained by Manny Ciccone, as Team 2 took two of three sets, 21–19, 22–19, 18–22. In Division B, the first and second place teams continue to pummel the competition. Team Juicy Fruits captained by Michael Chia crushed the last place team, Meet the Fockers, captained by James Costantino, in all three sets, 25–16, 25–11, 25-9. Not to be outdone, second place Team 4*ro*cious*, captained by E.J. Weppler, defeated the seventh place Power Rangers, captained by Dan Miron, taking two out of three sets, 23– 12, 22–12, 17–22. A Night At The Tombs

CURTAIN UP LONDON ASSURANCE NT LIVE THE GRAND MANNER A NIGHT AT THE TOMBS

BY DAVID HURST he wildly popular inaugural season of London’s National Theater broadcasts, NT Live, concluded with Nicholas Hytner’s sold-out production of Dion Boucicault’s 1841 comedy of manners, London Assurance. Filmed and broadcast on June 28, this superbly cast and staged production sparkled throughout thanks to the delicious, over-the-top comedic performances of Simon Russell Beale and Fiona Shaw as Sir Harcourt Courtly and Lady Gay Spanker, two of the greatest comic roles in English theater. Assurance was last seen on Broadway in the Roundabout’s excellent 1997 staging that was nominated for Tonys for Best Revival of a Play, as well as Best Actor and Best Featured Actress for Brian Bedford and Helen Carey, who played Courtly and Spanker, respectively. Since a transfer of Hytner’s pitch-perfect production seems unlikely, this invaluable document of Boucicault’s hilariously funny play was a welcome treat! A second season of NT Live will launch in fall 2010 with Shakespeare’s Hamlet starring Rory Kinnear, Danny Boyle’s production of Frankenstein and the Tony winner Fela!, among others. A.R. Gurney’s latest play, The Grand Manner, is a charming but flawed memory piece based on Gurney’s real-life 1948 backstage meeting with Katharine Cornell while she was starring in Antony and Cleopatra. Bobby Steggert stars as Gurney’s doppelganger while Kate Burton plays Cornell, Brenda Wehle portrays her lover and general manager, Gertrude Macy, and Boyd Gaines is her director-husband, Guthrie McClintic. Director Mark Lamos’ production looks terrific and the cast is fine, especially Steggert, who continues to display his depth and range. But Gurney’s play is superficial where it should be substantial and Cornell and McClintic’s relationship is given short shrift, with Cornell’s bold but absurd admission to the young Pete that she’s a lesbian and her husband a homosexual. Theater aficionados may like it, but The Grand Manner isn’t grand enough. Theater Askew’s A Night at the Tombs, written and performed by transsexual actress Bianca Leigh, is a madcap recounting of the events surrounding Leigh’s arrest for

prostitution. A stunning beauty (with flawless make-up, p.s.), Leigh throws in six songs that aren’t really needed to tell her story. But since her collaborators include such acclaimed artists as Jeff Whitty and Taylor Mac, we’re delighted to listen. Like Zsa Zsa Gabor, Leigh’s a jailbird whose story is priceless. N The Grand Manner plays through August 1 at Mitzi Newhouse (150 W 65th St, 212-239-6200). A Night at the Tombs plays Thursdays through August 5 at Bowery Poetry Club (308 Bowery, 212-352-3101).

CD REVIEWS ORIGINAL BWAY CAST RECORDING PROMISES, PROMISES The fabulous new cast recording of Bacharach & David’s 1960s time capsule Promises, Promises finds Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth in terrific voice and having a blast. Even though the orchestrations have been reduced (by Jonathan Tunick) and a couple of songs have been added (unnecessarily), this new cast recording of a scintillating score is a wonderful and necessary addition to your Broadway collection. (Masterworks Broadway)

HEART & SOUL: CELEBRATING THE UNFORGETTABLE SONGS OF FRANK LOESSER Culled from Sony’s archives, Heart & Soul contains a treasure trove of some of the greatest covers from Loesser’s Hollywood years as well as his Broadway smashes. Boasting Helen Forrest, Sarah Vaughan, Johnny Mathis, Doris Day, The Four Lads, Della Reese, Vic Damone and Michele Lee, Heart & Soul is the perfect summer cocktail-hour musical fare. SHE DRIVE’S ME CRAZY Marion Cotillard and Leonardo DiCaprio in Inception.

REEL LOVE INCEPTION

VALHALLA RISING Time Investment: 92 min. Return on Investment: 30 min.

Time Investment: 148 min. Return on Investment: 140 min. here’ve been high expectations about Inception (Warner Bros), director Christopher Nolan’s elegant mind-fuck of a follow-up to 2008’s The Dark Knight. With only the trailer’s folding cities and slowmotion car crashes to whet our appetites, it’s a credit to the studio that it’s excited us so much for this dense, confusing movie about ideas and the dream state. Many filmmakers have tackled the endless possibilities of the dream world with success (The Matrix) and failure (The Cell) but Inception manages to feel completely original. And this story could only be a movie. A play or a book could never illustrate this realm, could never produce the physical effect that watching this multilayered puzzle does while making you question your sanity. Its plot follows a “one-last-job” heist whereby con men (led by Leonardo DiCaprio) fuck with people’s heads, but it’s really about how we grasp “reality,” perfect for our modern world where our dreams of what we can do and what we can actually do grow closer everyday. (It’s curious the film didn’t jump on the 3D boat, given the power of that medium’s ability to confuse our realities.) Inception is by no means the perfect combination of intellectual discourse and universally adored blockbuster that The Dark Knight was. Nolan’s attempt at an original screenplay is disappointingly vague and filled with almost enough plot holes to drown itself. Thankfully though the director and his team manage to pull off quite a cinematic coup and, by the finale, we can only take a breath and gasp, “Bravo.” —Benjamin Solomon

t’s no secret that Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn likes violence. His previous brutal works—Pusher, Bleeder and Bronson—explore the different ways humanity’s primal instinct to bash each other’s heads in still thrives in the modern world. In his latest gory escapade, Valhalla Rising (IFC Films), he takes that aggression to the Middle Ages. The almost-wordless epic follows a mute warrior named OneEye (the always-excellent Mads Mikkelsen sporting—you guessed it—a single eye), who, along with a young boy, escapes imprisonment from a band of pagans who force him into gut-ripping battle in the

I

northernmost part of the world. The duo reluctantly tag along with a naïve band of Christian Vikings on their way to the Holy Land only to wind up in a strange new world (possibly the New World) that they begin to perceive as “hell” or possibly Valhalla, the Norse “hall of the slain.” Valhalla Rising positions itself a selfimportant avant-garde or expressionistic journey, but beneath its bombastic music and red-tinted premonitions (which make it feel a lot like a Kubrick film about the Crusades) the film is just a mash-up of violence-tinged ideas that are never brought to fruition. Refn claims he likes to shoot scenes in chronological order so he can “explore with the characters.” Instead it seems he got pretty lost himself on this cinematic misfire. —BS IVE GOT MY EYE ON YOU Mads Mikkelsen in Valhalla Rising.

The author of four books and contributing writer to several others, he’s a regular commentator on shows like Countdown with Keith Olbermann and Theater Talk. So what’s a must-have for Musto when it comes to New York takeaway? “I love old-school Chinese because it reminds me of so many fun times from my childhood, and Mee Noodle Shop & Grill (547 Second Ave, 212-779-1596) delivers—in every way. They serve reasonably priced traditional soups such as my fave, Hot and Sour ($1.65/sm, $3/lg), as well as Dumplings ($4.75) and delightful entrées. I like Mango Shrimp ($11.95) with basil chicken, but plain old Chow Mein ($6.95) is divine, too. Mee is quick and cheap and quite tasty for your tummy! Help make this the Mee decade.” N

hat used to be the Mexican-flavored interior of Blue Moon is practically unrecognizable since Silom set up shop with somewhat spicier Thai trappings and tastes from Bangkok’s famous Silom Road. As much as we might mourn the old Chelsea staple, the food presently delivered is actually very good. Electing to sit on the tall chairs at a communal configuration by the windows instead of positioning ourselves at the tables constructed from the bases of sewing machines, we ordered a Mango-Rita ($10), which needed a little tinkering (a.k.a. more tequila) to evenly balance the mango purée so it didn’t feel like we were drinking a smoothie. Our waitress was happy to comply. Simple Summer Rolls ($4) started us off, the traditional favorite featuring vermicelli noodles wrapped around shrimp, mint, lettuce and cucumber and served with a sweet, kicky peanut sauce. I think the Pad Thai ($11) was one of the best versions of the dish that I’ve ever had! We ordered our slightly sweet sautéed rice stick noodles with spongy, creamy tofu—a perfect composition of scallion shards, egg, dried bean curd and crushed peanuts dressed very cleanly with toasty oil and nicely spicy sauce. A must have. Yum Duck ($18) arrived as a gorgeous display with frilly onions adorning the plate. The duck itself had been marinated in lime juice, featured crispy skin and was served with pineapple, orange, chili and what appeared to be wedges of Fuji apples. Sautéed string beans, Pad Tua ($10), were good but spicy bitches indeed—broad Hobo Noodles ($11) with string beans and chicken were kinder, with a lingering tingle on the palate from chili pepper and boisterous basil leaves. Special Honor of the King ($13) reigned supreme as a heightened sensory experience. Pounded, panfried chicken breast dipped in an egg coating was suited up with invigorating red curry, Thai herbs, a flourish of peanut sauce and a side of highly complementary coconut curry rice. Famous Marble Cheesecake ($5) with a chocolate wafer crust paved the way for an incredibly smooth exit after the trip down Silom Road.. N 48 JULY 16, 2010

BEARBONERS: DADDIESAND THEIRBOYS (BearFilms.com) t’s a bear cub’s nature to want to please his daddy. Why do you think Yogi kept Boo-Boo around all those years?

THIS LITTLE PIGGY WENT WEE WEE Chase Woofer in Bear Boners: Daddies and Their Boys

ROD: Manuel, this movie made me feel like Goldilocks. Scene after scene, I searched for the bear that was just right. Daddy’s Boy? Too big. Chase Woofer? Too soft. For me, Bear Boners started off as Barely a Boner. MANUEL: Too often bear porn is just plussized fucking. But this movie is so much

ANALASSAULT (TitanMen/Rough, 1-800-360-7204, TitanMen.com) etroleum-lubricated gloves, sweaty men and gushers. If this weren’t hardcore sex, I’d say BP was at it again.

P

ROD: You can either watch this movie straight through for the rough treatment these asses get, or if you’re not into extreme fetishes, just skip the second half of each scene, when the gloved fists start flying and the “fuck machine” gets turned on (but I don’t). I’m on the fence as to which way to watch. Thank god I’m not on the fist! MANUEL: I’ve never seen an Ethan Wolfe scene that didn’t make me want to jump through the screen and join him. His hefty dick doesn’t get as much ass time as the variable-speed pistonaction butt plug, but I still enjoyed watching Ethan’s pee play with power-bottom Tibor Wolfe. Ethan tossed the salad, but Tibor provided the vinaigrette. And what’s it called when you orally swap piss? “Pee-balling”?

more. These five scenes offer leather, butt plugs, cum eating, paddling, piercings, fisting, slings— never a dull moment! Take smooth Chase Woofer, who can’t decide if he’s a bear or a pig. Chase eats Dirk Grizzly’s ass, double-penetrates him with a dildo, cums across Dirk’s hairy XXL stomach and, like a good cub, laps up his daddy’s load. “Someone’s been eating my porridge, and they ate it all up!” ROD: I am so not attracted to huge, bald, mondohairy guys like Grizzly. And Ric Kasino looks like he’s been hibernating as long as Rip Van Winkle! MANUEL: For Cliff Douglas, there’s no such thing as too hard. “Tear it apart!” he orders Clint Taylor. “C’mon, you know it doesn’t break.” No, but it sure stretches. Enough to accommodate Taylor’s whole paw. I loved Douglas’s fisting invitation: “Is your hand cold?” ROD: I finally stumbled upon Jeremy Matthews and Hartt Frisco. Matthews was the least hairy, so for this Goldilocks, he was just right! ROD:

MANUEL:

ROD: These Wolfes are no relation, but even if they were, fucking your brother with a machine doesn’t count as incest. Does it? Next, Billy Berlin and Alessio Romero explore each other’s dark sides. The ease with which Berlin takes Romero’s fist scares me. I like walking! MANUEL: Was that a sex toy or the bishop from a lawn-chess set that Romero used to warm up Berlin’s hole? But the most extreme moment was when Tony Buff made redhead pornvirgin Sam Lane fill an empty Poland Springs bottle with his own piss, then drink it. Um, I’ll pass. ROD:
