BLAME IT ON RIO HOW BRAZIL’S SEX TRADE HELPED IMPROVE MY RELATIONSHIP.

t was there on a very romantic and sunny beach in Rio de Janeiro that I was having a very deep conversation with my boyfriend. “Should we do it?” he asked. “I don’t know. I think it would be fun, but I’m nervous,” I replied. “What do you think?” “I think we should do it,” he said definitively. No, we weren’t talking about moving in together, getting engaged or having a baby. Our deepest and most emotional conversation to date was about whether or not we should visit a Brazilian bathhouse together. For those of you who don’t know, the bathhouses in Rio have steam rooms, saunas, lockers, and men in towels like every other sex club in the world, but they have one thing that others don’t: the most gorgeous, willing and inexpensive hookers you will find anywhere on earth. I initially brought up the idea of taking my boyfriend when we got to Rio, which was our first vacation together. It was mostly a lark and out of curiosity. As your average sex-crazed gay man, I love bathhouses and I love screwing and if I were in Rio on my own, I’d definitely be

at the sauna sampling the garratos, as the boys are called. But why take my boyfriend? It just seemed like we shouldn’t. It was like our relationship wasn’t real or serious if we went to some brothel and hired a bunch of boys to bugger us. It’s not that I didn’t want to; it was that, for the first time ever, I felt some strange bourgeois conventionality tugging at me and telling me to cut it out and behave myself. It was that and the sneaking feeling that I wasn’t somehow good enough for my man. That on our romantic vacation he’d rather fuck a whore than give it to me good on a hotel balcony. But why couldn’t we have both? Being a natural rebel, as soon as I felt like people thought we shouldn’t go, I was on board to check it out. We went the next day, a Thursday, around 5pm, which is when the bathhouse is busy with guys on the way home from work. When we got inside the paying customers were wearing white towels and the pros were wearing red towels. Well, most of them weren’t wearing anything but smiles and giant uncut hard-ons that several were jerking: the best advertisement I’ve seen in my life. We sat down next to each other on a couch and a working man came over to ask if we were a couple. I looked at my boyfriend with a look that said, “Well? Are we?” “No,” he said. “Just friends.” It wasn’t cold; it just meant there weren’t going to be any three- or four-ways in my future. We checked out the merchandise together, pointing out guys for each other and offering critiques. Finally my boyfriend engaged in a bit of conversation with a gorgeous twinkish thing with a perfect body and green eyes. As soon as he was occupied, I knew what I wanted: a giant muscle hunk named Anderson who had introduced himself earlier. My boyfriend went off to a room upstairs with his man, and I went off with mine, and we did what any sex-crazed homosexuals on vacation would do: we had wild, crazy (and safe) sex with strangers. The experience cost each of us a little more than $50.

LOOKING AT WILL EDWARDS you’d never know that he had terrible acne as a kid. “that was a very dark time in my life. i was very depressed about my acne and extremely frustrated with going to dermatologists for years and being prescribed various medications that didn’t work.” that dark time turned into an obsession with acne and how to get rid of it. edwards, 33, best known by his former job slinging drinks for seven years at splash, has made that obsession his new passion with Skin Therapy Lab (SkinTherapyLab.com), a twomonth-old aesthetics practice in hell’s Kitchen. a licensed graduate of Christine valmy’s international school of esthetics, edwards administers an arsenal of organic and preservative and nut-free treatments, from diamond microdermabrasion to chemical peels to honey full-body scrubs, to reduce the adverse effects of the hard new york environment on the skin. “in a society that values perfection and beauty, skin issues are very hard to deal with because there are so many stigmas attached to problematic skin,” he explains. “my goal is to help each client get their skin looking its best.” it helps that edwards’ convenient hell’s Kitchen location—and former profession—have meant the majority of his clients are gay men. But he doesn’t mind, admitting their interest in beauty makes his job easier. “the gay clientele are very clear on wanting to be well informed about products used and how to maintain the look until the next treatment.” —Benjamin Solomon

DESTIGMATIZING HPV TREATMENT IT’S THE WIDESPREAD STI YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE, BUT WITH REGULAR DOCTOR VISITS AND A NEW VACCINE, IT IS ALSO EASILY PREVENTED.

16 APRIL 20, 2012

A

25-year-old working in film production, Jeff Chomsky had a pretty good sex life with his boyfriend. In fact, you could call it vigorous. Maybe even exhausting. So when he and his boyfriend both noticed fleshy bumps around and inside Chomsky’s anus, they assumed it was just a sign of too much lovin’. That is, until they didn’t go away. And grew bigger. A visit to the doctor taught them a new word. Condyloma, the term for genital and anal warts, which is caused by strains of a virus called human papillomavirus, better known as HPV. It’s the most common STI, and so widespread that if you’ve had more than four sexual partners (or if any of those partners has had more than four sexual partners), you’ve almost certainly been exposed at least once. HPV causes all types of warts, including the kinds we get on our hands and feet. Around 40 HPV strains specifically cause the warts that grow in the genital region, around the anus and inside the rectum. A handful of those strains, particularly the ones labeled 16 and 18, can lead to cancer in the mouth, throat and rectum. Gay men acquire up to four times as many HPV strains as their heterosexual counterparts and have the highest incidence of anal/rectal cancers—more than four times that of cervical cancer. Condoms do offer some protection, but because HPV can infect skin not covered by the latex—the entire pubic area, scrotum, inner thighs, ass and even what some lovingly call “the taint”—it can still spread if present. “At any given moment about 60 percent of men carry HPV on their penis and 60 percent of HIV-negative men in their anal canal,” says Dr. Stephen E. Goldstone. A Chelsea-based pioneer in the field of ano/rectal disorders, he is one of the city’s most esteemed specialists in the field of HPV. “And 90 percent of HIV-positive men have HPV in their anal canal. It’s everywhere and probably unavoidable.” Unfortunately, Chomsky learned after a biopsy that he had an outbreak of one of the cancer-causing strains, and it was present both within his anal canal and outside the anus. Happily, none of these warts were cancerous yet, and Chomsky underwent a surgical procedure to have them removed. Now he remains vigilant and aware of HPV, inspecting his partners’ genitals before engaging in sexual activity, and getting checked up regularly to monitor for any new outbreaks and potential cancerous cells. “It grows very fast and if you’re not comfortable with your body or sexuality you might let this stuff sit for ages,” says nurse Jeff Huyett of the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center. “Many just let it grow for months and months and have terrible cases of warts.” Fortunately, a vaccine, Gardasil, is now available that protects against HPV strains 16 and 18 and two others. Without question, all gay men under 27 should get it ASAP, if not the entire community. And in New York, there are physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating HPV outbreaks, including the team—Dr. Goldstone and Huyett, specifically—that ran the successful trials for the vaccine’s efficacy in men.

GETTING THE FACTS hPV Is EAsILY CAuGhT via skin-to-skin contact and oral sex. While it is most contagious when physically manifest as visible warts, which can appear raised, flat, cauliflower-shaped, or like a skin tag or mole, HPV can also be passed along even when no visual signs are present. It can remain in the body for years before manifesting itself. In fact, many of those who contract HPV, either externally or internally, will never experience a noticeable outbreak. If one’s immune system is functioning properly, most times the body cycles HPV out of the body on its own: it typically takes between 18–36 months, Huyett says. The HIV-positive, however, aren’t as likely to cycle out the virus—even those successfully on combination therapy. And yet despite the virus’ frequency, easy transmission and potentially fatal consequences, education and awareness

“Some will say they have a ‘skin tag,’ and I’m like, there is no such thing as a skin tag down on your pee-pee.” —Dr. Alison Gruen of HPV has been woefully lacking, even within the medical establishment itself. Doctors regularly misdiagnose condyloma outbreaks, fail to properly or thoroughly examine for it, or flatout have no idea what it looks and feels like. Full disclosure: I have personally met up with guys who had obvious, visible cases of genital and anal warts and some of them had already seen doctors who misdiagnosed or left their condition untreated. Let me tell you, it really brings a hookup to a screeching halt when you have to take photos of someone’s asshole so they can see what their warts look like. (Have we grossed you out into a doctors appointment yet?) “I think most men are unaware of HPV,” says Huyett, who founded a men’s clinic in Missouri and has dedicated his life to queer wellness. Informally known as Callen-Lorde’s “butt guy,” specializing in ano/rectal health, he regularly administers rectal Pap smears—a way to prescreen for possible cancers and unusual cell growth just like the female Pap smear does with the cervix—and examines for anal warts. Huyett recommends a rectal Pap smear every 2–3 years for HIV-negative individuals, and annually if HIV-positive. “It would be malpractice to not look at a cervix once a year [for cancerous cells]. For some reason we don’t have the same standard for

DESTIGMATIZING HPV TREATMENT the anus. Every healthcare provider needs to get over their phobia and learn to do an anal exam.” Another case study: Randy Gelman, 29, went to see his doctor after feeling what he assumed were hemorrhoids around his anus. The physician took a gander and prescribed an anti-inflammatory. A week later, the bumps seemed to be growing, “dangling,” Gelman specifies, and a second visit netted a diagnosis of warts. Gelman was lucky in that this was only an external outbreak and there was no sign of internal warts, nor were they high-risk cancer-causing strains. He says that the embarrassment and shame he felt (he also had a long-term partner at the time, who needed to be educated about HPV and the fact it can lie dormant for years) was the most painful element of the ordeal. “The more sexually active you are, the more vigilant you have to be,” Gelman muses. Have you ever noticed how good the skin of Scissor Sisters’ Del Marquis is? His sister, Dr. Alison Gruen, is a dermatologist (and a sassy, super-gay friendly one at that), who works out of an Upper East Side practice. “I see probably two HPV cases a day,” she estimates. “Married, single, doesn’t matter. Once I got paged at 2am from an emergency room because they had a patient with anal warts so big they were like softballs—he couldn’t sit down they were so big. People let these things go for years because internists and gynecologists are poor at diagnosing HPV. Some will say they have a ‘skin tag,’ and I’m like, there is no such thing as a skin tag down on your pee-pee.” Gruen also points out that if HPV is present on the outside of the anus, it is often present on the inside as well, making it critical to get a rectal pap smear or inspection if warts ever materialize. “If it’s strain 16 and 18 in particular, it can evolve into anal cancer and you’ll die like Farrah Fawcett. Most cancers down there are induced by HPV.”

TREATMENT AND PREVENTION IN MOsT hIV-NEGATIVE PEOPLE, HPV will be kept in check by the immune system and cycled out of the body entirely. Because of this, some may assume that they needn’t bother getting treated for warts because the body will take care of them. However, Dr. Gruen assures that this is a bogus way to think through the situation, and that removal and treatment of noticeable warts are an absolute must. “The problem with ‘let my body clear it’ is HPV is not very immunogenic,” she explains. “Our immune system is happy to let HPV crawl all over us. As opposed to when you get strep throat and your immune system goes crazy fighting it. Because HPV is shallow in the skin, our system goes, ‘huh, great, what do

18 APRIL 20, 2012

we care, it’s not going to kill him.’ So genital warts often [don’t clear themselves], because the system ignores them,” Gruen says. If they spread, they can become internal, which is much more difficult to deal with. “The treatments aren’t too bad, and not what they are probably dreading. Usually it’s freezing in combination with prescription creams like Veregen and Aldara that make your immune system attack it by ringing the dinner bell and saying, ‘it’s warts—come and get it!’” she jokes. “And those creams do help prevent reoccurrences.” As far as prevention and self-maintenance, learning to check oneself for lumps and warts inside and out, as one would check for testicular cancer, is important. Dr. Goldstone emphasizes that “getting vaccinated is the best prevention and the other is using condoms.” “I think people should ask their doctor to do a rectal Pap,” he continues. “I do it in my office, they do it at Callen-Lorde and [at] the clinic through Cornell at GMHC. There are lots of places you can get it done,” Goldstone says. You can’t just have a Pap smear, though. In case you have an abnormal result, you need a doc on hand who has the wherewithal to deal with the problem. “Gay men need to not be so embarrassed about problems going on in their butt. Too often we see people with advanced problems too late. Doctors are embarrassed to look, or too busy. If you’re sexually active you need to be screened regularly for STDs. In your tushy, your throat, and in your penis.” N

A SHOT OF PREVENTION the hpv vaCCine anD hoW to get it—for free. erCK & Co.’s hpv vaCCine, Gardasil (Gardasil.com), is FDA-approved for use in men and protects from the two most cancer-causing strains, 16 and 18, and two other pesky ones, 6 and 11 (the former can cause warts inside the throat). It is a three-injection series administered over six months. Most health insurance plans will cover the vaccine if the recipient is under 27 years old. It’s not that the vaccine loses effectiveness after age 27. It’s just that the younger you are, the more likely it is that you haven’t been exposed to the four HPV strains the vaccine protects against. In fact, the vaccine has been most aggressively targeted at pre-adolescents who have not yet had sexual contact at all—which, of course, has caused a stir amongst “abstinence only”-obsessed conservatives. For those over age 19 who lack insurance or cannot afford to pay, Gardasil is part of the Merck Vaccine Patient Assistance Program (MVPAP) and available for free. Click the “Paying for Gardasil” section under the “Learn About Gardasil” tab at Gardasil.com for more information.

ON THE EVE OF ROCKIT’S THIRD ANNY, WE LOOK AT WHETHER THERE’S ANY SHAME IN LOVING POP. op music is sort of a strange beast. On the one hand, it only garners the label “pop” by being just that: popular. On the other hand, there’s a growing voice for the anti-pop movement; people who rail against all things pop, arguing that the masses are force-fed Top 40 by the enormous machine that is the mainstream music industry. From Brooklyn to Hell’s Kitchen, the push and pull of those two camps plays out on a nightly basis on New York’s dance floors and in its clubs. But in a city that was once the capital of underground house parties, are pop nights still a guilty pleasure? Tonight, Brandon Voss and Tony Fornabaio’s long-running, once-roving hit weekend starter Rockit celebrates a fairly major milestone in the form of the party’s third anniversary. Maybe New Yorkers love pop a little more than we’d like to admit. “I think [New York] is the most obsessed city, maybe in the world, with pop music,” says Whitney Day, who is a regular FornabaioVoss DJ and who’s spun Rockit recently. “[That] is exactly why Rockit works well,” she says. “I think that has fueled the success of Rockit. It’s [the music] that people know and love.” The party, which has inhabited a slew of New York’s club venues during its three years, is much different now that it has landed at fresh-faced mega-club XL, says Voss. “We started in the relatively small underground lounge Amalia, upgraded to the larger West Chelsea club Quo, moved on to mega-club District 36 and then to Crimson for a few months while we put the finishing touches on XL,” he explains. “With each venue we worked hard to reach a new audience, which was especially important given the size of XL.” And that continuing effort shows. Voss proudly points out that today Rockit sees 1,500 clubbers each week. Those clubgoers, says regular lounge DJ Lady Bunny, are part of what makes the party memorable week in and week out. “Rockit succeeds because of the very diverse, sexy crowd it attracts,” the drag legend opines. At the heart of the matter, though, may be the fact that pop music itself is currently undergoing a bit of an identity crisis. As electronic genres like dub step are gaining large followings after years of relative obscurity, our definition of pop is in limbo. “We are at a point where pop and the underground are running side by side,” says DJ Vito Fun, a regular at Rockit. “As a DJ, I limit

the amount of Top 40 I play. There are so many songs [that] I consider Taylor Dayne performing ‘the new pop’ [that] fit the at Rockit party’s identity so much better.” Voss is also quick to note that applying labels to a party—or the type of music a party’s DJs play—can be a tricky business. “Rockit isn’t a strict pop night. [I] don’t know exactly what you call our genre of music; we refer to it as Freestyle or Top 40 but certainly not a pure pop night,” the promoter says. Original Rockit DJ Keo Nozari, who pens Next Magazine’s weekly pop music column, The Right Track, says that pop has an inclusive, feel-good vibe that people are naturally attracted to, regardless of whether it’s “cool” or not. “At its heart, great pop music is about love and togetherness,” he says. “It can be a great unifier.” Still, Lady Bunny suggests we may be over thinking the whole thing. “With an open bar kicking off every single [party], I’m not sure anyone is paying much attention to what I play!” —Alex Erikson Rockit Three Year Anniversary Masquerade Ball at XL Nightclub, 512 W 42nd St (btwn 10th/11th Aves), Fri, April 20 at 10pm; $10 with XL membership/$15 general admission. STRIPPED DOWN SPOTLIGHT

MICHAEL GATES’ NAKED SPACE IN PARK SLOPE IS PROVING NUDE YOGA IS MORE THAN A FAD TO GIGGLE AT. could never do that.”That’s the usual reaction Michael Gates gets when he tells people about his naked yoga class. And it’s something he finds puzzling. “‘Why can’t you?’ is often my question back to them,” he says. “What’s keeping you from being naked? It’s liberating!” Gates started his naked yoga practice more than four years ago as a way of extending the freedom he found one summer after he’d spent a lot of time at the nude beaches on Fire Island. “As the season ended, I wondered what could I do to keep that spirit alive. I thought maybe I could invite people over and keep that experience going nude myself.” So Gates set about renovating a third-floor space in his and his partner’s Park Slope home, creating a cozy and sunny studio to hold informal naked gettogethers. The Naked Space sessions originally started out as casual nude meditations, but slowly they evolved into full-blown yoga studio sessions. Once he got his certification as a yoga instructor, Gates began formally leading a weekly practice on Tuesday nights that has developed a small but dedicated following. The intimate classes, which usually draw between eight and ten men, focus on a practice that is mellow and meditative, more about awareness of the self and not the other naked people in the room. “It’s basically hatha yoga, organized around asana and physical practice with an emphasis on mindfulness,” Gates says. “It’s not really a workout. It’s moving meditation.” Naked Space regulars like Charles Branstool love the freedom that naked yoga gives them. “Part of my goal for yoga [is to]

elevate to a higher-level plane of existence,” Branstool explains. “Removing all earthly bound objects like your clothes, cell phone, wallets and jewelry allows you to let go of yourself and your ego and your insecurities. All of this letting go allows me to reach that higher plane.” Gates states that the benefits of this practice are that it can make you stronger, leaner and more flexible. Of course, there is also the added visual benefit of getting healthy with other naked guys. “There is an eroticism to it,” says Gates. “I don’t deny that. There’s something erotic about being naked…with a bunch of other naked people.”

And things do come up, as it were. “Of course I’ve had an erection during class,” says Joseph, a participant in Gates’ class who has been practicing nude yoga for a decade. “Having an erection is wonderful. But I concentrate on what I’m doing and it goes down.” Gates doesn’t find the sexuality of nude yoga to be a bad thing at all. In fact, in a way, he sees it as something that can attract potential students. “There are so many obstacles to people practicing yoga and mindfulness,” he adds. “Nudity can be a hook that draws people in.” Now, Gates hopes to expand his of-

ferings from the Tuesday night class to other, longer sessions for naked meditation, partner yoga and couples massage. Have any actual romantic partnerships been formed in his naked yoga class? Gates says no. “But what I have seen are some good friendships,” he adds with a smile. “People letting their guards down and taking their clothes off is a metaphor for that. I’m revealing myself. I’m opening myself.” —Brian Sloan Naked Yoga for Men at The Naked Space in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Tues 7pm–8:30pm; $20. Stonewall members are the local chapter of the National Stonewall Democrats, and are active all over the community. “Our members are involved in everything from non-New York campaigns to community boards, to working for elected officials to [Heritage of Pride] Parade to homeless LGBT youth to trans rights,” Sklarz says. “At the last meeting, we had the new liaison from Senator Gillibrand, we had [New York City] Councilmember Jessica Lappin, and we had Joanne Simon, an independent district leader from Brooklyn who wants our endorsement.”

n the last few years the green movement has gone from a few old hippies chaining themselves to a tree that some big, bad corporation wants to cut down to a downright mainstream movement. Whether you’re a guitar-toting greenie or are just trying to do your part, there are a slew of environmental organizations with Earth Day events celebrating ways you can go green. —Alex Erikson

Green Day

Located four blocks from the 4 Train stop at 167th St, this event helps you learn practical ways to increase your recycling and energy efficiency. The third annual Nourishing Earth Day Celebration “is an amazing demonstration of how the everyday decisions we make in life affect our environment,” says organizer Monica Johnson. Saturday, April 21 at 11am.

On April 25 Tomaz Hipolito takes a group of eight nature loving urbanites on a walk in which they’ll stage a green intervention amidst Manhattan’s dense urban landscape. Participants will learn to identify and evaluate abandoned objects suitable for “painting” with a homemade mixture of moss, which, ideally, will eventually take hold and grow on the objects. 6:30pm to 8pm; $20.

THE COCK

Open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8am–6pm, the Union Square Greenmarket is a great way to get local, organic produce directly from the source. On Friday, April 20 a host of New School environmental studies students give talks on environmentalism. Every Monday and Saturday you can recycle unwanted clothing and textiles there and on April 21, greenmarket volunteers will be building a mandala out of recycled plastic bags.

NOWHERE

On April 21 from noon–6pm, Good Old Lower East Side, a community organization whose mission is to shift the balance of power toward the people of the Lower East Side, puts on an afternoon of gardening, recycling, rainwater collection and waste reduction at their Alphabet City Community Garden.

The Right Track

Nicki Minaj

By Keo Nozari omeone pass the mood stabilizers! There’s a lot about Nicki Minaj’s sophomore album that’s a schizophrenic hot mess. First there’s the album title Pink Friday… Roman Reloaded, which is downright confusing. Is this a special edition of her debut album, Pink Friday? No, it’s actually comprised of entirely new material. Then there’s the super unflattering, paint-splattered album cover that seems to say, “I’ve been badly caught in wind machine on the set of Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ video.” Follow that with all the alter egos she ricochets between on the album—and with 22 tracks on the deluxe edition—it leaves us feeling slightly more bloated and hormonally unhinged than a pregnant Jessica Simpson. Most notable of the personalities is the overwrought and super contrived “Roman Zolanski,” who we wish would make like Roman Polanski and flee the country on account of accosting our children! Having said all that, this album is much better than its predecessor—stronger material, more fun and rocking some seriously hot tracks. And even though it jumps around like a bunny in heat, the benefit is there’s appeal aplenty for hiphop, pop and dance fans alike. Or even something in between. For example, we might not be a fan of “Stupid Hoe” for its negative name-calling; however, its bombastic beat is undeniable. Minaj has taken a beating in the press for some of the album’s lyrics, but she clearly enjoys playing the clown—and as silly as they get at times, the lyrics also evince some winning, zany imagination. Minaj even takes a minute to show her softer, more vulnerable side with the heartfelt “Marilyn Monroe,” a triumphant moment. Another chunk of the material is clearly inspired by the super pop success of her Pink Friday single “Super Bass.” That being Minaj’s most successful single to date (it’s reported to have sold more than 4 million digital copies), it’s no surprise there’s serious effort in recreating that magic. And there are

some great contenders: “Starships” finds producer RedOne flying off with a Dr. Luke/Katy Perry-“Last Friday Night”-inspired vibe and combining it with a Calvin Harris/Rihanna-“We Found Love” big synth breakdown. “Pound the Alarm” is a dance-floor jumper, and “Automatic” is—to reference it—“a monster on the floor.” The downside with these tracks focusing more on Minaj’s singing, however, is that really any of the current crop of pop divas could be doing them instead. Especially compared to tracks like “Beez in the Trap,” which shows Minaj definitely has more personality when rapping—we just wish she’d zero in on one personality at a time! N

FROM PARIS WITH LOVE Diane Keaton and Richard Jenkins in Darling Companion

Going Down in La La Land

Darling Companion Time Investment: 103 min. Return on Investment: 91 min. charmingly dysfunctional family, a lavish wedding, scenic and commanding American wilderness, and of course, a dog…sounds very beenthere-done-that, right? In spite of subject matter that could have easily been bland or insipid, Darling Companion (Sony Pictures Classics) is pretty delightful, even if it packs about as much punch as a dog food commercial. It’s not surprising that this group managed to pull it off though, considering the roll call: the Kasdans, the husband-and-wife writer-director team nominated for an Oscar for 1991’s Grand Canyon, as well as the particularly excellent cast, with Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline acting so naturally together, you might start wracking your brain to see if these two decorated Hollywood vets have ever been paired together before. They haven’t, although Keaton—who cuddles a baby in the film’s opening, strongly reminiscent of Baby Boom— does share a credit here with her co-star from that film, the still-sexy Sam Shepard (sadly, they don’t get any screen time together). Dianne Wiest and Richard Jenkins are particularly gleeful, which is also unsurprising since both these actors have built their careers on being standouts. The feather-light story is about Doctor Dad (Kline) losing the muchloved family pooch and the fallout that follows. Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss is super cute as one of the two daughters, and the only annoying element is Ayelet Zurer, playing a hocus-pocus-y Gypsy. —Dan Heching

Time Investment: 104 min. Return on Investment: 45 min. asper Andreas has gone Hollywood. Not as in “the big time,” but as in his new self-produced/distributed film, Going Down in LA-LA Land (Embrem), is set in West Hollywood. Does this mean the Swedish-born gay-film scribe is abandoning the kind of New York-set, silly-sweet, cameo-studded gay dramedies he seems to churn out like Sean Cody porn? No, not quite. But funny you should bring up porn: LA-LA Land is actually an adaptation of Adam Zeffer’s true-life novel about an ambitious gay kid, Adam (Matthew Ludwinski), who moves from New York to Hollywood with dreams of making it big but instead falls into a world of gay porn and prostitution.

C

THE BOY ON THE CASTING COUCH Casper Andreas and Matthew Ludwinski in Going Down in La La Land

Don’t worry; it’s not as heavy as it sounds. Andreas is sure to keep it light, thanks to campy co-stars like Allison Lane as Adam’s I’ll-do-anything-for-fame roommate/fag hag and John Schile as his loveable porn-studio boss/hustler. Andreas even casts himself as one of Adam’s love interests, a meth-addicted porn director. It’s a strange mix of tones, especially once Adam falls for his new trick, closeted celebrity John (Michael Medico). Good thing Ludwinski is there to keep us enamored, all deep voice and teeth. He mostly pulls off the boyish charm without being too naïve. While it’s no Boogie Nights, LA-LA Land does manage to lay down the hard truth: cute gay “actors” are more likely to end up in porn than on the big screen. Because at the end of the day, we all have to pay the bills. —Benjamin Solomon

Jeremy Jordan and company in Newsies

photo: Deen van meer

Curtain Up Newsies By David Hurst ewsies, Disney’s new stage adaptation of their 1992 live-action movie musical, is an utter delight. It may not be great art, but it’s certainly great entertainment. Since opening last fall at the Paper Mill Playhouse, Newsies has won over skeptics with its grit, enthusiasm and cast of talented young performers giving their all to audiences. Now that it’s opened to raves on Broadway, it’s quickly becoming a phenomenon. Directed with ingenious style by Jeff Calhoun and boasting athletic choreography by Christopher Gattelli, Newsies’ stage incarnation owes most of its success to two ingredients: a streamlined book by Tony winner Harvey Fierstein, and a sensational performance by Broadway’s new heartthrob, Jeremy Jordan, as “newsie” ringleader Jack Kelly, who heads an insurrection against magnate Joseph Pulitzer when he raises the distribution price of newspapers. Fierstein’s book almost solves the problems of the film, which resulted in a critical and financial debacle for Disney. Starring a fresh-faced Christian Bale as Kelly and a crazed Robert Duvall as Pulitzer, director Kenny Ortega’s film version remains a jaw-dropping disaster despite a handful of tuneful songs by Alan Menken (music) and Jack Feldman (lyrics) that have been retained and supplemented in the stage adaptation. Joining popular songs “Seize the Day,”“King of New York” and “Santa Fe” are new songs “Watch What Happens,” for Kelly’s new love interest, Katherine (who just happens to be Pulitzer’s daughter), and “Something to Believe In.” Befitting an old-fashioned musical, which is what Newsies aspires to and achieves, the score is richly melodic and filled with rousing anthems that enrich the timeless story of the underdogs taking on the power brokers. The handsome Jordan is an undeniable star who holds the stage with charisma, intelligence and sex appeal. He’s a terrific actor who manages the difficult task of actually making the New Yawk dialect in Newsies sound authentic, and has a beautiful lyric tenor voice that makes Menken’s melodies soar. He’s not just another pretty face with a personal trainer—though he certainly has both those assets, too. Fortunately, Jordan is surrounded by

a strong supporting cast that includes the lovely and feisty Kara Lindsay as Katherine, Ben Fankhauser as Davey, Andrew Keenan-Bolger as Crutchie and seasoned pro John Dossett as Pulitzer. Additionally, as at Paper Mill, the male ensemble of dancers outdoes itself with Gattelli’s thrilling dancing, led once again by breathtaking dance captain Ryan Steele, whose split-leaps and dazzling extension are worth the price of admission all by themselves. N Newsies plays through August 19 at the Nederlander (208 W 41st St, www.NewsiesTheMusical.com).

CD Reviews Live at the Winter Garden Liza Minnelli In January 1974, 27-year old Liza Minnelli shattered box office records at the Winter Garden selling out 24 concerts in 36 hours for a show simply titled Liza. An album was released but it was pulled off the shelves due to contractual issues with the Cabaret soundtrack album that was then available. Finally available on CD and digitally, Liza sounds so fabulous you’ll want to cry. (Sony/Masterworks Broadway)

The CBS Television Specials Julie Andrews & Carol Burnett Just released from the vaults to the ecstatic delight of their fans, Julie & Carol: Live at Carnegie Hall (aired 6/11/1962) and Julie & Carol: Live at Lincoln Center (aired 7/1/1971) are now available on CD and digitally, the latter for the first time ever. Listening to them again is a revelation! Andrews & Burnett sound sensational and their repertoire in both concerts is first-rate. (Sony/ Matserworks Broadway)

Hits From His Broadway Hits David Merrick Broadway impresario David Merrick was the undisputed king of selfpromotion, and no example speaks to his shameless chutzpah like the 1964 album: David Merrick Presents Hits From His Broadway Hits. The suggestion of record producer George R. Marek, Hits…features Marek recording artists John Gary, a kitten-ish Ann-Margret and The Merrill Staton Voices. It’s a madcap affair that’s perfect background music for big-girl cocktails. (Sony/BMG Music)

The Long Road atrick Chin-Hong acquired a bicycle about four years ago. He wasn’t at all interested in cycling, but someone offered him a great deal on the bike and he just couldn’t pass it up. His initial plan was to sell the bike instead of having it claim valuable real estate in his apartment. But he never got around to it, and so it sat there for almost a year before he decided to take it out one sunny day for a ride. Surprisingly, he liked it. And day by day, he’d go out riding more and more. After a ride with his local bike club, a fellow cyclist suggested he try something called randonneuring, which is the sport of self-supported, long-distance endurance cycling. It has a fairly specific (and small) niche in the overall world of cycling. Randonneuring focuses less on the competitive aspect of racing, and more on the camaraderie of a club ride. Patrick went home and Googled “randonneuring” and saw that most rides are usually 200km. “What? Are these people crazy?” he wondered. He enjoyed the short trips he’d taken through the park, or up and down the city blocks, but 124 miles? He read the description: “friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.” Patrick was intrigued. In his first year of randonneuring, Patrick had gone on to do two full series of rides (or “brevet” as they’re called)— each series comprising a 200km, a 300km,

P

a 400km and a 600km brevet, and each with its own fixed time limit. That’s 3,000 kilometers, or 1,865 miles! The high point of his blossoming randonneuring career, though, was his qualification for, and participation in, the 1,200km Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP) event last August. Held once every four years, the PBP is the most prestigious event on the global randonneuring calendar, and is the oldest bicycling event still run on a regular basis on the open road. Randonneuring isn’t all cycling and scenery. It is a grueling—and dangerous—test of human endurance. As the distances are quite long, many riders try to push themselves to the limit, often to exhaustion. Some deprive themselves of sleep and continue riding into the night. At the end of some events, Patrick recalls a few riders coming in all bloodied up after having fallen asleep at the wheel, so to speak. “Yes, I’ve micro-napped while on my bike, too. It’s funny to hear about sometimes,” he says. But there can also be deadly consequences; last year an American rider died when he fell asleep and drifted into the path of an oncoming truck. In France, while the PBP is running, the local townspeople are very supportive and they line up along the entire route giving away free food, water and an occasional cup of beer or wine to the 5,000 happy cyclists from around the world. Patrick recalls one night around 4am, when

He says, “I jumped out of my skin and nearly fell off my bike!” The surprise woke him up and he pressed on. The enthusiasm of the fans fuels the riders almost as much as Gatorade and Powerbars. He’s traveled through India and Greece, and he’s planning to hit Canada and the United States later this year. “The best part about randonneuring is meeting incredible people from all over…each with the same wonderful spirit of camaraderie and excitement for a long day— or two—or four—on the open road.” N

By Peter Sherwood he Americano (518 W 27th St 212-525-0000, Hotel-Americano.com) ups the ante for tony hotel restaurants that merely settle for flash over fare with a wellexecuted menu quite worth the price. Foie gras with creamy sunchoke purée and huckleberry gastrique gets raves from me, and the buttery artisanal pasta is excellent. Splurge on a roasted Maine lobster and finish it all off with pistachio madeleines and a dollop of blood-orange sorbet. Marble Lane (355 W 16th St, 212-229-2336, MarbleLane.com) in the Dream downtown offers largely unmemorable cuisine that is not nearly as thought out as the carefully considered décor. What are worthwhile are the cubes of tuna ceviche, morsels of chicken cracklings, pomme frites in sizzling duck fat and the furls of buttery noodles that coddle the Bourguignon. Meatpacking embraced

Helmed by chef April Bloomfield, whose estimable credentials include The Spotted Pig in the West Village, The Breslin offers a meaty menu—dinner items like beef and stilton pie and petite poussins doused with vinegar, and a full English breakfast with bloody pork sausage and bacon. Straightup signature cocktails are at

the ready and some are even topped with ale and Guinness! What’s rumored to have once been the set of Sesame Street is now a charming dining space dubbed Hudson Hall (356 W 58th St, 212-5546500, HudsonHotel.com) in the fantastic Hudson Hotel. The revolving menu is presented cafeteria style with cunning plastic trays to be utilized as conveyances for self-service. Standard fare includes hummus and delicious sliders outfitted with pickles and white cheddar draped in Russian dressing. If fortune finds you, order mouth-foaming burrata cheese drizzled with olive oil and tickled with currants and herbs, or try a portion of sliced skirt steak with chimichurri sauce. The simply roasted chicken with thyme and lemongrass is also excellent. Here’s the hooch: look to a Classic Venetian Spritz with Aperol and rosy Champagne, a Stormy Firefly or a Bulleit bourbon-fueled American 75. Don’t miss the chocolate peanut butter

pudding served in a Mason jar. A trip to the magical garden at Imperial No. 9 (9 Crosby St, 212-389-0000, MondrianSoho.com) housed in Mondrian Soho is further enhanced by the food. Preface a fanciful feast of fish tacos with Berkshire pork belly surrounded by a garden of green lentils. It’s also easy to make a meal out of sides such as roasted cauliflower, blue corn grits with shrimp, and potatoes roasted with peanuts in duck fat tossed about with a confit of shallots. Tenpenny nails it at The Gotham Hotel (16 E 46th St, 212 490-8500, TheGotham HotelNY.com). Serious cocktails made with libations such as gin and rye hark back to the era of the suited-up threemartini-lunch. There’s food, too. Crisped artichokes mingle with smoked trout roe, ravioli are bursting with porchetta and ricotta cheese while risotto nestles with wild mushrooms. Rib eye steaks and vibrant fish such as salmon and cod hit it on the head. N

APRIL 20, 2012 47

Aries (MARCH 21–APRIL 20) All your pent up energy is useless unless you take action to put it to good use! Talking about better ideas or building a better body loses merit when there is no progress! The next step is yours to take.

Taurus (APRIL 21–MAY 21) Just because your stars give you expensive taste doesn’t mean you can’t be more frugal with your hard-earned income. Choose between what pleases momentarily and what goes long term.

Gemini (MAY 22–JUNE 21) Though your mind is a treasure trove of great ideas, if you never make the required effort to bring them to life you’ll be stuck in the same rut forever. It’s better to take chances than never to evolve.

Cancer (JUNE 22–JULY 23) If you keep letting situations hurt your feelings, know you’ve been warned. Proving to yourself that your feelings are valid secures the respect you’re entitled to. Ask a Leo to be your backup.

Leo (JULY 24–AUGUST 23) It’s easy to stay in a wrong relationship or career position with your possessive nature and desire to beat the system. Let go of things that are truly past their expiration date.

Virgo (AUGUST 24–SEPTEMBER 23)

NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

If you entrust delegated jobs to others, then let them do it. Micro-managing to maintain control will lose loyalty and respect from people you really need. Distract yourself with things that increase joy.

Libra (SEPTEMBER 24–OCTOBER 23) It’s easy to take advantage of vulnerable people or situations, but be cautious, it could come back to ruin you later. When you see a good opportunity think through the outcome before acting.

Scorpio (OCTOBER 24–NOVEMBER 22) Revenge is a favorite pastime, but fight the urge and rise above getting even with an old friend, ex or boss just because you’re bored. Put your time to better use and take day trips instead.

Sagittarius (NOVEMBER 23 –DECEMBER 22)

HOROSCOPE

Part of your charm is your egocentric attitude and carefree sexual nature. But don’t go overboard defining yourself by these traits. They could cost you a good friendship if you’re not careful.

Capricorn (DECEMBER 23 –JANUARY 20) Guiding star Saturn is cold, stern and sometimes mean. Stay mindful of this edge in yourself and strive to maintain an even temperament. Be remembered for your more endearing qualities instead.

Aquarius (JANUARY 21–FEBRUARY 19) A natural quirk of yours is to make life look easy to live, but underneath it all is a turbulent storm that can strike the poor unsuspecting victim at any time. Remember to go easy.

Pisces (FEBRUARY 20–MARCH 20) Getting out of bed in the morning is not a personal feat. Becoming emotionally attached to the hardships of everyday life can keep life blue. Accomplish real goals, then go back to sleep with a smile. © 2012 James Jacob Pierri. All rights reserved. For entertainment purposes only. DOUBLE TAKE REHYDRATE NOW

NO MAN LEFT BEHIND

THE SPLAT EFFECT SHOOTING BLANKS

BETTER OFF BLUE-BALLED

By Manuel Hung & Rod Steely

The Last Day (Lucas, 1-888-562-9125, LucasEntertainment.com) hat would you do if the end of the world was imminent? Party like it was 1999? Dance like it’s the last night of the world? Or maybe fuck 24/7 like it’s just any other day.

MANUEL: Michael Lucas has been teas-

ing us with the release of his latest bigbudget title for the past several months in a well-orchestrated roll-out and marketing campaign that gave me time to think about what I would name my own apocalyptic gay porno: I considered “End of Gays,” “Armageddon Laid,” and “His End Is Near,” but those honorable mentions lost to my final choice, “Fudgement Day.” ROD: The Last Day is an epic porn with great

production values (and huge cocks) worthy of the big screen. I don’t know which I found more gorgeous—the men or the locations. If I thought it was my last day, I’d probably try heroin and have as much sex as I could— or maybe just join Jonathan Agassi, Kriss Aston, and Will Helm fucking on a castle tower overlooking the Mediterranean. MANUEL: This story requires lots of suspension of disbelief—not just that all of Ibiza’s inhabitants have fled, believing a particle accelerator experiment gone bad has created black holes that are swallowing everything up, but also that boyfriends of 11 years Aston and Helm figure it’s the end of the world, so they might as well have their first three-way (with condoms). Still, the script is engaging and has some laugh-out-loud funny lines. ROD: My favorite subtitled dialogue was between Helm and Isaac Jones. Helm: “The world is not ending, but we have to go now!” Jones: “Do I have time to douche?” But no matter what evil plot mastermind Damien Crosse has hatched, there are happy endings for Ibiza’s eight remaining residents. Crosse knows how to spend the last day: deep-throating Rafael Car-

reras’ 10 inches. Even the end of the world couldn’t convince me to try that huge dick on for size. Then again, the promise of flipfucking Carreras’ perfect Cuban ass might make me lower my guard—and my shorts. MANUEL: I loved Carreras bottoming for Crosse, whose body looks fantastic, but Crosse hanging onto the metal bars of a window, feet perched on the sill, wideopen ass squatting back and bouncing on Carreras’ long dick, was one of the hottest fuck positions I’ve seen in a while. ROD: Isaac Jones knows if you’re going to be kidnapped, it should be by someone as hot as Adriano Carrasco. (Why do bad guys sound so much sexier with a Spanish accent?) Even tied up, Jones has a plan: get off and then get away. My problem is that if I got fucked by Carrasco, I’d stay fucked. He’s so hot, there’s no way I’d escape. MANUEL: Bravo to writer/co-director Marc MacNamara for being able to shoot this entire full-length movie, including numerous outdoor scenes, making Ibiza look completely deserted—and for not naming this movie “Fudgement Day”! IT’S THE END OF PORN AS WE KNOW IT Jonathan Agassi, Damien Crosse, Bruno Fernandez Gutierrez, Rafael Carreras, Will Helm & Issac Jones in The Last Day
